  • Headless vs. Headstock Bass Guitar Experiment. Which of the two construction types has advantages and disadvantages when it comes to sound. Welcome to a slightly different Video on my Luthier Workshop Channel. I already had the idea for this Video 3 years ago and I am so happy that I have finished finally the first Part. I was alway curious about the Sound differences between Headless and Headstock Instruments not just on Basses also on Guitars. So I decided to cut off the Headstock of my Handmade Bass that I have build 10 years a go to answer this question for myself. In the first Part you can follow the process how I construct a brass clamp for clamping the String in position. And at the end there will be a Soundcheck comparison section. Please let me know if you hear any differences and what construction do you prefer and why? There will be a second Part coming up soon. There you can follow the process how I build a Brass looking Nut for this Instrument from scratch and install new Monorails with fine-tuners to make it playable again. So if you are interested in my Luthier Craftsmanship stay tuned and enjoy the Video. I love doing stuff like that - if you are interested in more of my Luthier life Projects, please feel free to check out my other extended Workshop Videos on this channel.
    Enjoy watching and sharing.
    Best Regards Nik

Very insightful! I admire you doing this with one of your own builds 😅🎸
Looks great and sounds great, my eyes want to believe the headless take is brighter but without looking it's tough to say 😂
I look forward to the next video on this! Does this neck have an adjustable truss rod? I couldn't see but your work is also so slick 😎🎸

Thank you so much for watching and commenting my Video. Yes it's really not a big difference....but this is also very surprising to me. Yes there is a Trussrod integrated. The nut is on the Body side like on the old Tellys. Best Regards Nik

Great experiment - I prefer the with headstock sound, as it to me is more round and less metallic than the headless version.

Listening through studio monitors, any difference if present is negligible. Anyone tossing up between a headless/regular bass should have zero concerns about a negative effect on tone :) that brass end you previewed in the next video is amazing

Thanks a lot for analyzing the sound difference on your Studio Monitors Mate. Yes that's the surprising result that I also didn't expect... The Sound difference is really very minimal... In the upcoming Part 2 I will make a comparison with the Handmade Brass Stringclamp and new Hardware and with the two Soundchecks that I already did in this Video. And this will be also very surprising... Best Regards Nik

@@nadie6907 So you assume that If there was Wood behind the Bridge the sound difference would be more intense?

the sound without a headstock seems to have less low resonance, but I saw that you played on the bridge pick up. I assume that the final result is purely aesthetic, with the advantage that the instrument probably weighs less

Scary experiment. But at least if it did not work out you sure have the skills to make another neck. That is a fantastic sounding Bass and there was a slight difference in sound but I could not pin point what it was. It did sound great either way but looks very good headless.

Thanks a lot for watching and for your feedback Gary. Yes there will be a Part 2 coming up soon where you can follow the process how I make a Headless Clamp Hardware for this neck and change the Bridge to Fine Tuner Monorail.. probably in 3 weeks. I didn't hear any change really, but It's my understanding that headless design moves deadspots up the neck, meaning there are often deadspots at the higher end, from around the 12'th fret and up, so we'd need to hear playing examples from the 12 to 20'th fret to really hear the effect. FWIW

I love headless basses (for their aesthetic appeal). I tried not hearing with my eyes, but maybe, just maaaaaybe the headless version has a bit more of that pianolike ring to the notes. Then again, maybe not at all. Won't matter to me as I'm a fan of the headless bass anyway so take this for whatever it may be worth to you.
Also: no truss rod in the bass? My headless has a face plate at the end of the neck through which the truss rod can be adjusted.
