Not far off at all on the analysis here bois! The overall lyrical vibe on this album is seemingly about all the fascist right wing nutjobs and crackpot conspiracy folks that have cropped up since the Trump/Clinton election cycle and how it really ramped up to a fever pitch during the pandemic. It seems like Trevor had a friend or family member (or potentially both) who started falling for all hate and fear that was being fed to them and they kinda "went over to the dark side". He's frustrated and sad that this person he felt like he used to know so well and be close to could turn a 180 on him. A lot of the lyrics on the other songs off this album have a similar vibe, whether it's about a specific person or society as a whole.
They don’t come right out and say it, but all signs point to the lyrics referring to a former band member that turned ultra religious and started spewing anti-LGBT rhetoric. So he “came out the other side” of sanity saying things the band/Trevor “could not abide.” The dude seemingly did a 180 from the guy they once knew like you said.

The song is about Mike Supina, their former guitar player. His new best friend is Jesus and they can't abide. Also, what Ryan said.
Just saw these guys on Sunday, one of my all time fav bands
