The commentators didn't explain this, so if anyone hasn't seen this category before and was wondering why they bothered grabbing the Varia suit after the Kraid fight when they already had the Gravity suit: It's because it halves the damage you take. Without it, they would actually die to the motherbrain beam at the end of phase 2 unless they collected several more energy tanks, which would obviously be slower than grabbing the Varia suit.
Notably, it's only for the Mother Brain laser beam that it matters, for everything else in the game the Gravity suit already reduces damage more than the Varia suit but for some reason not on the laser beam.
I agree that, yes, Varia suit reduces all damage (including Baby Metroid energy drain and Mother Brain 2's rainbow beam) by 50%, while the Gravity suit reduces all damage by 75% _except_ those cases above. Collecting 6 tanks would indeed be much slower than picking up Varia -- good catch, we'll point it out next time :)
IIRC Mother Brain's rainbow beam attack is the only form of damage in the game that isn't affected by the gravity Suit's 75% damage reduction. Therefore, only the Varia suit's 50% damage reduction works on it.
Might be the best Super Metroid run we could have asked for. There was a ton of back and forths. 4 highly skilled players taking advantage of every screw up, taking risks and chances to get ahead. WE had 4 different styles of player, we had different Phantoom rotations, we had 4 different approaches to Baby Skip. 4 completes and Zero deaths. So many variations and kept it tight the whole wqya though. Eddie and Hockey's commentary was perfect, great chemistry between you both, a ton of knowledge being shared quickly and concisely. Kept it HYPE. It couldn't have been clearer that we watched some great friends and leaders of the community having a blast and executing one of the best speed run races any of us could have asked for. Thank all of you for this showcase, I've been looking forward to it for months watching many of you practice and prep for it on your channels. This 45 minute race got us the troll mario level and about $100K in donations. Nothing short of an absolute success. My only sadness is no one gave Char_Bunny any sick rhymes in Donations.
That was like an endurance race where no one crashed out, all pit stops were smooth and seamless, the only thing separating the lead racer from the others was not having to make as many last minute saves from risky maneuvers. If a race like this happened with cars or motorcycles at a race track it would be considered legendary and indeed this was. Great job runners! (I'm going to go be mediocre at video games and track riding motorcycles now in your honor hahaha)
Honestly this was a beautiful race and all four played spectacularly. A couple of people had a close calls on Phantoon and one Draygon fight was super clutch, but it's a treat to see all four racers finishing the game.
great runs from everyone. full display of the Any% tech from each runner. Also, A+ commentary from Eddie and Hockey. What a fun run. SM always gets my blood pumping!
YOOOOO, I got hyped to see TheHockeyTowner was on the mic. I've watched some of the community races. He became my favorite SM caster during a Finals that I cant remember who was racing to save my life right now. I can't remember the runners but I sure remembered him. So I was extra hyped to hear him there casting at a GDQ. This was Quality all the way around.
Oats casually watching end credits as his competitors battle over scraps he left behind. All kidding aside what an amazing race, and shout out to the commentators for amplifying the HYPE, they have the energy and knowledge to keep things extra exciting! Mad respect!
My hairs were on end for this entire race, truly captivating. Fantastic runners, fantastic commentators, so many tight moments and close calls but no deaths! Love this community so much
This was so close. All of these runners are so good they finish within seconds of eachother. Thanks boys, you raised over 70k. Imyt made a ton of progress to close the gap and finished strong. This is always my favorite part of gdq.
EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNING :')))))))))))))))))))))))) I remember when I was just a boy, playing Super Metroid (im 86), and not only being in love with this genius game, but being in a trance whilst in Meridia. The music & trying to explore every single wall and area. Was really something special WOW AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!
What a great race! GG to all four amazing runners. Can I say that when I saw the couch commentary team included HockeyTowner, I literally cheered out loud!
8 years since SM was ran at GDQ? really?! thats insane SM and save /kill is always the peak GDQ hype, what a race. Feel bad for Cutie with that Draygon was making such great moves up till then.
They meant "since an Any% race." It wasn't usually considered very marathon-safe because stopping to save isn't really viable. If you search for "Super Metroid SGDQ 2016" you can find the race - 3 out of 4 of the runners die. it ended up super dramatic, but it'd have been insanely anticlimactic if all 4 died!
I believe it's specifically 8 years since any% was ran at a GDQ, they've showcased other categories like 100% and Reverse Boss Order at events since then. 2022 was the only year without *any* Super Metroid presence from what I can find online.
I agree with all comments. Such a great run. Almost challenging the last big one with Behemoth. Gotta shout out Eddie and especially Hockey Towner for legendary commentary 👌 👏 🙌 👍
What a great race. I usually tend to prefer watching rando races ... but it's insane to also see every once in a while how consistent these people are, also relative to each other when you throw away all the luck elements (well, except phantom?) and just let them do pure vanilla execution.
GDQ should let me compete in one of these races as a normie who can beat the game, but is not at all a speedrunner, just to show how insane these folks are.
3:52 Oh good she DID say my name right. I couldn't hear her cause everyone started cheering when she said it lol. Shoutouts to these announcers who really know what they're doing and how to hype up the events. Good race too, sucks that save the animals won lol

Whoa! Nice add. Had no idea Varia did anything other than environmental support.
Muito técnico, ótima explicação e conhecimento.
Just watched this on Oats' channel and wanted to give it a like a comment here as well. Awesome run. Oats was on FIRE.
Oats is such a clutch performer. Really cool to see all 4 complete. I honestly can't remember the last time I saw all 4 guys go sub 46min.
This needs to be back in at every event. Just mesmerizing.

Awesome run everyone! Super intense and really close call throughout the run! Nice animal-trolling at end by Zeni also hah
Haha, tyckte väl jag såg ett bekant ansikte i youtubekommentarerna 😁
The Best Race ive seen in many years watchging this event. just amazing

Exactly! Great race.
the fourth place guy taking a longer route in the end just to give some more time to the incentive to be met was sastifiyng
Honestly this was a beautiful race and all four played spectacularly.
A couple of people had a close calls on Phantoon and one Draygon fight was super clutch, but it's a treat to see all four racers finishing the game.
ShinyZeni remembered to save the game.
Y’all are great. Fun to watch. Even the commentators are tremendous.
What a show!
Hell of a race. One of the best GDQ races ever.
Super Metroid is my favorite game of all time and a crown jewel of speedrunning and GDQ. Thank you for continuing to show this game!
Oats defeated Zeni what? Amazing!
great runs from everyone. full display of the Any% tech from each runner. Also, A+ commentary from Eddie and Hockey. What a fun run. SM always gets my blood pumping!
This was a fantastic race, some awesome metroid play and the commentators honestly gave it so much hype, always a treat

Great run !!!!!! Congrats to everyone for the amazing clutch hahaha, and shoutouts for THE GOATSTER !!
Great showing, all 4 completing is rare.
Oats casually watching end credits as his competitors battle over scraps he left behind. All kidding aside what an amazing race, and shout out to the commentators for amplifying the HYPE, they have the energy and knowledge to keep things extra exciting! Mad respect!
Oats KILLED it. Congrats on the win, and congrats on the finish to all other racers. Incredible race by these legends!
My hairs were on end for this entire race, truly captivating. Fantastic runners, fantastic commentators, so many tight moments and close calls but no deaths! Love this community so much
For me Super Metroid is the pinnacle of Games Done Quick and speed running. Incredible performance by all players!
Best run in the marathon. Superb commentary and gameplay
Awesome race! Everyone absolutely smashed it
What a blast! Excellent runners and commentary.
Omg what a great exhibition of skill with these four amazing runners, thank you again for this show, thank you GDQ!
This was so close. All of these runners are so good they finish within seconds of eachother. Thanks boys, you raised over 70k. Imyt made a ton of progress to close the gap and finished strong. This is always my favorite part of gdq.
100% believe Zeni did that at the end on purpose
EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNING :'))))))))))))))))))))))))

WOW AMAZING PERFORMANCE!!
This was so much fun. Amazing commentary.
What a great race! GG to all four amazing runners. Can I say that when I saw the couch commentary team included HockeyTowner, I literally cheered out loud!
Way to go Oats! And congrats to all the runners for making it out alive! Fantastic run, guys!
Fantastic work everyone! So glad everyone finished!
this is a really kool concept, a race with 4 of the best runners is great
SO hyped to see this back, always my favourite...DEER FORCE! 👊
Just watched the blindfolded SM64 before this and now I keep thinking everyone is blindfolded and a god lol
These commentators were awesome! Great runs !!
Great commentary, great runs. Love Super Metroid!
This should have been the event finale. What a race !
Watching this reminds me of my first time seeing gdq and my love for super Metroid speedruns
Shout out to IMYT for intentionally slowing down a few seconds to allow time for that donation incentive to be met
Super Metroid should really be back as a regular game at GDQ. Its like THE quintessential speed run game along side Mario 64
What a nice moment with the goal being reached as they all finish. Would love to go to GDQ someday
Watched this live and it was EPIC!!!
Now THAT’s a quality race, wow for all 4!
Incredible race, might just have been one of the best they ever had on stage
i loved IMYT looking over and seeing ARC was at literally 1 hp going into Mother Brain 3
talk about cutting it close
8 years since SM was ran at GDQ? really?! thats insane SM and save /kill is always the peak GDQ hype, what a race. Feel bad for Cutie with that Draygon was making such great moves up till then.
It was 8 years since the last any% race
They meant "since an Any% race." It wasn't usually considered very marathon-safe because stopping to save isn't really viable. If you search for "Super Metroid SGDQ 2016" you can find the race - 3 out of 4 of the runners die. it ended up super dramatic, but it'd have been insanely anticlimactic if all 4 died!
I think they were saying that in eight years they haven't had everyone finish a Super Metroid race, someone always died somewhere along the line.
I flubbed that call, unfortunately: it was 8 years since this _category_ was featured at a GDQ >
I believe it's specifically 8 years since any% was ran at a GDQ, they've showcased other categories like 100% and Reverse Boss Order at events since then. 2022 was the only year without *any* Super Metroid presence from what I can find online.
Oats is THE goat
Zeni is so good
I agree with all comments. Such a great run. Almost challenging the last big one with Behemoth. Gotta shout out Eddie and especially Hockey Towner for legendary commentary 👌 👏 🙌 👍
Great to see SM back on stage where it belongs. The race was pretty close and they all finished!
What a cool event =) All 4 players are absolutely incredibill! Greetings from germany :)
Wow great commentary and damn Phantoon SCAMMED everyone 😂😂😂 I love to see boss RNG do it's thing.
Phantoon is always the hype boss to watch for these races. Draygon put up quite a fight this time, too!
This race was unbelievable!
Great job Oats !! Good run !!
Ridiculously fun to watch
Amazing run!
This was so cool to watch!
What a great race
More Super Metroid!
These boys was basically slide canceling using arm pumps these boys different
Awesome race!
One of the best games ever made
Yeah! Way to go, Oats!
What a great race. I usually tend to prefer watching rando races ... but it's insane to also see every once in a while how consistent these people are, also relative to each other when you throw away all the luck elements (well, except phantom?) and just let them do pure vanilla execution.
Such a great race 🎉
Aww! No DEER FORCE love?
l feel bad for IMYT, he was late because he pressed start too slow at the countdown. Great runs !
Well done

Very funny seeing how zeni troll us
Oats is the best!
Oats killed it.
Technically they came up a couple hundred dollars short before the race was over.
D E E R F O R C E
The funny thing is that I was playing Metroid N.E.S while this was happening
You're a good man
GDQ should let me compete in one of these races as a normie who can beat the game, but is not at all a speedrunner, just to show how insane these folks are.
Super Metroid Pros vs Joes? Now that's an idea!
Sick
Lets Go ooooooasss
Good lads.
good video to watch when you are in depression
Wow!
3:52 Oh good she DID say my name right. I couldn't hear her cause everyone started cheering when she said it lol. Shoutouts to these announcers who really know what they're doing and how to hype up the events. Good race too, sucks that save the animals won lol
Great run!
Vod people... you cut out the traditional deer force? D:
Run SM at GDQ every year!
I gotta wonder how much money "save/kill the animals" has raise over the years?
15:48 that’s disrespectful af D:
Q show, parabéns
Isn't oats also a ridiculously good guitarist? Am I thinking of the same guy?
Oas? :O
