Lexus UX Car Review 2019 - Is it unique in the crowded segment?

- One of the market's most profitable segments at present is that for premium-branded mid-sized SUVs of the more compact sort. Lexus is a late-comer to this sector but in characteristic style, has brought something different to it in the form of this UX model.

The UX competes directly against cars like the Volvo XC40, the Jaguar E-PACE, the Audi Q3, the BMW X1 and the Mercedes GLA. The angular Lexus NX, which previously represented the company against rivals such as these, has been repositioned a little further up-market as an alternative to slightly larger medium-sized models (think Audi Q5s and BMW X3s).
So, does the UX stand a chance against such an army of fiercely talented competitors? Well the looks are certainly a little different to what's on offer elsewhere in this sector - and so is the powertrain, a non-Plug-in petrol/electric hybrid. Lexus believes that over 80% of buyers will never have owned one of the company's products before. Will they like this one? Let's find out.
Driving Experience
The UX is the first Lexus to be constructed using its brand's latest GA-C global architecture platform, which offers gains in torsional rigidity that enable this car to be far more nimble and driver-orientated than the company's previous compact model offering, the CT200h. The platform also enables the UX to have the lowest centre of gravity of any vehicle in its class. It's surprisingly light for a hybrid too, thanks to weight-saving measures in the body construction, including the use of lightweight aluminium for the side doors, wings and bonnet, as well as a resin material for the back door.
To start with, just a single UX 250h petrol/electric non-Plug-in hybrid variant is being offered, a car which uses its brand's fourth generation hybrid electric system that features a redesigned 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine and an electronic continuously variable transmission CVT auto transmission. It's available both with front-wheel drive and with Lexus's E-Four AWD system. The engine output is 176bhp, enough to take the car to 62mph in about 8.5s en route to around 110mph. In development, particular efforts were made to reduce any "rubber band" effect in the operation of the hybrid system and transmission, by optimising the level of electric motor assistance and engine rpm to generate a sense of linear acceleration without the engine running at high revs.
Does this look like an SUV to you? For us, it's more of a family hatch than it is any kind of crossover - but maybe that's just the point. Lexus is trying to blur the boundaries here to make movement into this car from, say, a BMW 1 Series or an Audi A3 that much easier. From a stylistic point of view, the Japanese brand says that its aim with the UX wasn't to conform to the established, solid crossover look, but to achieve a strong and stylish silhouette that was more distinctive and dynamic. This design approach can be seen in the way the front and rear wings flare strongly outwards in relation to the car's basic form, which flows out from the lines of the spindle grille to envelop the cabin. At the front, the arrangement of the headlights and the spindle grille are incorporated into a deep, strong shape created by the hood and bumper to try and generate a sense of security. At the rear, a condensed styling treatment contrasts sharply with the flared wings to try and emphasise the UX's crossover qualifications.
The UX measures 4,495mm long, 1,520mm high and 1,840mm wide and has a 2,640mm wheelbase. An 870mm couple distance ensures ample space for rear seat passengers in the surprisingly roomy cabin. The instrument panel has a low, unobtrusive design and the slim A-pillar mouldings have been shaped to improve visibility and give the kind of commanding outward view that is expected of a crossover. Out back, the load area is a generous 791mm long.

Would you consider a Lexus UX?
OSV Yes
considering one right now lol
Bought one
@@YvesEnBart drove one; great suspension and handling !!! BUT it had the wrong engine; the 2.0 without Hybrid and that´s a NoGo. Perhaps the UX 300electric is the best choice of them !
It needs the 2.5l hybrid system. I do not want to go back to an underpowered car. Otherwise I like the vehicle.
I feel your making the same mistake many auto reviewers make in putting most emphasis on performance .. the majority of people will never be interested in these things.. comfort and reliability are far more important to the majority of buyers.
Thanks for the helpful feedback, Jason. We'll take this on-board for future reviews 👍
Probably the most comprehensive report that's available on the UX 250.Especially the car comparison which was extremely informative. Brilliant job, well done
That's great to hear, Peter. Many thanks for watching!
There is basically no competition from any western manufacturer for the UX. Lexus is light years ahead of any German manufacturer in the fields of quality control, reliability and hybrid technology.
The fact that people in Europe don't buy Toyota or Lexus is just a cultural thing. They rather pay tens of thousands of euros for fixing their BMWs, Mercedes and Volvos after the warranty expires.
If you're serious about buying a car, the reviews from this channel are simply more relevant, detailed and therefore useful. Thanks for another good review.

Excellent review
Good review. Very informative. Sounds like watching a soccer match.
Very professional review, puts other 'leading' trusted reviewers to shame.

Great car. Love Lexus
Very fair review. Too many reviewers are all-critical or indeed all-glowing.
Amazing review! Are the paddle shifters for the regenerative breaking? every other review says they are to manually shift gears. Or do threy somehow do both? because i currently drive a Honda CRV and the paddels shifters help manually control/operate the regenerative breaking. is UX same in this sense? even somebody at the lexus dealership told me UX f sport paddle shifters are for changing gears. You are the only review who say this about paddle shifters and i hope its true? great job again so much detail
i drive a Lexus RX450h and i use manually downshifting only on steep downhill area when my heavy ship needs more braking in the long run. So this is very usefull for better braking and higher recuperation !!
Love these cars. The attention to detail is exceptional. I don't believe you get the same level of customer support and reliability from any other brand. If you were spending your own cash, Lexus is by far the best overall brand in the luxury car segment.
Glad you like Lexus as much as we do, Phil!
Watching from the US. Although not everything applies, I enjoyed your review. I've owned two RX's but want to downsize. I might consider a UX though it now costs what I paid for a 2015 RX, which are now in the 50-60k range.
Just bought one! looked at Discovery Sport (poor reliability) Alfa Stelvio ( appalling reviews on dealerships-come on Alfa, what are you doing?)
Volvo XC40 (nice but expensive). The whole experience at the dealership in Leeds was fantastic. An absolute class apart. Already have a SC430 which I have traded in as I want to go "greener". What a car the UX is-oozes quality. Will be a keeper for me. For the complete car buying experience get down to a Lexus dealer. Even if you don't end up buying one you will be treated like royalty.
That's great to hear, Jim. Enjoy your new car!
Stelvio and Giulia are both wonderful driver's car, quality seems to be great to (considering the reputation), but those dealerships are killing the brand. Unfortunately that means I am also driving a Toyota and a Lexus as opposed to an Alfa Romeo -- which pains my heart.
I like how this guy makes the illusion of multi camera recording. Ha-ha.
This is the "To infinity and beyond" review 😂👍🏻
Mine is on order for August, test drove the car yesterday and was absolutely blown away. Test drove a CT a few weeks back and that was fabulous too but as they are discontinuing that model, very few are available.
That's great news, we hope you enjoy your new car! What made you choose the Lexus UX?
@@OsvUkVehicleSupply IMHO, the best car available for my budget, Very quiet, very economical, environmentally friendly and a dash/instrument panel that is superior to the new Mercedes 'A' class (my current car circa 2017).
@@mobiusklein9140 That's great to hear. Thank you for watching!
I assume the e-cvt in the Lexus is the same as in the Toyota. If it is then it doesn't have a belt. It's a series of planetary gears.
Yes, correct. This reviewer as good as he is at this, seems to get confused about the mechanics of these CVTs. The ECVT works so much better than a belt driven setup, although im a fan of both.
Ive had a CVT Subaru Outback and you do need to understand how the CVT is designed to operate to get the best out of them. I like CVTs for the smoothness, I never needed to floor the accelerator to make good progress, its all about matching revs to engine speed. This Lexus looks a great car.
You dont need to use the track pad as just about everything is available by speech recognition. Just press the button on the steering wheel to activate. The eco dial can be changed for a permanent rev counter.
151 BHP petrol engine + 30 BHP electric motor. 53 MPG. Its great!
We bought it, we love it!
Fantastic news, Jim! What do you love most about your UX?
Belt driven automatic transmission?! Where??
After watching this review I know this car better than I know myself

i like my DVD player in my LExus ! ....its nice to look some films with Mark Levinson surround sound when on a rest !!
@ekim andersom i dont even use a shit smartphone :-) !!
The Lexus will run at least three times longer than any of those competitors mentioned 🤣🤣🤣
An incredibly detailed review, Articulate and erudite presentation, thank you.

If you consider the reliability aspect it’s a no brainer compared to its European counterparts
Lexus is definitely up there when it comes to reliability.
Compares to an Audi Q3 and not a Q2, why?
indeed yes ! i drove that UX and its more the size of a Q2 and compared to this the UX is far better !
@ekim andersom enough for me, enough for many others......90% of the drive times trunks are empty , lol
What is it with Toyota/Lexus with no android auto or apple car play or door bins.
EU Licensing issues which have now been resolved - android auto and apple carplay will be available via software update within 6 months
I was listening via bluetooth and thought John Oliver was taking
Want a reliable car from the same company, a lot less money, same engineering, more space..... Corolla fastback (estate).
Please, please, please, please, please - stop saying "belt driven" eCVT - it is not, never has been and never will be belt driven. This is not a Daf Daffodil from the 1960s. A planetary gearbox sat between 2 electric motors, not hard to understand or say.
Which? says, counter to your description, that the emissions of the UX are 'worrying'.
Why oh why do you reviewers always moan about how difficult it is to use the infotainment system? It’s so easy. Just use voice commands! Say -“bbc radio 2”, “turn up volume” and on the satnav just say “take me to Cheltenham” and it sets up the route. Please try it and upgrade your review. accordingly. .
We had a Lexus ct200 from new , got rid of it after 3yrs, the ctv did my head in
Why? I am driving cvt for over twenty years, and fully happy...
Wicher Bos no guts in the engine to over take , you put your foot down & you get more noise than acceleration. Also it was a totally uncomfortable car
@@scotiajinker8392 Why buy a CT200h then? Should have got an IS - sounds like a case of not test driving a vehicle before buying than anything wrong with the actual product
Scotia Jinker...did you even bother to research this car then? It makes use of a gear and CVT to eliminate the effect you’re talking about.
Rayaan Shaikh we drove the car around for an hour or so on a test drive, but living with the car was a different story. It was my wife’s run around car.

Spoke to a Lexus salesman the other day he said they are NOT selling.
Cityoftrees1911 40k for top spec, no thanks
@@MartinHannett_ i wonder what will happen to their resale value down the road. I never see them on the road.
Cityoftrees1911 They hold value really well, even the ugly old RXs still fetch good money.
Thats a very popular model though, UX is a niche vehicle thats collecting dust in dealer lots.
Cityoftrees1911 Very popular? You clearly don’t live in Britain 😂.
Good god you can go on and on and on,
So don’t watch it.
@@QatarVegan i dident watch it all i just couldet stand you wittering on and on calm down less id more,
Love your reviews guys but please less of these SUVs
Thanks Kamran 👍 we will be mixing it up again soon
If by Unique you mean underpowered, no utility, slow, CVT whine, fake awd, and the worst user interface in the industry, yes its very "unique".
Blake Swan This whole segment is full of fakes. I have no idea why anyone wants to buy this kind of underpowered, overweight, semi-agricultural looking, lumpily styled non-utility vehicle. It is far from unique. Nearly all its competitors are equally poorly conceived - though possibly not quite so well constructed.
@@patrickhay8079 well all the competition has atleast a 200hp Turbo engine option and off er way more space. The competition is not anywhere near as port of a product offering as Lexus. I know old people think Lexus is God but you need to shop more and actually leaver the Toyota parking lot
Blake Swan Who on earth would want 200bhp in a wallowing, rolling, lumpen brick?
2019 Hyundai Santa Fe Blows it away for less $$$$$$
Bextar636 Maybe, but it looks like a brick and drives like a bus (or maybe vice versa). All these non sport, non utility carts use more fuel than they need to, cost more than they should, and deliver a driving experience that borders on cruel abuse.
