The heartbreaking thing is that although the band did reunite 10 years later so technically its not "The Last Live", this was also the last time they played with Hide. He & Yoshiki agreed that the band was gonna reunite again in 2000 maybe after finding a new vocalist to replace Toshi (although in my eyes it is impossible). Just shortly 5 months later, he left the world suddenly by accident & it shocked the whole Japan. At that moment, Yoshiki knew that his dreams of reuniting his friends & the greatest Japanese band ever was officially over.

This is not the performance to introduce anyone to this song, but it is an incredible emotional display. I can’t get through this performance without crying.
“Endless Rain” was the ballad follow-up to “Kurenai” (as was customary back in the 80s). Story is the record label told Yoshiki the album Blue Blood needed a ballad, so he wrote “Endless Rain.” It’s another of their biggest hits. It was X Japan’s concert tradition to do this song as their first encore, so this was literally one of the last songs they were ever going to play together.
(Since I’m at that point in the video, I believe the drums are Yoshiki’s recorded track. He has some pre-records set and a drum machine for specific songs in the set.)
It was also tradition that the band drops out and lets the crowd sing along for a while, so those 30,000 voices were prepared.
20:15 Yoshiki and Toshi both founded X Japan. They were friends and bandmates since Kindergarten. Toshi deciding to leave was heartbreaking. The rest of the band to my understanding/remembrance did plan to regroup and resume, but hide passed away just 5 months later, and THAT was the final blow. (The rest of X Japan performed their ballad “Forever Love” at hide’s funeral, if you really want a gut-wrenching performance.)
When X Japan did officially reunite in 2007 it was like a miracle. And it was great until Yoshiki and Toshi fought again.

Yep, the comment above me is also correct, they played "The Last Song" after this, but this was really the final sendoff. David should watch this concert in it's entirety. Other things that were unplanned/unusual:
      -Toshi crying from the start.
-Yoshiki trashing his drum kit, which was an act, but at this show it turned into an actual meltdown, he just kept going until he broke actual drum shells and his hands were bleeding.
-hide's refusal to acknowledge Toshi during Kurenai even after Toshi draped a confetti ribbon around his shoulders.
-The hug between Yoshiki and Toshi during Forever Love's acapella section, Yoshiki actually had planned on punching Toshi but couldn't do it.
-The members laying their instruments down on the stage, one by one, and leaving the stage during The Last Song.

Hide died at age 33 on the morning of May 2, 1998. After a night out drinking, he was found hanged by a towel tied to a doorhandle in his appartment in the Minami-Azabu district of Tokyo. He had returned to Japan just five days earlier, after a three-month stay in Los Angeles. On May 1, he and the members of his band Spread Beaver recorded for television shows and went out drinking, with his younger brother driving him home in Hide's armored black Jaguar XJ at around 7:30 am. He was rushed to hospital, where he was prenounced dead at 8:52 am. Approximately 50.000 people attended his funeral at Tsukiji Hongan-ji on May 7, where 56 people were hospitilized and 197 people received medical treatment.A 19-year old girl slit her wrist after laying flowers at the temple.

@@china_is_asshole It's possible November Rain was actually inspired by Endless Rain. Endless Rain was released as a single at the time GNR would have been touring Japan and at their Japan shows many years later, they played the melody of Endless Rain as a guitar solo that led into the perofmrances of November Rain.

Only flaw in this performance is that Heath's bass was tuned WAY TOO LOW. This song was written in 1989, when Taiji (the greatest Japanese bassist ever) was still in the band. His basslines complements Yoshiki's piano so well.
If you want to see the magnificence of Taiji, check out the songs & lives of X before 1992. Songs like Silent jealousy (imo one of the best rock songs of all time), Weekend, Sadistic Desire, Rose of Pain etc. really showcased his talent, skills and coolness.
At that time, everyone in X was still happy. They moved on stage, interacted with one another, and always had a smile on their faces.
Yoshiki: Classically- trained pianist, Non-stop energy drummer & was still injury-free, Main songwriter
Hide: Lead guitarist - With one of the best stage presence I've ever seen still until this day, Amazing songwriter & guitarist, Adding progressive elements to Yoshiki's classical music during arrangement, Fashion icon.
Taiji: Bassist - Bass Genuis with frightening skills in picking, fingering, tapping & slapping. Added heavy metal elements to Yoshiki's classical music during arrangement. Fabulous basslines shining everywhere throughout the song without stealing the spotlight of other members; while having multiple jaw-dropping bass solos. Also the best classical guitarist (Yes) in the band. In the words of Paul Gilbert: He is the only bassist who is on the same level as Billy Sheehan.
Toshi: Vocalist - Still wasn't ruined by the cult yet & was still happy on stage. Got an emotional voice for the ballads, while still got the raspy voice (pre-vocal cord surgery) for the hard rock & metal songs. God I miss this Toshi.
Pata: Rhythm guitarist / Occasionally Lead guitarist - The relatively "Chill" member who wasn't as aggressive as the other 4 on stage. However he was a picking monster who was capable of picking ~800 bpm. As Hide wasn't really fond of shredding, Pata took over many of the complicated guitar parts of faster X songs. Nailed it tho. All these while being half drunk on stage 80% of the time. After Taiji departed, he lost his remaining passion & became almost completely emotioness on stage.
After Taiji left, X lost most of its agressive style & became a main-ballad band. The band also began to fall apart sadly, although still having several great songs in the brief 3 years' time. If you ask any of the older fans who have been following them from the start, they will certainly tell you that X's prime was when all 5 founding members were still together.

This sums up this band. After Taiji left it was all Yoshiki. For some reason Heath bass sound is non existent in most of the live performances. One thing for sure, his technical skills are way below Taiji's.

another ballad from the last live is ''forever love'', in that clip you can absolutely clearly see how absolutely ruined yoshiki was towards the end of the show. it's a beautiful song as well, toshi sang it after he returned in 2008, an acoustic version with pata and heath and himself on guitars and he teared up the moment he started singing it. forever love was also the song he sang at hide's funeral just 5 months after the last live.

    ENDLESS RAIN X JAPAN 🇯🇵:-
The title track is taken from the group's breakthrough album Blue Blood, and is their first ballad released as a single. The B-side is a live version of the song "X", recorded on June 10, 1989 at Hibiya Yagai Ongaku.
Yoshiki said that "Endless Rain" is the first ballad he ever wrote, previously he was only writing heavy music and thrash metal.[1] He explained that after members of Sony saw him play a composition by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky on piano while X was waiting to play at a club, they asked him to write a ballad. The resulting song was "Endless Rain".[2] Yoshiki said the song became a hit and was a shock to their fans, but they eventually came to like it and it became "X Japan's theme song."
Rolling Stone referred to the song as "November Rain, and called it X's first big chart hit.
A live performance of "Endless Rain" was included as the B-side to their 1990 single "Week End"'.
During Guns N' Roses' July 2007 Japanese concerts, Richard Fortus and Robin Finck performed part of "Endless Rain" during their guitar duets. "Endless Rain" was covered by Japanese singers Angela Aki, at one of her concerts, and Ayumi Nakamura, on her 2008 album "Voice", and by Hong Kong singer Aaron Kwok at one of his concerts. It was also used as the theme song for the movie Zipang.
In December 2020, Yoshiki performed the song at the 71st NHK Kōhaku Uta Gassen of New Year's Eve, along with Babymetal, Roger Taylor and Brian May of Queen, Sarah Brightman, SixTones, LiSA, and Milet.
    X JAPAN 🇯🇵
X Japan (Japanese: エックス・ジャパン, Hepburn: Ekkusu Japan) is a Japanese rock band from Chiba, formed in 1982 by drummer Yoshiki and lead vocalist Toshi. Starting as a predominantly power/speed metal band with heavy symphonic elements, they later gravitated towards a progressive sound with an emphasis on ballads. Besides being one of the first Japanese acts to achieve mainstream success while on an independent label, the group is widely credited as one of the pioneers of visual kei, a movement among Japanese musicians comparable to Western glam.

Originally named X (エックス, Ekkusu), they released their debut album Vanishing Vision (1988) on Yoshiki's own Extasy Records one year after finalizing their line-up including bassist Taiji, lead guitarist Hide and rhythm guitarist Pata. They achieved breakthrough success in 1989 with the release of their second and major debut album Blue Blood. Following 1991's Jealousy, Taiji left the band in early 1992. He was replaced by Heath and the group changed their name to X Japan before producing the mini album Art of Life (1993), which is composed solely of the 29-minute title track. In 1995 the group dropped most of its original visual kei aesthetics in favor of a more casual look and released Dahlia (1996), which like their two previous albums debuted at number one. X Japan performed their last concert at the Tokyo Dome on December 31, 1997, making it the last of five consecutive sold-out New Year's Eve concerts the group held at the stadium.
After ten years, X Japan reunited in 2007 and recorded the new song "I.V.". Over the next two years they performed several concerts, including their first overseas show in Hong Kong, and formally added Sugizo as lead guitarist in place of Hide, who died in 1998, before holding a North American tour in 2010. In 2011, the band went on their first world tour throughout Europe, South America and Asia. Shortly after reuniting, work began on their sixth studio album. During its ten years of production, several release dates were announced, but it remains unreleased despite Yoshiki's claim of its completion in September 2018.
X Japan has released five studio albums, six live albums, and 21 singles. In 2003, HMV Japan ranked the band at number 40 on their list of the 100 most important Japanese pop acts. In 2007, Rolling Stone Japan ranked Blue Blood number 15 on its list of the 100 Greatest Japanese Rock Albums of All Time. In 2017, Loudwire named X Japan the Best Metal Band from Japan. It has been reported that X Japan has sold over 30 million records.

The song itself is alright, a nice ballad in its own way. But what really got me, like you mentioned, was the intense emotional impact of the performance. It hit me right in the feels, man. The more I learned about the backstory and X Japan's journey, the bigger it became.
By the way, did you know that X Japan's roots go back to a KISS concert in 1977? Yoshiki and Toshi were there, and KISS blew their minds with their wild stage presence and crazy makeup. That experience sparked something in them and inspired them to create their own wild fusion of music and spectacle, Japanese-style.
So, when you watch this performance, it's not just about the song or the concert setup. It's about the profound influence that KISS had on X Japan's style, with their over-the-top stage presence and all. They hammered their emotions home in the music, and it's truly mind-blowing. All about the feels this one.
And yeah, Toshi actually called it quits due to getting involved with a weird cult. It was a tough time for X Japan, but luckily, years later, he broke free from those vampires and reunited with the band. Technically, they're still together, just a bit slow on the song output. So, while this performance marked a turning point in their epic popularity, it wasn't the end end for X Japan. They are slowly putting out songs..like one every what, year or so. lol.
No Rain, No Rainbow (BM is obviously very influenced by X)

I wish you can check out the 30 minute (or almost) from X-Japan called Art of Life because to me, that song encapsulates everything X-Japan is in a single song - fast drumming, riffage, guitar solos, poetic lyrics piano solo and endurance. Yes, endurance.

If anyone likes reading, an English translation of Toshi's book describing what he went through is available online. After I finished reading it the first time, I almost immediately read it again. I suspect some people won't really understand how it happens, how getting brainwashed into a cult happens, because they constantly think "oh you can just leave". "just don't be abused" etc. But it's very real, and I believe I understand deeply how he felt now. It was very unclear what really happened back when I first learned of the band decades ago, and I'm glad I was finally able to learn the truth.
And I think it's very valuable for understanding people in general, and maybe even identifying when you or someone you know is being harmed by others. Unfortunately, nice people let other people hurt them over and over again. It can take your whole life away.

This is why I was thrilled you would be doing this song. The song is secondary and it is the circumstances that drives this experience. While I may disagree with your scores, you nailed this reaction perfectly, the hell with the score that is not what this is about. You experienced as us X-Japan fans did the demise of a great band when they had everything going for them and easily could of continued to dominate. The reason for it is tragic but what happened after this makes this so gut wrenching. Hide's death makes this the absolute end of X-Japan and no matter how it is reorganized it is not the same. I figured as a musicians and a lover of the music art form this would be wrenching for you even though it was called a ballad.....it is not a ballad but a funeral cry with the crowd begging after the stage emptied to please come back, the helpless cries of a lover who has lost the light of their life and just watch it walk away knowing it will never come back. Great reaction David, you never disappoint, even when you are wrong, and this is why your channel is simply one of the best music sites for any true music lover to experience.....THANK YOU, I know how hard this was for you and appreciate you doing it!!!!!!

I love the song, but I think everything you said was fair... In fact, after you said you didn't like ballads, I expected a lower score lol... But yeah, even if you don't like the song, it's hard not to get emotional from the performance, even without knowing the context... you can kinda feel what is going on, just by watching it...
This said, I don't know if this is common for other bands, because other performers I've seen haven't dragged it out so long, but when I saw X live, I think it was 2017 in London... I think it was meant to be 2016, but the concert got postponed a year... But yeah, the crowd was pretty nuts even then... There was like a 30 to 45 minute gap at one point... I'm not sure if it was a break or it was for the encore, but people were chanting and clapping and such for all that time until they came back... Sadly I couldn't wait for the next after that because I wasn't expecting the show to go so late and I needed to get a train and work the next day... Bad planning on my part, I wish I could have stayed for the next encore... But yeah, the X crowd was nuts even here, so I bet in Japan, at the height of their fame then, it's hard to be sure how much is just their normal crowd and how much is the events around the show... I haven't seen many really big acts, so maybe this wasn't so unusual, but it still seemed amazing at the time... I don't think the place was totally full... Maybe 3 quarters to 4 fifths... But I swear that the energy could have filled it maybe twice over... It was kinda exhausting, but in a good way lol.

Despite not being the very last song it was one of the last songs and the crowd may have thought it was the last song so the emotion comes through. Its one of the saddest performances recorded that's for sure. Even worse was because Hide passed away meaning it was 100% their last time playing together. I still like the song because the melody in it allows the crowd to sing along plus it does have an emotional sound to it. I've seen Yoshiki play it during one of his piano concerts in the US and the crowd began to sing the words just like they did here and yes it was tear up time again.

It may not be the most beautiful ballad, but I think that's secondary. Everyone wanted you to watch it, because of the emotions surrounding this performance. As always, you got the point right. It's not even about this one performance, it's about the whole history of the band and its individual members. The performance was touching, true, but for me the most touching was watching fans from all over the world expressing what X-Japan means to them . People cried in interviews and said that X-Japan kept them alive, that they didn't commit suicide because they found a band that understood how they feel. A band that sings about how they feel. And that they can fully identify with them. Thank you for a great review!

Feels. And yes, it's the story that hits. Though, those chorus lyrics, let me forget all of the pain, all of the sadness. And Toshi trying to sell that while the members are pleading voiceless to not forget. Listen to the crowd. Don't do this.
    This performance hurts...
    I can't even fathom it.
I'd never throw that away. Having an audience that big singing their guts out YOUR song... God...
I was crying before the song started, this one is an experience not so much a "wow great song".

The crowd is so loud, the mics are peaking... I still remember, to this day, crying when Hide passed away. Sigh... I hope someone will request a good live version of Without You....

you need to get the hold concert(i downloaded year ago) and watch it whole. That last part was so sad and the crowd keep on singing and they don't want it to end. Plus it is in high quality audio and hd too.

19:24 Further context regarding Toshi is that there was some mismanagement with the group business by Toshi's family that he felt guilty about. Those cults (his wife and the cult master) exploit that guilt and manipulate Toshi. He was exploited so bad that after his money ran out, those cults suggested to Toshi for x japan reunion so they could continue to get money from Toshi. It eventually backfired when Toshi finally realized the cult's true nature after he was able to enlarge his cycle of friend

"The Last Song", and not "Endless Rain", was actually the last song performed at "The Last Live" (and for the first time, as a farewell; it was then also played by just Toshi-vocals and Yoshiki-piano in the opening of X Japan's reunion concert at Tokyo Dome in 2008, and then also in 2009): ua-cam.com/video/dULkeSDb6FI/v-deo.htmlsi=pBjo3i7EHVXdk5RQ
Also please react to either "Dahlia" (from either 1996 Dahlia Tour Final or from 2009 Tokyo Dome - with violin intro) or to "Blue Blood" from Countdown Gig 2008 and let me know if you find Toshi's voice as great as always in those recent years. Thank you.

You're dead on with what happened here. Yoshiki was drawing it out because he didn't want it to be over, and when he stopped and started playing again, that was unplanned.

Listen to "The Last Song"....or any other songs by them. Toshi wanted to leave and join a cult - he never wanted to do this gig but hide talked him into it. He felt that the audience of thousands were his enemy. The band members were barely talking to him. He started to preach part way through the gig , but Yoshiki stopped him. Everyone was crying including the band. I believe "the Last Song" was the last song. Yoshiki was last to leave the stage like the captain of a ship. Watch the documentary "We are X" People shouted at Toshi in the street especially after hide died.

The stage design of this concert is also very interesting. At the beginning, the five band members walked slowly from the five corners to the middle of the stage, which symbolized their meeting. But they went their separate ways at the end.
