  • I know how hard it can be, to keep the motivation to persevere.
    Our minds simply don't want us to be in an uncomfortable situation, that's why we give up and shy away from it.
    But even when our minds are telling us that we should call it a day, we usually have more fuel left in the tank.
    We can tap into that fuel by using the Cookie Jar.
    The Cookie Jar was created by a guy called David Goggins.
    Goggins is a retired Navy SEAL, who has competed in more than sixty ultra-marathons, triathlons, and ultra-triathlons. All while also setting new course records and regularly placing in the top five. Furthermore he's a former Guinness World Record holder for completing over 4000 pull-ups in seventeen hours.
    He's known to be one of the toughest men alive.
    He used his Cookie Jar to fuel all of these achievements and continues to use it, to fuel his
    Now you might not be interested in running an ultra marathon. However I believe you would like to be able to keep on going, even when you feel like giving up.
    That might mean studying longer, even if it's extremely boring. It might mean working on your side-business even if you're tired. Or it just might mean going to the gym, even if it's raining outside and you don't feel like it.
    The Cookie Jar can help.

    Don't push too hard! When you feel like you need to pause: PAUSE!!! I pushed through my masters thesis and had to accomplish 6 months of workload in 2,5 months. I barely slept for weeks,12 hours in the lab, eat in between, writing during the night. I finished in time and headed straight home into my bed. I had severe fever for days and slept 20 hours per day, I was dehydrated for the fever and sleeping so much and ended up at the hospital. I needed several weeks to recover and was only fully healed after a few months. Would never do it again! I really recommend to pay attention to your health, it's *THE MOST VALUABLE ASSET YOU HAVE!!!!!* I would recommend another version of the cookie jar: When you feel down, think back to happier moments and relive them. Thinking about them and feeling the feelings agains automatically lifts your mood. (Only applies to feelings that have no bad connotation. Don't think about the loving start of your relationship after breaking up. Rather think about positive childhood memories, your pet, grannys cookies, cuddling your mom, a nice holiday with friends...)

    this might not work for other people but as a person who binge watches and reads a lot, then gets far too attached to the characters (as if i knew them personally), what i do when i feel like giving up is think "that character wouldn't give up in this situation". it reminds me of the things i admire in others and who i want to become. then i can push at least a little bit further.

I also don't want to give up too early when a little more effort could solve things completely and bring clarity. So I find it hard to make this decision as I can't know the future so.

      "When do you let go? - When it feels heavy on your soul. When you feel more trapped than emancipated. When it tastes less sweet and more like poison. When you feel yourself sinking instead of floating. When freedom becomes a battle. Open your heart to intuition; you'll always know.
      When do you hold on? - When hope exists. When it fills your lungs with air, no matter how deep the struggle is. When joy overweighs sadness. When flowers grow from hard spaces in your heart. If you don't feel friction, it's worth holding on to. If it flows, it's worth swimming in."

      i think you're on the right track if you are aware about what's troubling you.
      When to stop - when you feel like you haven't had an exhale, like you have been holding your breath but can't seem to let it out, you should rest and regenerate and push yourself in the things that will actually help you become better, be it anything. You can only do as much as you are capable to at that said moment. You must also stop when you feel like what you're doing and has no outcome and that you're not gaining or learning anything by going through it.
      When to keep pushing - when you know that you want something and that something is going to help you to achieve a better version of yourself and make this world and yourself a tad bit better. When you feel discomfort in going through that but you know that this does not feel good right now but it will help me feel better over the course of it. Also, you should have faith in yourself and believe yourself and listen to your instincts. Write down the pros and cons, and find what is right for you. It might not seem easy but you got this. And finally don't pressurize yourself too much, it's gonna be alright, you don't need to feel like an anvil has fallen onto you, try to calm down and take it easy. Good Luck :)

    Today is my 3rd degree black belt test and unknowingly I have had to use this method at several points in this journey. We do a 12 hour meditation with short breaks every hour and during one of the hours I decided to sit on my knees in what is “proper meditation stance.” Around the 45 minute mark it was extremely challenging, legs are numb and any slight movement causes your legs to go into electric shock from your nerves being cut off. Once that hour was over I felt so triumphant and now it was added to my cookie jar. Another requirement is doing a 3 day fast. I am currently on day 3 (test day!!) and I had to use the cookie jar last night. I was running a fever and endured hours of acid reflux. Waking up this morning I sat and talked to myself mentally, showing myself gratitude for how hard I worked for this moment. There have been literally blood, sweat, and tears. Soon it will all come to fruition today and I can add this entire process to the cookie jar. Keep fighting, because you all are SO much stronger than you even know!

      That's actually pretty cool to read. You were probably one of those kids who would have passed the "marshmallow willpower test." The one where the adult puts a marshmallow in front of a child, and tells them they can eat it now, or if they can wait until the adult comes back, the child will get two marshmallows. A method that works for me consistently is the '10 minute rule' in which I get myself to spend 'only 10 min' on whatever it is that needs doing and then stop (washing, ironing, running, gardening, writing, etc). Strangely, once I start to see the results, the 10 min often turns into 20 or 30 or even reach the end.
    I recommend it.

      A lot of times I dont clean cause I enjoy cleaning. I clean because I remember how good I feel when it's over. Being in a clean home feels good. You hardly come across people "comfortable" in filth.
      It declutters MY MIND. It's not a "to do" list floating in my head. It's doesnt distract me in the corner of my eye when I'm working an a More Important Task. It doesnt block my sink when I need it. It doesn't stop me from cooking. It doesn't attract bugs or flies. It doesn't stop me from having friends over. It doesn't drive me to go eat out (wasting money or unhealthy). It doesnt make me feel embarrassed (like I'm a dirty or disorganized person.) All of this is just useless "chatter" in my head,
      Clean dishes does MORE for me than just "provide something to put my food on."

    Knowing how to quit is not a sign of weakness .... society wired our brain that quitting is a sign that your a loser and you should endure , endure and prove them wrong but that all depends on the circumstances.
    For example you have a toxic relationship to the point where you two where hurting each other not just emotionally, not just mentally but also physically... what to do? Should u still not give up on that relationship because your friends told you two are perfect match, is it because you two have been in relationship for 15 years and it would be a waste to give up and still hope that it will get better in a few months? But few months passed by but relationship is not going to get better. In fact, it’s getting worser every months passed by
    For me it is best to let go on something that is worth letting go like resentment, hatred, jealousy... let go of those emotions. Give them up!
    Also for work ; if someone mistreated you and your complaints goes on deaf ears... you are mentally stress to the point it is affecting your health
    Ask yourself? Is money worth it or is my health worth more than the money? Don’t quit but look for another job and when u found another job then you can let go on the other one that’s making you mentally exhausted everyday and people bully you. Let it go! Learn to let go! *Know your worth*

    This is a fascinating idea, but for depressed and/or low self-esteem people it can be difficult to fill up the jar with tasty cookies. Especially when your mind is in a negative state, it's so much easier to remember bad experiences or failures rather than successes. Especially people who have known lots of failures for most of their life, you really have to dig deep within the jar, as just reaching in lightly you might find a worm instead of a cookie. I think this is a subject worthy of its own video - advice on how to fill up the jar with cookies and positive things that you want to take out and consume.

  • @sunnysocoolio

    I think that this works when we're doing performance tasks- like a marathon, and stuff like public speaking, the last day of a final deadline, or idk a food eating contest- basically I mean when there's a high pressure to complete something and where one might feel more compelled to get it over with than to stop or go back.
    I say this because it's super hard to constancy be in this mindset- we're not anime characters and our energy and willpower are both expendable, most things can be better if we work on them without pushing our limit

    • @emilyx8377
      @emilyx8377 Рік тому +5

      I agree. I would add that this cookie jar trick works better when you have a task with a clear end point in the near future. For a task that has no clear objective, or a task that can drag on for years and years, you might be wasting valuable time and energy trying to use the cookie jar trick. Sometimes it's actually better to quit completely or drastically rethink your strategy for getting the job done. As they say, "work smarter, not harder."

    • @sunnysocoolio
      @sunnysocoolio Рік тому +3

      @@emilyx8377 yes! I agree completely with you on that! That's something I find productivity vids lacking is the concept of quitting something that does not work for you- it's one thing to feel compelled to go on a for something that's goal oriented and has that achievement in one's relative line of sight, but most personal goals are intuitive and blindly pushing through with the might not yield people the happiness and rewards that they might really want in later life

    The reason any person would wanna give up is because they feel like they can't do things, and it doesn't matter what you tell them, they have to see for themselves what they're capable of. And one thing I feel is important is not having a fear of failure, and to see what you can do and try your hardest when you feel like you achieved nothing cause you have nothing to lose, but atleast your trying and if you failed, you know you tried your best, and sometimes we didn't try at all, I think we're gonna have to be willing to face ourselves and work hard in our problem areas in life, struggle through our own personal challenges until we defeat it.

    • @audrinamoon7032
      @audrinamoon7032 4 роки тому +2

      And even if your not as smart, or don't have money, or this and that, whatever you think limits you, it just makes you yourself, and you have to work with yourself, cause once you know what your weaknesses are, you can improve them. I didn't mean to say anyone wasn't smart or compare people, but truth is we all have our own capabilities and level and it's up to someone if they wanna grow themselves. I've had lots of struggles with myself, and I really don't want other young people to feel the same way. Life is fragile, so i'm trying to make the best of it and believe in my dreams, it's really hard for someone like me, I have so many insecurities and problems that always hold me back, but now i'm not gonna be scared to do whatever it takes to grow even if I am afraid and have insecurities. You live and you learn right, I'm not a perfect person, but I know I am a good person and I try to leave the world a better place.

But also for my family because I’ve seen my mother fail school and give up on school and just work. My stepbrother being raised by a lazy father(my stepfather) and is now living from friend to friend and my sister threw her future away for a guy and is now being evicted every 6 months. I still have a younger brother and sister in which I want to show them how to be successful in life. I don’t want them to grow up and view the world based on my families past. I do it all the time. I live in a toxic environment that I'm reminded constantly of every tiny failure I made. Great achievements are ignored, it's always "it doesn't matter" or "but you still failed to do something else", or "so what? do you have money NOW?!". Yep. A family thing. I'm not even mad at them. They were raised that way and it must go this way for hundreds years. That's why it's a typical "poor family". Taught from the earliest childhood that you have to do what they tell you, and if you have any goal of your own you will fail no matter what, and they are always "helpful" to remind you in case you forget it for a while. Yet my life is a chain of "missions impossible". It is my specialty to complete impossible tasks. I do it over and over again. But too often I quit just before the finish line. BTW, every mission is impossible when you are in an environment, where they constantly keep repeating you will fail. And if you succeed, they will find something else that you didn't do. When I think of my greatest achievements in life - I always remember someone saying "but yada yada yada" - how all I've done is shit and literally everything else is more important. BTW, that's also why I don't have money. You never get big money earned "NOW". You build on top of achievements and successes. Every success on the way is nagging intensified. "But you don't have money NOW!!!!!". Then I get even more tired. Then I need to drink or do drugs. Until reset. And start over. But I'm stubborn. I switched to alcohol free beer. I quit drugs. And I have the last few miles ahead.

    My mental health greatly improved when I started expecting less from myself. I'm still a workaholic and perfectionist, but I don't beat myself up too hard anymore. When I do need to do something difficult, I think about how proud I would be if I did it well. I also think about the regret I would experience if I only gave something 95% instead of 100%. I've also learned that consistency and frequency is ideal rather than sporadic activity for long-term goals and skills.

    This reminds me of when I was middle school. I joined the soccer team and was horrible, but we were forced to run a mile to warm up every day. Normally I can’t run far or fast, but during practice I was forced to keep up. When we had to run a mile in gym I just thought, “I’m part of the soccer team, this will be easy” I completed the mile in about 7:00 min. which is really good for me.

    Instead of cookies I would choose fruits or healthy treats, since I've given up on sugar to help me get clearer skin for some years now 😁 Thanks for your videos! They really inspire me to be more productive.

    Goals are really difficult for me because I always get distracted by new interests.
    I love practicing persistence in small things every day and cheering myself on at the end. Today I kept going during my run when I was tired. On days when I'm tired, I pick running exercises that are a little easier. On days when I'm not, I pick ones that are a little harder. This is helping me get better at persistence.

    The COOKIE JAR METHOD is similar as FOCUSING on REWARDS WHICH is what you're supposed to do and THE COOKIE JAR METHOD is focusing on PAST rewards which is good and apply that with focusing on future rewards to multiply success.

    It's not always a good idea to do things stimulating your dopaminergic system, you can become an adrenaline addicted person. Especially when your body is tired and exhausted.
