This is great! I just started carving this winter (at 72!). Thank you, Doug, for your fun tutorials! My mom also started in her later years and her box of tools has been sitting in my closet since her passing. So, after purchasing protective hand gear, knives, and strop I finally got up the nerve. I thank my mom for her inspiration and can only hope to be as successful. I’m delighted with everything I’ve made so far, and my family is so supportive. I have to be careful to set time limits so I also keep up my chores and exercise but I do incorporate collection of wood while hiking. Doug, you’re enjoyable to spend time with -never change. Thank you so very much for sharing your talent with us!
I discovered Doug six years ago when my wife and I cut our cable TV connection due to the declining quality of broadcast TV. She subscribed to several streaming services and I began watching You Tube. I am an avid hiker who loves the outdoors. With my interest I found Joe Robinet doing bush craft on You Tube. Joe is an honest adventurous and likeable guy who can best be described as frenetic. I enjoyed watching him a lot.
Joe introduced a friend named Doug when they did a trip together. It was Doug’s calm nature, dry whit and humble nature that when contrasted with Joe made him very appealing to me. I began watching Doug doing his bush craft thing religiously. The more I watched the more I felt that here was a guy that I could have a coffee with or hike with or just hang around with. His warm honesty and humility drew me in. I have commented many times on his channel that I would watch him mowing his lawn and be happy to watch. I have witnessed his evolution from outdoor adventures to indoor carving. Inspired by him I began to pursue green wood working and carving as well and carving knife making.
When you asked him what made him watchable and successful (his humility would make him say he was not successful) he jokingly said it was his personality. THAT is exactly what makes him watchable. I love the carving and coffee series and the live streams. I watch him because I like him. I am 72 years old having retired from a professional career of 45 years five years ago. My career took 7 years of higher education to get qualified for. Watching Doug I wish I had decided to be a maintenance man in a church or non profit and done wood working for a living all those years instead of what I did. I am just glad I found him in my retirement.
Doug is awesome! He is the one that got me started in carving. Can’t beat his delivery in teaching videos. I agree when he says once you have the basics it’s easy to follow along with his other carving videos. There is nothing more relaxing than his carve and coffee videos! Blake Tom and Doug. That’s a team! Great job guys. 👍👍
Doug was my intro to wood carving. Being a ornamental blacksmith for 50 yrs. It was nice to be able to go camping with just a knife and some wood. Like any craft you'll learn till you die.
All three of you did a great job on this podcast. A relaxed and entertaining discussion. Love Doug’s work and POV. Always look forward to Doug’s next video and more IAWC presentations. Thanks Thom, Blake and Doug for all you do for the carving community and for helping us get through the dark days of COVID (true north carver)
This is a great pod cast. I'm sure there are many who can relate... I have watched Doug from the get go.He was the 1st I watched and could relate to the style of his teaching. On the jubject of people taking the credit for his carvings. When I see that I say that's great I see you follow Doug.I myself have done Doug's little peps and always say who I learned this from. 💙 Great way to wind down. Truthly another reason, that in this world nice to have something that calms you besides music. SO great escape . Both play well togetber.I have made a carving studio also. Thank you Doug and IAOWC Also: My fav video was the Boat Trip for Supplies and making the Owls
Great video guys. My thanks to Blake, Tom, Dave and of course Doug. It was watching Doug’s videos that inspired me to pick up a knife and carve some wood. It is now a great hobby of mine. Am I any good? No. Are my carvings getting better? Yes! I just need more practice! Keep up the good work IAOWC.
miss Doug on youtube; I'm not a carver at all, but I so enjoyed his 'supply run' and so wish Doug had continued the story; and I also enjoyed seeing his quirky chicken coup and his bird feeding stations and his lovely natural garden; I also enjoyed his walk with his daughter in the woods as she turned cartwheels and so enjoyed being with her dad. I most enjoy his quirky sense of fun and also enjoy his fishing expeditions and also camping with Joe Robinet.
Yes I agree Doug, when I create a new idea and even have a chuckle about it. I think it will be very popular. But I take it around to markets for a year or more before I find someone who buys it. So long as I am happy with it that’s ok.
Doug Linker has been my favorite teacher for carving. If he has a superpower, it's teaching skills.
Special thanks to Doug
Absolutely! Doug is a big supporter of IAWC
