Cutting, Baling, and Wrapping Sudangrass | July 2019

- Saturday, July 13, we cut the sudangrass in our lower field in the southwest corner of our property. Because of the length and moisture of the grass, it was too wet to rake or even bale the next day. We ended up baling and wrapping it on Monday, July 15. We hope you enjoy this video! Thanks for watching!

You sound young and smart, like you are dealing in the real world. It gives me hope for the future when I see hard-working, smart young people like you actually doing something productive.
Well filmed/videoed . As a person born and raised on a farm many years ago now it was interesting to see how things have changed, but stayed the same !
The round bale wrapper is a very interesting machine 🤔 🙂
Nice thanks for posting!
Disc mower works on my sudan good it's a NH 617
Only problem with a discbine cutting in soft ground if you have rocks you have problems, seam to always find one that the packer didn't push down when cutting sorghum!
Enjoy watching, what size did you make them ?
Those were probably 4 x 4 1/2.
How many bales did you get to the acre and what size of bale
How much would one pay for one of these bales?
Just curious why do you wrap them up?
That was a good stand. I'm surprised lil' green men didn't land off in there and do crop circles 👽 😜
What variety 19011 bmr dwarf?
Hi what mower are you using for this field thanks
We use a 12 foot wide International 1490 haybine to cut all of our hay
@@KeithFinkFamilyFarm thanks which one you recommend small square bale or round bale to bale this sudan grass please
What type and model wrapper is that you are using?
It is a Tanco Autowrap round bale wrapper
@@KeithFinkFamilyFarm thank you.
Sorghum Sudangrass and Sudangrass how deference? Which one is high protein
Does it regrow after this cutting?
Yes. Typically we get four cuttings before frost. We plant as soon as soil temps hit 60 degrees and the crop will last to the first frost.
Keith Fink what is your yield/acre over those 4 cuttings?
@@KeithFinkFamilyFarm Is it perennial or annual?
@@locybapsi174 it is annual. We try to plant it first or second week in June. First cut is usually 4 weeks later and then we continue to harvest until frost kills it. Usually 2nd or 3rd week in October.
@@KeithFinkFamilyFarm Thank you for your quick reply! Wow, that's impressive. Four cuttings from June to October. I suppose it does remove a lot of nutrients from the soil.
Why are they wrapped in plastic?
They are wrapped to seal out oxygen in order to facilitate them fermentation process. They were baled at 65% moisture. The fermentation process preserves the crop. Basically a baled silage.
It smells like pickles or vinegar
Cattle go ape over it
Perennial ?
Sudangrass is an annual.
I just watched a other video where the sudangrass was at lease 6 feet tall or more
Yes, if you let it go it will get that tall quickly, but then the feed value begins to decline. Chopping a crop that tall for silage is workable, but that is way too tall for bales. Also, letting it get that tall before cutting will usually hamper its ability to regrow quickly.
Maybe a tedder
Based on the species that it is, you're cutting it early as it is only about half grown from the looks of it.
It will grow back an he will be able to cut it again!
Very astute observations thank you for sharing you get multiple cuttings this way typically the younger the Harvest the more nutrient-dense they are
No dry no turn
Gets up to 8 feet tall if you let it
Dustin if you plant it with corn it will get just as tall as the silage corn or taller, it will compete with the corn for sun light!
Hi,
Is this farm in Sudan
We require alfaalfa from sudan . pls contact me
