  • The Lime Mixing Machine is in operation during the Autumn Rally at Twyford Waterworks. Hydraulic engines, like the two you see at Twyford, were once common in cities and ports with hydraulic power stations. Tower Bridge in London was powered by such engines. Our two are now rare survivors. The engines are powered by water bled from that flowing up to the service reservoir. The pressure is about 5 bar (0.5 MPa). The engine has three cylinders set at 120° to each other so that it will start and run in any position. The cylinders are single-acting, with water pushing the ram up, while on the downstroke the water drains out of the cylinder.
