  • Ford T18 Complete Rebuild!
    When doing the 4 speed swap for my Willys Jeep I realized there was not much information for rebuilding the ford t18 transmission. These are excellent, heavy duty transmissions used for years in several vehicles. Jeep and International Scout had their variations but parts typically do not interchange well between any of the 3. This is a pretty straightforward rebuild and should be an easy weekend project!

    Awesome video! These videos are not easy to produce. It takes a ton of time and effort before, during and after the actual rebuild to do them right. I (we) appreciate the effort!! These tutorials give backyard mechanics (like me) the confidence to tackle the big jobs and save A TON of money. Thank you again and keep them coming!

      @@SevenBarSalvagehey man I have an issue with 2nd gear after rebuilding my t18. Is it possible to put the synchro in wrong? It won’t go into 2nd gear from a dead stop but will go into all other gears and I can’t down gear into it but if I match road speed with gear speed I can get it into gear.

    Great video. I know your from the South because i can understand you and there were dirt dobber nests on the front case.

    Good thing you paid attention to that washer that sits against the front bearing on the input shaft. That raised part is critical. If it's put on backwards, it seals that front bearing instead of allowing oil in. In a short time, the washer will actually end up basically either friction welding itself to the front bearing or just melting apart, sending metal through your transmission. (That's how my T90 was destroyed by the guy that parked it 30 years ago. Same kind of front bearing setup.)
    Good video, very helpful for if/when I decide the T90 3 speed is too limited for modern roads.

    Great video! Good job! Helped me tackle my Jeep Commando’s 3-speed T15 (which I could not find a UA-cam video on). Those snap rings are a bastard trying to put back on even with a good pair of USA-made SK snap ring pliers I bought specifically for this project.

    That bearing 3" seperator don't fit exactly right on the bearing--is too small, but appears to work. It will scar the bearing, but I suppose it's getting replaced so no big deal. 6" would be better, then just put bolts to pull away from the transmission (no need for the fork, etc).

    Not sure if its applicable here but i think the dark coloration of the brass (copper and zinc) or bronze (copper and tin) synchronizers is caused by the slightly corrosive higher sulphur content api gl4 and especially gl5 multi-viscosity gear lubricants… it’s the extreme pressure additives in em what have the sulphur. i’ve heard tales of that ‘dark coloration’ being a thin layer of copper sulfide or ‘metal soap’ being eaten away with every shift and wearing synchros out. some folks say the copper sulfide in crystalline form is abrasive and will wear out metal components. Could be wrong tho… maybe it’s just cause its forty or fifty years old!

    I echo all the other comments here...fantastic video. Great cadence, camera work, and explaining things. I just installed the shifter back into a T18 in a 70 F250. I'm restoring it for my uncle, I've never driven the truck.
    The shifter has a pretty long throw up to first, but going into second is a shorter throw. Then a very short throw to go up into third and down into fourth, and then a longer throw to go up into Reverse.
    It feels like it almost barely has to move to go up into third and then down into 4th. Just wondering if this is normal.
    Second question, there is a lot of side to side play on the shifter in any gear. Not like how you can move it completely side to side like it is in neutral though. Is that normal for this transmission too?

    • @SevenBarSalvage
      @SevenBarSalvage  5 місяців тому

      Really appreciate it! Sounds like something in the shift tower or shift lever could be worn out. I’ve rebuilt other transmission towers it’s not too bad of a job. Sorry I don’t have more input!

    I’m rebuilding a t19 basically doing the same thing you are in the video…. I took my shaft out first and second gears all came off but when I get to the third gear it has a c clip ring inside the 3rd gear and stops it from expanding also my transmissions reverse gear I don’t know if I can pull it off backwards safely? And ideas?

    the purple power liquid soak, won't it cause rust , especially on the inside of the case? also how do you dispose of the used purple liquid ?
    thanks

    • @SevenBarSalvage
      @SevenBarSalvage  21 день тому +1

      As far as rusting I wipe down the gasket surfaces with grease after it’s clean and the inside a little PB blaster or wd40 to keep it from flash rusting until I fill it with oil. I use the purple power to the point it’s more oil than degreaser and just take it to the recycling center, they’ve never complained haha
