I'd like to add for anyone looking at buying a p6 for astro mode. I know Shayne said it not hugely better than 4a but in certain conditions I disagree. Comparing my 3xl, 4a5g and now pixel 6 pro the pixel 6 does substantially better if you're somewhere with more light pollution. The larger sensor let's it get more stars than the previous phones can since they pretty much rely on software only. P6 still does to but the hardware is much better.
I also suspect the difference in quality will get wider as Google updates, the newer sensor and optimizes it. You're going to get 90% of what the Pixel 6 today with even a Pixel 4a, but you probably want to be on a tensor chip if you want feature drops and tweaks. Not to mention the much bigger sensor on the Pixel 6. But no rush, it'll be supported with 5 years of security update so it's perfectly fine to Rock! Anything more recent than a Pixel 4a and you'll still get the time lapse feature.
Not sure what mode you are talking about. I have a Pixel 3 and it only has a night mode and its not very good. Can't even take a photo of the moon with it. Will look like washed out light bulb zero detail. So I hope its better than a Pixel 3.
@@Physics072 so a few things. You dont want to use nightsight with a fullmoon. its way to much light. i actually when taking moon pics use the normal camera and turn the exposure slider all the way down. For astro mode you have to have the phone on a tripod or balanced against something perfectly still. then go to night sight mode and wait a few seconds and youll see a little pop up and the camera shutter button icon will change
It's a really fun hobby. During my 4-minute stretches, I often have aircraft fly through it, which is actually really cool, although sometimes it's not what I'm looking for! You get really cool images of airplanes and satellites checkering their way through the sky and the time lapse looks amazing
Just ordered my Pixel 6 and it'll arrive tomorrow so I'd better sleep because it'll arrive early. This is great content! That photo turned out beautifully. Have you ever captured astrovideo? Aren't the new Astro modes supposed to add a clip of video along with the photos sometimes? When i used to have a 4a 5g I actually captured a shooting star or satellite that way.
I got the pixel 6 Pro but here in Canada winter has arrived and it's too cold to stand outside for 4 minutes to wait for a picture to be taken at the moment. Also there's ice crystals in the air right now that may interfere with the picture.
That example of lining up all the stars does not make sense. The sky will not rotate 180 degrees like your example in 5 minutes. So you either rotated the camera on a mount or it was a hours long exposure to get that much sky rotation. Which is it?
Can you imagine if Apple implemented stacking software for astrophotography like the Pixel does!! The 30 second exposure on the iPhone is really good when compared with the 4 minutes stacking photos from the Pixel.
The iPhone 13 Mini combines ten 3s exposures, the iPhone 13 Pro combines three 10s exposures as far as I know. But Apple doesn't seem to track the sky. An iPhone 13 Mini produces in its 30s mode longer star trails than a Pixel 3a in its 52 seconds mode (The 3a combines thirteen 4 seconds exposures). So, star trails could be the reason why Apple doesn't let you choose 4 minutes. By the way, the 3a was slightly better than the 13 Mini, even though they captured a similar total amount of light from the stars, but the 13 Mini was much better regarding handheld astrophotography. Though, one user tested that the new Pixel 6 is better than the iPhone 13 Pro regarding handheld astrophotography.
The metadata from each phone shows the 13PM doing 10second exposures. So, 3x10 seconds to make the 30. The Pixel shows 16 seconds, so 15x16 second stacked images. There is the Nocturn app for apple that does something similar. I will be doing a video on that on shortly.

Thanks for the sub mate! Between the two for astro, I would say they are the same. In fact, I cant see much difference between the 4, 5 and 6 to be honest with astro.

@@ShayneMostyn so it turns out that I was down South and went to take some pictures of the stars, and got Aurora instead. Didn't know there was a small showing of it at the time. Got some great photos, you'd love it :)
Do you know the deal with what I have heard regarding the 50mp sensor on this phone. People are saying it has 50mp but you can't actually use the 50p, there is no option for it and the phone natively does not use the full 50mp.
It's pixel binned. Instead of each pixel having it's own R, G, or B filter over it, there is a larger R, G, or B filter over a square of four pixels. The four pixel sites act as a larger single pixel.
@@JamesSymmonds I understand somewhat the pixel binning. But for example the Samsung default on the main camera is 12mp, but you have the option to switch to 108mp to get the maximum resolution. So what I am saying is from what I have seen others say is that the pixel defaults to 12mp and there is no option to utilize the 50mp. O am just trying to see if this is true or not.
@@KurtBaumanMobilePhotography Samsung's implementation must be different because the way the Pixel does it makes it impossible for you to get more detail because you have four adjacent pixels all seeing the same exact light due to all four having the same exact color filter over them. To get detail, it takes the information from adjacent pixels with the other filter colors to create one color dot. In the Pixel implementation if you did go "full resolution", you would have all of these green pixels being blended in with surrounding pixels of one red, one blue, and two greens. The resolution loss is at the physical color filters level.
@@JamesSymmonds No, physically, Samsung's sensor doesn't really behave differently. Samsung uses a Nona Bayer sensor, Google uses a Quad Bayer sensor. The difference is simply that Samsung uses the high resolution mode of the sensor and Google doesn't use it.
@@KurtBaumanMobilePhotography Yes, the Pixel 6 doesn't offer a high resolution mode. That's disappointing. They even don't seem to use the high resolution mode for digital zoom. They only use the lower resolution mode of the sensor. Samsung and several other manufacturers do offer a high resolution mode. There is no reason why Google couldn't do that. The problem is that Quad Bayer and Nona Bayer color filter arrays can produce artifacts in the high resolution mode. It seems that some manufacturers are not able to handle those artifacts, so some manufacturers simply decide to ignore the high resolution mode of the sensor. Samsung uses machine learning in order to handle the sensor in its high resolution mode. What's really misleading from Google is also that the official specs even don't mention that the 48 megapixel tele sensor is a Quad Bayer sensor.
4 minutes isn't very long for astrophotography, because most good photos that good astrophotographers take take many continuous nights, with night-long exposures. But it is pretty long considering it is a phone.
I thought I was doing something wrong and that the 4 minute countdown was a setting but I'm glad it's just the phone. I got the pro and one pic I was able to get was amazing, I've been using a Canon rebel eos t3i and Galaxy note 10+, so when I saw the pic I couldn't believe it.
Strange to open with "lot's of negative reviews", when there really aren't. Most of them are very positive. And the reason they didn't "sell astro-photography really hard", is because they did. When it came out.
@@ShayneMostyn I have upgraded my phone to a Google pixel 6 (pretty bummed out I have to wait up to a month as its out of stock) I chosen this phone for the astrophotography side of things. What would make this phone perfect for me is a memory card slot and a 3D scan ability

Yeah they added time lapse to pretty much anything released after 2019. The Pixel 3 doesn't have the time lapse feature, even if you have Android 12. But the Pixel 4a has it and I can't imagine the Pixel 4a 5G would not.

Hey man love your videos and ive got one question, ive been watching all your videos, and how would work a sandmarc polarizer filter at night to remove the flare? mainly in videos or tough situations of light pollution?would be like a good idea or just dumb?
@@ShayneMostyn I wasn't knocking the fact that it is on a tripod. The fact that I take 5 to 10 minute images on my equatorial mount. 4 minutes is not that bad. I will be getting a Pixel 6 as my Pixel 2XL is on the old side now and not supported anymore. I'm am sold :-)
Four minutes downside? LOL. How long it take to use top Nikon, Sony or whatever? Set up a tripod, find the North Stare, in Europe or NA, get the star tracker going, then spend hours postprocessing . Four minutes downside? LOL
No need for a star tracker. Sure, you can use one, but you will get similar results with other phones at 30 seconds let alone a top Nikon. So when you compare it to S21U, P40Pro, iphone13PM all of which shoot 30 seconds to get these shots, yes, 4 mins is a downside.
Negative reviews? Most say it's the top two or three as far as photos. However it's next level with the AI and features. Or is it negative because it's not *the best ever!!!*
The photo ai is the same reason people don't like the photos. They're useless once you get them off the camera. Those little tweeks and fixes fall apart once they're no longer 5" screens. Still won't come close to the Pro Raw photos on Apple.
Not at all mate. I remember watching video with people carrying on about how bad the video is and the camera is generally not much better than the previous phone. More and more reviews coming out now in support of the phone, but early on, lots of negative reviews. I suspect it had more to do with the embargoes that Google put onto creators than the phone itself.
This is a pretty sheep performance of this phone my three years old Mi Phone took better Pictures an that in 16 to 32 seconds. Pixel 6 pro did not have a mode where you can adjust all the photo Parameter by yourself.
I tend to agree mate. If it used the whole 50MP it may be better, but in reality for astro, its no better than the older ones. No, there is no manual mode.
Hmm. Im not recommending this one mate. Its great for astro, but not so much for everything else. Its a little hit and miss, thats just my opinion though. I have the P40Pro as well. Its far superior than this one.
Its all in the noise, or the lack of noise to be more accurate. For years we have stacked images with DSLR to remove the digital noise from astro photos. This does it automatically. There is a significant difference, but its a trade off with the 4 minutes.

Don't forget to try the zoom, please.
I will mate, as well as the ultra wide
4 minutes isn't very long for astrophotography, because most good photos that good astrophotographers take take many continuous nights, with night-long exposures. But it is pretty long considering it is a phone.
How do you keep exposure to 4 mins ? My pixel 6 only have few seconds of exposure
You need it on a tripod
I thought I was doing something wrong and that the 4 minute countdown was a setting but I'm glad it's just the phone. I got the pro and one pic I was able to get was amazing, I've been using a Canon rebel eos t3i and Galaxy note 10+, so when I saw the pic I couldn't believe it.
HAHA when i first got the pixel 4a I thought the same thing. Then I was bloody impressed with what it could do.
Your IG link on your channel page doesn't work
Thanks mate, sorted now.
Strange to open with "lot's of negative reviews", when there really aren't. Most of them are very positive. And the reason they didn't "sell astro-photography really hard", is because they did. When it came out.
Question can we zoom in on an area of the sky then proceed along with the astrophotography mode?
I honestly dont know. I will have to try that.
@@ShayneMostyn I have upgraded my phone to a Google pixel 6 (pretty bummed out I have to wait up to a month as its out of stock) I chosen this phone for the astrophotography side of things. What would make this phone perfect for me is a memory card slot and a 3D scan ability
Finally after a month + on Wednesday 5th January we are going to have clear night skys with frost and negative 3 degrees c.
Get to play with the astro mode. Bought a power bank, bought a Bluetooth camera shutter button a decent tripod (K&F). I have been waiting for this momwment long enough, know my bloody luck it will change to cloudy
That's a great photo. Does anyone know if when shooting in raw, you can save all frames individually? My phone is due November 23rd, can't wait to get outside with it.
Do you mean all of the 16 second exposures? No, you cant do that mate.
@@ShayneMostyn That's a bummer. Might have been able to do a bit more processing in Photoshop with all the exposures.
Hey, thanks for this review ! I would like to know about the app you to take the photo, is it the native one frome google ? It's detect automatically than you are doing an astro photography ? Thanks 😉
Yes its the camera app mate. Once its on a tripod and its dark enough, it will give you that option.
@@ShayneMostyn Awesome, thanks ! I'm french but going to live in Yukon soon, so...I'd like to enjoy that ! Any tripod to recommend ?
So does the pixel 6 also have the astrophotography feature or is it only the pixel 6 pro?
They both have it. Its exactly the same on both.
@@ShayneMostyn Ok, thank you!
Sounds daft but can you use the optical zoom for astro? Or the moon shot for the orion nebula or the like?
Isn't daft at all. According to two users, one can indeed choose the periscope camera. I have seen some periscope sample images and more stars are visible per angle.
I was waiting for your video for this smartphone, soon I will have to change my P30PRO that strangely no longer has the same photographic performance as before, do you recommend the purchase of 6pro pixels or do I wait for the galaxy s22 ultra?
Thank you very much.
Well done !!!
I waiting for night timelapse 😀
I have Pixel 4a5g. To astro photography it is good but not to astrotimelapse. Maybe Pixel 6 have tools to this.
You can do it on that phone already mate. Get yourself the intervalometer app and you will be able to do it.
Yeah they added time lapse to pretty much anything released after 2019. The Pixel 3 doesn't have the time lapse feature, even if you have Android 12. But the Pixel 4a has it and I can't imagine the Pixel 4a 5G would not.
Hi have you tested with Xiaomi mi 11 ultra?
4 minutes is a bargain. It would take you much more to take the photos, stack them and edit.
Is that what you said on Facebook to get banned? :D Youre right of course.
@@ShayneMostyn 😂😂😂😂 my exact words to a person were "You're pathetic". According to Facebook I was guilty of intimidation.
What Bortle class sky are you under?
This was a 3.
What you think about mi 11 ultra for this kind of photos?
Yep, it would work
Would you put this above the 21 Ulta?
Waiting for pixel 7,7pro camera astrology 😀
How well do you think the pro would work looking through a telescope?
I actually havent tried that yet. I will have to check that out with the pixel.
@@ShayneMostyn my girlfriend curntly uses an old iphone 6s plus so I'm not to worried I'm hoping it's an upgrade I'd be shocked if it was worse with moon photos and the distant planets fingers crossed I think my phone comes sometime next month
Good shot! Now deep in the back of the mind is always something new. But the 4 minutes now going to be next in a raw mode. I have a Nikon D3300 and its jpeg output is the main reason that former marvel is now collecting dust. Unthinkable to use a Nikon in non-raw mode.
Pro worth it over base for astrophotography in your opinion?
Not in my opinion mate.
Hey man love your videos and ive got one question, ive been watching all your videos, and how would work a sandmarc polarizer filter at night to remove the flare? mainly in videos or tough situations of light pollution?would be like a good idea or just dumb?
Thanks mate. Not a dumb question at all. Its actually on my list to try out. I suspect it wont work, but stay tuned.
Cant wait to get a google gcam mod from pixel 6 on my Samsung A52.
I think Pixel 4a vs Pixel 6 astrophotography comparison would be interesting
I can do that. I suspect they will be almost the same.
Can you do the same with vivo x70 Pro Plus ..need your review on the same
Can I do this on my Pixel 6. Or do I have to have the pro.
Any pixel will do this mate.
Apparently the 6 Pro is better for astrophotography. Any chance you will get to use it?
No I wont be mate. I couldn't justify the extra $$ Its the same camera, so I doubt its any better.
@@ShayneMostyn I read the pro has more astrophotography features using telephoto. Such a shame. Australia must have some amazing views. Peace m8
@@ShayneMostyn It's...not the same camera though?
@@StormyP101 Beside the telephoto, which I didnt use for Astro, its the same camera mate.
Do you think pixel 6 can take moon photos?
Probably just as good as the iPhone mate
is the night time lapse longer than one second, or as in 5?
Nope, just the one second still.
is this posible on pixel 6 or this mode its just on pixel 6 pro?
All pixels mate.
If 4 min is that long my poco x3 pro suggest me to take 30min for this kind of photo😅
It's 6pro or 6a ?
How does shayne likes his steak? You guessed it "bloody" And "raw" 😂
BAM! Thats gold
Try doing a 4min Plank to pass the time 🤗
HAHAHA last thing I want to do it get down on the ground at night!
my pixel 6 pro is great at astro and many other things but as a phone its horrible.
With astrophotography 4 minutes is nothing. I normally take 5 min exposures and sometime 10 min exposures
Obviously with a tracker mate. This is a phone on a tripod. Other phones on tripods are doing it in 30 seconds. That was my point.
I knew this phone wasn't going to be available for India. But I am waiting to try the gcam on my phone mi 11 ultra
Sounds good mate.
hey, can you explain how to get 4min ? mine only do 1:00 or 1:30
It will need to be dark enough and be on a tripod, thats it mate. You dont need anything else.
Please please do one for OnePlus 9 pro as well 🙏🏻
Negative reviews? Most say it's the top two or three as far as photos. However it's next level with the AI and features.
Or is it negative because it's not *the best ever!!!*
The photo ai is the same reason people don't like the photos. They're useless once you get them off the camera. Those little tweeks and fixes fall apart once they're no longer 5" screens. Still won't come close to the Pro Raw photos on Apple.
@@JLawL lol
Not at all mate. I remember watching video with people carrying on about how bad the video is and the camera is generally not much better than the previous phone. More and more reviews coming out now in support of the phone, but early on, lots of negative reviews. I suspect it had more to do with the embargoes that Google put onto creators than the phone itself.
Give me original image plz
This is a pretty sheep performance of this phone my three years old Mi Phone took better Pictures an that in 16 to 32 seconds.
Pixel 6 pro did not have a mode where you can adjust all the photo Parameter by yourself.
I tend to agree mate. If it used the whole 50MP it may be better, but in reality for astro, its no better than the older ones. No, there is no manual mode.
Light polution good

I have trash sony xperia I ii. God i regret buying this trash so bad ! Need a different phone . Was thinking of going with this phone
Hmm. Im not recommending this one mate. Its great for astro, but not so much for everything else. Its a little hit and miss, thats just my opinion though. I have the P40Pro as well. Its far superior than this one.
Selam do
How can it be better if it takes 4f-ing minutes to take the night photo.... And others just 30sc... And is just slightly different 🙄🥱👏🤦🤦🤦
Same thing I was thinking. I saw the video with the iPhone 13, S21, and Huawei. And I really don't see the difference.
Its all in the noise, or the lack of noise to be more accurate. For years we have stacked images with DSLR to remove the digital noise from astro photos. This does it automatically. There is a significant difference, but its a trade off with the 4 minutes.
You can't possibly be serious man lmao. The difference in quality of photos between the iPhone and pixel are night and day.
