  • In this lecture Michael explains how to successfully propagate trees from cuttings. Most broadleaf evergreens as well as junipers are very easy to propagate using cuttings. Hardwood cuttings can be planted in fall, softwood cuttings in late spring or summer. Make sure to check the tree species guides on Bonsai Empire for specific information. Place the successfully rooted cuttings in separate pots after about a year, and again a year later, possibly cutting the tap root to strengthen surface roots. We'll discuss these techniques in the upcoming lectures as well. This video is a free preview lecture from our Developing Bonsai from Seed course.
About the "Developing Bonsai from Seed course"
Learn how to develop a Bonsai from scratch - from seeds, cuttings or air layers. We explain the developmental stages all the way from Propagation to Nebari, Trunk, and Branch development. Your teachers are Bjorn Bjorholm and Michael Hagedorn.

i started using perlite and coco coir substrate for cuttings. nice drainage and moisture retention, very inexpensive to order online because the material is light.

I know you posted along time ago but what kind of mix did you use 50/50?

usually im scooping out at least two cups coco to one cup of perlite. i like the coco to be way over 50%. 70/30 is probably my average.

Your list of tools on website is a little wild lol. If you count the tools, misc recommend tools, and Dremel tools there are 50 listed. And your 8" sheers are 20 bucks. Of all the videos I've seen of say, people from Japan maintaining these trees it's like night and day compared to the amount of tools "needed" or even recommended.

Haha there's a LOT of tools available indeed. But if you're starting out I think you need two; a good twig-shears and a concave cutter. That's it!

Please explain why you didn't leave the cuttings in water until they grew roots before placing them in substrate where you have no visual evidence of roots sprouting and just HOPE that the cutting survives

Any tree can be made into a Bonsai. Bonsai is a specialist growing technique to make extremely small trees. Hope this helps.

Nice video, but at times your voice started at one level and would drop down in volume. It went from nice tone and just dropped almost to a mumble

I've listened to a lot of podcasts with Michael, its just they way he talks, you couldn't edit that out, and I doubt at this atage of his life he will be able to change✌
