The Art of HANDSTAND PRESS

  • Handstand press is one of those calisthenics movements that made me obsess over this style of training. After a year of working on my handstand I was pretty satisfied with the results and progress - however one thing was always bothering me. While I was always kicking up to handstand, I was getting notoriously faced with a footage of people entering handstand position in some different way. This strange trick was not only allowing them to perform handstand on the variety of different surfaces, but also remain control and not deal with momentum, not to mention It looked so much better than my lame ass kick up. All these factors really made me obsess over it. Handstand press became my biggest desire, I was literally thinking about it 24/7 and sacrificed a whole year to go through my documented journey of learning different kinds of handstand presses. Over this time I collected my ideas and knowledge regarding the mechanics, different types of presses and developed a solid sense of what works and what doesn't. I decided to put everything together and create this video - for everyone currently chasing, thinking of starting to learn, or having this move on their future goals list. Please tell me what you think about the idea of "The Art of" series and which bodyweight calisthenics movements i could cover in the future.

    I'm now 31 years old and having twins with my wife in March. HS was a big dream of mine, as just like you, I started this year tumbling around on the floor after watching UA-cam videos and now I've finally somewhat mastered some 15-30 second consistant HS. The press however I haven't trained and now my new goal until I get my twins (and not sure how much I can train for some time after that), will be to make any form of HS press. I will rewatch this video again and try to find the easiest progression and then go for it. Thanks, this was very well explained!

    Wow, that was extremely high quality information. You could make a post about it on Reddit r/bodyweightfitness, I bet it would be appreciated by many people.
    Another distinction in classification would be based on the apparatus, so floor, parallel bars, single bar, uneven objects etc., or different grips (supinated, neutral, fingertips, less fingers, fists, wrist etc.) but mechanically they are the same so it makes sense that they are not in the chart, and it would be a lot of variations anyways.
    Some uncommon variations are pressing from a forearm or prayer planche variation, but that's advanced stuff. And the craziest presses I've seen are from one arm elbow lever through one arm handstand flag with a straight body, and one arm planche presses. I wonder if someone's done it all the way from a one arm support hold, I've only seen someone reaching the horizontal one arm planche position from there.

    • @FrinksmovementTV
      @FrinksmovementTV  4 роки тому +2

      Good point with the uncommon advanced variations. Well i obviously did not mention any one arm variations, but good point they do exist. Yes and very good point with apparatus, i thought about it but decided to create it based on mechanics. Lastly, I always hesitate cause i heard reddit communities are not really positive about self promoting. So unless someone posts my stuff there I don't do it myself. Thank you for the comment! Always appreciate the feedback of this type.

    • @MassimoKokhno
      @MassimoKokhno 4 роки тому

      At the moment the rules for that community are that you can post self promoting content once a week, it just has to include some info in the post itself, not just the link to your video, so for example you could write down a summary of the points mentioned in the video.
      If in doubt you can message the moderators with a preview of your post and ask if it's fine. The people who get their posts removed usually didn't even read the posting guidelines.

    7:00 yo i was doing back limbers (what you call backbend press) a few years ago, if anyone does that make sure you are flaring your elbows outward. i would do the opposite cuz i was used to keeping my elbows in when doing handstand push ups. one day i was doing back limbers until i couldn't do any more, go do something else, come back and do more, etc. eventually i severely disloacted my arm, it was like in front of my collar bone. thankfully i intuitively reset it myself safely and overall haven't had any long term consequences, but i still don't train this move anymore. but i never was able to do any other kind of handstand press at all (nor was i ever any good with even the tuck planche), i was just very good with the back bridge. at one point i could go from a standing position, lean back into a wrestler's bridge without using my hands, and then stand back up directly from the wrestler's bridge, never touching the ground with anything besides my feet and the top of my head.

      I have been working my hamstring flexibility and it's got much better, (palms flat on the floor now) but my shoulder strength is a weak point compared with the rest of my (upper) body.
      After a day of heavy press work I've also had a pain in my weaker side shoulder, which I'm now looking to work on.
      Any tips for that? It's the lateral raise movement that brings me pain. The pain is not too bad but I want to address it.

    Bro really amaizing work... Your channel is really underrated and more people should watch you, and you REALLY cought me on hs press, I have been practicing hs for a month now and got stronger shoulders, mostly for planche, but I decided to go a bit slower cuz I was doing planche training for 8 months and I cant even hold a straddle planche, and I was always wondering, with side facts that the planche is the most hardest isometric elements in calisthenics, why are there people who achieve planche in less than 6 months, what did they do to achieve this, and I think u made me realize that press is really important and I left planche on waiting list for now, until i get strong in hs press, I wont be training planche lmao, good work!

    very interesting ! and amazing work! like an encyclopedia video ^^ love your work man
    gotta work back on those. I left my hanstand press on the side to focus on planche. it motivates me to go back to it and get the pike one!

      Thank you so much! Love the fact this one motivated you, however good thing is planche work really helps with press handstand. The only thing it does not cover is the mobility part but you gonna get it very fast im sure. If you had straddle press pike press is very very close.

    Great video sir, how have I never seen your channel before!!?? So impressive man, I wish you massive growth, your efforts will be rewarded 🙏🔥
    Learning HSPUs this year and one of the things I'm trying to do is improve my kickups, but I've been thinking instead to rather learn a press like this. So this video is perfect for me, thank you!!

      Thank you so much. Being appreciated for what you do is such a valuable thing, and this comment made my morning. Great idea to switch to handstand press. Once you get that the kickup will come along the way as well. Good luck brother!

      @@FrinksmovementTV Thank you, I think that's sound advice! Once again, great effort brother, it's like I always say, some of the best channels with the most authentic people are the smallest ones. I guess it's just one of those things, but hey, glad to have found you bro! 🙏

    i just started my handstand journey on 2 months ago, but because of the fear of overbent while kicking my body.. i started my training with frogstand to handstand, but i just learn from your chart that its categorized as bent arm frogstand press...
    no wonder i was struggling so much lol ...
    but hey now i can do it easily, but the problem is its really hard for me now to stabilize it :(
