@@SHAITfam yes, it is. There's a perfectly good reason many Cooler Master logos went without the text, and just left the hexagon outline as their logo. i will never understand the bitching done by people regarding a cooler's installation process. you install it once when you first get it and maybe when you upgrade in the future. whats the deal with spending an extra 2-3 minutes on it? i cant believe some people consider that to be a deal breaker
not everyone only installs coolers on personal builds, some are used for building in maybe like a small shop or for situations where you need to do a lot of testing like tech content creators
Its a deal breaker for many because: 1.) Someone who swaps out build often like doing motherboard testing or somewhat similar stuff, how easy it is to install the cooler really matters in those situations. 2.) Its a huge thing for beginners. They don't want any complicated steps of installation like swapping brackets and then separating the non-labelled screws from a bag full of them and again choosing which support bracket is for their socket from a huge collection of Intel and AMD specific support brackets provided. That is why, they tend to lean towards coolers that are easy to install as they will be doing it for the first time.
@Matt Zilog And yes, it's a deal breaker for many if there's a similar priced cooler into their consideration list. Otherwise if it's a good cooler, comes with a good price then most of the people don't care and simply buy it. But it's the moral responsibility of companies to make the product installation easy because it's one of those first impression things that denote about the product quality and brand reputation.
Good to see some love for air coolers, I'm still using my 212 evo I bought like 8 years ago. Little bit of cleaning and a new fan when I change rigs, should last forever.
I bought my first 212 Evo and I'm extremely happy with it keeps my CPU(ryzen2700 oc to 4.2ghz all cores) at 70c underload and for 30$ great value I got tired of AIO's so wanted to do an air-cooled PC for once
Interesting, my 2700x with the prism cooler peaks at like 82c when both my 1070ti and CPU are under load... And I'm only using precision boost with relaxed EDC.
Man you saved my day, i just bought a R7 2700 and im about to swap the box cooler for aftermarket on....and i was curious about of how the 212 black performs on this chip
I have the hyper 212 black and it’s easily the best air cooler for the price. My build has a few rgb parts but this cooler is not one of them and it looks gorgeous. It has a stealthy all black look, it’s extremely silent under load, and keeps the chip cool. Can’t beat it. Nice video
my wraith stealth is around 10-15C higher than cm 212 led (1 fan) when playing games like bfv, in prime95 small i did hit 95C after just 30 seconds and it thermal throttled my 3600 with stealth but with 212 hyper led it kept it below 90C for long period. my ambient is pretty hot though so keep that in mind and both done in open and closed case, no difference. i would say the performance of cm 212 is about similar to wraith prism (stock for higher end ryzen). i have no idea if the black edition is much better though.
Nice balanced review, Greg, I appreciate your honesty. I'm still rocking the 212 Evo in my media server, keeping my FX 8350 nice and cool. It's been running almost 24/7 for close to seven years and the 212 hasn't missed a beat.
I was just going to search for a Slim vs 212 video. Looked over to the right and Bam, there it was lol. Greg, you may be psychic lol. and hello from Oct 2020. =P
This would be super useful for me, I have the wraith prism on a 2700x in the h500 case and would be curious if they are around the same performance or better than the stock ones.
If you have the stealth just ditch it for a 212 my stealth got considerably hotter and way too loud imo. Switched it with the 212 black edition and dropped the Temps quite a bit and sustained those Temps and quietness during heavy gaming loads.
there is a difference when it comes to overclocking but if you arent going to overclock, it is more than enough. The spire is better then the stealth whilst the 212 EVO is better then either of them(if you are buying the 3600 get the 212 but if you get the X variant you dont need it) i recommend the non X variant though becouse the 212 is around 40 bucks and that is the price difference between the 3600x and 3600
I downloaded an SCD Key after hearing about them from your last video! Key was almost comically cheap, but it's working just fine so far. It was like $10US to get rid of that watermark, and I personally find it SO SO worth it!
Hilariously, if you bought the Hyper 212 AND a Silent Wings 3 fan, you'd still be cheaper than the dark rock slim... So if noise was an issue, this would be the best of both worlds. It'd be interesting to see how well the hyper 212 works with a push pull with the silent wings 3 installed as well. Not the point of the video, but still something to consider.
@Cerus98 Wrong. 100% absolutely wrong. Spreading ALWAYS gives lower temps than just putting a dab in the middle and buttoning it up. God damn, people are stupid lol.
im right there with ya. i got noctua's budget line fans which is basically their quality fans without the pads (the grey ones, they are only $14!). moved the original cooler master fan to the front and put the 1700 rpm noctua fan in its place and boy, i can barely hear my pc anymore. the noctua doesnt really go above 900 rpm like ever (And i have an fx 8320 processor) and my cpu has been pretty much staying no hotter than 48 C like ever, sometimes my processor just hangs at room temperature or lower is the AC is on. tbh the best purchase ive ever made for this older PC by far
Honestly, the Cryorig M9 has been a favorite budget cooler for me for a while. It's usually $20, 92mm, all nickel plated copper heatpipes, baseplate, and a black top cover (it's probably the best looking cooler at the price point, although as always that's only my personal opinion). It's surprisingly quiet, and usually tests to match the 212 evo when it comes to cooling (quite surprising given the size). That said, the 212 is still a solid option after all this time, and the black edition looks much nicer than the evo did lol.
One key factor for the Dark Rock Slim that was surprisingly overlooked was the overall size of the installation. If your motherboard has the RAM pretty close to CPU, it's difficult to install the Hyper 212 line without removing some sticks when putting on (or taking off) the fan due to the width of the heatsink fins. I've experienced this first hand on my build on a MSI X470 Gaming Plus mobo; pushes one of the RAM modules just a bit towards its neighbor. I'll be giving this one a try just because of that.
Good video with useful info. Hope you do more of these as you really do a good job of explaining things and focusing on the stuff that matters to us builders.
Great video! You should do Hyper 212 Black vs Corsair H60. I know it's apples and oranges, but there seems to be a lot of push online (forums, reviews, ect) to promote cheaper air coolers over smaller formfactor AIOs. Just wondering if all those statements are correct. Keep up the good work. Cheers!
In my experience AIO are great until they heat soak then you see they're true nature I say if your going AIO and if it possible go with the ones with bigger radiator Main reason I dropped my H60 for the world of air coolers
@@MRD0889 Interesting. So if I understood you correctly, AIO have more specific cutoff for how much heat they can absorb and dissipate in comparison to air coolers?
@@vonme3 pretty much. When I went H60 on my i7 8700 none K.. highest temps while gaming and I mean gaming 77 c... that's @4.3 hz.. Now that's recorded temp it was actually holding around 69 I tried radiator as intake and then as exhaust intake worked the best although my Graphics car had to intake that warm air. So when I set it to exhaust it got warm quicker Now when I would get off a game and just stay in windows it would take 15 mins to idle down to its 30 c With my air coolers I get a 70 - 73 c highest but hold temps while gaming around 55C to 64c and that's just temps moving around.. when I shut the games down and stay on windows it would idle to 30c with in 5 mins If you have more water in the system then there's where water cooling works wonders So if your case can support a bigger rad then 120 go as big as it can take And please for the love of BOB don't forget about air flow even if your water cooled
I mainly use smaller AIO's in smaller cases where a 120mm tower style cooler won't fit. I'm currently using a SilverStone SG13 with a NZXT X42 and my 4790k temps are roughly the same in that case as they are in a mid tower ATX case using a 212 EVO. I also have a Noctua NH-L12S and the X42 outperforms it in the SG13. Even a Corsair H60 (with an upgraded fan) outperforms the NH-L12S slightly in the same case, but may not in a case with a different air flow path. I don't know that either AIO would outperform the 212 EVO in an ATX case though. The X42 MAYBE, but I haven't tested it in that setup.
not even a competition against the U12s, which like Thermalrights of old; is between a 212 and a big dual tower. BeQuiet should have not bothered making this cooler. If it performs like a 212, charge within $10 of a 212 or bugger off. Noctua's stupidly expensive U12a atleast has awesome performance and the ability to fit in configs that will not house a D-15 or even U14s.

I installed a Hyper 212 EVO in a small AM4 ITX build. As far as I know, it's never had any problems as far as cooling, although I was always concerned about the weight. I'm getting reading to do another small build, and this time I might make a small support for it. I was looking at the be quiet product for this build, so I appreciate this video.
I'm obsessed with be quiet right now. I just swapped all my case fans out for silent wings 3, stock intel cooler for dark rock pro 4 and have a dark power pro 11 on the way to replace my noisy corsair tx750 which buzzes.
The Dark Rock Slim runs at 1500 rpm and the Hyper 212 Evo BE runs at 2000 rpm, if the Dark Rock Slim had 2000 rpm aswell it would outperform the Hyper 212 Evo BE by a lot or if you could run the Hyper 212 Evo BE at 1500 max the Dark Rock Slim would still out perform it, so personally for me I would choose the dark rock slim as it is slightly better and quieter, the Hyper 212 Evo BE is still a great cooler if you're on a budget :)
One pro to the Dark Rock mouting design is that you are guaranteed a solid contact with the CPU. It's easier to apply even pressure and contact versus other designs. I don't know how many times I've seen on Reddit people confessing about a 2 hour troubleshooting session before realizing that they didn't tighten their cooler enough. I've installed this cooler 4 times and every time it has been solid. One thing they could do to add more value is to include a better thermal paste like Kryonaut. At that point it would be worth the $60.00.
I recently picked up a Dark rock pro 4 for only €62! Now I only need to wait for zen 2 to release! And 2 pcs of 140mm silent wings 3 (pwn 1600 rpm model) for €15 each (normally €20-25). Looking forward to use them!
its worth it, and if you have the budget, noctua has a redux line that has a 120mm fam PWM 1700 rpm for $13.90 on amazon thats grey. it doesnt come with the vibration pads but the cooler has rubber tabs for that: and its that same quiet quality we come to know from Noctua. one or two of those and you are set and its soooooo quiet
I used a hyper 212 turbo for my first ever pc build and had it for over 10 years, it worked great. With my newest build i bought the black edition without hesitation and i have no regrets. Unless the quality went way down i should still have it in 15 years
Quite surprised that the Dark Rock slim was the same, but tbf when you have a good airflow set up by both cold air intake on the front and hot air exhaust at the back or at the top, even lower tiered air coolers would perform the same. I would like to see a test where there is no case fans, and no graphics card, so its just the CPU cooler that is active. Maybe that can put a slight gap between these 2 coolers.
Hyper 212s are great and I love them. That said I have lately been using ID Cooler Heatsinks (with Cooler Master Fans) because I they have a nice mounting system that is simple, fast and uses the motherboards back plate.
Cheaper to get a Hyper 212 Black with a replacement BeQuiet! Silent Wings 3 PWM pressure fan for the best of both worlds in terms of performance & noise then?
Noctua has a budget ine. Its basically their quality fans, colored grey, and dont come with the vibration tabs like the chromax and other lines. one of the 120mm thats pwm and 1700rpm only sets you back $13.90 from what ive checked and purchased and let me tell ya, it works so well and so quiet on my 212 BE. if ya looking for a black/grey look, its worth it
Planing on a ryzen 3600 + rx5700 build most likely gonna buy the hyper 212 it looks really clean an has a great price/performance and i think itll be able to handle pbo nicely.
Honestly you should try to save up for a rx 5700 xt. Its way bettrr but the thermals are kimda bad so you shoukd probably wait tik the aib cards come out in 2 weeks
@@einzuwasu5563 i think saving is the best thing to do tbh. The rx 5700 xt is a better buck for ur money. Btw u should look into the vega 56 its as good as a gtx 1070 and costs like 200 dollar or something
How cooler can have a parameter such as TDP? It depends on many factors, but mostly on delta between ambient and the source of heat, we don't know at what temps they got that figure based on... Industry standard is to provide thermal resistance of the radiator, with this you can calculate how it will perform withing your aplication.
@@jeffrey_georgeEveryone will have different results obviously especially in the diy space of computers but I now I went from that r5 2600 to a r5 3600 and new mobo and the hyper 212 does an awesome job keeping that chip cool and quiet.
I have be quiet! fans in my case, and I was disappointed by the noise. Then, I realized that I was just hearing the air moving. As RPMs increase on quiet fans like the Silent Wings,, the system will reach a point where air flow itself generates the noise. I could see these fans being close enough in acoustics that you primarily heard noise from flowing air with just a little bit of noise from the 212 fan. The only way to beat air flow noise is to reduce the RPM and either tolerate higher temps, get a larger cooler, or get larger fans (reduces the air velocity for a given flow rate).
I doubt you ran into the same install process as the hyper 212 black edition with the 212 evo. The 212 evo had an adjustable scissor like mounting mechanism which didnt require any screws from the bottom.
Well would like to add the I bought the 212 rgb version and it was missing a bracket screw and the rgb didn't work on the fan and so i submitted a ticket and did everything properand gave proof of purchase but i never heard back from them at CoolerMaster
I don't think the bottom of the Be Quiet! cooler (where it touches the CPU heat-spreader) is flat. At 7.26 you can see that the center of it kinda looks pointed outwards instead of flat and mirror-like
Be Quiet also makes Pure Rock (not slim) which IMO would be more appropriate to compare with the Hyper 212 as both have 4 heat pipes, both have 120mm fans and both retail for about the same $$. Great video though, as always!
Really disappointed with my Hyper 212 so far. I am changing it for the dark rock slim since it's really loud when spinning fast and it has a constant hum which is really annoying.
I concur. My Hyper 212 Evo (with the stock fan) is also very loud at 75% RPM or above. This cooler also has some vibration issues; it comes with little pads but despite this its build quality is not the best. I'm going to try the Dark Rock Slim
G'day Greg, nice comparison, once you started flashing B-Roll I found it hard to tell the difference because they look so similar, from a science perspective do you think the difference of the heat pipes at the bottom of the mounting block touching the CPU (C/M at 0:15), as opposed to being in the middle of the block (B/Q 0:42) makes a cooling difference & would swapping the fans show this?
I have the 212 evo and it is great cooler for my ryzen 1800x the new 212 rgb black has better fan sf120r more silent. If i do another build i will take the cooler master 212 rgb black with extra fan for push pull. Qnd by the way the adapter for the second fan is already in the box for people who ask. ( for both 212 evo and 212 rgb black)
Ohh if you get a chance could you review the Enermax T50 or the Scythe Ninja 5 personally the Scythe looks very good thinking about switching my AIO out for it.
hows the dark rock slim compare to the non slim im tryna decide which to get i would prefer slim for the look i want to use i7 k but just with default asus xmp
sebastian primus no need noctua has 5 heat pipes compared to the 4 on these coolers, also it’s noctua so obviously it’s gonna preform better only drawbacks are looks and price.
sebastian primus your right I got it confused with the pure rock which would have been a better comparison. In that case they would preform very similarly it mostly comes down to looks.
I was about to buy the 212 black but i didn't find any stores with it in stock near me so i spent the evening taking measurements of the case since i have modded it somewhat to accommodate extra 12cm side and top fans. So the 212 doesn't fit for about 0.5-1cm.. then i went looking for a shorter cooler and i found 2 choices both better cooling than the 212. the first is the Cryorig H7 the shortest one but i went for the Scythe Mugen 5 Rev B at 15.5cm tall it should just clear the edge of the side fan. It's also the best performing cooler from what i could find. Thermals are a bit better than the dark rock 4 and acoustics are better too. Price wise in Greece you can find the 212 black and the H7 for about 32€ inc tax and the mugen 5 for 40€ inc tax. But it would be nice to have all three of them in a single review see the exact margins between them
As I recall annodization increases thermal transfer rates. I remember reading some studies done by some chinese universities on radial pin fin heatsinks. (Still surprised they dont use those in computers). Their annodized ones from the control group transferred heat better. Dont remember what their conclusion was as to why.
The point of the Dark Rock slim is its size. It's much shorter and fits ina lot if aATX and ITX cases while most tower coolers can't while still getting good temps
Got the 212 recently, & when I can get the RAM, I can start my build. What is the CFM rating on the D. R. Slim model? Thanks Greg 🤓 great comparison! Would like to see an airflow test with the 212
im just looking at this(dark rock slim and deepcool gammaxx GT )because my cooler clearance is literally just 155mm. or ill just go with a 240mm AIO but eh.
Question for anyone who can answer: I bought an Hyper 212 EVO a few years back, and have had some problems with the cooler fitting in some ATX cases, the heat pipes end in these nipples, for lack of a better word, that stick up just a little further than the case allows. The 212 BE appears to end a little more flush with the fans that attach to them. Can anyone confirm if the newer model coolers from CoolerMaster were reworked to be a tad shorter in the last couple of years? I'd really like to be able to close my cases fully again! :)
old post but as a guideline, check what cooler size allowed in you case specs, usually what's important is the length from the base to the end of heatpipes (height). cm212 models are usually 160mm so check if the case can support 160mm cooler. even the low end cases will specify that nowadays.
It looks as if the bq! metal braces don't fit for "standard" fans, they are kind of short. Not too much of an issue to me, because there's no need for me to change the fan (Silent Wings 3 are great I'm running one of them on my cooler, too) … but some people like RGB … Do "standard" fans fit?
Compare this to the _Thermalright Macho Direct_ ? Bit of an unheard brand but I think it's pricing is rather good. The MD is $43 USD. I'd also like to see the _Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT_ compared to the _Noctua D15_ or _Dark Rock Pro 4_
I have several Evo 212 with the heat pipes right next to each other on the block and were sold advertising that "CDC" technology or "Continuous Direct Contact" and then say that having spaced like the 212 Black is worse and cause hot spots. Is this all made up? where they wrong? or is this one worse then the original 212 evo?
Nice review! What I'm still wondering, are HDT (Heatpipe Direct Contact) coolers like the EVO vs copper base coolers like the Dark Rock or Cryorig, effected by Ryzen 3600's offset chiplet placement and thus heat generation? Also how much effect would a push-pull config have on cooling performance on both of these coolers? For my R5 3600 build, with 2x Cryorig QF120 Balanced fans, with push-pull: I am torn between going for the copper base Cryorig H7 (having bought one fan too many :P) or a Hyper 212 Black which is HDT. What is wisdom?
The Dark Rock Slim is a very nice looking cooler. So is the Hyper 212 Black Edition but I think I can say the Dark Rock Slim is nicer looking. For the people wanting to build your first PC or just a PC on a budget. I'd imagine, if the price was $35-$40 for the Dark Rock Slim. People would be more compelled to buy it. 5 to 10 dollars for a slightly better fan and instillation experience is usually an okay deal for most people. Especially if it looks nice. For others $30 for a brand they might like a little better or in an attempt to keep the sound level low. It gets hard since Noctua products exist as well but, those are things that might be more worth it for some people.
Go for it, its great. i got it and then upgraded the fan to the REDUX Noctua line fan 120mm 1700rpm PWM for only $13.90 more, since for what i see its the same quality fan, just without the anti vibration corner tabs and came in grey. i went for a stealthy black grey blue look since my DDR3 Mobo are those colors. Dude my FX 8320 stays so cool now, such an upgrade to the stock cooler that was on it.
afterall it is all about moving the air accumulated in that radiator and speed can accelerate the cooling down time? maybe noisier but does the job no? I have not tried it yet but will do it soon
Thank you for this quick test mah man! Sadly the DR Slim is a tad overpriced for what it offers, for a few bucks more you can get a proper DR4 or Noctua NH-U12...
From the videos I've seen Greg the difference between the evo and the black is the fan. Because videos I saw showed the evo as being loud but my 212 black is super duper quiet on a 2700x
There's one thing many people don't know about fans! Almost all fans have a motor sound that comes from the control electronics inside the fan. The speed regulator circuit inside many fans creates a special frequency. NOCTUA fans do not have this problem. They have a specially made control circuit that does not create this problem. As soon as you cut the power to the fan, this sound disappears immediately. Many fans have problems with this and therefore you almost always get a special fan sound inside a computer case. PWM is pulse width modulation and changing the frequency to achieve higher and lower volts. This creates little heat but creates flickering that can be seen in some LEDs. light or beep sound in battery screwdrivers. Ordinary linear regulators that do not have this problem get very hot, which makes them impractical to use. I have replaced all fans with NOCTUA fans and you can hear the difference. Rhen there are also many cheap fans that are not balanced correctly and they can vibrate.
Use a Hyper 212 Turbo(2 fans version) for a long time, that thing was just to good for the price. Nearly every downside can be counter by "but it is less than 30$"
How would you say the Quad Lumi compares to these two in terms of cooling/noise? Edit: It would be cool if you compared the Dark Rock Slim vs. the 212 BE with the Be Quiet! fan, as a Black Edition + Silent Wings 3 still comes out slightly cheaper than the Dark Rock Slim
will the Dark Rock Slim fit in a Phanteks P300? cause I saw the dimensions of both of these are the same and see that the 212 fits but some people say the DR Slim wont.

my wraith stealth is around 10-15C higher than cm 212 led (1 fan) when playing games like bfv, in prime95 small i did hit 95C after just 30 seconds and it thermal throttled my 3600 with stealth but with 212 hyper led it kept it below 90C for long period. my ambient is pretty hot though so keep that in mind and both done in open and closed case, no difference. i would say the performance of cm 212 is about similar to wraith prism (stock for higher end ryzen). i have no idea if the black edition is much better though.
Nice balanced review, Greg, I appreciate your honesty. I'm still rocking the 212 Evo in my media server, keeping my FX 8350 nice and cool. It's been running almost 24/7 for close to seven years and the 212 hasn't missed a beat.

Greg, you may be psychic lol.

Man oh man your videos are actually really good
would love to see a test vs a 212 EVO, AMD Wraith Spire, Wraith Stealth etc

Not the point of the video, but still something to consider.
be honest, you use that thermal pad so that you don't need to put in the effort to clean the old paste off ;)

Are those the fans that come when buying a fractal case? I thought they were not pwm though? or did you buy a pwm version fan separately?
im right there with ya. i got noctua's budget line fans which is basically their quality fans without the pads (the grey ones, they are only $14!). moved the original cooler master fan to the front and put the 1700 rpm noctua fan in its place and boy, i can barely hear my pc anymore. the noctua doesnt really go above 900 rpm like ever (And i have an fx 8320 processor) and my cpu has been pretty much staying no hotter than 48 C like ever, sometimes my processor just hangs at room temperature or lower is the AC is on. tbh the best purchase ive ever made for this older PC by far

You could just buy a hyper 212 and throw a bequiet fan on it for less than the bequiet cooler that comes with said fan.

Cheers!
In my experience AIO are great until they heat soak then you see they're true nature
I say if your going AIO and if it possible go with the ones with bigger radiator
Main reason I dropped my H60 for the world of air coolers
@@MRD0889 Interesting. So if I understood you correctly, AIO have more specific cutoff for how much heat they can absorb and dissipate in comparison to air coolers?
@@vonme3 pretty much. When I went H60 on my i7 8700 none K.. highest temps while gaming and I mean gaming 77 c... that's @4.3 hz..
Now that's recorded temp it was actually holding around 69
I tried radiator as intake and then as exhaust intake worked the best although my Graphics car had to intake that warm air. So when I set it to exhaust it got warm quicker
Now when I would get off a game and just stay in windows it would take 15 mins to idle down to its 30 c
With my air coolers I get a 70 - 73 c highest but hold temps while gaming around 55C to 64c and that's just temps moving around.. when I shut the games down and stay on windows it would idle to 30c with in 5 mins
If you have more water in the system then there's where water cooling works wonders
So if your case can support a bigger rad then 120 go as big as it can take
And please for the love of BOB don't forget about air flow even if your water cooled
Just the review I was looking for 👀 thanks!!
You should compare the dark rock slim to the NH-U12
Obviously u12
notctua is king of air cooler
not even a competition against the U12s, which like Thermalrights of old; is between a 212 and a big dual tower.

That Hyper 212 Black makes me want to replace my Hyper 212X just for aesthetic reasons. Really want that brushed gunmetal black plate.
its worth it, and if you have the budget, noctua has a redux line that has a 120mm fam PWM 1700 rpm for $13.90 on amazon thats grey. it doesnt come with the vibration pads but the cooler has rubber tabs for that: and its that same quiet quality we come to know from Noctua. one or two of those and you are set and its soooooo quiet
I used a hyper 212 turbo for my first ever pc build and had it for over 10 years, it worked great. With my newest build i bought the black edition without hesitation and i have no regrets. Unless the quality went way down i should still have it in 15 years

I hope Coolermaster make 6 pipes and 8 pipes version of this
Quite surprised that the Dark Rock slim was the same, but tbf when you have a good airflow set up by both cold air intake on the front and hot air exhaust at the back or at the top, even lower tiered air coolers would perform the same.
I would like to see a test where there is no case fans, and no graphics card, so its just the CPU cooler that is active. Maybe that can put a slight gap between these 2 coolers.
Which is more effective for a cooler's heat absorption? The thickness/mass of the fin array, or number of heat pipes?
Hyper 212s are great and I love them. That said I have lately been using ID Cooler Heatsinks (with Cooler Master Fans) because I they have a nice mounting system that is simple, fast and uses the motherboards back plate.
Cheaper to get a Hyper 212 Black with a replacement BeQuiet! Silent Wings 3 PWM pressure fan for the best of both worlds in terms of performance & noise then?
Performance is the same either way, and SW3 fans aren't cheap. I'd only recommend this is you're concerned about sound and prefer the look of the 212.
SW3 fans depending on which size be it 120 or 140 range anywhere from 20 to 25 or so USD on Amazon. So they can be spendy
Noctua has a budget ine. How cooler can have a parameter such as TDP?
It depends on many factors, but mostly on delta between ambient and the source of heat, we don't know at what temps they got that figure based on...

G'day Greg,
nice comparison, once you started flashing B-Roll I found it hard to tell the difference because they look so similar,
from a science perspective do you think the difference of the heat pipes at the bottom of the mounting block touching the CPU (C/M at 0:15), as opposed to being in the middle of the block (B/Q 0:42) makes a cooling difference & would swapping the fans show this?
Yup I agree

Kind of surprising, that the "budget" cooler is just about as good as the other. Did not expect that.
I have the OG 212 EVO with the translucent fan and no paint. 6600K with 4.5 Ghz no problems at all.

It's more of a downgrade honestly. Same performance and risk of leaking.
Have you got a list of coolers that perform best? If not, it'd be cool to see a video that compares as many coolers as possible.

Not too much of an issue to me, because there's no need for me to change the fan (Silent Wings 3 are great I'm running one of them on my cooler, too) … but some people like RGB …
Do "standard" fans fit?

It gets hard since Noctua products exist as well but, those are things that might be more worth it for some people.
thinking of going from the silver Hyper 212 to the black one. it looks great.
I really like how the be quiet cooler looks and I love quiet coolers. I would definitely pick the be quiet.
It's the fans, not the cooler. If you want a quieter fan, buy a quieter fan.

From the videos I've seen Greg the difference between the evo and the black is the fan. Because videos I saw showed the evo as being loud but my 212 black is super duper quiet on a 2700x
Maybe you could of shown how to attach the fan and was it easier on one over the other?
Nearly every downside can be counter by "but it is less than 30$"
Hi, 212 black and 212 RGB black are the same cooler except for the FAN, right? Btw Mugen 5 rev. B is better or worst than 212 black?

Edit: It would be cool if you compared the Dark Rock Slim vs. the 212 BE with the Be Quiet! fan, as a Black Edition + Silent Wings 3 still comes out slightly cheaper than the Dark Rock Slim
will the Dark Rock Slim fit in a Phanteks P300? cause I saw the dimensions of both of these are the same and see that the 212 fits but some people say the DR Slim wont.
