  • We visited custom car designer and hot rodding legend Boyd Coddington in 1995 before his hit reality TV show "American Hot Rod" became a household name. We caught a glimpse of a '33 Ford roadster being built for Michael Anothony of Van Halen. Boyd also showed us the DuPont Smoothster which won the Oakland Roadster Show.
    RIP Boyd Coddington 1944-2008

This was my hot rod hero when I was a kid. My parents went to the NSRA nats in Louisville and met him at his booth. My dad bought me a shirt and had him sign it for me. He said that even tho Boyd was busy and completely swamped, he still took the time to make a kid happy by signing a shirt for me and that he was one of the most humble and kind “superstars” of the hot rod community. I miss him.

As a young adult I stayed with my brother out in California for a few months back in 2000 and we went to a couple of car show during that time & one we were going to, I was in a pissy mood about going to a show that was all convertibles and I thought it was going to be stupid. From somewhere about 1988-90 on, I'm thinking. BTW, Chip learned his craft and trade working for Sam Foose- his dad was "in the mix" with Cushenberry, the Barris Bros., and so many more. I hope I live long enough to see what Chip's son turns out to be- I expect awesome. Boyd had some deeper problems- dig around, there are some interviews with his ex, Diane, and the bizz about his bankruptcy. He also went out of his way to damage others careers when they didn't swing his way. Boyd had a great drive to bring his vision to the game. FR

One day Boyd ran the dream job and next week his scheduling says you can't attend your sister's wedding. There are ways to achieve "uncompromising" than running over your employees. Others, notably Chip Foose, tend to bring on more talent rather than overwork the house talent. At one point Boyd hired a guy from Idaho who had a near mystical ablity to paint cars. Look into how that ended up. I'm not going to do the homework for you.

Jesse James worked for Boyd before launching West Coast Choppers. He worked for Boyd Coddington in the late-80s, where he further refined his welding and fabrication skills. It's during this time, he says in an interview, that he started to make his own fenders after work. He tells about how he made $700 in salary per week from working at Boyd's shop compared to making $15,000 a week, “Welding in my garage at night.” This was the last job he had before fully diving into just custom motorcycle work.

It is decent of you to try and provide some additional perspective of Coddington. I will credit him for managing to pull together a group of talented people (which allowed him to take credit for all of their ideas and work). Look at the names on the drawings. Look at the design and style. That design eye belongs to Chip Foose, not Coddington. The modeling and process was taught and learned in automotive engineering school. Some people have actual artistic talent and spacial visualization skills. I saw him as a terrible leader because of how he treated people and went about 'running' his business. American Hot Rod only made him more outrageous. Of all the custom car people he was the opposite personality of the group who were all talented and nice guys. I did watch his tv show a few times but could not deal with his attitude and treatment of others. I do not miss him, at all.
