    Around here we call that cane. Alot of the big feed lots chop it like corn . Always wondered how wet it was when they did that. I remember some years when we tried to bale it. It would take 15 days or better to dry down to bale. Thanks for sharinf

      I think we could cut these fields directly with the chopper, but we'd have to wait until it was drier and we wanted to get this finished before silage. The feed quality should be a little better mowing it before its mature also. I can believe that it took that long to dry, it holds a lot of moisture!

    I'm curious Piet, what is the difference in feed value of the sorghum not headed out and headed out? Same as the corn, what is the difference in feed value between corn that has an ear and corn that does not? Also when I used to raise alfalfa for our registered Angus herd, and for sale, we liked to bale at between 14% and 17% moisture. And anything 15% and over we used dry Acetic acid on. I remember that Acetic acid could be used on silage also. Was wondering if you ever heard of it. I forget the brand name of the Acetic acid that we used.

    • @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047
      @pietvanbedaf-nddairyfarmer9047  Рік тому +1

      I would expect sorghum not headed out to have a higher feed value, but I'm not sure how much of a difference it would be. Corn without an ear, I would think would be similar to sorghum, having a good size ear on the corn adds significant value to the silage. I don't have personal experience with preservatives on hay, but I have heard differing options on its effectiveness. We typically use an innoculant on our silages, but preservatives can be used also.

    Maybe it's not precise because the Claas mower was made in meters. Getting the original measure in meters will maybe help to understand why is still losing some spots. Or recalibrating the GPS.

      might also have to do with the different crops that you mow with it. might do better in normal grass with less overlap

      Corn is preffered, but we had a wet spring and it became too late to plant corn on some fields. This is a good crop to seed into July and still get good growth.

      It grows well in dry and hot conditions, it is very drought tolerant compared to corn and grows faster than corn. The nutritional value is not great, but it makes good feed for heifers or dry cows.

      Sorghum sudangrass is mainly just used for cattle feed. I believe Sorghum can be used to make flour, beer and ethanol amoung other things.
