  • I had never heard of the Redshift Shockstop system until a few weeks ago. Had I been missing something special or is this just another cycling fad? I took the Redshift Shockstop stem and seatpost for a mixed surface Ribble CGR gravel bike ride in the beautiful New Forest and an 87 mile Triban RC520 road bike test. The results were unexpected.

    Hi Roy, thanks for the mention in review, I watched it Saturday, day of review. I had watched other reviews I think they were American and some had said go for stem 1st, but when I watched your one you thought seatpost 1st. On Sunday 9pm I ordered the seat post on Amazon and it was here 4,30pm Monday , it was easy to fit, I have been fine tuning since, it’s brilliant, I have been along a rough tarmac path beside a local sports field that would shake teeth out, it is much smoother. I have had 4 rotator cuff operations, plus my 2 broken pelvis bones last year, in summary it is like riding a magic carpet now, faster and doesn’t upset the handling of bike

      My goodness, Alastair. That has worked out well. You suggested the review and got some benefit as well, so a perfect outcome. I just rode 100k and my buddy was asking me to slow down so, like you, I am noticing greater speed over distance.

    Anyone remember the Girvin FlexStem from the eighties? I got into mountain biking in the late eighties and I still have my first custom built MTB by a Bristol bike builder (Overbury's - they're long gone I think) and it still has the Flexstem... had a couple of different coloured elastomers to interchange - the thing weighed a ton though!!!!

    I had the Red Shift seatpost on a Riese & Muller Ebike that I hired for a month (subsidised for NHS staff) in February & I found it to be extremely comfortable. Plus it was most certainly needed on a bike that weighed over 24kg.

    Yes! Just ordered my stem & seatpost. I'm recovering from being struck by a vehicle back in April 2021, while going to a group ride early morning. But when doctors clear me again to bike ride. I'm using these to ease into riding my roadbikes again, since my arm and leg can't handle road shock just yet since I had titaniumin in my arm and a bone graft in fractured leg. Really appreciate redshift team made these and right when I need them to recover the most! Many thanks!

      @@RideWithRoy thank you Roy. I now have the shockstop post and stem on my belt driven single speed e-bike. I have ridden it 3 times with a friend and although my leg muscle is still weak and healing, I was able to put in 15-20 miles without pains. The seat post is amazing for smoothing the roads here, I just put the stem on this week and haven't gone out to try it yet. I'm mostly riding local sidewalks while I heal, and nothing too difficult. I rode my mountain bike one time and that was my first ride back, but it was more challenging without electric power. I hope to be stronger by one years time since my final surgery, and that would make it June time for me.

    Hi Roy. Thanks for your detailed review. Just bought the redshift seatpost to deal with the rough, pot holed roads in London. Wow, you have had a few interesting comments, I have been tweaking the settings again but not so happy, I have had another look at the instructions and they have stated that upon taking the seatpost out of package I should dismantle it all and grease all the innards and smear the tube. I did this earlier and have just been out for a short spin on my rougher local tracks and road, I really think greasing has taken seat post to another level. You are not usually asked to dismantle a brand new product and grease and reassemble, so I suggest we all do it if not already done. I am now looking for bumps instead of opposite.

    I’ve just come up with another justification for the cost. I am having to replace both of my Selle Italia seats as the front housing where the rails fit has cracked and they are creaking badly. With the Shockstop system I expect the lack of vibration will extend the life of the saddle.

    I bought the stem a couple of years ago for my GT Grade and it was quite good but bought a Specialized Creo 18 months ago which came with an adjustable stem which is even better as you just turn a knob to adjust which you can do whilst riding. Bought the suspension seat post 6 months ago and it is fantastic. Had to make a little stiffer than recommended but that is a personal choice. With an electric bike weight is not really an issue I use 38mm Marathon Plus tyres which aid comfort and roll very well but 800g each. Because they are a potential problem to remove if I ever have a puncture, none to date after 14,000 miles, I made sure I bought inner tubes with removable valves so if I do get a puncture I can pump in some “Stans” tyre sealant which hopefully will keep me mobile till I get back to a warm garage. I read your review on the Ribble AL and it does seem good value which has resulted in an order backlog till May 22. The thing that did strike me was the archaic method of changing assistance levels compared to the Creo which now has satellite buttons on the bars, one to move up and the other to move down. When one buys an electric bike, one will almost invariably cycle more miles so I think one of the most fundamental issues irrespective of make, is buy one that has an extender battery facility

      Thanks, Mike. Oddly, and counter intuitively, even though the seat post adds weight it has genuinely made me faster on the Triban - not that I’m looking for speed. Like you, I adjusted much firmer than advised. I can see how a ‘live’ adjustment would be useful. Good tips on the tyres too, thanks. I’m just making the leap into Tubeless for my new build - more about how that went in an upcoming edition. With regard to the iWoc button, I like it. It keeps the bike looking sleek and does the job well when you’re used to it. Ebikmotion do offer the bar mounted option for those that prefer it. Thanks again for taking the time to contribute 👍

      @@RideWithRoy I tied tubeless on 2 bikes and did not find them satisfactory because even though they do self repair, the moment you go at speed over a bump they pop. It occurs to me that the tyres are not particularly puncture proof because in theory they self repair. My understanding is they are more suited to mountain bike tyres. Going Back to the electric bike I have found it multiplied my enjoyment many fold. I ride with lots of guys in their 70’s who struggle like mad especially on hills but somehow think it will be a reflection on their manhood if they go ev

    I have a Thudbuster ST seat post on my Surly LHT and would hate to be without it now. I've had spinal fusion surgery and I've also had rotor cuff injuries so a suspension seat post makes a huge difference to me. I think the Redshift Shockstop has more travel than the Thudbuster ST and is much more suited to gravel and trail riding. Ideal for the conditions you tested it in. For more touring orientated riding the Thubbuster ST is a good option. Nice review. JP

    For this testing you should have tried road tyres @ 100psi.. no stem and seat… then with the stem and seat..
    Then tried it with gravel tyres no seat and stem.. and then with stem.
    In my experience…I have the stem myself. It’s great. It def reduces road buzz on road tyres… on gravel tyres I find the tyres remove a lot of buzz… but it add extra comfort…
    In terms of perceived suspension, I think it’s about the same as going from road to gravel tyres.
    And I also had arm issues with the vibration
    I paid U.K. full price… it’s cheaper then the physio I would have needed having not bought it.
    I’d never ride a road bike with out it !!

    I watched this video with great interest when you first released it as I have always experienced numb hands after only +/-45 minutes of riding. Yes, I have had a professional bike fit with a really experienced fitter but to no avail. I am now starting to experience meaningful lower back pain that has kept me off the bike for a few months.
    My question is, after many months of use, do you feel that the Redshift products would be a good addition to an older Specialized Tarmac?

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  2 роки тому +1

      I never suffered from back pain, Don, so difficult to comment, but I have suffered numb hands. Far be it from me to argue against bike fitting, but I know others who have even developed discomfort after bike fit, where they never had pain before. I do occasionally suffer from numb hands, and it’s always after a change of saddle position. I know the law says we have to have a perfectly horizontal saddle, but I need to have a slightly nose up angle. If not I get numb hands - even with the Redshift stem. I’m pretty sure a fitter would set my saddle up horizontally. I know a couple of people that have tweaked their position AFTER spending money on a professional fit. The only time I couldn’t solve numb hands was when I bought a bike that was too large for me, and no bike fitter would overcome that. After saying all that, I would not recommend the Redshift stem for your situation as I doubt it would solve it alone. What I would do is experiment with saddle position, including height and fore and aft. The Redshift products are excellent components that I would still heartily recommend to improve overall comfort, but basic comfort has to be there first.

    • @dcm6073
      @dcm6073 2 роки тому

      @@RideWithRoy Thank you very much Roy for the detailed response to this complicated problem. I was hoping that a simple addition of some components would assist but your point that "basic comfort has to be there first" clearly answers my question.
      You mention saddles. I have tried three different ones this past year with little, if any, change. Perhaps that is due to my setting each new one up in precisely the same manner as the bike fitter had.
      As you have suggested, it's time to start experimenting with fore/aft and height adjustments.
      Thank you again for your honest answer. It's refreshing to have an on-line support such as yourself who isn't just interested in selling product if it has no reasonable hope of correcting an issue.

    Probably not for me. Suspension systems keep cropping up on the Paris- Roubex, but none have really gained any following. A better alternative might be a mtb with suspension. You can often get smooth faster treaded tires for them. Hardtail mtb would be a good compromise.

    • @RideWithRoy
      @RideWithRoy  2 роки тому

      I do have a Cube hardtail MTB, David, and have run it on smoother tyres in the summer, as I’m not into difficult trails. It may be that there are lighter versions, but I do find it heavy and the gearing doesn’t lend itself to faster speeds on Tarmac. I rode 100k in Spain on a Scott MTB, mainly on tarmac, and really knew about it the next morning. I could certainly do without the Redshift suspension kit, but I’m pleased I don’t have to. As I think I said in the video, rather than slowing me due to the extra weight, strangely, it seems to have increased my average speed. I’ve since heard this from others.
