    No eye shines= dead looking, lifeless eyes, light does not reflect off of their more dry, matte surface.
    1 to 3 eye shines= alive looking eyes that have a light source hitting them and reflecting off of them and their watery surface.
    more than 3 eye shines= very watery eyes, reflecting a lot of light. good for crying or extremely excited expressions to help convey the watery nature or excitement and energy in the eyes.

      And yeah I read lol. mostly manga and graphic novels because a) I'm lazy and b) I live for the art, or just shorter stories on my phone (cheaper for me). I also write occasionally.

    When my friends beat me in drawing because:
    Friend #1: is a naturally great artist
    Friend #2: is ambidextrous and can draw both eyes symmetrically
    Friend #3: is so steady
    Me: grabs pencil and tries to draw...
    Immediately gets seizures

    Most artists, who draw eyes similar to these, do not bother with the placement of the highlight against the actual lighting. Mostly they are placed in the same place in multiple situations. Although in close ups, and dramatic situations, they are typically placed more accurately. Though this depends from artist to artist.
    (Just to add on to what Mark was saying about highlight placement and accuracy.)

    • @lucywucyyy
      @lucywucyyy 7 років тому +5

      somthing i hate seeing is when artists place a highlight in a shadowed part of the eye.
      thats not how lighting works reeeee!
      i normally obsess way too much about tiny details that nobody will notice like highlights and lighting while missing the overall image lol.

    So, I was wondering how different facial expressions change the look of the eyes on a character, and when to change the eyes to fit the facial expression. Example: when a character is in suprise or shock the pupils usually get really small. How do you keep the same style, but make the eye fit the expression?
    I like the seconed style the best in the video, thanks for sharing!

    • @koenengelen1
      @koenengelen1 7 років тому +10

      In certain expressions like surprise or shock it's not so much the pupil that changes in size, it's te eyes going wider, revealing the top of the iris and thus making the iris appear smaller. Making the pupil smaller as well may add to the effect.
      It is important to note however that pupil size doesn't change depending on the emotion you're feeling and iris size doesn't change at all. It is however, depending on the art style you're going for, okay to exaggerate in certain situations.
      To summarize, playing around with the positions of the eyelids is important in portraying expression. Hope this was helpful!

    • @theberrby6836
      @theberrby6836 7 років тому +4

      James Grim It's not necessarily the pupil getting smaller when something is surprised, it's the more iris shown. That's a very whole eye; how someone looks when they're surprised or shocked.
      Changing how much of the iris is shown (or how much white of the eye is shown with that) it's what really changes someone expressions.
      You could have a sad face, but when you change the eyes, it's a different expression, and you change it again, it's different again. But don't just keep the same mouth shapes or eye brows either, you might know that.
      It does help the expressions a lot.
      And changing the size of the pupil larger or smaller does help too in big ways when you do add them. Having something look REAALLLY shocked, or REAALLY sad, or angry, and innocent.
      I'm sorry if this is confusing. ^~^'

    I personally think all look great, they show different emotions, the sclera (white part of the eye) could use more "shine" or "reflection" especially in the last one, as it seems as if the eyes have lost hope but is reflecting what made her lose hope (like a devastation after a bomb drop), but all in all they all look gorgeous! ♥

    In the future, I'd like to see a video on how to draw a more realistic anime side-profile view. I don't draw with an overly cartoon anime style, so it'd be pretty useful.
    Either way, I loved this video. When I draw characters, to avoid same-face syndrome, I give them all pretty unique irises because it'll easily differentiate them. It's a really useful thing for beginning artists, so they don't develop the aforementioned 'same-face syndrome'. Keep it up, Crilley.

    Quick tip, add a very light tint of a certain color to reflective parts of the iris to emphasize context.
    Note i make the distinction between iris and cornea (transparent bit that sits on top of the iris).
    For example red might be bloodlust, purple magic, etc.

    Hey Mark! Thanks for your weekly videos as usual.
    I may missed a specific video but I wonder if you made one about drawing eyes in different sizes. What I mean is that one thing to make a character design with a specific type of eye but how it will be look on the comic itself? Because the design is way more larger than the actual characters in the manga. How should we "simplify" the eyes and other details what are prominent in close ups but the details decreades the quality of a smaller version of the characters faces?
    PS.: Mastering Manga rocks, I think it is one of the best book of the topic, I bought all three of them and I will absolutely buy Manga Art next month!

    I love the way he gives it effect ect even though he's always been black and white with his drawings(exception of brown) id love to see him color something with different colors (actual color no shades maybe for outline) hope it wasn't confusing

      Don't give up!! I know it's so cheesy but seriously, don't. If you like drawing, keep drawing! It's the only way you'll improve, I promise. Everyone had to start somewhere. Mark didn't come out of the womb drawing like this lol

      jenjen11656808 well its funny but I was just thinking about stopping drawing because I cant seem to be getting anywhere. Then randomly I read this and it was the slight push I needed to get back in the game. so thanks!!

      Abhivyakti Maurya In one of his tips videos he says of comparing yourself to others unmotivates you stop doing it.

    Hi Mark! I love your videos and have been watching your videos since Miki Falls was very new. I really enjoyed your recent tribute to Calvin and Hobbes. Maybe you could do a similar study of Studio Ghibli's style; I think it would be very interesting to see your take on it!
