Maybe just a victim of its timing.. critics and audiences didn't like apocalypse stories yet, especially fresh of the heels of 9/11. I bet a re-release in theaters after the right marketing would make it a classic now
Love these reviews guys and I think I know why, here's my positive feedback: 1. You cover some obscure older films that either peak my interest as a film I remember wanting to see or I saw it as a kid in a completely different light. For example, The Keep - damn I forgot that one existed and never realized all the amazing actors who were in it. 2. The random facts about the filming process or companies or individuals involved. It branches out and then I end up wanting to do some more research on the topics. 3. Your back and forth opinions about each scene makes me think about my own opinions when I first viewed it, and how maybe they'd change if I were to re-watch the movies today. 4. The humor in your analysis - I was about crying back when I watched your review on Basket Case trilogy. As I keep watching these reviews, if I come up with some constructive criticisms I'll make sure to comment, but keep at it as these are *chef's kiss* 🤌
I have waited for this one for awhile, I LOVED Reign of Fire when I went to see it in the cinema and bought it on VHS and later DVD. A really under rated gem of a movie.
The biggest issue with this film is its explanation for how dragons manage to reproduce. My initial thought at the beginning was that the dragon accidentally released was an asexual female, able to produce eggs without the need of mating. However, that is not the case since it was male the whole time and the rest are female. That doesn't make sense due to the fact that the male dragon only fertilizes the eggs within the females, so where did he find other female dragons when he was supposedly the last one? And even if he wasn't the last one, where were the other dragons at? Did other drillers find other dragons underground? Did the male dragon dig to find them because of some ability to find them? The film never explains any of this or even hint at it.
I worked on this movie as a featured extra. Some great times. Everyone was great. Christian Bale was very poliete, but kept his distance. Gerard Butler was his usual friendly and charismatic self. Matthew McConaghey was a bit bonkers on set, so the rumpurs ring true. Alexander Siddiqui was a real gentleman. Got his autograph and had lots of chats with him. Its funny how their on screen personas are very true to life.
The reason they are called the Kentucky Irregulars is because they are not military they are a militia. The basic distinction is they wouldn't have government support/resources. They aren't professional soldiers.
I always assumed they formed formations of irrgular militias in the US when they were getting their asses whooped. I think they are a surviving irregular unit from the lost war against the dragons. They would have fought together with the army. And even got tanks and stuff. I guess in this war they started developing the tactics against dragons. This wouldn't be unusual for a country in a prolongued war they are loosing.
When this came out there were a lot of fantasy movies with dragons, but this one did something diferent in a more "realistic" setting, and a more grounded plot, indeed cool effects but the actors and performances is what sell the concept and made it entertaining.
I do want to push back a bit on the complaint about not enough dragons. In my opinion the "less is more" approach really helped in this case. Not having dragons on the screen all the time helped accentuate when they showed up. If you said, "Name me a scene from Reign of Fire" I can still name the scenes of the dragon escaping the tunnel in the beginning and the scene of the bull dragon torching the castle. Just discovered the channel. Enjoying it so far. Keep up the good work!
Reign Of Fire is slightly watchable with some interesting ideas & concepts, but the execution is shaky & storyline was dry in spots, plot holes & lacking continuity...hit & miss. Still some good visuals & acting was alright. A kind of see it once & call it a day. Remember...There's only one thing worse than the Beast...Americans...!. I love It!! Greetings from The USA!!!
Only thing I remember about Reign of Fire is that it’s the only other film I’ve seen with Natalya from GoldenEye in it. Fair play to everyone involved. Looks like they were giving it the beans. Just didn’t work out, but the ambition is likeable
Wyverns being technically not Dragons is actually a falsity. The root of the word Dragon is in Drakos which is a Greek word for serpents and seamonsters. But for Wyvern, the root is the Latin word Vipera (With Wyvern being a phonetic germanic transliteration) A more specific word relating to serpents (rather than serpentis itself). The earliest 'dragons' in mythology, are Tiamat, Bahamut, Yam, Ladon, Typhon and Python. The commonality between them all, is serpentine reptilian bodies, and sometimes avian wings. Often related to Creation myths, or beings of immense power, and often associations with Human heads and intellect. Of course, English is a weird language that adopts terms from various places, and defines them more explicitly. So while we have far more synonyms than other languages, the differences between our synonyms is that they can be far more specific in what they intend to mean. So we can classify different "kinds" of Dragons using different terms, even though fundamentally, they are all the same thing, Dragons. Great video. I love this movie myself.
The movie idea was made a bit to soon. 10-15 year later they could have done a lot more visually. Still love the movie. And Game of Thrones stole their dragon design from Reign of Fire! Not that it’s a bad thing though lol
It's movies like this, Pacific Rim, and Godzilla King of the Monsters that makes wish more more apocalyptic movies brought about by giant monsters whether they're dragon or otherwise
As a Kentuckian love a Kentucky reference even if totally fictional, to confuse anyone. They usually confuse other Americans as much as non Americans. See 2010 the year we make contact.
Yes! This movie is so underrated. The dragons still look pretty good given it was made in 2002. Love how over the top Van Zant is. This would do so well if it came out today
Really great review, you guys killed it again on a movie I've never even seen, but you guys have now made it on my radar. Can't wait for next weeks review, keep up the good work
As some one who drove through Coffeyville on many trips to Grandma's I can say that there are no wheatfields around that town. The wheatfields are further west.
Although I haven't watched this in a while, I still own the DVD. I have fond memories of this and will always associate it, for better or for worse, with the Resident Evil movie. For a movie that is 20 years old I think it holds up well. Though the number of scenes shared by Bale and Butler are minimal, I feel they had great chemistry in those moments. Scorrupco and McConaughey are unrecognisable when comparing them to roles I've seen them play. A great movie with some real nostalgic feelings. I've said this before (to other viewers) if you've come here for this movie or other fantasy films then brilliant. Look through their back catalogue, even if it's a film you haven't seen or a genre you don't like... give it a go. Their reviews are friendly, fascinating and so much fun.
I definitely remember seeing this in theaters and everyone laughing hysterically when Matthew McConaughey got eaten lol. 😆 If you want another UK based post apocalyptic movie you definitely need to see Doomsday from 2008. It mixes so many different types of genres so it's a lot of fun and full of action.
Holy shit... I'm so psyched for this right now... (Partially... because I thought I dreamed up this movie...) But mostly, cuz all my internet buds are here. SHELFERS FO LIFE BITCHEZ!!
I think the issue of not enough dragons is kind of moot. With the movies budget and year of release, if they had added a tonne of dragons, the quality of the film would have suffered and just been another thing to dislike and call out.
So when reviewing a movie you always have to consider the budget? Cause i'll be honest with you when i watch films i don't really care how much they spend on it or didn't. I can't believe you think it's not a valid criticism because of budget. Maybe they shouldn't have made the film at all then.
I personally think the gripe about there being not enough dragons is a relevant point though. I was drawn in to watch this film by it's cool poster of masses of fire-breathing dragons attacking a London backdrop. In the end, as the end credits started rolling I thought I'd being short-changed. The makers clearly didn't have the money to put their vision completely on screen.
i was actually disappointed with this film, it felt like it was going to be a call back to 80's action and fantasy with modern special effects etc but it was a bit too slow and dragged along a bit too much in the middle.
I agree, if this movie just had MORE fights with the dragons, this would have gone down as one of the best fight scenes with a hoard of dragons! I also agree with Iain, it's not the best nor the worst film with dragons in it. But still, it could have been better.
Wonder why more people don't talk about this movie. I'm not saying it's underrated I'm just surprised more people don't talk about it whether it's good or bad
One movie is good. This movie is good. Not every Idea needs 5 movies and a spin off series until they are beating a dead horse. Not everything needs to die a slow and painful Star-Wars-Death. Sometimes less is more.
I cant name a certain thing but this movie is one of the movies i really didnt enjoy...i cant say anything about it really nor did i want after i watched it
WYVERNS ARE DRAGONS. The dragons have 4 legs argument comes from dungeons and dragons. It was based on the welsh heraldry but dragons were in other cultures before that. All wyverns are dragons just as all lions are cats but not all cats are lions. The dragon is the Clade. It’s a huge misconception. Dragons have been in numerous cultures long be fore the “4 legs 2 wings” was a thing. The Greek hydra is a dragon and it doesn’t even have wings. A wyvern is a dragon with 2 legs and 2 wings. Again, a dragon is not just a fire breathing lizard with 4 legs and 2 wings. It’s an umbrella term for a group of subspecies that has appeared in various mythologies. To clarify the reproduction, it’s like any external egg reproduction. The female lays them, the male then seeds the egg. The science is actually apt in the film. So is the dragon biology. If you follow the evolution of the dragon and it’s subspecies, even wyvern is incorrect in its modern usage. Wyverns used to be creatures that resembled birds with feathers and beaks with lizard like features.
McConaughey did method acting and wanted everyone to call him by his characters name. Lmfao. He plays a meathead from America who likes to fight dragons. How much method acting is needed here?
Your terrible joke reminded me of another terrible joke Three Chinese women are sitting together discussing what they want their future husbands to be like The first girl says she wants her husband to have a dragon on his chest, The second girl said she wants her husband to have two dragons on his chest. The third girl simply says she wants her husband's to be draggon on the floor. The floor being any surface on the ground covered by a structure...while the ground is not. You guys kill me with that.
Most underated movie reviewers on UA-cam. Heres to you two legends 🍻🤘
💯
I watched this movie as a kid and then again as an adult. I NEVER understood this movies bad reviews, I thought it was briliant.
Maybe just a victim of its timing.. critics and audiences didn't like apocalypse stories yet, especially fresh of the heels of 9/11. I bet a re-release in theaters after the right marketing would make it a classic now

You’d think releasing a post-apocalyptic dragon movie starring Christian Bale and Matthew McConnaghey would gross a billion dollars.
After 20 years you still can't really tell in which scenes they didn't use real dragons.
I have waited for this one for awhile, I LOVED Reign of Fire when I went to see it in the cinema and bought it on VHS and later DVD. A really under rated gem of a movie.

Yes the first act was good, but then after 20 minutes its just eh... nothing the movie moves too fast but yet feels boring

Saw this film as a kid and I still love it. Can't say I've seen anything like it. Not with this look and feel to the world.

The poster lied which hurt
I think the montage makes mention of multiple dragon citings so probably more than one underground.

Great video. I love this movie myself.
Thank you for the historical and linguistic information-it really helps in understanding the lore of dragons and serpents.
why do the dragons eat ash? I always figured it was just catnip to them.
Maybe there are several dragons or eggs in the cave.
They HAVE parachutes.
I love this film. Your critiques are easily defendable.

The main thing I took away from this movie was that the frumpy Russian IT girl in Goldeneye was actually… a smoking hot babe.
Love the channel, but love even more that Gary knows wyverns. Aces, guys!

Underrated movie
I liked this movie and I watched it at the cinema and enjoyed it
The tech that was used to create these dragons was amazing. Those dragons they created would stand up to any we see on TV or movies in 2024!
Spooky! Was watching this when the notification went off! Classic movie.
Terrific review for a thoroughly underrated film! Top quality stuff :)

Hey lads, ya gotta review M3gan next.
A cult classic, great movie looks like Godfather compared to today's shite 😂
An excellent review for an utterly naff film. What an abuse of advertising funds. What a waste of emerging talent. And what a waste of time.
