- In 1978, Mark A. Smith, known as the Grandfather of Jeeping, led a group of five CJ-7s on an epic, 21,500-mile journey across two continents, Expedicion de las Americas.
Rick Péwé joins Adventure Architects’ Chris Collard, this Jeep’s new owner, to discuss the history of this unique Jeep and pay tribute to the adventurous souls that tackled the Darien Gap. They also discuss Chris’ plans for an upcoming conservation project on this one-of-a-kind CJ-7. Stay tuned to Gone-GPN for this upcoming tech series.

I remember this story from back in the day. I had me a 1976 orange CJ 7 a few years back Detroit locker, 258, TH 400, drum brakes, no ps. and junk Quadratrack. Super clean body and paint. Great old story! Restoring a 1980 W 150 now but not the dark green paint.
This is a dream vacation
It would be interesting to see some new Jeeps trying that.

I’m always amazed at people’s incorrect opinions about Jeeps leaking fluids…mine is a ‘99 TJ with 340k miles and it never leaves any stains.

I tried to buy that Jeep from AL Grim when he was in Hemet. He said he was giving it to his son. Also, he was not going to repair the hood dent.
Hey Jpetton, just getting to these comments. Do you recall if it was stored inside our out behind a shop? Covered? or? I'd asked Shane what happend to the original hoop bumper and rear rack (said he didn't know) and figure they were tossed or laying in a pile somewhere. Sorry you didn't get it, but really glad I did:) C-
@@adventurearchitects7242 Hi Chris, Al had 2 commercial buildings. The south bldg had 3 units and it was parked inside in the middle unit. I don't recall any racks on the Jeep and of all the things we moved around in the shop I did not see any additional Jeep parts. Enjoy, I just picked up a 2012 JKU with half doors.

Freaking cool! Your plan(s) for the CJ sound spot on to me. It's a Jeep thing, I understand I have a '75 CJ 5. Look forward to watching you make it happen.
There were actually six vehicles, One of them was a Wagoneer for a support vehicle, and 14 men.
I am wondering why the holes for the factory rollbar are missing, so I am sure that the CJ was made in late 79 or early 1980.
How could this Jeep had been driven in 78/79?
