I just finished carving the little man, he’s coated with Linseed oil, now for my favorite part, the paint. Thanks so much for your excellent tutorials. You’re my go to guy!
Hey Doug my name is Reed Bueche. I live in Louisiana. I love your videos and you and Gene Messer started me carving about 8 months ago and I would like to send you some good basswood I get from a company in West Virginia. Great basswood at a great price. If I could get your address I'll send it to you. It's not much but I really want to thank you for helping me be a carver or whittler I call it. LOL !! I sent Gene some wood and he loved it. He actually sent me a carving for it, which I'll treasurer forever . Thanks again !!!
Doug, I hope you don't think there is "horrible retention" because we watch the longer tutorials in chunks. I've been carving for a couple of years now as a hobby largely thanks to you! My first carving was at age 76. I've carved a hill billy chess set, three nativity sets (folksy style), a men's choir (thanks to idea from Gene Messer), and most of the carvings you graciously taught via your tutorials. I like to watch your tutorial for a few minutes then stop and do some carving of my own. I am much slower than you! I suspect that the data you are reviewing that suggests tutorials are not popular or fully appreciated is false. In any event, I love your long tutorials and hope you will continue them. Thanks again for the best carving tutorials I have seen.
I second that! I’m a 61 year old newbie carver thanks to Doug! My procedure is similar to yours. Watch a few minutes of the tutorials, then pause it and catch up, then repeat until the project is completed.
Woow love it, justed starting in carving and you are my mentor. First one was so bad hahahahaa, but getting better. Keep your good work. Thks for your tutorial.
I got the little man painted following every step of your video and it turned great. I have been learning from you for the last 6 months or so and people say my carvings are getting better. I owe it all to you. You’re an excellent instructor. Thank you very much for your excellent videos.
I said it once I said 100,000 times excellent carving skills and simplistic instructions on how to do things You and the Mis and the little ones have a great day
Wasn't going to watch this, thinking "I know how to paint!". But I'm so very glad I did. Thanks for sharing. Now to whittle something to try what I learned...
Please let the old videos up. It's nothing wrong with these. They only show a different technique. Nice to see you carve again. I love your little guys. Maybe you could show to carve a little cowboy. This could be a nice project.
I guess im asking the wrong place but does someone know of a trick to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb lost my account password. I would love any help you can offer me
really enjoy your videos.i watched a documentary about grinling gibbons ( a seventeenth century wood carver )and was inspired to carve and found your channel to learn .i have a project at the moment of carving a viking but on the end of a length of wood that will act like a fishing float so when i put it into the sea he will just look like hes standing on the surface ,thats the theory .but my favourite is carving small bears and painting them gold and leaving them around my local park for the kids to find .
I do the same thing on day hikes. I’ll hike in to a campsite (usually on the Uwharrie National Recreation trail in NC), spend the morning carving, cook lunch, finish carving, then leave whatever I carved in a conspicuous place and hike out. Really enjoy doing that!
Love all of your carvings Doug. And ideas. I’ve discovered you during my last year of college, just before the covid period. So also for all the covid period, when i was preparing my college degree thesis, you were my “afternoon mate”. Always with you on my ears while i was following your tutorial. For me, you can also show us similar projects that I will ALWAYS follow them, because I love ti improve and doing your projects. If you will upload 100 similar gnomes carving videos, I will carve 100 similar gnomes. No problem. Just love for all what you do. Thank you a lot. And now that I’m stuck because i broke my achilles tendon, you are my daily mate 😄 god bless you Doug!
Just finished making this fabulous little man and enjoyed every minute of it ! Couldn't have done it without your amazing tutorial Doug. Thanks very much.
Doug - just watched your story video from a couple years back and wanted to say thank you! Love my new hobby, wish I'd found it years ago too. Keep the vids coming, so helpful.
Well done and very helpful. I started my adventure in carving yesterday. I’m excited about the carvings I can do once I get enough training from experts like yourself. Thank you.
I’ve used a sheet of glass on my hobby work table for years. I lay a piece of white paper under it for visibility, and build models, small wood projects, tie flies etc. on it. Blobs of paint, wood glue, super glue etc. can be left to dry, and be easily scraped off with a razor blade scraper! The same glass has been on my table for 25+ years. Tempered glass is the preferred type to use
Thanks Doug for leaving the old vid up. Very nice results on this carving, can't wait for Wensday. Just for the guys in the states. You can get "Howards feed and wax" at lowes.
Hey Doug, great painting tutorial. I really like the plexiglass idea to. Very easy cleaned up. I can’t wait until Wednesday.I have been wandering about other wood sealers to use. Thanks again for another great video.
Doug, thank you for these wonderful UA-cams. You inspired me at age 71 to take up wood carving 4 months ago and I've completed around 50 projects, including 23 simple Santas. What is the detail pen you used to paint the eyes and smaller areas? Thanks so much!
Looks great Doug. i gave this guy a try and for me it turned out ok. not near as good as yours but for my first try not bad. keep up the great work!!!!
Hi Doug, I have gotten behind on getting to see your videos, so I just watched this one. The paint job is awesome, the colors look good together and that school bus yellow hair is the bomb. I bought some of the Howard's Feed n Wax and I cant wait to try it , along with your new painting technics. Thanks Doug for always sharing and Happy Easter to you and your family.
Love the videos Doug! Thank you! Here's a carving idea for you .... based on "Supply Run" and "Trip to the Sea". How about a Doug-version of an Ojibwa, Algonquin, Cree or Iroquois paddler in a "birchbark (looking) canoe" ... the carving of and their adventure down the river?? Oh, also... do you need to keel weight the little boats, or do they stay upright naturally? Cheers!
Great video, but is that okay to use water based acrylic paint over linseed oil? Does not the paint peal off? I assume it does not. But this video is very helpful, thank you. 😊
Doug is there a different non-flammable sealer you can use prior to painting with acrylics, instead of Lindseed oil? ooops....nevermind, I see you mentioned another oil in your "paint the pumpkin head" video :)
Doug are you going to do a video on the New Gnome? It's in the same style as the Little Man. If not can you share any details or measurements? Your videos are the best.
Doug, Love your videos, I don’t recall ever seeing you work on a modern woman/girl. The classes I’ve taken with Harley and others either do older women or just men, therefore my collection of carving contain no women/girls that I can give away to the younger ladies in my world!
thanks for another great video :-) I have a question: You use linseed oil and acrylpaint (waterbased) and final the beewax. I have tried somthing like that, but I experience that the waterbased paint don’t work with oil and the paint goes off in the final step - waxing. Maybe I am doing it in a wrong order? Is it like this: 1. oil + 2. waterbased paint = succes ? 1. Waterbased paint + 2. oil = no succes ?
where did you get the idea of the gnome bird feeder? could you show how you done it? I like challenges, I am a beginner and loving it, You have inspired me. Keep it up with the videos and tutorials. Thank You
Hey Doug, you do a great job on all your projects! The first video of yours I ever saw was the "Five Minute Wizard" and I loved trying it and then I got into the hobby. I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on how to carve the bear you did in the chainsaw carving you made a few years ago? You don't have to if you don't want but I think it would be fun!
Drat you Doug Linker! I was enjoying the video (actually the whole thing) until you said Tan Shoes.I've been humming that blasted song ever since. You might not remember but "tan shoes and pink shoelaces a polka dot vest and" etc. LOL Dodie Stevens? Chordettes? Getting old and can't remember. Anyway. Interesting video. Thanks.
Great tutorial; however, I do have a question. At 8:10 you say, "I like to do with a darker color around the light colors so that if I slop light colors over in the dark, the dark will cover." Does that mean you like to do the light color first, followed by the dark color? If that's the case, if you slop dark into the light, won't the dark color overpower the light color already applied? WAIT... I think I understand now after I started keyboarding this out. You mean if you slop the lighter color over into the area that WILL be painted darker, once you paint the darker color it will hide the lighter color that was accidentally slopped into the planned darker area. It seemed confusing when I first heard it, now it makes perfect sense. The artist just has to be careful not to slop the darker color into the already painted light colored area. Maybe my confusion and understanding will help another viewer. I really like your finishing videos, they've given me some great ideas for improving my finishing process!!!
@@dougLinker Just made mi first chicken yesterday i will save it to see how well i progress ,ive some basswood coming cant wait to try out your stuff ,i know it will take time but worth the effort keep on carving, oh i did ask on another comment whether you could do a dragon as its wales national symbol id like to see yo tackle one please.
The most peaceful video ever.
A master with the knife and brush. Very well done. Sir.

Thank you.. I am an artist and I would not have diluted the craft paint.. Thanks for the oiling info.

I love that Feed-N-Wax! Gives a nice finish as you mention :)
Great video Doug...thanks for sharing! And I agree, leave the old videos up, I still go back and look at those every now and then. It all helps!

Outstanding work and look. You're upping your game, Doug. Thanks for the push. Cheers.
Great video. Like the little guy good carve. Yes fan of linseed oil! 👍
Thanks Doug for making this vid
You may try using gesso instead of linseed oil as underpainting.
Love the new look with the bees wax.looks really nice.good stuff keep the videos coming.Really enjoy your wedsday video too.
Doug you should try shellac for a sealer. Use a thin mixture say 50-50, It will dry in just minutes ready to paint. David
always love them my friend ... just keep teaching these great lessons and your the best
Thank you , Mr Doug .

hey Doug what's your recipe for mixing an getting flesh tones?
Doug, can you glue two pieces of wood stock together, carve it, and then paint it, and it look alright?
Great video, but is that okay to use water based acrylic paint over linseed oil? Does not the paint peal off? I assume it does not. But this video is very helpful, thank you. 😊
