A friend of mine's little sister really likes drawing, so I bought her the first mastering manga book and every so often I get texts from my friend showing off her little sisters drawings 💖
You could always turn the "milky way" highlight into a custom brush and just stamp it over and over again for every face if you're drawing your manga digitally or edit it digitally.
Ishika Shanai Yeah, but that only works if the characters are all looking at the same exact light source. The highlights have to point in the direction of the light and roughly match its shape.
Hey Mark I have noticed that there is a huge lack of how to draw videos about the topics "interaction hair-wind"; "interaction fabric-wind" and actually every interaction with wind. I'd love to watch a how to draw video about hair in the wind especially from you! Have a nice day:)
Hi there, Mark, I'd just like to say thank you for all of your videos. I realized my passion for drawing, because of you. I quit drawing a few months ago. Believing I was never good enough and told I was not good enough, I gave up. But I just started watching your videos recently, and the flame for drawing reignited in me because of you. So, thank you Mark Criley.
That's the power of highlights my friend! In manga and anime, characters who are to be portrayed as dead or just soulless dont have highlights which is a trick you can also use to your advantage.
I personally like the ice cream cone highlight. Starting in the pupil from a single point stretching out to the iris, where it culminates into a large dollop of ice cream highlight. When I draw a super massive highlight, I prefer to add some reflections windows or trees depending on the location of the character.
A very tricky, yet very rewarding if pulled off, is what many used to refer to as "Gainax Eyes" where you take the bullseye highlight, and then circle any number of ring highlights around it. If done right, they give a really striking effect to the character.
The highlights are the best part, all the better to make those eyes pretty! ♥ I sometimes like to make a semi-transparent, but brightly-colored highlight shaped like a heart, or a star!
Perfect timing Crilley sensei - I've just gotten back into drawing manga. Now to just find my copies of Mastering Manga 1 and 2 and I'll be unstoppable!
For the highlights I use, it depends on the lighting. I try to imitate it. But I agree with you that changing the highlights does change the type of look you get from the character... Especially the center highlight (that looks bored or unamused) and the star highlight that almost look lovey dovey...
"Less is more" Yeah, you say that now, but I've seen the first two Miki Falls books! We see you Crilley. WE. SEE. YOU. I lean towards v1 or v2 depending on the character and whether I've drawn them with pupils or not.
To me, the highlights are best for expressing emotion. The first set of eyes looks like someone who is emotionally void and giving a minimal amount of focus (like she's listening to a teacher give a lecture) where as the third set of eyes is much more focused and engaged (she knows what she is doing) the second set is full of emotion, though it's not clear which emotion (is she about to cry or is she feeling hopeful?) and the last set is dreamy yet empowered.
yo it'so cool to see tht non of this r the same to realistically drawing but when mixed yo makes u feel unstoppable! also i feel like Detroit had a bit of the 3rd one
I like my characters do look muted so I rarely use highlights. However I love the milkyway approach, the pupil highlight, and you might want to look at the eyes done in detective conan! theyre amazing.
at the beginning you sounded like a teacher and that reminded me that my art teacher has one of your books. actually you always sound like a teacher and yes i mean it as a complement
"GouaaaaaAAAaaache" Haha, that made me laugh. Nice video! P.S. I'd love to see a video teaching how to draw Violet Evergarden sometime in the future. Just a suggestion :)
You guys could search up a bunch of pics from different angles of whoever, and do it yourself.. Self taught helps development of originality to the work but if you looking to improve than learning for others is one thee best routes
Christmas is coming, I have a new job, and there are still Mark Crilley books that I do not yet own and need in order to round out my collection. I know what must be done.
Hey Mark, I was wondering if you could tell us if it's worth attempting to break into the manga industry in America with homegrown content? Many different outlets claim that because the manga or even manga inspired web comics are made by Americans, it isn't "real" manga and have almost a disdain towards new author's content. Going on to say that most consumers tend to avoid any type of original series when deciding to purchase a manga... Sad to say, this coincides with my own observations at conventions. I ask because I have written a manuscript for an 80 chapter long story, my artwork isn't on a professional level, and would like to know if I should just turn it into a light novel for the sake of actually finding an audience. As a side note, could you also include information on any publishers and/or agents you've had a good experience with? With all the vanity publishers and other content thieves out there, it's quite jarring to try and find anyone willing to actually help make the dream a reality. Many thanks, Chris
So, I know you have videos on drawing eyes (I have watched all of them!). However, I would love to see a step by step video inking eyes in the way you did in this video. I feel like this cross hatching style is not something you’ve shown in your other eye videos! Or just pen techniques video. I love all the details you do, but I feel like you rarely go into how to do said details in inking.
Mark, do you ever see a story where the pattern of highlights reflect the actual surroundings, as the scenes change? Like in a dim room, there's very small highlights, while on a brightly lit street at night, there might be many large ones? Or during a sunny day there's one huge one if the sun is in front of the face?
These shoujo eyes always look like 'do tons of scratches here and here and here, until you're done'. I think the third one is the closest to what I make, though I tend to not do shoujo eyes. Though a mix of #2 and #3 seems also close.
I know this might seem like a no-brainer, but i've always felt intimidated by adding higlights to eyes. Everything can look great but the highlight can make or break it.
Hey Mark ur incredible u have such a great way to teach how to draw. I know I’m being a pest about this but I really need ur help with this gorilla. If u don’t mind could u please do a tutorial on one. PLEEEEAAASSSEEE!!!
If you are doing realism or just want to add a touch of realism, then yes, the highlights would reflect the environment. In manga they are more representative of personality or emotion, in which case you want them in, more or less, the same spot.
Surely a highlight pattern depends not on the character but the environment in which he/she is set? Any character facing the same direction in a given environment should exhibit the same highligh pattern. One pattern per character regardless of environment would drive me nuts.
I think highlights are like icing on a cake. Different cakes need different icings. Since there are so many drawing styles, only 4 styles to render highlights seems too limiting. I'd like a more in-depth treatment on highlights, not only on eyes, but on everything. But maybe that’s beyond the scope of a how-to tutorial on UA-cam, and better done in a the context of drawing course, as a part of art fundamentals (read: shading).
The problem with drawing eyes is that everyone is telling what they are doing when they should say why they are doing. Answering the why is more important. I can't get what difference it makes by doing this or that. I can't figure out what emotion it will add by doing this. This also works for mouths
Hey Mark, I actually had a question for you. I'm a manga artisr looking into getting published once I finish my manga but I was wondering if you had any tips on preparing for getting published. Do you typically show your work to friends and see what they think? Also, if I do get published I am sending you a copy and am dedicating part of the story to you since you have pretty much been my manga teacher over the years! :D
It's not the material that makes the Artist but themselves.. It's about what you're comfortable with and can use.. Like I'm horrible with color pencils and markers but I'm quite skilled with pastel, and Charcoal
The top right probably most resembles the way I do highlights. I love shiny eyes. Haha. XD
Hello am a Big Fan your tutorial's always helped me!
God bless
Please don't grow old
Never stop making videos
Please come back... real soon.
A friend of mine's little sister really likes drawing, so I bought her the first mastering manga book and every so often I get texts from my friend showing off her little sisters drawings 💖
that book works magic for me
You added hair... BUT NO BLUSHIES??
lol ikr! she needs to be cute!! XD
No no no, every character isn't blushing all the time and doesn't need to be blushing all the time
You could always turn the "milky way" highlight into a custom brush and just stamp it over and over again for every face if you're drawing your manga digitally or edit it digitally.

I really like the first "simplistic" approach and the last one with the "milky way" approach.
Just what I needed, my eyes always look so lifeless...
That's the power of highlights my friend! In manga and anime, characters who are to be portrayed as dead or just soulless dont have highlights which is a trick you can also use to your advantage.

I love the way you colored the eyes. They are so pretty
The highlights are the best part, all the better to make those eyes pretty! ♥ I sometimes like to make a semi-transparent, but brightly-colored highlight shaped like a heart, or a star!
As usual, well done. My personal favs are 3 & 4. I love the extra touch with the twinkle on 4
9:50 omg the ✨ highlight reminds me so much of retro shoujo anime I used to watch with my mom 😆💕 like Candy Candy
No one does such in depth and informative videos anymore mark! Thank you so much for these. Forever grateful to you!
Yes an old fashioned type of your vids, I've missed these
I never thought of using white gauche for these, I love highlights
Perfect timing Crilley sensei - I've just gotten back into drawing manga. Now to just find my copies of Mastering Manga 1 and 2 and I'll be unstoppable!
Amazing video as always, you motivated me to start drawing
I watched your videos a long time ago and now i can't stop drawing thanks to you 😀
“Big honkin highlight” lol Gotta love Crilley 😂😂😂❤️
For the highlights I use, it depends on the lighting. I try to imitate it.

i really hope the next episode is going to start with adding blushies in these drawings!!!
I love the way Miura, the author of the manga Berserk does his eyes, especially in his more recent works
I'm of the "less is more" mindset too, although I do appreciate a subtle ring of highlight on the bottom part of the eye 😊
You should look up shoujo manga from the 60's. "Candy Candy", "Rose of Versailles", or "Lady Georgie". The highlights are magnificent.
@@KieraKun thanks for the tip! 😊
The last one is the shoujo artists ultimate flex practically "KAWAII!".

This is exactly what I needed a video on!
The video that I've been waiting for... Thank you so much for that! 😁😋
I usually use cube shapes for highlights, a long one curving to the shape of the eye on the side the light is and then a couple small squares near it
"GouaaaaaAAAaaache" Haha, that made me laugh. Nice video!
P.S. I'd love to see a video teaching how to draw Violet Evergarden sometime in the future. Just a suggestion :)

@xxaestheticxx
Thanks lol
Good lesson thanks Mark.
The corner of the oval good stuff lol
Christmas is coming, I have a new job, and there are still Mark Crilley books that I do not yet own and need in order to round out my collection. I know what must be done.
I would use the first version, but with a bigger dot. The third though can be really useful if you want a "deer in the headlights" effect. ^^

Honestly, I don't watch anime or like to draw it, but I watch his videos anyway because he's just that entertaining xd
Круто, учусь рисовать глаза)
The second one reminds me of the eyes of the characters in the anime YuYu Hakusho.
Hmm, I think I'm going to try number three.
Almost 3mil subs!! Was subbed since 130k(or somewhere near there)!! Always have loved your drawing style.

do the highlights have to be in the same spots all the time? i thought they just represented lights in the environment reflecting off the eyes.
It depends on what style you're doing. TYPICALLY in Shoujo they stay in one place, moved as necessary. You do you.
@@KieraKun thanks

"Corner!? These things don't have corners! They're ovals. Ovals don't have corners, Crill-dawg.."
Amazing..
I usually do the left bottom one I think.
I like all of emm

If you do more steampunk stuff try searching flintlock pistol instead of steampunk gun.😊
