    Journalist here, 35 years experience. I recorded numerous phone interviews in the early 90s. Here is the tech we used, and most likely what Grant used.
    A good quality answering machine could record phone calls. (Illegally, without the other party’s consent if you chose to do it that way. There was no audible beep to alert the other person that they were being recorded.)
    Answering machines used either full size cassette tapes or micro cassettes- depending on the make/model of the machine. The recordings sounded very good, broadcast quality. For example, I used interviews I recorded with musical artists on my radio show all the time, they sounded fine for broadcast purposes.
    Tom Grant most likely had such a machine both at his office and his home - since that is where the majority of his conversations were recorded.
    There was also an apparatus which you could attach to the handset 📞 of a landline phone to record calls when you’re traveling away from home or the office - news reporters often used this gadget for covering news stories in the field. Tom may well have used one of these gadgets also when he was in Seattle, and needed to record calls on his primitive cell phone, hotel room phone, or a pay phone.

    So In the 90s they made home phones with a mini cassette recorder, speaker phone etc. The same size tapes you use in a handheld recorder of the time. I always assume thats what Tom had in his office. This is how he taped all his coversations with courtney, rosemary. And whoever else. These types of phones were common in the 90s. I had one in my home. The tapes were mainly used to hold messages from your answering machine. However , you could also use them to tape phone calls on some models. This may not be how he did it. That's just what I think.

  • @RealLoriSpencer

    I seriously doubt Tom had the ability to “tap” anyone’s phone. He was just a PI, not law enforcement.
    Wiretaps require a court order from a judge, and are usually requested by law enforcement. There would be a paper trail at the courthouse documenting the request, and court order, if one was granted.

  • @benwaters4659

    Tom has stated that several celebrities have come to him with information but because they want to be anonymous, he won't release any of that information. He always says he knows more but never elaborates; he's essentially covering up a crime. Would his tapes be admissible in court as they are illegally recorded. He's never released the full unedited chronological tapes, why? Theres a major superiority complex in him.

      I agree, the best thing he can do is release more info if he has any. He claims he waiting for the case to be reopened by the police. Maybe he has something else maybe not but there's also eyewitnesses who sat on it for 30 years who are worse in my eyes.

  • @TheLoneMutant
    @TheLoneMutant 2 місяці тому +5

    So let me get this straight. Matt thinks Tom had a relationship with Courtney long before she allegedly called Tom to have him look for Kurt? Maybe I'm tone deaf, but I didn't hear any "chummy" vibes in those early conversations prior to finding Kurt's body. That didn't come across to me until after Kurt was dead and Courtney was sending Tom on wild goose chases to keep everyone off her trail. But at that point, it's kind of expected when you're trying to get all the info you can out of someone you think is setting you up. You would want to be as friendly and "chummy" as possible so as to not let them on you're onto their shenannigans. Now that I think of it, in some strange and bizarre way, Tom's part in this case comes across like Roman Polanski's 1974 hit movie 'Chinatown' with Jack Nicholson playing Jake Gitts, the private investigator who gets taken for a wild ride to cover up a scandal.
    What do you ladies think? Did either of you get the vibe Tom possibly knew Courtney long before April 3, 1994?

    • @DVS1NYC
      @DVS1NYC 2 місяці тому +6

      Its clear that Grants not on team Courtney. He made mistakes investigating and was a jerk to people. He fell off his high horse in a sense, and acted as a gatekeeper. People felt they can go to him and accomplish something, but get nowhere. I've heard him say he wanted people to take over. He should be more cooperative by this point and pass the torch. I've followed this since I first heard the news, if there is legit evidence, the personal vendettas need to go.

    Thanks for your great contributions to this case. Is there a chance to ask Matthew about the phone number Kurt left for Courtney after leaving the rehab? I am talking about the mysterious Elizabeth, maybe Elizabeth Peyton? It wasn't really discussed much and Mr Grant said he knows who she is, but will not talk about it unless this case gets reopened. So anyone has an idea, why Kurt left her phone number for Courtney as a possibility to follow or contact him, any idea who this Elizabeth is and if Kurt stayed in her apartment or house for a short time until he flew back from Los Angeles to Seattle?

    Id really like to hear more about what new evidence he uncovered, such as witnesses, suspects.
    Grants not sherlock holmes by any means, but theres no doubt he did a lot for the case with those recordings in that 3-5 day period where he was just suspicious of Courtney and had no idea about Kurt. Otherwise its a lot of armchair QBing.
    I agree that Grant and Carroll seem more familiar with eachother than investigator/witness. My theory is Rosemary already knew Grant through her law practice possibly and she could have recommended him to Courtney. He and Carroll in a sense then turned on Courtney because Grant said he has more recordings of her being suspicious of Courtney. They could be hiding this relationship, but I dont get any sense he was actually colluding with Courtney to murder Kurt.

Even when Courtney was telling him EXACTLY where to find them? Why had he never tried to employ actual legal counsel and go about things the correct way? Why has he never pursued the Forensics in this case? When we gave him the autopsy he never even attempted to get it authenticated or reviewed. He just went straight to posting it to his website so that people could provide him for it. We have absolutely no context as to why certain things are being said in those calls and the rosemary Carrol recording is extremely important but it has also caused her to completely shut down and never speak about Kurt's death again afterwards. Over the years Tom had charged countless unsuspecting fans hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars for phone calls all while refusing to actually answer any of their questions. He has attempted to discredit anyone that has ever tried to get close to this case over the years. He places demands on others all while being allowed to claim that he has all of this groundbreaking evidence but refuses to provide any of it or even prove that he has it. There isn't a single person that has ever heard those recordings in their entirety. Tom isn't the first person that brought attention to Kurt possibly being murdered either. That was Richard Lee, who Tom also has adamantly called names and tried to discredit for the past 30 years. Tom has actually done very little outside of those phone calls. Why did he never record Courtney in person? Why isn't Lanagan on any of the recordings with Dylan? Why does Tom flat out REFUSE to talk about anything outside of his outdated narrative?

      They have. But they need more. Much more. They have to make an airtight case so the SPD will re-open the case. So far they've proven the last four lines of the letter are not Kurt's. Kurt had evidence in his throat of an overdose. There were other drugs in his system which was also found in his root beer can, beside heroin. And an examiner confirmed Kurt was dead before he was shot. But they ran into a road block there. The examiner wouldn't sign off on it because they didn't know where the drug testing sample was taken from on Kurt's body. And the Seattle examiner's office cannot give Michelle and Lisa what the examiner needs because of privacy laws. Only Courtney or Frances could sign off on it, and they, for very obvious reasons, would never do that. Right now, they're working with a firearms expert to see if Kurt could've shot himself. If they can prove that it was impossible, then that may very well be all it takes for the SPD to re-open the case.
