      I'm glad you said it was a simulation. It did seem like the slug was actually going across the screen somewhat slower than 2km/s. Anyway a mere slug going through armour is pretty impressive, l would have expected that you would need s snail with a really thick shell, one of the pointy ones you can see on a beach.

    Back in the eighties, a wealthy businessman was killed in his armored limo by an EFP that was in the basket of a bicycle beside the road. It was set to go off when it sensed the second car pass, to allow for the security vehicle leading the limo. It went off perfectly and hit the limo so hard that it spun it 180 degrees (due to the armor absorbing some of the projectile). The victim was killed. I can't remember what the specifics were, but I remember being a kid and thinking how incredible and terrifying this was.

      Think it was the German Red Army Faction (or Baader-Meinhof gang) that carried out that attack if I recall correctly. They even told the German billionaire the day they intended to kill him and used a laser activated bomb to initiate the attack.

    So EFPs do not form a “jet” (like a conical shaped charge often used as a HEAT round against tanks)? It forms an actual, solid projectile hurled out like a bullet at great speed?

    • @operationalfacts5602
      @operationalfacts5602  4 місяці тому

      Yes, they don't form a jet but deforms the metal into various projectile shapes. In both cases, HEAT and EPS, the liner always remains solid.

    What is the difference between an efp and an anti tank heat round?

    • @operationalfacts5602
      @operationalfacts5602  Рік тому

      HEAT is a type of EFP

    • @maxjoechl5663
      @maxjoechl5663 8 місяців тому +3

      HEAT rounds have conical liners and create a jet of metal (note: contrary to common belief, the metal isn't "molten" - it just flows like that under the immense pressure). The jet achieves optimum penetration if the round detonates ~1 or 2 feet away from the armor, but degrades dramatically at distances >2m.
      EFP‘s with concave liners (like in the video) create a slug with a generally lower penetration, but they will retain that penetration over much greater distances (like ~20m).
      As a result
      •HEAT is used for warheads that are launched directly at the target.
      •EFP’s are used in off-route mines (where size isn't the issue) or in special top-attack munitions, like ATGMs with "Overfly Top-Attack" modes (NLAW, TOW-2B) or sensor-fuzed artillery rounds (SMArt, BONUS).
      *note:* (yes, both metal jets and slugs are technically EFP's, but usually people will use 'EFP' specifically for the slug version)

    Why isn`t this concept used in pistols, smgs, rifles or machineguns?
    My guess is that since it`s so fast it`s also quite accurate up to a certain distance without the need of rifeling in a barrell.

    • @operationalfacts5602
      @operationalfacts5602  3 роки тому +24

      The container is destroyed in the process. So my guess is making the barrel of the gun thick enough to not be destroyed would required turning the gun literally into a hand held cannon.
