Thank you for lending us your knowledge! I have been enjoying your retro segments, it’s a nice addition to the format.
Fascinating as always and I enjoyed the nostalgia trip at the end 👍
I feel you didn't read what Cerny said properly. He explained how games written to use 3D audio ALREADY have height channels as its fully positional. So Atmos should be much more than a "slight" improvement.
Digital Foundry also mentioned how it has hardly any lag compared to Xbox which in their opinion is unplayable with Atmos.
Yeah it took Sony way too long to roll this feature out. Final system software will be out in September, so 3 years after it’s release.
Nevertheless I’m very happy with it, currently using the beta. It’s great and I’m very happy that there are still a lot of games supporting it (all Tempest 3D games) and that there is no issues with lag.
Amazing and insightful PS5 Pro discussion. I appreciate in-depth content like this.
I must admit, I am in the target audience of a Pro - I even got my PS4Pro before I got a 4K tv :)
I am curious though, the existing PS5 uses an APU. Are you alluding to Sony could be using a separate cpu/gpu in future PS5’s? (due to a deal on unused RDNA3 chips)
That would entail some major redesign of the mainboard and ensuring matching performance title for title across new and old systems would be somewhat difficult.
Also, love the retro news!
Certainly not, a discrete CPU and GPU would not work now. The new PS5 will remain as an APU as this is a core benefit of the Console design and going back to the PS3 days would not be viable or cost effective. What I mean here is the cost of designing, masking and taping out a chip to build up the multiple stages of a monolithic design have a cost/time and yield. So what I am referring to in the video is this can be mitigated with the use of the current in production chips, this case the smaller 5nm RX7800 design which forms part of the die build that makes up the entire APU with the Zen2 element. This new chip may also leverage some chiplet elements for Memory controllers etc as this is a single direction for AMD and again means economies of scale. Fingers crossed we and I will know more soon and just what the new PS5 model is like from an internals process.
@@NXGamer I believe NX gamer is dead RIGHT. I don't see Sony releasing a Pro model anytime soon. It makes more sense to go with a PS6 in 26/27.
Phil Spencer mentioned after this video about cost not coming down. Sony is working hard to get the PS5 to $400. They lose off the digital version which is why we don't see many manufactured. Also MS has dragged Sony into a content war. The focus is on studio purchases. When Sony is spending money they can't afford to hurt the momentum of the PS5. Right now it's getting gamers in the ecosystem. A pro model only sold 10-15 million units. 8K is down quite a bit right now. Sony changed their mind on the Pro when they are releasing PS5 consoles w/ 24 month premium attached. Why release SM2 with the current model if a Slim is ready? Slim will launch next year and could add ray tracing like the Xbox One S added HDR.
I don’t need a PS5 Pro but will buy it if it comes to life!!!👍
Awesome episode! Your chat about the PS5, logistics and operations was fascinating. It's so rare to hear this topic discussed in games media.
I loved that manufacturing breakdown!
Quite an insightful and in depth, good video Thanks NXGamer...
Your information is always top notch! Have you ever considered an audio podcast version of your videos? It would be great for a commute!
I think Sony knows what they're doing with the PS5 Pro. Back in 2016, there was a lot of hand-wringing about the PS4 Pro coming out too soon, how no one had a 4k TV, how only 18% of developers viewed a mid-gen refresh as a good thing, how two SKUs would complicate development and confuse consumers. The PS4 Pro went on to exceed Sony's expectations. Per Jim Ryan, 40% of PS4 Pros were sold to consumers upgrading from a base PS4.
"We were confident about the product but have really been taken aback by how well it's done," Ryan said. "Almost one in five PlayStations sold since that launch in November has been a Pro. That's significantly ahead of our expectations. We're feeling pretty good about that."
They must see 10-20 million units as a success. Why wouldn't they try to repeat that success?
I have read nothing that says making a PS4 Pro version was onerous for developers. Especially since PS4 Pro support was entirely optional.
Great video, enjoyed this a lot.
Glad you enjoyed it
I disagree on the PS5 pro topic. It would be awesome and sell well.
How much are you willing to pay for it???
@@DeadPhoenix86DPto each their own, i d pay 700 or 800 if Sony went crazy with the pro
@@ElPibePlay1000 I can't afford that. So i have to pass on it.
Great video, very insightful, thanks
The best 👌
Im hoping that a ps5 pro would do the fidelity modes of games at 4k 60fps, possibly with better ray tracing. Id forsure be a day 1 adopter if that was the case.
Yep me too
that would require it to have double the performance. quite unrealistic.
@@ewerton8463 It's not that unrealistic. Most games are GPU bottlenecked, so if the cpu is mostly the same, might need 24gb instead of 16gb of Ram, but most of the extra resources could go to the gpu. It's not like this is going to be a $400-500 system either. This'll probably be an extra two or three hundred dollars more then the ps5 is, just like how the ps4 pro was more expensive then the ps4.
My first computer was an acorn electron, well it was the family's.
I'd sit on my dad's knee whilst he would load games, or we'd write programs out from magazines and run them.
Chucky egg, hopper, sphinx adventure, Thrust
Great vid✌️
I really want a PS5 Pro
I had a digital now I have a disc and I will buy a pro in a heart beat. I want the best of Sony
I watched the DF video about the 40fps mode on Ratchet and Clank, and it inspired me with my new 120hz screen to try it out on other games. Somehow it seems to punch above its weight even though it's only 10 frames more than 30, with the latter feeling significantly more sluggish. It feels closer to 60, but of course with the advantage of being 33% cheaper to run.
It seems like a really good sweet spot between the costs of performance vs visual fidelity and hardware limitations.
A PS5 Pro would mean no need for reprojection for 120 FPS games with PSVR 2.
That's very definitive of you.
Or AT LEAST 90 FPS for all games !
i have all the components for Atmos except the speaker mounts for my ceiling.
PITA, it's always something else i gotta get
PlayStation 5 is the best Console platform and it’s not even close as We’ve got both and I rarely touch the XSX
I’m a PS5 Pro day 1 owner if they do it. I have a 7900xt PC but prefer the console environment. If they will do new consoles every three years, i’d probably drop PC.
I only wish they could implement a vsync toggle at system level, my main issue with consoles is the high input lag that makes some games unpleasant to play compare to the PC version
Totally agree with you regarding PS5 Pro: the only people that want this are hardware geeks fantasizing about 240Hz gaming on a console. The vast majority of consumers don't care (as evidenced by the continued popularity of the Switch), and few developers are even tapping the power of the current console generation. A "Pro" is more likely to have negative impact rather than a positive one. It makes more sense for Microsoft to do a "Pro" as a way of getting more attention, in which case Sony might be forced to respond, but I don't think either company sees that as a desirable strategy.
I really don't understand your 60CU breakdown portion of this video. Why are you talking about desktop GPU dies as if they are grafted onto the APU? The APU is monolithic and doesn't care whether a desktop part is in current production or not... Are you saying that SONY are going to make a two-chip console instead of an APU? That would ruin the memory configuration on the APU (now CPU + GPU) and cause all sorts of incompatibilities with the software!
Or are you saying that there is a new APU that SONY has in their possession with 60 CPU (which is not able to be cut-down to match 36 CU configuration) but which has such poor yields that SONY are cutting it down to 36 CU?
I'm sorry but either you've confused your explanation or you've deeply misunderstood something.
I pretty much had the same issue. Rewatched that part 3 times and still don't get the point there. If Sony didn't plan to get away from the base spec, there would be no reason to shift to RDNA3 to begin with, especially if the alternative will result in a larger chip and you're left cutting down 40% of your GPU silicon real estate to get back to performance parity. That simply doesn't make any sense to me, but Michael usually knows what he's talking about so I'm just really confused here.
Yeah he really went off the reservation there, unexpected for him to get something so wrong.
Can't wait for ps5 pro ❤
I understand and sympathize with further spec enhancements to increase or stabilize resolution and frame rates.
However, I would just as much like to see an enhancement in voice chat sound quality. When will console voice chat sound quality match that of PC and smartphone apps?
Will we have a review of the Retrotink 4k?
Sales are already in affect here in Mexico. You can buy a PS5 for 360 dollars
You always bring up things that others miss (eg Digital Foundry, RedGamingTech). Regarding Ps5 Pro rumours it seems like you have a much more complete understanding of the production processes/economies of scale as a generation develops. Once i figured out and understood what you were saying it seems very logical... But disappointed as I'd love a Pro 😀
How can one not see the benefits of a more powerful PS5? PSVR2, Raytracing, 4K@60 just to name the most important 🙈
Do you have any thoughts on the following: I have a 1440p 27" IPS 144hz (165hz OC) gsync only panel with pretty solid colors and a 6950xt/7700x/32gb (Manjaro KDE Linux) to push it. I play mostly single player cRPG or Isometric game along with some hobby programming .Do you think the would be any value for gaming from getting one of these new LG OLED panel that Asus, Corsair, LG or others use (240hz, 27", 1440p, free sync and gaync)? OLED had plenty of hype, but the more I read they less I think it's a good upgrade.... But maybe just going from IPS to OLED even if only pushing 120hz might look better?
I feel as soon as you try an oled you never want to go back because of the inky blacks what no other tech can match
@@rottieman that is what I've heard others post online. Is the text issue that places like Monitors Unboxed as bad as they say? I would be doing mostly surfing (research, news, etc), programming and gaming on it so really a mix
@techieg33k it's the best you can get for gaming and makes a real difference but it's uses for the rest I can't answer as I use my oled for gaming only
@@rottieman and I won't have that luxury... It will have to pull double duty, though I'm not worried about burn in as content will change on my screen often enough
I think NX gamer is right about no Pro model. I think Sony has something in R&D but selling 1 out of 5 isn't worth splitting the user base and adding another sku. Also the best strategy for Sony is not allow MS to forge their own path and release the PS6 in the same time window. You don't want generations to end and Jim Ryan said " he believes in generations". The focus seems to be a content war and games sell. I think Sony is focused on more studios and content and losing on hardware makes no sense.
Why is the text back to front
tell me bluray drive ps5 is normal to be loud?
Yes its normal.
I'd love to see your thoughts on the newly announced Ray Reconstruction that Nvidia did with DLSS 3.5
Richard just said that NVIDIA are 5 years a head. Are we seeing the fact that they are sponsored by NVIDIA?
I don’t get it. We see these unreal engine 5 games struggling on ps5 and and Xbox but people can’t see a need for pro consoles?
Would Playstation 5 Pro have disc drive included same way as the basic Playstation 5 have?
That its the biggest QUASTIAN who need answear!
Probably digital Only. Since company's don't care about Physical media.
Same as "PS5 slim", it will have a detachable drive
@@ElPibePlay1000
Then I'm not the only one Who won't bay it.
Myself and plenty of other I know would bay it day 1 if disc drive are included And 2 TB storage.
Hope they could simple do the same as with the Basic Playstation 5'
One Playstation 5 Pro disc version and 1 Digital version.
@@heavensea141 if the slim model leak is legit, PS5 slim will have 2 variants, the difference is you can add de disc drive later on the digital console
Didn't know the Forza thing, that's terrible.
Yeah a ps5 pro doesn't really make any sense i hope they just go forward with a ps6 in 4-5 years
Well Rip Forza Motorsport. I was exited to play it. But now I'll just skip it. Its the same Story with Gran Turismo. I hate the Always Online !!!
I have some theory about the existence pro version since ps4 pro. What if actually pro version of PS4 or the rumored PS5 pro is just the early prototype of PS5 or PS6 that were not intended to be sold to market? The reason why PS5 has similar GPU layout and how it's kind of obvious on how tech company has prototype design 5 to 6 years before it was released .
If ps5 can’t guarantee 1440p native 60fps RT by late 2024 I’d gladly buy a pro if it guaranteed 4k 60fps RT.
How much are you willing to pay for that???
@@DeadPhoenix86DP 600 max preferably 500 if it’s anymore it won’t be worth the money I’ll wait for ps6.
But theres no way it'll guarantee 4k 60 with raytracing as the best graphics cards from nvidia have trouble pushing that and they have a lot more wattage and cost four times the price of a ps5
@@rottieman with DLSS no they don’t… and not with console settings.
@Entertainment-ev6ob sony consoles will never have dlss so my point stands
Sonys biggest use for a ps5 pro is that it fits in with jim ryans aim to position playstation as the high end brand like apple, you might only move a few million units but every game runs best on playstation
Oh god please not you too.
I can now name numerous titles that have internal resolutions lower then 1080p. We NEED Pro consoles.
i'm slightly confused, are you saying that sony have a stack of unsold 7800 will be in the ps5 slim? Because 7800 is isn't an apu.... So are sony going chiplet? I sadly doubt this.
Now bring it back to the rumour that it is an apu, featuring rdna 3.5 then there is more to gain from this with regards to rnda 3 being dual issue and the ps6.
Think about the direction AMD are going with rnda5 or 6. Far better to have the devs have the handle on dual issue now than having to learn it all again later and sony do tend to be closer to metal than microsoft. So think this would be more powerful than then rnda 3 found in pc due to this.
The other reason is sony haven't gotten over xbox series x being more power, their arrogance means they'll lunch a PS5 Pro just because they can.
I don't think Sony cares about being the most powerful, seeing as they haven't been that since the One X released but it hasn't made a difference to their sales figures. My guess is they have been working on bespoke AI upscaling and RT hardware. They love a custom hardware solution, like the I/O and Tempest in PS5.
Certainly not, a discrete CPU and GPU would not work now. The new PS5 will remain as an APU as this is a core benefit of the Console design and going back to the PS3 days would not be viable or cost effective. wrong. ps5 pro coming 2024.
Trashbox Series X can only play 25% of 360 games and 5% of original trashbox games. So tell me how trashbox supports all generations fanboy
You xbots truly are the anti vaxxers of gaming
NX G ...I love your insightful content but have one disagreement. A Pro console is not a mass market product. It is a premium product for the hardcore. It is flawed marketing to try and sell a premium product to the masses using TV resolution as the driver. The masses are never going to buy the premium product. Premium hardcore gamers want image quality and performance improvements. That is what the Pro delivers. More stable frame rate and the 1440p resolution bump is downsampled to a 1080p giving a gloriously smooth anti aliasing on a 1080p TV.
The PS4 Pro did that, better 1080p image quality. The PS5 Pro will do it, better 4K image quality. Forget 4K on a PS4 Pro. Forget 8K on a PS5 Pro. They are flawed marketing to the masses. Upscaling to higher resolutions is always a stretch too far which leads to lower image quality. Premium hardcore gamers do not want that. Know your target audience within the market.
Your logic suggests that Sony should only manufacture budget TV's because they sell the most to the mass market. Sony also make high end TV's to target the small premium hardcore viewer. In order to increase your share of the market overall, you have to have a diverse range of products to target different consumer groups within the market. Rejecting the Pro just because it won't sell to the mass market is flawed logic.
finally ps5pro will run games in 1080p instead of 720p(upscaled with terrible fsr to 1440p NEXT GEN). But no actual ray tracing because of amd chips can't run it even on high end gpus
AMD runs ray tracing, it doesn't have dedicated hw to BVH traversal so it uses shaders+TMUs
The rest of the comment is wrong too
Starfield.
Absolutely disagree with game pass being a “race to the bottom” and “largely terrible first party output”. Redfall was atrocious, but fh5, Pentiment, flight sim, Hifi Rush, grounded, as dusk falls, gears tactics, psychonauts 2, aoe2 were all well reviewed first party games since the new consoles launched. Also, “without Starfield, xbox wouldn’t have anything this fall but forza”. Such a silly statement. Without Zelda, pikmin, and Mario, Nintendo wouldn’t have much this year. Without Spider-Man 2, Sony wouldn’t have much this year
Sony made Spider-Man 2 and Nintendo made Zelda TOTK while microsoft had to buy starfield because their own first party games were terrible
