GTR - When The Heart Rules The Mind.

- Опубліковано 10 лют 2025
- GTR were a rock band founded in 1985 by former Yes and Asia guitarist Steve Howe and former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett.
In comparison to the two leaders' earlier work within progressive rock, GTR's work followed more of an Adult Oriented Rock format.
The band was short-lived, lasting for two years and one album. Hackett has subsequently been strongly critical of the project, though not necessarily of the other musicians involved in it.
This song is a rare gem. It never got the recognition it deserved. Bring back the 80s!!
Hi I Recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
You are absolutely correct. This song has/had relevance that I still can't wrap my head around.
Be well Ms. Forgione.
@@redskies4530 Hey I just listened to the Robert Nix song.I don't know why you are recommending that, I was expecting something that sounded like GTR, but that song is nothing like When the heart rules the mind.Thats Goth rock sounding kinda like Peter Murphy but he is 10 times better than this Robert Nix guy.I thought you were thinking about a great, forgotten hit from the 80s.All of us listeners were left disappointed.Thats not a good song.Sounds kinda dorky and stupid if you ask me.Nothing like GTR.

I was 14 when this song came out (1986) and haven't heard it since back then. It came on our radio today at work....I almost keeled over from shock/nostalgia, LOL. 😮🎶🎵
I'm 53 grew up in the 80s and I agree this is one of a great songs that was underrated
Hackett still does it on some of his tours. Sad about their bass player. He was one of the greats.
@@frankgarnevicus1187 54 here. You nailed it. This song hits hard.
53 here absolutely
I'm 55 and a great completely this is underrated. Loved it when it came out has a great sound to it.
So did you ever go backwards and buy the old albums by Yes and Genesis? Some great stuff in both catalogs.
In 1986 I was 17 yrs old & in 11th grade...I thought that this song was THE ABSOLUTE GREATEST SONG IN 1986!!!
The 80s...THE ABSOLUTE AWESOME DECADE OF MUSIC TO EVER COME AROUND IN MY OPINION!!!
So many GREAT MEMORIES!!!
Much love from Mobile Alabama.

Goosebumps. Real music, real musicians. Pure talent. I miss the 80's.
Amen and well said.
My first diehard favorite band was TOTO, then inmediately arrived ASIA .. I was too natural for me to like GTR so quicky... Just for Steve Howe
And i started to go back and then appreciated all the YES and GENESIS first period stuff with Howe and Hackett
My mind was so blowed away!!!
It is just timeless music
Absolutely
Hi I recommend a song called 'Looking Into The Mirror' By Robert Nix
I could not agree more, my friend!!
This is one of the hidden gems from the '80s, the greatest decade of music ever. What a glorious song! Follow your dream!
Life can be real cruel.
1 of the greatest super groups to exsist..a progressive superhouse!!!80s rocked
Agreed!
i think the 70s are on par with the 80s as far as music - but i do agree with your sentiment. music today SUCKS.
The lyrics are slim and trite. Musically, all of them could do better. That's why they tanked after one album.
Max bacon (The singer) is my grandad
Wow, seriously,cool.

I know him too. He's my cousin

+BigDaddy5155 HAS (present tense)...lol. I believe he's still alive! (I know Hackett and Howe are. In fact, I just talked to Hackett last week.)
The best rock song no one has ever heard of.
Yea, this and "Touch and Go" by Emerson Lake and Powell both songs came out in 86 and were the bands only hits. Except for Asia and Damn Yankees, the 80's super groups didn't have too much success. HSAS and The Firm didn't have a lot of success either.

1986 didn't seem to be a very good year for many elder statesmen of '60s/'70s rock 'n roll.
ONE of the greatest!...
Well I'm not one of those "no one"s - this song came out smack in the middle of my "wonder years" in Jr high school. If there's one good thing about "hashbrownCurrentYear" it's that we now have all of our life's back catalog at our fingertips. But aside from that I miss the days when, if you wanted "friends", you had to actually go out and have friends. Another song that is part of it that nobody's ever heard of is "Hanging on a Heart Attack" by Device.

Sorry about that Jim was it the summer of 86???
THANK YOU SO MUCH
I'm sorry for your loss.
What a sweet sentiment. So sorry for your loss James.
Sorry for your loss.
A massively underappreciated tune. Wow I am getting old.
Graduated from h.s. in 1985. Excellent memories from this song!
Ahhhhh.the 80s...when u bought the whole album just to hear the 1 or 2 songs that you like..haha..love it and miss those days

Or discovered great songs that never got any airplay .

Damn, 1986 was a great year to have been a member of Genesis. "Invisible Touch," "Sledgehammer," "All I Need Is a Miracle," "Take Me Home," and Mr. Hackett were all circulating the Top 40.
Invisible Touch?? Yuck.
What a year! There where more songs from the "Invisible Touch" circulating the Top 40, i believe that "Big Time" was also there, dominating the charts, that should be a record.
@@jonhohensee3258 Thank you. Absolute rubbish. Just like this puffery. Just look at Hacket's posh "medals" on his jacket. What a twat.

This is one of those songs that if you had never heard it before you would know it is from the 80s.
It screams 80's awesomeness!
Because it’s generic trash. Steve Howe should be embarrassed and he probably is.
Hidden gem of the 80's that probably not too many really remember.

Totally agree
63 now..absolutely love this song. Steve Howe is nothing short of amazing. Asia got me following him
I was fortunate enough to see GTR in 1986 at The Syria Mosque in Pittsburgh. I was 23. It was a great show and I still listen to them to this day. 2/8/2025
I can't understand how this song and this duo did not get more attention. To me, this song is in my top 10 hard rock songs all time.
Hard rock?????. This is pansy rock. HahahhahahahahahajajajjajhjaahahhahhahahhhahhHHahahahahah
ABSOLUTELY you got that right! GREAT TUNE !
Just one problem - very few people would classify this as hard rock. But a great song nonetheless.
It was a super group at the time of people from multiple bands
Actually this song and it's album featured prominently in the heavy metal charts when it was released. I can't recall anything controversial about their inclusion at the time!
This morning my wife started rattling off random lyrics trying to remember the song. A quick Google search and here we are. Thanks for sharing. The memories will last forever.
This music... those memories... God I wish I could go back.....
I'm 68. Have always loved this song from the first time I heard it. In addition to being a good rock song musically it actually has some pretty meaningful lyrics.
Yep ..I'm 69 too, good stuff
Had this album on cassette. Bought it for this and "The Hunter". Never understood why GTR was so criticized, the songs are great.
I still have the LP on vinyl
I don't remember anyone ever criticizing this band. Everyone loved their songs and musicianship.
They wouldn’t kiss

Same here. Wore it out. Amazing supergroup

Awesome song! 5 members of Genesis represented in the top 40 of June 7, 1986:
#37- Invisible Touch/ Genesis (Phil, Mike & Tony)
#35- This song (featuring Steve Hackett on guitar)
#32- Sledgehammer/ Peter Gabriel
#26- Take Me Home/ Phil Collins
#5- All I Need Is A Miracle/ Mike + the Mechanics
yes! those days... when Genesis were everywhere (but I did not know the deep connections :D )
Never knew that had occurred. I wonder if there are more associates to those bands as well. Like what yes had out and so on. Because there were definitely a ton of other musicians associated with many members from other bands that played with these musicians. But either way that’s a really cool thing they were all so talented!
Phil Collins and Steve Hackett were not original members of Genesis.
@@M.Robespierre3691 They both were in the last 5-man version though. Quite an astounding amount of talent in that band.
@@JoeVideoed Absolutely!
Wow. This song takes me back. It was summer of 1986. I just graduated from high school and enlisted in the ARMY. I was also madly in love with the one who got away. We all remember our first love. Man, to go back and relive those days. Its one thing to hear music from the 80s. Its something much different when you lived it. I'm so glad I was an 80s teen. "Follow your dream."
I think it's safe to say you weren't a popular guy.
@@edwardwright2989 why would you say something like that?
Me too 1986 I was 14 years old. Memories
A SUPER GROUP misunderstood in its time . . . NOW missed . . .
Just like Asia, Yes (90125) and King Crimson (discipline, beat, three of a perfect pair) Rush (grace under pressure, power windows, hold your fire, presto, roll the bones) among others...
How were they misunderstood?
@@carlosalomar7877 Man, you're really putting Yes, King Crimson and Rush in the same category as GTR?? lololol, c'mmon man, GTR is a cheesy 80s band with two UBER talented guitarists that had done way better work elsewhere.

Lirics (Howe&Hackett)
Mother protect me, protect me from myself
Lately I can't tell, who really are my friends
Burning the candle, the candle at both ends
Through crowds, across floors
Each night I just pretend
When the heart rules the mind
One look and love is blind
When you want the dream to last
Take a chance forget the past
Watching the actor, that takes the stage by storm
Stealing the limelight, while we're in the wings
Sometimes the hero, must play the underdog
But I don't feel the same
I must have everything
When the heart rules the mind
One look and love is blind
When you want the dream to last
Take a chance forget the past
Seasons will change
You must move on
Follow your dream....

Look how creative music was then.......I'm so glad I grew up in that era.....
Una auténtica joya de los 80. Es magistral, poderosa y con mucha energía. Una canción no tan reconocida como debería.
En Argentina fue muy escuchada pero merecia estar en el olimpo de la musica, una grande obra de arte
This song makes me feel sad, can't believe 32 years has gone by.
+Farhad Firouzi came out in 1986, so next year will be 30 years, even that is hard to believe

The most underrated song. The most underrated band of the 80's. This song was magic in my teens. I'm 50 now. Just as amazing. Just as magical. I'm also a pro singer and a tenor. This guy had one of the best voices in history. Bass player is exceptional too.
Awesome underrated song from the best decade of music...and the last decade of actual music.
I'll love any band with Steve Howe in the line up
YES was awesome!
@@StevenHavill No, Yes IS awesome!....
Yeah, until he breaks them up with his attitude.
Well considering he had Steve Hackett playing along side him couldn’t hurt.
'Boy .......And Howe!....
Boy I remember switching from VH-1 to MTV to see who was on those were great days.
Young memories gone by...
I'm an 80's kid through and through and without their 80's music I would have never been able to discover their respective awesome progressive work. So I'm grateful that the likes of Steve Howe, Steve Hackett, Phil Collins, John Wetton and Ian McDonald contributed to 80's arena rock. They have been an enrichment for the music scene regardless and even if songs like "When The Heart Rules The Mind" may sound awfully corny and sappy in the ears of some sophisticated prog listeners they have the right to exist. Thanks for posting! :)
this surely brings back memories for me !
Tatjana Lutz Indeed, and as far as prog pop goes this song is fairly complex. Then again, most sophisticated prog listeners only pretend to be THAT sophisticated. Every chef has a secret hankering for mac 'n cheese!
+philosopher2king LOL, I love your analogy, too funny.
Funny how I still remember the lyrics to this day. Great song. Really liked this album a lot. What a line up too. Great sound. Pure 80's and it's great.
I knew not until recently, that Steve Howe was a member of this band. I only knew it was a high-flying song I can almost never get tired of. One of THE most incredible guitarists of the modern world, and I don't know how The Lord sees him, but I want to recommend him as a hero in spirit. This is one of those songs that SAYS SOMETHING, and I wish that was as important, these days, as it used to be.
Steve will be in Heaven, no doubt in my mind. The man has always had a gentle, expressive, and joyful soul, and is 100% dedicated to his Guitar calling. He’s a disciplined, loyal, amazingly fluid, and versatile player. I’m a lifelong Drummer, though I started on guitar, and it always has driven my bandmates crazy over the decades how much I talk about Howe’s greatness (Bill Bruford is my #1 drumming influence, along with Alan White, Carl Palmer, Tony Thompson, Neil Peart, and many others…Howe, Ty Tabor, Alex Lifeson, Elliot Easton, Robert Fripp for Guitar). Cheers!
Memories of driving my 73 Monte Carlo doing 70 mph with this song cranked in 1985 😃
Saludos a todos dios los bendiga y doy gracias a dios por en los 80s vivir mi juventud disfrutando toda la buena música
When the GTR album first came out, many longtime Howe/Hackett fans dismissed it for being "too commercial" and "not progressive enough." But, damn, quality arena rock has never sounded better!
I was in high school when this came out also :) I woke up today with it going through my head for some reason. I must have been dreaming about school because I had totally forgot about this tune. I made my coffee and had to get on youtube to find it. We had awesome times in the 80's for sure!
Yes we did!!!
Genesis and Yes guitars, together, awesome
Holy crap..totally forgot how much i liked this song!
This song is exactly why I love 80s rock. The lead vocalist has an amazing voice and harmo is and guitar work is out of hand.
I've been on stage with the lead singer (Max Bacon) a few times. After GTR he owned a pub at the end of my road and Sunday night was karaoke, he'd always do backup vocals, I know 2 of his kids aswell, Alex was in year above me at school and Samantha was in same year as me. Years later Alex was my boss at work for a brief time and Samantha was once working in a pub, I didn't recognise her til she was serving me and said "Hello Michael!"
@@mikedickens7957 thanks, I was wondering who the singer was.

Rest in peace Phil Spalding. Brilliant bass player. I was lucky enough to see him play live in the early 80s.
Such a great song. I remember the first time I heard this on MTV. Loved it then, still love it now. I miss the 80s!
Steve Hackett + Steve Howe = a match made in heaven.
Proud to own this album.
I wish I did back in 1986, now it kinda hard to find.
I love how they kinda do arena rock with a seasoning of prog. The classical breakdown at 3:22 is so distinctive. GTR should have done as well as Asia.
It probably seems a bit anal to talk about "a few years" especially those of us who were teens then and hitting 50 these days, however, GTR was surfing into the last few waves of 80s prog rock where as Asia was square in the middle of the best years for that style of music. I liked this song quite a lot - I would really crank it up in my car, but I also felt the cringe hearing the song because I understood it was already out of date by 1986. Again, it is an awesome song, but I wish it had been a song in 1982....it would have been big.
You nailed it Dave. For weeks, the memories of this song were bouncing around my brain. I could have sworn it was Asia who performed this song and could not find it on any Asia album. It wasn’t till my brain remembered enough of the lyrics that I found this UA-cam post. Agreed, these guys definitely just as good as Asia.
I agree with both David and Warren. Great song and album... Just a couple years late to the party's. Had this on tape and can remember blasting it and thinking it was underrated. Just a litt late.
I love even more the silent re-setin at 3:36
