Let's face it: the hound's tooth dovetail is a silly endeavor. And yet, in some instances, that ornamentation can be exactly the thing that's needed for the piece. That's the pickle I find myself in at the moment. And so, I was forced to go above and beyond to cut these corners. Hope you enjoy.

After making dovetails for nearly 50 years, I still stand back and admire them. Much as you did here. I no longer take orders for pieces, but friends, neighbors and family all want custom stuff. My shop rule is that even though I won't make it for you, you can come to the shop and we'll make it together. If they accept, I always begin with a talk that this process is NOT about efficiency, not about saving time or material, not about making something that looks like it came from a box, not about taking shortcuts, and that "good enough" is not good enough. Thx.
That’s really cool. They can learn a new skill and get something beautiful out of it.
@@dylanrapp7629and quite often they won’t show up😀
I’ve been woodworking for about 60 years but that includes several years at the beginning “helping” my grandfather. After all that time, I hope I can make just about any joint I want. But I rarely now use dovetails. They are rarely needed with the adhesives we have and all the options; so, it usually comes to aesthetics and ego. I don’t like the aesthetic of normal dovetails - rarely do they add to the overall design of the piece. By ego, I mean that they often seem to be a semi secret sign to other woodworkers (that I can cut dovetails) and irrelevant to the customer.
The exceptions to me are houndstooth and the Greene and Greene style of protruding tails and pins. Both are personal likes of mine.
I was fortunate enough to mentor a son who is now a joiner himself - and could be a very good furniture maker if it weren’t such a tough trade to find clients for. I do however enjoy the alone time in my shop. I like taking things at my pace; making decisions in my head without having to explain them. The only downside is that my body complains early every day. I can’t use the morticer much any more and lifting larger slabs is impossible.
I would definitely take you up on that
@@gregbarringer1021 I've had some folks who didn't accept the conditions. But, an uncle who wanted a walnut side table freaked out when we went to a hardwood dealer. He suggested we go to HD, buy pine boards and stain them. Also, when I explained gluing up panels, he suggested we buy 2 X 8 white pine to save glue. Wasn't going to work out, so I sent him to IKEA.
Bro tried to make a fine piece of furniture - actually made people skip this video to play Raid Shadow Legends
The ad was a bit long
There's some nice woodwork in the Shadowlands commercial 😂
Seriously, awesome woodwork, and whatever pays the bills.
4 minutes for an ad and then two minutes for your outro doesnt leave a lot left for wood working. your woodworking technique is on point.
I love what you're doing with the paid spots. Fun, hilarious, and showing off your wood... work.
Yeah . . .
but . . .
("real men" don't play video games) 🤣😂😅
I enjoy your videos, and appreciate your creativity in your commercials, but 4 1\2 mins of ads out of 14 mins is a bit much. I know you've got to pay the bills, but...
Four minutes of in-video advert is three minutes and 59 seconds too much.
Agree
completely agree
Agree, but I can seek forward with the best of them, as long as it's not something one of the prolific actively harmful sponsors selling your medical data, making fraudulent health claims, etc. This wouldn't be the first woodworking channel I've dropped for such. The pay-2-win dopamine exploiters are...borderline.
Normally, I just skip ads. But that was just ridiculously funny for no good reason.
OMG. I've been in the business for nearly 40 yrs and always take Fridays off to catch up on paperwork, industry news and a few videos. This video came across and I liked your shop layout and how you begin a new job. Was not expecting the interaction at the 2:00 mark. THAT IS MY LIFE for how I ponder critical steps (just did not realize it!). Have liked and subscribed so looking forward to going through your past videos. Well done- really laughed my ass off.
You mention your hand tool use in this video. One of the things I like about your style is you use machines for efficiency, but recognize when it’s right to get the hand tools out. It’s not machines or hand tools. It’s machines AND hand tools.
Exactly. I can't stand those virtue signalling woodworkers who dimension their boards with a hand saw and hand plane...blah, blah, blah. That's just grunt work and I'm quite happy to let a machine do it quickly and efficiently.
@@bluewren65 I mean, I do everything by hand, but if I had the room and money for a planer and joiner I wouldn’t. So, I’m glad those guys are around to teach me how to do it by hand.
@@christophermcclellan8730 Fair enough. I'm really talking about fundamentalists who think we are still living in the 17th century 🤣. They often have mad skills, but also are just somewhat plain "mad".
Nailed the video. And that cabinet is awesome too! Thanks Eric. Waiting to see your process in coopering the door. Take care & stay safe.
"Fancy Boy DoveTails" ! LOL
This is a really nice blend of using both power tools and hand tools. Thanks!
I’ve always loved using hand tools, and like you said they are slow, but then came my lathe, sharp chisels are a must and there is no good alternative, plus I can knock out finished pieces in under an hour
Excellent video Eric, always good to see you doing something a little different. Thanks for the video.👍👍
That looks really good. You always are stretching your reach. It is very inspiring.
Is it weird that I very much enjoyed watching Erik come up with a design and then work to figure out how to, in a practical sense, make it? That contrast between pure art and pure craft. Maybe I'm getting a tad too philosophical there but that's how I saw it. I continue to appreciate that you spend much more time discussing design than any other woodworking UA-camr I watch Erik. Thank you.
Btw, when Jerry Seinfeld was a "fancy boy" he wore a fur coat and carried a European Carry-All. Just sayin.
Love the houndstooth dovetails! Also, narration adds an element that I don’t think is as easily obtained via non-narrated variety.
if raid doesnt sponsor more of these they are idiots. that was the best raid commercial i have ever seen.
Always entertaining and informative. I see ways you do it. I see ways I'd do it. I see things that inspire me. All good.
You made it
You achieved a Raid Spponsorship 😭
Love watching you work. Very calming and motivating each saturday before I get into the shop, myself. Thank you for the inspiration you provide to me every week
I always find your videos valuable and this isn't an exception, but it did feel a bit short or abbreviated compared to your other work despite the similar run time. I'm excited to see the rest of this project!
love the new 'fancy boy' joinery category... appreciate the showing and process of working through when a snafu happens... Larissa cameo!!!
as always, thanks for sharing and inspiring to 'make a thing'!
The video format threw me off at first. Perhaps, just a quick in camera intro segment before getting into the woodworking in a voiceover format. Even if it is filmed after the project. Second, I enjoyed the ad section. It is perhaps the best RAID ad I've seen. The bonus was that box at the end. Beautiful inlay on it. I know others complained about the length, but you did put a lot into it. Third, any link to Larissa's work or somewhere collective for the members of the shop. It seems like you have been quite busy lately. You talked about the teaching classes and you dropped down to videos every other week. May you enjoy the endeavor and thanks for bring us along for the journey.
I’m hearing you but my eyes are focused on those beautiful dovetails.
Love the way you explain your design decisions. Question, why did you elevate tail board when you cut it on the bandsaw?
Good Job Eric... We do what we do to get our end... Cheers
i still cant get over "hand cut dovetails are to boring, i need to spice it up a little"
I guess thats what happens when youre good
Great video. Love that you’re getting sponsors. I’ve been trying out dovetails, and they are so hard to do by hand. You make it look so easy.
That's just a bit tasty. Format works well, big bonus if it frees you up to only have to think about the thing and not worry about what you are talking about.
Nice video, would have been nice to see more about the hounds tooth layout process
I'm surprised you haven't taken something like a ice scraper where the end can be perpendicular to the handle and use that to brush the shavings out of the jointer
Unfortunately, watching from work this morning and not the wood shop or the couch w/ coffee. Have a great day
great vid, love the balance of your videos in terms of story and technique. I'm curious, do yo have book recommendations for furniture/wood item design?
Dude.....watch a thousand vids. Love your content, and especially your style. Fine, you'll be the 2nd one I'm actually paying as a Patreon!
I liked the layout and flow of the video
I have a question. If I join your patron , I won’t skimp I promise . But when I design my custom pieces for my clients I have some SERIOUS mental blocks. At the right price, do you do text/ video consultation sessions?
thank you EN . had to laugh at the old bit . i was playing gates of anderon in my 50-to early 60s loved it . got to met ppl from all over the world . oh and i was not the oldest playing a couple in thier 70s
Enjoyed the video. Thanks much.
That tail in the ad. 😂😂
I don't expect an answer from you, but maybe some others can provide advice as well. I'm a framer and carpenter by trade, and as I've been learning and practicing making furniture I've found that I bring jobsite habits/mindsets into my workshop. To clarify, the "good enough" attitude. 89.5 degrees is close enough, I cut down the center of my line, it'll be fine. I'm not going to be using blocking, nails, or sistering in boards to reinforce my work, it's furniture not an interior wall. I guess my question is, do you have any advice for adapting my mindset from speed and being pretty darn close, to caring about the fractions of degrees, accuracy of lines, and 1/128ths? I hope the nature of my question is clear.
So with your skill level do you enjoy getting on your knees to remove waste while sniffing the smell of cut wood from your plainer or have you ever thought about improving the dust collection by adding a hose connection that would add a direction for the dust to travel? Just asking....
Erik, I'm trying out your finish on a small project. The first two coats went on with good results, looks and feels great. However on the third coat, it remains tacky even after 24+ hours. I did use boiled linseed oil instead of finishing oil. Is that my issue? Thanks, Mark. PS I know my question has nothing to do with this video, but I tried to reach out to you on Instagram with no luck. So, I'm trying this venue. I appreciate any advice you can offer.
Great video, and the ad is awesome!
All inspired! Time to go make a thing.
Enjoyed watching your thought process on how you lay out your dovetails. About your gaming, It all moves too fast for me. Grandsons love them, old man, not so much. Carry on young man. Semper Fi.
Apparently focusing on the build gave you extra time for the Ad. Well done btw. I want so badly to do a double inlay type dovetail. One of these days.....
Where did your shopmate get that shirt? It’s amazing! 😂😂😂
That was a long commercial.
Do you do anything with all of the long wedge-shaped cutoffs you end up with when lining up your parts with the grain? I’ve saved a whole bunch of mine, hoping to find a way to use them someday.
Hi Curtis, great video as always, any chance you could tell me where you got that DeWalt router base plate from please?
+1 for the Larissa cameo!
Love the videos, wish they were longer
The dust collection on my 8” Grizzly sucks also…
Also… I should probably get a dust collector…
Thanks again. Great video
Hey. I just found your videos the other day and you look familiar. By chance did you take a class in New York with Paul Sellers back in 2010/11? I saw in the background of one of your videos you had the dovetail box from the class sitting on a shelf. Just wondering.
Scooner, beautiful work, but please less ads. 😢
And my Saturday is complete.
It works in this format.
You share a work space with Larissa Huff!? Awesome!
Great video
Thoroughly enjoyed watching your process on houndstooth dovetails. One of these days I will give it a go. I have to tell you that I also stumble with words. Have taken to using your "words are hard" phrase. You need to put that on a tee shirt, I would buy one!!
Well done sir!
Was there some woodwork with that ad?
Why a "gent's saw"? I'm trying to figure out which Western dovetail saw to try/use.
Bro, like you are so cool. Love this channel!
I really enjoyed it.
Great video, appreciate the content.
As usual a great video,!!!
I know you are teaching a class in Vermont this summer and I want to be there for it, but I cannot, for the life of me, find the information that will let me do so. HELP?
@1:04 Yea. the dust collection on my 12" Grizzly *jointer* sucks, too. "Planer" I suppose if we were in the UK.
I have the 8" and the same problem. But for the price and how well it works excepting that, I'll deal with cleaning it out.
I had issues with my 8” until I recalculated the volume/speed/vacuum of my dust collection system and now I have almost zero issues. It only loads up when I forget to open the gate :D
@@happilyreformed I may need to do that. Or move it closer to the dust collector closet. I need to tighten up the motor anyhow, so might as well try this as well. Thanks.
Missed seeing your videos the past couple of weeks
Was that Sycamore on that Truvold box?
is that an almost 4 minute raid add?
I'm so confused. You had a plan but not the necessary tool to execute it. And so instead of buying or taking a side quest to craft a 1/16th" chisel, you changed your plan. This magical thinking is beyond my grasp.
Where will you put **tick** still not have...chisel? Does not compute.
Beautiful work!
Wanted to join, but can't find your clan in game...
You might laugh at me but, do people these days actually give a crap about how complicated the joinery is ? Asking for a friend. Lol. I’m just getting into making things so somewhere between rookie and novice level hence the question. Thx
Wow. That 2 hour ad was ridiculous. New low for any of the woodworking channels I enjoy. Hope they paid well. Really?
That was a, shall i say it, disgraceful ad.
I would have subscribed to you're channel, but a 4 min add for raid is ridiculous. I hope they are paying you well.
They're probably paying him better than anyone else is.
20% of this video is an ad.... :/
It's funny you think you're old.
Maybe you need to worry about the "bottom line"....that way we wouldn't have to go through 4:20 minutes of an ad.
You have the best music, what group is this ? That commercial is about 3 minutes too long
A few thoughts on the sponsor. These types of "games" are just online casinos. They advertise you can play for free, but tie most rewards to participating in a group with other players, which leads to peer pressure to stay competitive as your group competes against other groups. So, the game's model works to promote spending through this peer pressure system. Once more, if you are steering your younger viewers towards games which are very time intensive (these games require you to play daily, most of the day, if you want to be remotely competitive), they are not going to be watching woodworking videos for very long, as they will be watching Raid influencers instead. And they will not be spending money with your other sponsors, since Raid consumes their disposable income. It isn't cheap to play these games if you expect to be any good. All in all, this is not a good business to be promoting to viewers, imho. Nothing productive comes from them. They are more like corporate jobs than games, except one pays them instead of the other way round.
At some point I wanna say f u. But I keep watching your art. We aren’t the same. I respect you within your art. And as a person. I would only hope if we ever met, you could respect me in the same.
Sorry lad, turned this off, ad way too much
Was this just an ad for some shit computer game….?
🤷♂️
I think it's a phone app.
