- This video shows how an Explosively Formed Penetrators forms its projectile.
Please keep in mind that this video is about getting a basic idea of how the process works. It's not an actual simulation of the event.

Are you an FBI agent by chance? The boogaloo isacomin’ even without your low quality bait.
Isn't this just how a shaped charge works?
@@jbradley8659 Yes, Explosively Formed Penetrators is a type of shaped charge.
I'm glad you said it was a simulation. It did seem like the slug was actually going across the screen somewhat slower than 2km/s. Anyway a mere slug going through armour is pretty impressive, l would have expected that you would need s snail with a really thick shell, one of the pointy ones you can see on a beach.
The amount of human effort and intelligence which goes into blowing stuff up just in order to blow even more stuff up is staggering.
Yes it is and the applications of it effects many industry's
You mean Americans. XD
@@simontide6780 Well... both Americans AND humans.
I remember the story of how matches were invented by accident by a pharmacist trying to develop a new explosive. Would be nice to have 1. enough time in the job to do this and 2. being allowed to do do so today in the job. Would make it more exciting
Back in the eighties, a wealthy businessman was killed in his armored limo by an EFP that was in the basket of a bicycle beside the road. It was set to go off when it sensed the second car pass, to allow for the security vehicle leading the limo. It went off perfectly and hit the limo so hard that it spun it 180 degrees (due to the armor absorbing some of the projectile). The victim was killed. I can't remember what the specifics were, but I remember being a kid and thinking how incredible and terrifying this was.
The movie?
Think it was the German Red Army Faction (or Baader-Meinhof gang) that carried out that attack if I recall correctly. They even told the German billionaire the day they intended to kill him and used a laser activated bomb to initiate the attack.
German banker in 1989. Bled to death from losing his legs.
That’d be Alfred Herrhausen. They never truly found out who did it, but my money would be on the Red Army Faction.
There was a light beam trigger on a parked kids bike - as I remember
It works well. Back in the 90 we had to deal with it daily. I remember I had to cut wire of two of this devices
That's absolutely terrifying
So EFPs do not form a “jet” (like a conical shaped charge often used as a HEAT round against tanks)? It forms an actual, solid projectile hurled out like a bullet at great speed?
Yes, they don't form a jet but deforms the metal into various projectile shapes. In both cases, HEAT and EPS, the liner always remains solid.
@@operationalfacts5602 thx for the KT (Knowledge Transfer). I did not know EFPs did that. I imagine it's a completely different animal for armor engineers to defend against
An explosively formed shaped charge is a clever, clever girl.
Yeah, don’t get it.

Huh?
anyone else here because of the terminal list? lol
Yup watched that 2 episodes back!
Yup! had no idea what an EFP was! xD
Me ✋
Yup!
loooolll
A 9mm bullet has 500J energy, this thing is 10,000x more powerful than a bullet.
I mean it meant to be anti armored vehicles so ye ofc it gonna need lot of energy
Its designed to destroy mbts (well it does destroy mbts with no issue)
The projectile is also 10.2kg
How?
@@sturmgewehr4454 i doubt it can destroy any modern ones
Years ago I was shown how to make one of these with pennies and a ballpeen hammer, some galvanized pipe and a shotgun shell.
That sounds pretty cool, how well did it work?
@@Keklord_ he made it, I used it
@@Keklord_ It didn't.
You need High Explosive, which isn't in shotgun shells, for this to work.
They just made an improvised shotgun or pipe bomb.
Although improvised shaped charges are real, you can't make it from common household items
I fxcking read the title as " The Slug Shaker" ;_;
My brain has completely rotten away
the slug shaker gimme the slug shaker dude
Oh, you've got an explosive on you alright, see that's what he's talkin' about! Spread your explosive open, dude. You can do the slug maker, huh? The slug maker, give me the slug maker! Make your slug. Take your explosives off it and make that slug, pull your explosives up, I know you can make it. Make it. Yeah, that’s some explosively formed slugs right there.
💀💀💀
What is the difference between an efp and an anti tank heat round?
HEAT is a type of EFP
HEAT rounds have conical liners and create a jet of metal (note: contrary to common belief, the metal isn't "molten" - it just flows like that under the immense pressure). The jet achieves optimum penetration if the round detonates ~1 or 2 feet away from the armor, but degrades dramatically at distances >2m.
EFP‘s with concave liners (like in the video) create a slug with a generally lower penetration, but they will retain that penetration over much greater distances (like ~20m).
As a result
•HEAT is used for warheads that are launched directly at the target.
•EFP’s are used in off-route mines (where size isn't the issue) or in special top-attack munitions, like ATGMs with "Overfly Top-Attack" modes (NLAW, TOW-2B) or sensor-fuzed artillery rounds (SMArt, BONUS).
*note:* (yes, both metal jets and slugs are technically EFP's, but usually people will use 'EFP' specifically for the slug version)
I'm probably on a watch list now.
I was already on the watch list, don't be scurred.
Good job!
2 km/s.. insane 👍😬💥
Imagine this thing has proximity fuse, it could take down attack helicopters with thick armor.
Modern anti-tank mines come to mind
It is already there in tank protection systems you buffons.

The terminal list 🙏
the terminal list s1e5...
U forgot the efp envelopes in itself
here because of the Terminal List!
Why isn`t this concept used in pistols, smgs, rifles or machineguns?
My guess is that since it`s so fast it`s also quite accurate up to a certain distance without the need of rifeling in a barrell.
The container is destroyed in the process. So my guess is making the barrel of the gun thick enough to not be destroyed would required turning the gun literally into a hand held cannon.
@@operationalfacts5602 what if it launched a projectile a set distance that would arm after a certain amount of rotations, that way the explosion happens at a safe distance. It'd mean there's a minimum range tho, but safer that way
cmon normal guns are good enough if we upgrade them, itd be railguns not a fricking hand EFP
@@apolloaero The accuracy would probably be terrible. It'd be better to make it a shaped charge. That's if it doesn't destroy itself from the acceleration.
@@apolloaero This is pretty much how most anti-tank weapons work. The penetration is proportional to the diameter of the warhead, which is why you don’t see this scaled down to bullets and such.
