Maybe a dissenting opinion, but I really like when the hatchats do delve a little into politics, especially when important stuff is going on - i think this one was a great example of it working. Didn't get too bleak, just a bit of a discussion then back to the silly stuff. Really enjoyable.
Why isn't he Earl Binface? Still find it stunning what a difference turnout and split can be. Labour vote total actually dropped from the last election and won a landslide.
I agree that the members content is lacking, although they haven't had any long-running series recently where they can have extended cuts. They're filming episode 1 of the croco-campaign tomorrow, I believe, so we have that to look forward to, at least.
Stargate SG-1, the best show ever made, started in 97, though admittedly it didn't really find its footing until season 3 so it's arguably more of a 2000s show... so Smith may very well be right about the 90s sucking.
I don't think it matters what people want to hear regarding politics. We live on a planet where everything is going sideways QUICK FAST AND IN A HURRY and we're going to talk about it whether people like it or not. Which I suppose is the trap of neoliberalism, but it's so strange to see someone exude such a sponge-like quality for propaganda and 'you are not immune to propaganda' at the same time. 2. Stance on Russia. Whatever you say, they had a casus belli to invade (in the threat posed by NATO), and this is a just war from a political POV. The condemnation of russia for defending itself against the push eastward of it's enemy, but total silence on the conflicts- FUCKING CATASTROPHES- caused by military coups, or by definitively fascist Isreal, is also strange. 3. Condemning only an uneducated liberal's idea of 'fascism' yet ignoring existing- real- fascists. 4. General 'do your own research' attitude while not doing his own. I don't care if it's on the BBC, Al Jazeera, RT, or NYT. Everything you're told by any media organization is crafted (whether by the individuals involved, or the organization) to make you think and feel a certain way. He thinks he has some sort of 'fringe' political opinions but they're really not. They're only fringe if your perception of politics is limited to what you believe. I think he'd really enjoy doing some polisci. Honestly, if you haven't been educated in politics (Or even just in the area being discussed), you can't have an opinion. If someone does have an opinion without being educated, all they have to defend that position is ego, as shitty as that sounds.
I havent watched Hat Chat in a while, but have caught the last three or so. Does Smith steer EVERY chat into politics or miserable world garbage? Makes it such a slog to listen through.
Thanks for the heads up. I've actually been less inclined to watch hatfilms lately because it so often turns into a miserable conversation about the very things I'm watching fun gaming videos to escape. I've been a fan since ftb but jeez.
Smith seems to have swallowed the media narrative, Socialism is one thing but the Green party are commies. I remember how fucking ill informed he was on Covid too, I like Smithy but I don't agree with the majority of his beliefs and that is okay because I love Hat Films.
