I love homemade split pea soup. It was my sister's favorite, and I had the amazing honor to make this for her the last week she was with us while she was on hospice. I will always cherish her smile when she ate it and will feel close to her every time I make and eat this soup.
Hi Chelsea My son and I, love your channel. Watch it religiously when is posted. Sometimes, I watch it twice or three times for receipts. My son actually dreamed you and your farm. Thank you for giving us hope and life lessons in dark days. Take care ❤
I always start making broth from a ham hock and will use the ham bits in the soup. Pea soup usually planning ahead. Broth one day and overnight in fridge. Next day skim off fat then add the ingredients. Pea soup in a couple of hours. Winter must at least twice a year to make huge pot. 😊
Hi Chelsea, I love your self sufficient lifestyle so much I’d like to emulate it! Have you considered writing a book about your life building and sustains a farm. So many city and suburban dwellers would love to have a functional, and learning by experience model. By the way we are first in line for your yummy cookbook.
I've been subscribed to your channel since you have approximately 60,000 subscribers. I've been checking now and then to see how quickly you are gaining new subscribers and holy moly! You are gaining popularity faster than any other channel I watch - Bravo & Congratulations! You deserve loads of subscribers because you provide us with honest, genuine reviews and advice. Thank you! - Jana
Split pea is my favorite soup on a cold day! I often make it in the pressure cooker, as did my mother. Making it brings back wonderful memories of my mother teaching me to cook. For us, cheddar biscuits with chives are a typical accompaniment to the soup. I also make all my yogurt in the instant pot. Works great for me but I don’t make anywhere near the quantities that you need.
How lovely for your kids that they have all those memories all gathered together! Can’t wait til they are available to us too. Thanks for your efforts!
Try adding some marjorum to the pea soup....provides amazing flavor....German style. We also add chopped celery and chunks of ham, or slices of smoked sausage, depending on what have.
The soup resembles a traditional Dutch dish called Snert. We have been making this soup in the winter for centuries. In addition to the pork, smoked sausage is also often used. The first recipe dates from 1520 and was really a farmer's soup. Later it was also served to the skater in stalls on the side of frozen ditches and rivers. This is still done to this day together with hot chocolate.
I ❤ split pea soup. I remember watching my Grandma make split pea soup and it was amazing. Just kite yours. But never with potatoes. Something I will try. And definitely with your biscuits. I'm very excited for your cookbook to come out. I really want to try some recipes. Thank you for sharing ❤
You can get wireless greenhouse sensors that gives a notification on your phone when temp. drop below a certain temp.! I've seen growers use them on youtube (Tuya smart brand). So then, you don't have to worry anymore. And they are very cheap.
Best of luck with your cook books! Can't wait to hear more:) My great aunt Gusty was a FABULOUS cook. Especially her desserts. I googled her name one day because I couldn't remember the name of the cemetery where she was buried. Low and behold, she was in a Wisconsin cookbook! It was filled with recipes from women around the state. Her recipe was for a wonderful chocolate cake and frosting. I make it often with good thoughts of times spent at her house. Also, it was interesting because the women were referred to by their husbands names. I had never used butter milk before that:)
Try making split yellow peas soup that will become ur favorite hopefully u can find them I have a friend in Missouri that has looked everywhere and can't find them
Hey Chelsea 😊 Oh my I can’t wait to order your cook book 📚 That going to be fun trying out new recipes.. Love you videos.. always enjoy watching and learning new things Thanks you Blessing 👩🌾
Your biscuit and jam with thhe pea soup reminded me of someting I eat that everyone thinks is wierd. A long time ago, I worked with a woman who had severaal kids and didn't have time to eat before coming to work. She would make scrambled or hard boiled eggs and toast, then put blackberry jam on one of the two toast slices and make a sandwish out of it. It turned the eggs kind of a blackish color, but it was delish. I have made them ever since, more than 40 years .
Hi Chelsea. So nice to see a little bare ground again eh. We love pea soup too. I never thought of adding a little lemon in it.I must try it. I sometimes add some barley too. Love ur earthenware bowls….it’s beautiful. I have my grammas bowl.it’s probably 100 years old by now and I still use it. Great video and a great channel. Cheers friend 🌷
I love split pea soup - a tradition from my French mother! We always use a ham bone & pieces of ham. I also add celery to mine. Thanks for sharing tidbits of your busy lives. Great progress on your farm! Blessings to all🤗💜🇨🇦
I love the snert you made, it is typical dutch❤, I always put some Sambal in my bowl, sambal is hot pepper sauce, and I slice the bacon an put som on dark rye bread, delicious!
Pea soup looks so good . . . i add celery and turnip to mine, with a ham bone and left over pieces of ham from our Easter meal. Cornbread also goes really well with this soup. So Nice to see seeds going in the pots!!
I could eat split pea soup several lunches a week. It's so good, if not too visually appealing. Lol my grandma used smoked ham or smoked turkey legs. Both delicious.
I've never made split pea soup-I cannot wait to try yours! Happy Belated Birthday! So wonderful that your family has been blessed by your new dairy cows. So happy for you all!
I love your videos. I'm a bit surprise as a french people that you eat jam with this soup but why not, i would like it the one after the other. It's funny 😉😊
I love the song on top of your cabinet. I love seeing all the seeds you started. I let my 2 year old granddaughter help me start 2 trays of different flowers. I'm so excited because they have already started growing. I'm in southern Wisconsin and it has been so cold and snowy and now cold and rainy. I'm ready to be able to plant anything outside. I love seeing your property. I love your videos!
I am now using my old cottage cheese containers to make plastic labels as I make my own yoghurt and have no containers from that. It works great , thanks for passing on that tip and I passed that on to the community harvest garden I used to belong to.
Happy belated birthday Chelsea!🎂 Th first of your videos I watched was the root cellar. I just love that little getaway that’s dug into the earth. I’m sure that’s been >4yrs ago now. Wow😮 time is flying by fast!! I can’t wait for the cookbook. Hope everyone is doing well and staying safe. Cheers, Doc ❤
My fiancé says to mention that his father used a sou-vide water bath for cheese making. It allows for exact temperature control for different states of the milk & cheeses. Not sure if that process / appliance would work well for you, but a different method to research for sure :)
I’ve had my earthenware bowls for a good 40 years. I have the full nesting set. Mine has the brown band. I remember paying next to nothing for them back in the day. They are super heavy. So sorry about Fireweed.
Happy belated birthday! I love split pea soup and have made it numerous times almost identical to your recipe. Interesting to see your seeds and greenhouse update. I would not know the first thing about making yogurt but so interesting to watch. Thanks for the video. I am glad your new dairy cows are doing well.
Split Pea soup is a winter staple here in NH. I put celery in with the onions and carrots and a smoked ham hock. Husband likes it with lots of chopped smoked ham in it too. ❤
Since you picked Honeysuckle already & it's not really a weed, I'll give you two more that aren't weeds either...I was thinking Willow & Juniper. Glad your cows are working out for you!
Hi Chelsea, Great recipes. While baking powder biscuits are not part of my culinary vernacular, I understand the sweet savoury combo with the soup and jam biscuits. I grew up with a summer dish of a light green bean soup accompanied by a plum cake made from lightly enriched yeast dough (1 egg, molten butter and a wee bit of sugar) thickly covered with the destoned raw plums (preferably very ripe or add a light sprinkling of sugar, if sour) and baked like a pizza on a round baking tray. And then tug in, soup spoon in right hand and a large wedge of cake in the left, dripping with fruit juices ... YUMMY!! Thanks for evoking this childhood memory :)
went on Amazon to find your seed block-(never heard of these before) there are so many- which one do you have- it has been put through more dirt than you can probably remember lol and has held up so well thanks
I love the Mammoth Red Rock cabbage. I'm trying the red Russian kale this year. I'm trying different tomatoes and peppers this year. And growing golden hubbard squash and Cinderella pumpkins too. I have artichokes growing, first time for growing them.
I love split pea soup also but have never tried it with carrots - must try! Your biscuits were larger than normal and therefore more good but will need to try one with soup and jam, also. Great video today, thanks.
It is very possible that I missed the info on cookbook prices. Could you direct me to where I can get them and to place an advance order. I love your site and the great example your family sets. I have to say I planted seeds this year after many years of not. My mother was an avid gardener and sold much to her customers - I think word of mouth. My young brother inherited her love as well as my sister and some myself. Shade is my problem and any dirt was devoted to tomatoes. I usually use big pots and never get tired weather it is the animals, garden, baking and cooking. Thanks for all your hard work. I also live in the north (northern Minnesota -Zone 3 I think) but our snow is slow at melting - no mud in site. This calls for patience.
Someone just gave me one of those soil block makers, thanks for showing how to use it!! We just moved, so sadly we won't be doing much gardening this year - we have way too many projects that need to get done first. We are hoping to get a few raised beds built so we can at least grow some things. So enjoy your videos - thanks!

That’s so lovely! Say hi to your son from me.💕
My father used to make split pea soup using the bone & meat from the leftover ham from Easter. Such a great food memory!
I always start making broth from a ham hock and will use the ham bits in the soup. Pea soup usually planning ahead. Broth one day and overnight in fridge. Next day skim off fat then add the ingredients. Pea soup in a couple of hours. Winter must at least twice a year to make huge pot. 😊
Yep pea soup using Easter Ham on the menu this weekend 😋
I love the greenhouse colours - suffragettes used these colours ! Purple stood for loyalty and dignity, white for purity and green for hope 💜🤍💚

Such a good looking couple and so sweet to each other. I'm so happy to see this kind of family.

I just love that you use the empty dill pickle jar to hold your milk! It cracks me up evert time. My aunt used to do it too.
How lovely for your kids that they have all those memories all gathered together! Can’t wait til they are available to us too. Thanks for your efforts!
I would love to see how you build your first greenhouse!!! ❤
I love your Videos...they are so normal.... you show us a real life😊❤and your recepies are very good😊❤
Thanks for share this with us ❤❤

Try adding some marjorum to the pea soup....provides amazing flavor....German style. We also add chopped celery and chunks of ham, or slices of smoked sausage, depending on what have.
Add a table spoon of mustard powder to your cheese scones, it's amazing.
If you run a cable along the top you can clip the fold of the foil and drape it down so you can actually walk under it.
Hi Venison for dinner who also is in Canada is fantastic at making cheese and all about her milk cows I think you would love her channel
I know Kate.😊
Venison for dinner has great videos to watch about cheese making.
Alicep...Chelsea uses garlic all the time!
Happy belated birthday, Chelsea! 🎉🎁🎂 Love the wooden utensils!

Split pea soup is one of my favorites too. I'll put a ham bone left over from a holiday dinner or I buy a small ham steak.
You can get wireless greenhouse sensors that gives a notification on your phone when temp. drop below a certain temp.! I've seen growers use them on youtube (Tuya smart brand). So then, you don't have to worry anymore. And they are very cheap.

So many new and exciting things happening! You give me hope that summer is just around the corner. (Love the name Honey btw!)

I eat savory soups this way too. I have to have something sweet with it,I
also do it with biscuits and gravy, everyone thinks I'm weird.

I have stainless steel appliances. I'm the USA we have stainless steel wipes. They are wonderful.
I can’t wait for your cookbook 🥰 I still much prefer paper cookbooks especially after watching all your fun with the antique cookbooks 😊
you should get a remote freezer temperature gauge to keep an eye on the greenhouse, I have one in my chicken coop and the reader is in my bedroom.
We don’t have cell service out here, otherwise that would be an awesome idea!
I love the snert you made, it is typical dutch❤, I always put some Sambal in my bowl, sambal is hot pepper sauce, and I slice the bacon an put som on dark rye bread, delicious!
Thank you
Can’t wait for the cookbooks. I like the idea of the spiral bound ones so they will open up flat.
Oh wow ripe tomatoes!
Pea soup looks so good . . . i add celery and turnip to mine, with a ham bone and left over pieces of ham from our Easter meal. Cornbread also goes really well with this soup. So Nice to see seeds going in the pots!!
Late Happy Birthday!
If I have a nap after lunch, I wake up 16 hours later 😳

I love your videos. I'm a bit surprise as a french people that you eat jam with this soup but why not, i would like it the one after the other. It's funny 😉😊
You could use a digital thermometer in the greenhouse that connects to your phone and have an alert set if the temp drops
Grateful for your shopping links. I just love your channel; your family's kindness and gentleness shine through.
115,000 +++ Great Job !
Thanks, friend.

I make my pea soup in my Instant pot! Never thought I'd use anything but my Dutch oven BUT it was perfect in 45 mins flat! I was sold...😊
Sadly I need something bigger. I only use my instapot for beans right now. Once my kids are grown I’m sure I’ll go back to it.
Hi I am from Australia, I add a couple bacon hocks to my pea soup, also a handful of fresh mint, or 2 teaspoons dry mint, it's delicious
Split pea is our favorite through winter and spring. I use ham bones and scraps from Christmas hams.
I'll buy the whole shebang of cookbooks :) looking forward to it!
Since you picked Honeysuckle already & it's not really a weed, I'll give you two more that aren't weeds either...I was thinking Willow & Juniper. Glad your cows are working out for you!
When I was a kid, my siblings and I used to fight over the last "funny" biscuit.

YUM!!!
Your videos are such a wealth of educational information and skills and dedication and love ❤️ I'm addicted lol
I'm so glad!
Honey fits her well !
Your celeriac root would’ve done very well in it. We make a similar soup in Netherlands
Happy belated Birthday 🇨🇦🎂
I like a little thinner soup.
Happy Birthday! I've made the soup many times for my family! So delicious!
Thank you! I adore your Vlogs! And you!! 🌺
You are so welcome!
😊 Never heat your milk with direct heat, rather heat milk in pot with water, for pasteurisation and for the actual yoghurt making.
went on Amazon to find your seed block-(never heard of these before) there are so many- which one do you have- it has been put through more dirt than you can probably remember lol and has held up so well thanks
I am so excited for the cookbook! Are you going to include canning recipes?! I am just starting out and seeing your pantry has inspired me!
Good job on your tomatoes, Chelsea!! That's so exciting! :) They look great!
Take your time…no rush
I love the Mammoth Red Rock cabbage. I'm trying the red Russian kale this year. I'm trying different tomatoes and peppers this year. And growing golden hubbard squash and Cinderella pumpkins too. I have artichokes growing, first time for growing them.
I love split pea soup with lemon too, though I usually just add the zest. Yours looks so good, I might just have to make some tomorrow :)
Will your cookbooks ship internationally? I am in australia and very excited about your cook book
Another great video thanks! Happy Belated Birthday 🎂. Your gift is so sweet and thoughtful.

You are so welcome!
I love split pea soup also but have never tried it with carrots - must try! Your biscuits were larger than normal and therefore more good but will need to try one with soup and jam, also. Great video today, thanks.
You can also do a great split pea soup in a pressure cooker only takes 15 minutes. Comes out perfect cheers. 😮

I have the whole nesting set of those exact same bowls and so badly want anotger! Absolutely love them!!
They are the best!!
I’m excited about your cookbooks! I definitely want to get the hardback version, I’m so glad you’re offering them in a printed version.
I want to try to make yogurt…. But scared too ….
Happy birthday 🎂🎉!!
That’s a beautiful wooden spoon
Don’t be scared! It’s easy and fool proof.

Good video
Love split pea soup! Sometimes I add kielbasa instead of ham. I also like adding bay leaf, or rosemary, and sometimes thyme.
Happy Belated Birthday & many more💝🇨🇦
