    Hi Shaun. Useful and interesting as always, many thanks. I bought the landzie from your link in an earlier test video and am very happy with it. The soil at one of the houses is very heavy clay. The ground hadn't really taken water after the drought so the going was a bit heavy and it clogged occasionally but the lawn is looking good (waiting for dry to mow - still growing late November!!) after lots of water and I am 20 lbs lighter now. 😁👍

    I have that Walansee one, it worked well for about half an hour then one tine clogged and no matter how many times I unblocked it, a core would never pass through that tine again. Eventually the same happened to the other tine and again once blocked it wouldn't work again after unblocking, even tried a skoosh of WD40 on the inner of each tine. Any ideas?
    I'll probably invest in one of the premium ones for spring but curious to why the Walansee is problematic.

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  12 днів тому +1

      Hi to be honest they all clog eventually. You could try filing the tines to make them Sharper on the edges. Even my machine tines clog but I just carry on. Usually eventually they soil comes out after a few pushes

      @@LawnRight Thanks for the quick reply Shaun on an old video. I get that they will all clog from time to time, I just couldn't figure out why once blocked, cores would never pass through again no matter how many times I unblocked them. I'll try sharpening up the tines before I use it again and see how it goes.

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому +1

      Hi thanks! So it's just an increase in certain bacterial types/fungal organisms..you could fork or aerate the area and put warm washing up water on regularly..slow progress but doable ..alternatively applying turfsolv regularly may slowly help also.

    I've seen recommendations to leave the plugs on the lawn to break down as topsoil, sweeping them into lower areas to level the lawn, or using a mower to break them up faster. Any thoughts?

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому +1

      I very rarely do this and always aim to clear up.. however if its a dry day and the cores are sandy then Ill often try the mower as it redistributes the cores back as a topdressing... however if theres a lot of thatch (as in its not been scarified) there will be thatch in the cores, so really it all depends on each situation

      @@LawnRight I failed at my first attempt. Some tips for you if you want... Don't make the hole in the centre of the pot otherwise it'll sit too close to where you place your foot and your boot won't fit in terms of width. So make the hole off centre and then cut down the side at the width you need. I then duck tapped both the inside and outside of the vertical cut to secure it into place. Good luck! 👍

    Hi Shaun
    In so many other lawn videos those so called experts are saying that you can keep the cores on the lawn and let them be composed into fertilizer.
    What is you opinion on that?

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому

      Hi Douglas.. so it all epends really.. if youre on heavy clay, and youre trying to improve the soil youd want to clear them up, or pop them in a bucket and mix with gypsum, humic acid and compost to improve then re-dress... or simply pick up and apply the above over the lawn.. If its a sandy soil I sometimes use the mower to break them down and this puts some back.. but by and large I dont really do this.. not saying Im 100% right and always open to long term improvements in my methods, but so far so good (I think) :)

    I have the Swordman which I bought earlier this year. I ham planning on scarifying back garden next spring so not sure whether I should aerate now or leave it until I scarify. Is it worth scarifying now once I get the leaves off the back. Not my tree by the way. Thanks Shaun

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому +1

      Hi.. I'd leave scarifying for definite ... unless the lawn is in direct sun all day long.. but with a tree nearby is advise against. As for aeration now it would help,but if its pretty happy and not getting boggy then wait while spring.

    When aerating two or three times a year are you better each time filling aerated holes back in with westland weed free 70/30 topsoil or just leave holes open?

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому

      Hi Robert yes you can refill them to try and keep good levels as not filling the holes will "eventually" lead to small imperfections in a flat surface.. the filled material wont add to further compaction as an immediate response, so that's a good thing. However I've aerated hundreds of lawns over the years (when customers dont also want topdressing/filling) and they've all come just fine.

  • @rudolphleroux47

    The counter argument could be that soils will not become compacted provided you add organic material at least once a year. I don’t think aeration works. Plants draw air through their leaves and then transport these to the roots. If you are getting water runoff then it is likely due to clay hence the need to add organic matter(compost) at least once a year to improve the make up of the soil over time. Also all soils have the necessary nutrients a plant needs. The bacteria help mine these nutrients for the plant. Also plants make their own food via photosynthesis. Their should be very limited human intervention.

    • @LawnRight
      @LawnRight  Рік тому

      Hi.. love the answer..im slowly edging to this organic approach myself. For now it can help (in my humble opinion) but yes as you say,adding of compost is def beneficial along with other products..many thanks

    Another very useful video, thanks. I use a rolling lawn aerator as I have quite big lawns. The problem I’ve found with it is that the spikes aren’t that long and being fairly light they didn’t always go to full depth. A useful tip if you have one of these is to attach a paving slab or other heavy weight on top of it secured with cable ties. The added weight really helps the spikes to penetrate fully. Do you think these aerators are effective enough though - I assume anything is better than nothing?

    • @R-11034
      @R-11034 Рік тому

      Forgot to add you need to pull the aerator not push it! Also be careful to secure weight carefully - you don’t want it dropping off on your toes!!
