I also got into bonsai during lockdown, Herons bonsai helped me stay sane during it. So thank you Peter
He's so good!
What a strange coincidence and pleasant surprice! I've been practising boxing at Neto's gym for around one and a half years and watching Herons Bonsai videos for maybe three or four 😂
My worlds are colliding!
If I were younger I would do martial arts too.
When two worlds collide!! 👍
In my opinion this is one of the best bonsai channels out there. I like his pragmatic approach. He explains everything very easy to understand, he doesn´t tell you to get tons of expensive tools, no spechial soils that are hard to get and so on. Just simple advise that wil get you to your goal.
I´m just getting into bonsai and his videos are very helpful.
Jiujitsu practioner here. I love this video and I feel jiujitsu and bonsai have similar lessons that teach patience that if you persist something beautiful will happen
Bonsai is the beast teacher in life. If you're willing to learn.
The Karate Kid movie is how I also got into bonsai ❤
Itoigawa is an expensive tree to own. Would be nice to see rooted cuttings on your website, for us poorer people, i bought a kishu cutting from you 4 years ago, payed 17£, its now a small tree i grew on in a large pot. Thanks peter.
Thanks Peter, changed my outlook on life for the next 5+ years with your videos and passion.
Waited for a video like this, I watched an older one and was swas successful with Juniper Chineses Pyramidalis
Rhizopon is available to the general public here in the USA. He is using the % 0.3 concentrated form for the new cuttings. Rhizopon is available in 3 different percentages --- % 0.1, % 0.3 and % 0.8 for the most difficult cuttings.
Exactly what i needed to know now 😅 thank you again! 👍👍
And thanks for 8:46 😊
We have a Coast Redwood in our yard with some new growth at the base. I’m prepping to do some cuttings from them now for the express purpose of bonsai. I’m nervous and excited but am pretty sure they will do great!
Nice video, I have started rooting my maples, everything here at nurserys are grafted so great to get a pure tree, just started air layering some maples and elm, hope I get the same success. Thanks again Peter for your videos, they will be ageless.
Nice one Pete.
Thank you Sir for sharing your tips!
You always make it look so easy. Thank you.
Thank you very much once again.
Mini tanuki... Let's try and make that one 🤔, thx for sharing Peter 👍
Can not wait to try.
Yes🥰 „ ...you only think : tree!“ 😂 mr. Miagi 👍🏻🤓
A joy to learn this! 🎉
Hello Peter, I got infected with the Bonsai Virus in the mid 80' s by the Karate Kid Movi part one. What a pitty, no tree from the old days has survived, but if you are 14 Years old, daily care is not so easy ;-) Thank you for your Videos!!!!
I have been infected by the Bonsai virus since 1967 !
keep up the great work, thank you!
awesome cheers
And at what point do you switch them into larger pots? Thank you for your time and effort providing us with all these informations for free!
I am doing the same thing as we speak! I am just about to collect cuttings from magnolia, redwood and bald cypress from the city parks around me. I was wondering on the success rate you get with a seeding try that is full? So a tray of 100 cuttings how many (rough estimate) will root? And is it different between deciduious and conifers? Thanks for the video!
Great luck! 👍
Really depends on the environment you're able to keep them in and the species and the time of year
Thank you 😊
He's my Bob Ross
Thank you Sir Peter!
I've been taking cuttings from everything I can find during my travels, and my neighborhood walks this past year. Lol
I just want to see what I can propagate without waiting on seeds... Cause I suck at growing from seed.
Also, Bcause I don't know how to identify large trees when I'm out and about, which makes it difficult to order from a nursery.
How much water must these cuttings get ?
I would give anything to have one of your trees but I live in the United States and I don't think you could ship them to me like I said Mr. I would love to have one of your trees so bad you're very beautiful your work is superb I wished I could come and stay there for a couple days and hang out with you if I live there and I work for you I would probably never get a paycheck it would be I want this one and I want that tree LOL keep up to work in a videos I enjoyed them😂
You can come for a holiday here
Thank you mr Peter I would love to come there and definitely help around your nursery for a couple of days I would work just just for the knowledge that I could learn from you
In an earlier video you showed mixing moss with the soil to improve rootgrowth. 75% of my Ficus cuttings survived and rooted perfectly. I was amazed by the amount of roots on some cuttings. I started with 2 ficusses now having 12. Although propagating ficus went very well, propagating juniper got me zero result. This year I'll try again, maybe I need more moss in the soil for juniper.
👍 great "luck" 🤞
I have had decent luck with using perlite as a rooting medium. I leave the flower pot in a tray with a bit of water in it as it's pretty hot here.
You can try a mix of coco coir + sharp sand. It has worked for me very well
In Western Australia it is coming on to winter. I guess, wait till our spring for this task?
🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹🌹 thanks Peter
Peter is this realy you ,
I’ve tried to root the cuttings from my peach tree but no luck yet. Peter makes it look so easy
Peach is difficult.
@@peterchan3100 yes it is. hopefully Pygmy barberry and cotoneaster are easier to root
👍👌👌🙂🙂
Thank you Peter, do you water the cuttings? And how often if I may ask. Greetings Ashwin
I was always told that you should wet soil that you are putting cuttings in. To keep shock from happening.👍✌️
Hi Peter
Have you ever managed to root a White Pine cutting ?
I have yes, you need to use a sandy loam and some good rooting hormones, can take up to 3 months
I never had success with pines - almost impossible.
🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲🌲
Hello from Vancouver, Canada, Peter. I read that the gel out of aloe ver leaves is a good rooting hormone. Comments, please?
I haven't heard that one - but give it a try . Why dont you do a controlled experiment comparing it with hormone rooting agent and no agent at all.
Do the small cuttings need to be out of an area that would revive high wind? Preferably leave the cuttings in the green house?
You didn't talk about whether to put the cuttings in the shade or sun, or anything about watering of them?
Maybe you'd do one on Japanese maple cuttings.
In the shade- I keep ours in the greenhouse.
Hello Peter, I've been trying to find those deep trays for years and not been successful. Could you give a link to where they can be purchased? I'd be really grateful, thanks.
If u were in germany i would give some to you. I have a lot of deep trays. I get them from a gardencentre near by
Thanks for the offer Frank. I'm in the UK. I believe the deep trays are actually only available to commercial growers in the UK but I will just carry on looking.👍
How often do the currings need to be watered Peter?
Enough to keep the compost moist but not soaking wet.
How often do you water the cuttings? I am new to bonsai and have had 3 trays of cuttings die.
Just make sure the soil is moist and keep the atmosphere humid. Cover with a plastic bag or keep in a greenhouse like I do.
Can we turn a lemon Cypress into a bonsai??
Are there certain plants that do NOT propagate easily from cuttings? Japanese maples? Oak tree? Cherry?
I got a branch of my forsythia that was still attached to the parent plant and berried it in soil. It grew roots and I cut it from the parent plant. What type of cutting is this?
Ground layering! When you bring the soil up to the branch it’s an air layering, when you bring the branch to the ground it’s a ground layering :)
Good to know, thanks for answering!
I have been trying to save the apple trees planted from the bear dung often close or a few km from farm areas of bears feeding off apple orchards or harloom trees planted by the early pioneer farms, that have been often cross pollinated, or might exist a hard to find harloom variety, there probably all variants, but I add as record the previous farm family last name to the word bear, thus won-bear, or Oko-bear. at times I can rescue apple trees planted from seed and they grow very slow, But I have a hard time producing apple trees from cuttings, and even the early root stocks I want to graft them on to. I am guessing my problem is maintaining moisture and temperature, and keeping the cutting shaded. perhaps not using loose enough compost soils that will hold water and temperature. maybe issues with fungi or bacteria. My only result was using branches as thick as my finger, thus thicker than a standard pencil, that seemed to have thicker vigerious bark. and pre opening the soil with a wider opening, so that the rooting hormone does not scrape off inserting in the soil. and I watered with willow bark water. but I guess when we have a hobby we need a serious space like a table made for the project, that is near our everyday path so we can monitor every day?
it's not a thuja?
I have tried making cuttings and using the rooting powder, but, I have yet been successful to get something to root. They simply end of either rotting or drying up and dying. iti's very fustrating when I watch Peter, and cant even get close to something success as he does.
Some species take easily like Maples and Junipers - others like Pines will never root. Look up my book Bonsai Masterclass - there is a list of what strikes easily
Has anybody had success rooting Arakawa or nishiki gawa maples from cuttings?
I’ve read that the Arakawa is either difficult to grow from cutting or has a shortened life span, around 7 years. (Can’t remember which one and could be related to the growers climate ) if you enjoy this cultivar, check out Hubbles Super Cork, a more resilient Japanese maple cork bark, grown from a Ara kawa seed, by the owner of Metro Maples in Mansfield, Texas USA. I wish you the best luck
@@davidbustillos7351 thanks for the information mate! It’s a big help, all the best to you
My cuttings always dry out. Lol
I'm from South Africa. Not sure what im doing wrong. Too much direct sunlight perhaps?
Cover it with a large plastic bag and keep in partial shade.
@peter chan Thank you, Mr Chan. Im thrilled that you've personally taken the time to respond.😊 My kids (3 girls, 12, 9 and 3) always watch your YT videos ▶️. We are mesmerized by your work 🌲 and I appreciate the fact that you always share information that makes bonsai accessible to the masses .Im going try the plastic bag method. Wish me luck! 🌳
