Love the intro!!!!! I've got the FT-710 and the FTdx-10.... I actually like the Ft-710 a little better. I use the dx-10 in the shack and have the Ft-710 in a Apache case for POTA. And the Ft-891 is in a Apache case along with a MFJ-939Y tuner and a 20ah Bioenno battery..... You're going to enjoy the new toys !! 73's Frank
Thanks, Frank! I've heard that about the 710 vs the FT-DX10. Some say the DSP in the 10 is better, but I've not used one. It does seem like the receiver in the 710 is better than the 7300, but I haven't really used it enough to tell. I have found where it seems like the receiver is way more sensitive than the S meter because I've heard signals perfectly without the meter moving. That could just be a weird thing with the bands, too, I suppose. I need to get a 12ah Bioenno for the 891 and start getting it ready for hike in activations for this fall. That will be fun. I’ve also got a 710 & its mike in an Apache case. The brackets, especially in green, look like a great addition. Going to do some exact measurements in the morning to see whether it would still all fit inside the case.
i had the portable zero rails. great rails, really sturdy and affordable, but i later got the armoloq cage for the 710. I keep my 710 in a backpack for field deployment, and the portable zero rails didn't protect the rear cabling enough for when the radio is in the backpack. imagine having the backpack on your knee, the rails don't stop your knee from pressing on the cords or fan between the rails, or protect the front if something is on top of the radio while in the bag. The cage is more expensive but offers much better protection IMO. The rails are better than nothing though and i would recommend them if you aren't keen on another $200 after you just bought the radio. But if your main concern is a grabbing handle, the rail is better.
I'm going to have to check out that cage. I hadn't come across one like that yet. Honestly, though, that was pretty much my main need was a good way to grab onto the radio, so as you said, the rails are perfect for that. I don't plan on having mine in a backpack, and I don't ever leave anything connected to the back of the radio.
@KC0JH_HAMateur_Radio i found them at hamvention in dayton and was very impressed. my goal was a pota kit with everything I need to deploy and run it. I was considering a pelican case, shack-in-a-box, or something similar. But for mobility's sake, a backpack seemed easier than a hard case unless I spent a lot of money on a larger case with wheels. With the bag, it's throw it over a shoulder and go and I have everything I need. Everyone will have their own setup for their own needs. A mobile radio may be better for pota being much smaller and lighter. But I wanted the waterfall which is why I went with the 710, the bag, and the cage.
@jonw695 I've looked at the shack-in-a-boxes too, for my 7300. They are definitely nice, but just seemed too much for what I wanted, both in cost and size. I want to start doing some hike in activations but I'm likely going to use my 891 in a backpack. I don't ever leave anything hooked up to the radio when I'm transporting it, so the rails on the 710 and 7300 are about all I need for my use case. I cage or something similar would be nice for the 891 though. 🤔

Nice video. I never thought about the humidity issue. I noticed several options for packets that absorb humidity of Amazon. Gave me something to think about. 73 Bill KG4FXG
That's actually not a bad idea. It might be worth testing just to see what happens. Going from the house to the outdoors and opening the case, it's pretty instantaneous with the moisture, though, so I'm not sure how fast those packets could mitigate it. It's like pulling your car out of an air-conditioned garage on a high humidity day and your windows instantly fog. (Another problem needing a solution.) Thanks, Bill! 73!
