My favorite HT I carry happens to be the cheapest radio I own. Tidradio H3. Super easy to program with my phone, excellent battery life and very small and lightweight. I hardly use my expensive icon and Yaesu radios anymore as I just don’t use all the fancy features like APRS and digital modes anymore. I like the simplicity of the H3 and the fact that I can quickly program with cell phone.
Great video, and great to see what everyone is carrying. One unintended benefit of this is to see how many people have a signal stick antenna! Also important to know.
For the money that’s just a hard antenna to beat.
Fun video! I don't typically carry a HT but being a vintage radio enthusiast I've been working on getting an old Kenwood TM-215a I recently acquired fixed up. Not only will I rock the vintage ham radio aesthetic, I'll be able to use it for self defense due to its size and weight.
How does that compare to the yaesu ft-470? I got it thrown in on a deal a while back😄
I’m an HT addict. But the one I end up grabbing most of the time is my VX6. I’ve had it for years and it’s very sturdy and just does what I need without all the shiny features.
Well, I am in the wrong club. You all have very expensive radios. I cannot compete.
They are utubers, so of course they are going to be sporting high end HTs.
I only have a Icom IC- T7H. Works for me for how little I use it and the lack of anybody on the radio.
@ke7uia, it is not a competition, please do not feel at all discouraged. When the radio you now have will do what you need, you are golden. However, when you think you need more whistles and bells in a radio it could cost more money. In this video notice there is not a best radio. Each person interviewed have their own reason for their radio which for them fits their needs thus for them the best at the time. My HT is the Tidradio TD-H3, have two total cost $50-ish, one is always on GMRS, the other always on Ham, plus an inexpensive QRZ-1 Explorer from GigaParts for $22.00-ish. My needs do not require more than those.
Interesting the price points on all of the radios. With the exception of TO's Radioddity, those were some high ticket rigs.
Great video Jason. I still use my Kenwood TH-D72.. mainly for the APRS functionality. I sold my FT5DR. As much as I wanted to like it.
Still love my Yaesu FT-530 true dual bander with display microphone from the 90's!
But just got an Icom ID-52A to try out.
Really good video showing what the other Ham Tubers are using!
It would be really cool if you had all the radios mentioned listed in the description also. Never heard of any of these radios before.
This was a great idea conceptually AND it was great to get exposure to some UA-cam hams that I haven't sub'd to yet.
+1 for signal stick!
Signal stick is a way of life
@@stevet7522 I got the glow in the dark and it's amusing. I need a few more!
Signal stick for life !
Great video. All options were great radios. At my campsite, i had the ID-52, VX6, FT3D and FT5D. I have a bag of radios that I carry with me to most places.
Thanks!
This was good, Jason! Good stuff!
I've been carrying a Kenwood TH-F6A for the last couple of years. I like that it is small, covers three bands, and has WX radio built-in. It also charges off 12vdc and battery life is good.
It's pretty easy to make it digital with a Mobilinkd TNC. Of course, I'd want a second unit for that.
73!
This might be my favorite Ham video ever because I love all the yahoos who weigh in with their input. All my heroes! It was a lineup of all the dudes that helped me build antennas, get on the air, learn about ham, etc. Regarding the actual topic of HTs, I can't justify hundreds of $$$ for a hip brick. So many videos on the "best" HT and so little use of them. (Please let me know if I just invented a new term #hipbrick). But, this is the great thing about amateur radio, you can go so many directions! However, sadly, my attempts to communicate with my club via HT bands (basically 2M) meets regular failure because they are on discord talking about their $500 HTs instead of using them.
This is one of my favorite videos! Very interesting and informative, and I would love to see similar ones done on other equipment, like HF, antennas, etc.
IF I had the budget for it, I'd be EDC'ing an APRS HT. HT's I've got on hand is are the Baofeng UV-5r, (3) Kenwood TK-2180's, an Anytone UV-868(DMR APRS only, which I found out after purchase), and most recently a Quansheng UV-K5(running EzGuzer firmware). The Anytone UV-878 or newer, with analog APRS is on my wishlist, although builting my portable HF station was my radio project for the year, and I went way over budget on that. .
Excellent video. Especially considering I am always wondering what's sponsored and what's not.
Super great video, very fun to see what everyone likes and carries - you see so many reviews online you never know what to trust, so it's fun to see not just what folks are reviewing, but what they actually use every day. Agree with other commenters - the biggest fun thing I learned from this was how much everyone loves signal sticks! 73.
Loved seeing what everybody was carrying. Glad to see that my Anytone AT D-878UV and Yaesu FT5DR were on the list. I love both radios and use both. The 878 has Fantastic range with 7 watts, but unlike Ham Radio 2.0, I say that there realistically is no programming this DMR radio on the fly. Most of the time when I am going out I reach for the FT5DR just because of all the features and the ease of use. Only downside for me with the FT5DR is the short battery life. I think I just fixed that issue by buying W0AEZs 5AH battery. I haven't tried it yet, but looking forward to trying it out in the next few days.
After watching Gaston’s videos on the VX-6 I may have to get me one. Wish I could find the old VX-8 but hard to find them.
The VX6 is a great little radio
Sold my VX-8, and miss it so much! The only radio I regret selling 😢
Im obviously the least of these but, I still favor the RadioShack HTX-202. NO SOFTWARE, only thirteen memories, standard analog, compatible aftermarket accessories. Quick to program. Easy to maintain. Charge batteries separate from radio, plug radio into aux power w/o battery. Access external antennas w/bnc. Sometimes, you have to swap out the memory battery, so far I haven't got one. Same for the HTX-404. You could always go cheap. You could always spend a lot.
Interesting subject! Surprised to see the Anytone in there.
I have an FT60 & UV5R..more often than not I grab the 5R...stupid little thing just works and is tiny..
Thanks for the honesty. Waiting for the attacks on beginner poors like me use a Beofeng.
Great video. My primary daily carry is a Yaesu FT3DR and my secondary is a FT70.
I have the FT70 but don't carry it often. The FT3 is a great radio. Carried one for a while before picking up the FT5
Maybe you want to clarify that you are indeed carrying the FT-70D and not the FT-70G? One letter makes a huge difference!
@@nine7295 FT-70D...
Just got the ft-70d because my local repeater went to fusion. Not impressed. Worst battery life ever, had to buy speed charger separately, doesn't work as well as my anytone 878 on 2m ...
When our club is supporting a race (5K, 10K, Marathons , Tri) I use my 878 primarily because of the Turbo power mode. The battery easily supports a 4-6 hour event. I own the FT3/FT5 but I purchased the high-capacity battery sold by W0AEZ and its USB-C rechargeable. 73, W1RKB
Very useful video - thanks! The VX-6R is my daily carry, especially for the 220 band, and although only 1.5w on 220, it's good enough. Speaking of vintage, also have the older FT1-XDR for APRS/Fusion that still rocks, and like the VX-6 is wideband receive - cheers y'all!
Great concept for a video. Next year do one about what antenna they use on their HTs. Seems like a lot of whip around thin antennas.
Anytone 878 all day long, it makes everything i need, Analog FM, DMR, APRS with good quality all arround.
Not sure why but I really liked this video. Format was great too.
878 and FT-3 are my go to’s
Just proves that one radio doesn't fit all. Thanks for sharing!
Yes it does!
I carry a Collins KWM-2. On the Internet, at least.
I have never heard anyone ever complain about the battery life on an 878 before.
The Kenwood D75 appears to be popular, but still has the battery
problem like the D74 before it,
which I experienced years ago,
until I sold it. 😅
Hi, how long did the battery last?
@COAPServiciosJuridicos-vy6im Sorry, I don't have it any longer and can't remember,
except it was short like others have said.
Congratulations Jason and Frank. For you others.
Everything you said was good about your choice so is the Anytone 878.
Everything you said was bad about your choice the Anytone 878 is good.
The Anytone 878 has exceptional audio in and out only comparable to the Icom.
The Anytone IS easy to program. What other radio starts with menu/settings/chan set/new chan/chan type/tones/RX Freq/TX Freq and then save. Done. It's linear...
Anytone 878 APRS, runs in the BG. Does not take up a band section.
Anytone 878, digital two way voice on 145.500
Anytone 878, Radio to Radio SMS right from the keypad in simplex.
And the battery. I drive a lot. In and out of my truck from stop to stop. I turn on the radio when I'm driving and turn it off when I'm not in the truck. I run APRS at an interval of 300 s. I monitor two GMRS frequencies with calling CQ while on the HWY. My battery last all week. Even when I often forget o turn it off over night. Sometimes twice in a week.
My cons on the AT 878. It's not IP67 but it is IP54 so as Randy says you cannot play with it in the bathtub but you can be in the splash zone and that's good enough for most of us
Alright, beat me up on how wrong I am!
BTW I do own an FT5, FT70, VX6, Icom-52A (love that radio), TID
s of all variants, Fengs, Talkpods (excellent audio) and many Wouxun,s.
BTW Richard "Mr. Bateman" they all have the Signal Stuff Signal Sticks on them!
Another great video! Strange how you couldn’t hit the digipeater on the mountain but we could down below.
It's just the location of the digi and the campground. Weird but I have confirmed it two years in a row now.
Thank you for showing what I have been trying to tell a few folks. Though the cheap Chinese radios are popular amongst many, many more experienced and knowledgeable amateurs are not using them. We are using the better quality radios even if they are several years old.
My go to HT is either the VX-7r, the IC-T90a, or the D7A. These are all pretty old HT's, but all very solid, and trustworthy. One has even found its way to the bottom of the hottub once!
The budget for a guy doing YT (and occasionally getting comped radios for eval) is perhaps different from that of a new ham starting out (and not yet skilled in APRS or digital modes). Let's see... Kenwood THD75A tri-band for $750 or Baofeng K5PLUS tri-band for $30... without much experience, which would I buy?
I have that Baofeng (and some of its kin) and like it, but my faves are an old Icom V80 (with Li battery) and a W32A. The V80 is a rugged 2m beast. The W32A has a metal case, can be a cross-band repeater, and has built in help for the menu. Good grief. Nice feature in pre-internet days. I'd like to see that on newer radios.
I have a Yaesu FT-70DR. Nice radio, but lousy 2-handed volume control mechanism... and bad battery life exacerbated by using a soft-switch instead of a mechanical switch for power. It will drain itself in days just waiting for you to power it on.
@@rickgilbrt I think you missed the take away from the video.
Most guys are not using the latest and greatest is what is being said. Most are using the older radios.
I have a rack of radio's I use now or keep around for adventures and guests. I have given away 2 warehouse's of radios in the last 30 yrs. ( I am a former communications company owner). Your comment is not falling on deaf ears, however I think you are missing what was said. These guys understand that they are in a position to use the latest and greatest, however, given that option, they are still choosing to use some of the older gear.
Sometimes for the same reasons as the typical rest of us, COST. It doesn't make sense to spend a crazy amount on the newest D75A, or ID-52a, etc. Those become more status symbols then smart purchases!
I too have a W-32a, great radio, so is the FT-470, which I have 2 of, but well antiquated by now, and the battery life sucks! I too have a few of the cheap Chinese radios as well. They make great wheel chocks, and doors stops when all else fails.
@@ChrisRobinsonKF6NFW Actually, the K5PLUS is a decent radio (if it isn't a bad build with excessive intermod). It's a very affordable tri-band with a large display and a large stock battery that is USB-C compatible. Seeing hams carry old radios that did cost a lot when new doesn't help the new Tech for whom the difference between Baofeng and Kenwood is a car payment. I didn't pay anywhere near list for my old Icons that I bought at a club auction,l. What advice do you give a new ham with limited means about what HT he/she should look for to participate in club activities. I moved to Anacortes, WA, in early 2023, and it's the first place I've been where 1.25m is a significant band. It's Baofeng or $400 or more to get 2m, 1.25m, and 70cm.
Newer ham here. The anytone 878 is the most features for the least cash. DMR, gps, APRS all the things. I love mine. Not as impressed with the ft-70d. Horrible battery life.
I alternate between an ICOM H-16 and a V-80. I don’t need all the extra features of the newer HTs. Also have the Radioddity GA-510 if I need UHF capabilities. Really depends on where I’m going and what I plan on doing.
What 220 HT did the other UA-camr hams use? Just a couple of you had tribanders in this video like Yaesu VX-6 or Kendow 74/75. Wondering what other hams did for 220 who carried a dual band HT.
There are the Alinco DJ-G29T, Standard C228A, and a few more models that are 220 with one other band. I have 2 Alinco DJ-280T but they are mono band only. I also have the Kenwood TH-D74A and a few Baofeng models that are 220 capable, in addition to 144 and 440. The Quansheng UV-K5 series can also do 220 at about 200mW, but I don't know how clean it is. I also have 2 Yaesu VX-7R that can do 220 at about 250mW. Normally I either use the Baofeng or the Alinco for 220 if I need to use an HT for it.
I carry a uvk5 I do not do digital or aprs I crossband and I find this radio to be excellent for what I do at a great price.
My daily driver is either the FT-65 or ID-50A depending on the situation. (Though usually it's the ID-50A) Pretty much for the same reason that K8MRD mentioned. Excellent battery life and great menu system
There was a ID50 dropped from 14000 feet (not a typo) and survived while we were at Huntsville. Carlos from @LifeAtTerminalVelocity lost his radio bag during a jump. Radio was in a bag but I'm still surprised it survived the drop. His phone wasn't so lucky
@@KM4ACK when you mentioned it being dropped from that height I assumed you meant life at terminal velocity, before even reading that part
Although I can well afford any of those more expensive radios mentioned in the video, at present I do not need all those features. My EDC are two TD H3, one is always on GMRS, the other is always on Ham. For both a total of $50-ish they are very good radios. They can be booted to GMRS, Ham, and Normal mode, sadly they do not have any IP rating. My other radio is the inexpensive GRZ-1 Explorer, a dual band from GigaParts, it is surprising how good it sounds, cost $22-ish. The GRZ-1 seems to be 99% of the TYT TH-UV88, with slight firmware changes. Some folks may say "Oh no, those are not real radios you need to spend more." Well, I can call folks, they can call me, I can connect to repeaters, and the like, folks on the other end say I my radios sound very good, thus these radios seems real to me.
SUPER timing !!!
THANK YOU!!!
I am utterly disappointed. There is only one answer to this question: *a Baofeng UV5R with roger beep enabled.*
😂
Very cool video. I think I need the d75 now though 🙃. My ft3dr needs a break from its aprs/winlink daily grind
Quick question, and it might make zero sense, I’m super new. In Josh’s use case (traveling by car) wouldn’t repeaters be constantly in and out of range, assuming you’re driving 60mph down the road?
KI6NAZ doesn’t have much faith in his F-150 Lightning, taking a rental to Huntsville Hamfest. Tisk, tisk. 😂
Retevis RA79 and a uv-k5 (99)with the F4HWN 3.3 firmware and a few Retevis RT85’s is about all I can afford for HT 😔
Why no Baofeng review for us folks who can't afford your $$$$ radios?
I wonder why no one picked rfinder 😬
Nice Video enjoyed
Any chance we can get that list in the card with links?
You might have to either watch the video again or go to the transcription. Of course, neither of those gives links.
Great video idea.. I really enjoyed that !
Awesome, thank you!
What HT do I carry? The answer is--yes!
TO does that ga-5wb app use off shore servers and are they CCP?😮 This is a showstopper for me.
I have an N76 in my AliX cart but I won't press the button without the right launch codes from you.👨🏽✈️
A fairly common theme seems to be the spaghetti style looooooong antennas
Signal stick.
Pretty much all of us rock the signal sticks
I think this video is paid for my the Signal Stick lol
ID-52 all day, every day.
If only it had real APRS, I'd have to have one
FT5DR and UV5R
What antenna was Gaston using on that VX-6R?
Not sure of specifics but it was a stubby he picked up at the show
Vx-6 ayyy
Nice to get an array of opinions from professional amateurs.
Is this the state of operators LOL
No, just UA-camrs
Any recommended radios for those of us whose name isn't Elon Musk? D74/D75? Give me a break.
Wouxun, Tidradio
If VGC and Baofeng ever team up, you won't be able to give those overpriced radios away.
Baofeng UV-5R is THE BEST!
With you on this but we need to know the false Prohet. I have my suspicion but would like yours.
SEIZURE WARNING at 5:39 ....no advance warning during the video. please pin.
Nice to see the incels come out of their moms basement to play outside! Try to get some girlfriends and put the little radios down
Wish they'd use deodorant tho. Last Ham fest I went to, it smelled worse than a grateful dead show ..
APRS is useless. I have it on my FT-5DR. NEVER use it. Ever.
hand helds are a waste of time and money
Great video. Thank you for sharing and posting. KN6PWH..73
Thanks for watching!
