Mariah is probably my favorite user of vocal agility. The best runs and riffs are the ones that u don’t even notice, it’s something about that subtlety. To the community who adores singer singer and vocalists, Beyonce is very well appreciated talent. However, this community is not the majority and most people still think Beyonce is just an entertainer, not a real vocalist which is saddening.
That part! Beyoncé probably has the broadest skillset regarding her agility. She’s just able to do so much like incorporating Arabic scales, riffing through different dynamic modes, fast transitions etc. One of the queens of riffs
Mariah's strength (especially in her prime) was being able to do her runs so subtle that it sounded natural rather than showing off even though she was doing runs every other word she sang.
I like how you use "mindful" to describe Mariah's use of agility. It's probably of the best descriptors out there. I've always had this unexplained feeling about her approach to riffing. And I think mindful is the word for that. By listening to her, she's taught me a thing or two about singing which greatly influenced me as someone who's fond of singing. Riffs don't always have to be the fastest or most complex or placed in every line. The best riffs are those that complement the melody.
mariah, beyoncé, tori kelly. they know how to sound good. riffing is not only about showcasing vocal agility, it has a melody itself and should be well composed.
The key to executing runs and rifts is knowing where to place them. Mariah Carey is definitely the Queen of this. Gospel singer Kim Burrell is definitely a vocal agility Queen as well. I think Beyonce, and Tori Kelly are very strategic when it comes to their runs and riffs. Jennifer Hudson can actually do runs and riffs, but she doesn't showcase it all the time. In order to hear her do a run or a riff, is hear her singing gospel. I remember when she did the American Idol tour her and Latoya London sung dangerously in love and Jen mimicked Beyonce melisma perfectly. Running and riffs aren't everything of coarse but when used right it can add a lil spice to the song.
Agility is the seasoning of singing. You don’t need to be an expert at it to be a great vocalist, as proven by legendary vocalists like Lara and Barbra. However, it is an indeed strong plus to the expertise of a vocalist. Great video! P.S- Agreed that there can not possibly be an agility video if Mariah, the king of agility is not included.
I've always preferred Mariah's riffs & runs, solely just because of the ear candy of her seemingly effortless ease in switching from chest to falsetto to chest again and then to whistle and then back again and then some. But Christina, Tori, John Legend, and Beyonce are also among my favorites.
Yes, the truth is that he abuses a lot of it ... sometimes the same thing happens to me when I listen to tori kelly ... that they abuse his gift too much
So far only Mariah sounds very natural to me. It doesn't sound a decoration, it is the music in itself. I dunno how to explain it but something like that.
This is how I feel about Tori, her riffs have become such a natural part of her voice and the way she sings that I tend to miss some of them if I don’t pay enough attention
It's because Mariah's riffs are poppy, it's not even hard to copy (only if you know how to riff) it doesn't sound riff because when you riff it should sounds like how Beyonce does it. I think the only riff that Mariah impresses me is the song lead the way.
*To be honest,* in addition to the sheer strength of one's skill in this area, it boils down to tastefulness & musicality (for me). *Mariah & Tori Kelly* excel at this 👑 So glad you highlighted this! That's something many singers don't have, especially now that it's become kinda trendy to do riffs and runs (rampant on social media). People out here riffing and running but don't know their destination. - _Navigation has also left the chat_ *P.S.* For the new generation, Faouzia is really one to watch out for ✨
I love riffs and runs tbh. I personally think Avery Wilson has the best vocal agility I've ever heard. He blows me away. I personally love the lead the way riff. Only Mariah can come up with something like that.
I love Avery as he has amazing ability, but he’s definitely an overriffer. It’s just too much, every phrase of the song he has to do a quick scale or something of that sort. It’s repetitive and a bit annoying IMO
Musicality has always been Tori's greatest musical asset which is why her runs aren't overdone which is also why she does good covers of songs. And we saw that in her quarantea series where she takes song requests, some of which she probably hasn't heard or practiced for years, but still sings them great anyway. Its amazing how she picks a request, searches for the chords, sings the song easily, and still applies her spin to the song and it's not just one song she did at least 5-10 songs in one live session!
For real, the spontaneity of all her covers on instagram live always just amazes me. I can’t fathom being so good that 1) you’re able to sight-read the chords perfectly in real time as you’re singing 2) come up with your own vocal arrangement of the songs including your own riffs and runs on the spot.. WHO DOES THAT? 🤯
Finally you include Carrie Underwood in one of your videos!! I am a big fan (currently watching your videos from Dominican Republic), but I have always wondered why Carrie is not on your videos more often. Thank you!!! But mostly, thank you for teaching me a lot about singing and voice and aristry in general.
Mariah's musical interpretation for Over the Rainbow is just simply amazing. This is a classic, and she made her own and sounds great! And of course her riffs and runs!
3 things: - Brian McKnight is the king of vocal runs. Period. - Vocal agility is the only weak spot of Lara Fabian, and I would not complain about that. Because she excels at everything else. - I'm surprised that Demi Lovato was not included as an example of sloppy messy runs, with which she can always make me laugh.
True. Demi's older performances have EXTREMELY messy riffs and runs. Demi has improved on those now, however. Dancing with the Devil has extremely difficult riffs which Demi has excelled in executing in all live performances of the song.
@@varunravi27 I haven't watched her performances lately. But whenever I feel sad, I go back to her live performance of "Get back" in 2018 for some good laughs. Gosh, her runs in that performance should forever be used as a grand example of "messy runs". 😂
I think Ariana has improved a lot, like really a lot, especially in her agility. It sounds more organized, more textures, and beautiful. Her musicality is definitely getting better. We stan our Queen Ariana too 👑👑
Ari is a jack of all trades. She can do pretty much everything with her voice, from broadway, pop, rnb, jazz and has a very good control throughout her whole range while having a unique edge from her peers such as her whistle register, but she's not really the best of anything. That's why i think people are hesitant to put her beside the other vocal legends.
@@fartyfat6539 Morsette Amon could give Ariana a run for her money especially with Mariah covers as she can also do whistle register. So when it comes to whistle, Ari is not set apart from Tori or Morsette. And you’re right ppl overrate her sometimes which I why I wish Tori and Morsette were more famous
@@lessismore8533 I ain't see anyone bringing up Morisette and Tori here :/,Only Arianators are overrating her but when it comes to people she's heavily criticized Tori and Morisette are already getting the praised they deserved So your comment is irrelevant 😐
Mariah's runs are at lightning speed - It's like your hear something beautiful in her singing, and could not seem to know what that is, even if you try to replicate. Then you resort to listen closely and carefully - that's when you hear the intricate runs she so artfully yet subtly weaves into the main melody of the song. They are like ornamental birds and flowers of the song, every coos and sighs and whispers are nuanced expression of emotions. No one tops her on this because it's musicality and not theatricality, not meant to impress but express.
I've recently come to the realization that supposed "communicative" singing, or singing that's otherwise described as "lyrical sincerity" is often from the perspective of western, anglo-centric criticism and completely ignores the history of black music and how runs and embellishments are integral to communicating emotion and lyrical intent. Why is it that runs in music are often considered "indulgent" and "acrobatic" when it can service the music in such a powerful way?
Mariah is the indisputable Queen of riffs and runs, not only for the unmatched agility and fluidity but also for the creativity and the perfect placement, the musicality behind her runs can't be touched at all. Mariah doesn't use runs to show her agility, they are often so fast that they go unnoticed but are literally an integral part of the song and melody, she riffs almost every word when she sings. You couldn't tell how many notes she hit even when she belt, especially in her prime. You caught the belt but not the runs.
I wish there could have been some inclusion of the gospel artist that influenced most of these artists such as Karen Clark Sheard and Kim Burrell. Alot of these agile singing comes from the black traditional gospel experience.
Riffs and Runs comes from the church. Most modern music comes from the church gospel singing and music. Mariah herself listens to The Clark Sisters. I love Mariah bc her vocals brings me back to church. Full of soul.
You all may call Lara Fabian’s melisma sloppy but when it comes to sustained and straight tone, she reigns supreme. She makes me love a sustained note without vibrato.
When I hear Tori do runs, I just wanna throw a shoe at her! But when I hear Mariah, I just wanna slingshot the moon at her 😂😂😂 Stupidly good! Tha Queen! She and Tori encapsulated the meaning of riffs and runs without wavering off the melody of the song ♥️
I think one of mariahs best asset is being able to come up with a riff in her mind and replicate it precisely with her voice. What she hears in her mind is what she sings. A very good ear-mind-chords coordination. This combined with her impeccable musicality is probably the reason why her runs/riffs are so great.
She rarely does riffs that include too high mixed belts so I think it should be fine, she knows what's her strengths clearly tho. It's funny because 2 of her most iconic riffs are from Don't you worry bout a thing and Nobody Love, and they both have high mixed notes. I would still enjoy her riffs just as much without those high belts tho, her seamless transitions between register is already super impressive
@@laramiaizz I feel like she likes using falsetto really much, maybe it fits her style more? Idk I think her ability to do complicated riffs from chest to falsetto or just falsetto alone is quite great. And her falsetto sounds really good too. Maybe the note A5 in "Hollow" live version (don't remember which one) is the closest one to good head voice, but I think she just doesn't feel the need to use head voice with her singing now
@@laramiaizz But I've heard some crazy head voice notes from her with some pretty good control all the way up to F#6!! (yes headvoice) so maybe its consistency in that area.

I’m surprised by the lack of beyonce in this video. Her musicality is insane like I don’t think she’s done a distasteful run since like the early 2000’s
Though Jessie J is definitely an overriffer, I find her to be much less overbearingly so that most of her peers. She sometimes gets kinda goofy with her melisma, but in a good way, so it feels playful to me more than it feels distasteful. ( That performance with Luke James though... that was not it )
Mariah's agility and musicality is untouchable, the perfect placement of the runs, the creativity. agile in every part of her voice, even in the lower register, even when she belt in the upperchest, in whistle register, runs, trills, appoggiatura, octaves jump. Everything and more
Mariah is my most favorite melismatic singer. Every run she does just fits right in the melody so well and even in the rare times she overdoes it it still sounds good 😆

Tori Kelly's agility is so underrated. Like I've never heard her oversing. All of her riffs and runs are always on point, and she knows when to do them and how it's done.
Definitely not underrated. Her agility is like Mariah's whistles, and Whitney mid belts. When most people hear her name, agility is the first thing that comes to mind vocally.

Yes, I think that requires quite a lot of live performance research, they are 3x times more demanding than her studio versions imo. A lot of added riffs, belts, growls etc. And he is not very familiar with zara's stuff, I think , he's only mentioned her once, but complimented her agility (rightfully so)
Bryant McKnight melisma were sooooooo musical. It was always well placed very tasteful. And never too much. Whitney's also. They both were top tier musical and judicial with it. John Legend i appreciate his as well....
The Queen of sloppy, try-hard, poorly executed runs is definitely Demi Lovato. It's crazy too, because that's a skill that Demi has been actively using and trying to craft since the very dawn of her career. She still hasn't come to terms with the fact that vocal agility on that level just isn't in her wheelhouse.
thats a bit rude, but i agree. that's what i've been saying since forever. the problem with demi is they don't realize their own limit. thats why there's quite a lot of footage of them failed to hit certain note or melisma. i rather have them do a simple but tasteful riffs like Ariana, instead of pushing themself. edit: correcting their pronounce.

@Motown Gayes Absolutely not a single person ever says taylor or aaliyah beat beyonce vocally, you completely made that up
Lara Fabian's face while singing Vision of Love LMAOOOOOOOOO
Mariah's strength (especially in her prime) was being able to do her runs so subtle that it sounded natural rather than showing off even though she was doing runs every other word she sang.
She still does that now. Mariah still knows how to eat a song
@@TheArtofBeingReacts she’s not quite as agile as she used to be although she has her moments.
@@Solo-vh9fm I suppose😊👍🏾
12:33 You can tell she was trying HARD not to run in that clip 😭😭😭
@Motown Gayes LOL well said. Yes Jennifer can be agile when she wants to be. You mostly hear it when she sings gospel.
@Motown Gayes Yes I’ve been saying that! Black ppl love our runs 😭
Tori the queen of runs of this generation. 😄
@@Sim0sama of this generation? Yes definitely.
Kim Burrell is unmatched in the melisma department.
The question is when are the two musical geniuses Mariah Carey and Tori Kelly singing together?!
I need Tori to play Mariah in her biopic. She is the only person who can make justice to her songs.
@@MeltAwayRiah And she’s biracial too so she’s not taking anything away from Mariah if they cast her. Perfect fit!
Mariah is Geniuse? come on 😄
@@Dino-su2wh no. She's a genius
Jessie J ABUSES of her talent too damn much, I feel exhausted everytime I listen/watch her lol
Just like christina
Try watching some of her more recent performances (maybe around 2017 onwards), she actually doesn't oversing often nowadays!
Yes, the truth is that he abuses a lot of it ... sometimes the same thing happens to me when I listen to tori kelly ... that they abuse his gift too much
She has overcome that
So far only Mariah sounds very natural to me. It doesn't sound a decoration, it is the music in itself. I dunno how to explain it but something like that.
I agree, it's not like she's "riffing", but the riffs just blend into the song, becoming an integral part of the performance
This is how I feel about Tori, her riffs have become such a natural part of her voice and the way she sings that I tend to miss some of them if I don’t pay enough attention
Do preach
It's because Mariah's riffs are poppy, it's not even hard to copy (only if you know how to riff) it doesn't sound riff because when you riff it should sounds like how Beyonce does it. I think the only riff that Mariah impresses me is the song lead the way.
Mariah inspired so many great artists and they are proud of that, Tori Kelly is one of them
*To be honest,* in addition to the sheer strength of one's skill in this area, it boils down to tastefulness & musicality (for me).
*Mariah & Tori Kelly* excel at this 👑
So glad you highlighted this!
That's something many singers don't have, especially now that it's become kinda trendy to do riffs and runs (rampant on social media).
People out here riffing and running but don't know their destination.

*P.S.* For the new generation, Faouzia is really one to watch out for ✨
@Motown Gayes If you're on tiktok yes it's always been a trend
@Motown Gayes definitely
I love how you are always giving Faouzia her flowers 🥺
lmfao thats a super funny analogy
I love riffs and runs tbh. I personally think Avery Wilson has the best vocal agility I've ever heard. He blows me away. I personally love the lead the way riff. Only Mariah can come up with something like that.
Whenever I hear him, he reminds me of Jessie J. Not as heavily overriffing as her but he too tends to overridden.
I love Avery as he has amazing ability, but he’s definitely an overriffer. It’s just too much, every phrase of the song he has to do a quick scale or something of that sort. It’s repetitive and a bit annoying IMO
@@onedollarbleach6891 yep. Whenever they riff, is like to show off. Their melismas never feel like a part of the song
Jazmine Sullivan is the definition of ART!
@@Das644 I think Jessie J has learned some restraint in the past few years.
The fact that you included Jojo here. It's nice to see her being recognized.
6:09 OKAY SIS ( MORISSETTE ) !!! And CELINE and ARETHA, TORI KELLY, ARIANA, PERRIE, JADE, MIMI, J.HUD and LARA FIBIAN❤❤❤
Mariah's musical interpretation for Over the Rainbow is just simply amazing. This is a classic, and she made her own and sounds great! And of course her riffs and runs!
I watch that over and over. Sis took it to church with that one! Heavenly
3 things:
- Brian McKnight is the king of vocal runs.

Yes Jojos always been underrated

Brandy has entered the chat as one of my favorite runners of all time!
Mariah, Xtina & Tori are the queen of their generation. So far they have the most intricate and clean execution of riffs.
The best are Karen Clark sheared, Whitney, brandy and Jazmine. They are so influenctial. People copy them all the time and don't even realize it.
Not Mariah?
That is funny though bc Mariah says that she listened and learned from The Clark Sisters.
Add Vanessa Bell Armstrong and Aretha Franklin to that list.
Aretha Franklin is the queen of soul for a reason: study how & why she is the master of riffs & runs by listening to her gospel records.
Kudos to another amazing video, bro! 💖
Mariah's runs sounds so natural yet so hard when you tried to copy it.
What makes Mariah and Tori riffs are special, they're unrepetitive, they're so complex scaling up and down the notes.

@@sebb5802 Oh wait I just saw ''pop music'' in the title lmfao ur right my bad
No she's not better than Tori. But she may be at Mariahs level tho.
For me I don't think Brandy has a better agility and riffs & runs than Tori, but she definitely inspired Tori.
@@sebb5802 she’s definitely at par with Mariah no doubts about it at all, better than Tori too
Mariah's runs are at lightning speed - It's like your hear something beautiful in her singing, and could not seem to know what that is, even if you try to replicate.

Amen. R&B and blues and everything else is from gospel roots.
Mariah said herself that she listens to The Clark Sisters.❤
Riffs and Runs comes from the church. Most modern music comes from the church gospel singing and music. Mariah herself listens to The Clark Sisters. I love Mariah bc her vocals brings me back to church. Full of soul.
You all may call Lara Fabian’s melisma sloppy but when it comes to sustained and straight tone, she reigns supreme. She makes me love a sustained note without vibrato.
100% my favorite area of vocal technique. I learned how to riff by copying tori kelly (mostly, but other people too)… she really is a vocal gem 😔😔

What I love the most about Xtina's agility is that it's very creative and stylish. Her artistry is just heavenly.
I think one of mariahs best asset is being able to come up with a riff in her mind and replicate it precisely with her voice. What she hears in her mind is what she sings. A very good ear-mind-chords coordination. This combined with her impeccable musicality is probably the reason why her runs/riffs are so great.
Half of these are inspired by Mariah. Really a sent from up above

If only Tori improves her mix. She sounds screechy and strained most of the times when she goes higher..
She rarely does riffs that include too high mixed belts so I think it should be fine, she knows what's her strengths clearly tho. It's funny because 2 of her most iconic riffs are from Don't you worry bout a thing and Nobody Love, and they both have high mixed notes.
