I would love to see an expensive car version of this (modern) and also a collectors car version of this video concept. Also perhaps flip it and have men ranking cars.

And also agreed about this era of BMWs. I think they lost their way a bit after this...I blame the E65 7-series, which introduced everything that sucked that eventually filtered down across the entire lineup!
Manuels are great except in traffic. Luckily we don't have that problem in LA.
I can handle it as long as the clutch has some sort of hydraulic system to "help" you.
My two Mustangs did NOT and they were an absolute bear in stop and go LA traffic. I did get a nice workout on my left leg each day, however!
BTW didn't you used to have a BMW 5 series?
@@RetroCarsForever True! It was the clutching that eventually sent me into an automatic. But I made it for a long time. All my early cars were manuals.
Most cars in Europe are manuals. Auto box is wonderful in traffic but if you can operate the clutch of your car it doesn't really make a difference if you do that twice or two hundred times a day... Or does it?
I didn’t know I needed this video... until I watched this video. I’ve owned 2E 39‘s one 530i one 540i both black on black both manual so much fun to drive!

It was pretty evenly split love/hate and that is kind of what I expected.
I really liked the comments about why does it have a stick and four doors... and if you are going to go fast why not drive something flashy.
One of the women who made those comments also ranked it #1, so that is interesting.
I have to agree that you picked a well-rounded well-spoken group of women. Their thought processes are nuanced.
Agreed! I couldn't have been happier with the 10 women we "cast" for our panel. They're all super sharp, witty, and not afraid to hold back on their opinions!
And for non car enthusiasts, they seem to mostly "get" what enthusiasts are looking for in these cars.

its so funny when they bring up the sticks.. but yes americans normally have automatic gearboxes, here in europe mostly all are manual :) also funny i have a corvette c4 from 91 manual gearbox, a bmw e39 manual but not the m5..just normal small 6 cylindre engine and a jeep but not the wrangler but a cherokee xj from 90 so kinda have 3 cars on your list hahaha and no one will win :P

Despite this, I completely get the "love it or hate it" approach, and the getting zoomed by on the highway. That does happen alot, I have to say 😂😂
I purposely picked women who WEREN'T car enthusiasts, as they vastly outnumber women who ARE car enthusiasts, so that's kind the point!
And yeah, even though I used to own a BMW myself, and it's totally true that you often see those drivers (newer ones anyways) driving like a-holes.

I wonder what would they say about Mercedes SL or CL, BMW 6 cabriolet/coupe, VW Beetle (5c Current model), Nissan 350/370 Z, 2012 or earlier Porsche Boxster, Mercedes E63 AMG but especially the wagon, Audi A or S8, Volvo XC70, Subaru Impreza wrx/sti, Mazda Miata....

and yeah I have been wondering about this whole stick shift thing too. where I come from most drive stick. but then, many have 4x4s.

I wouldn’t go that far but it’s true, they take a lot more to keep going than your average Lexus.
I would still trust this more than the DeLorean! They talk about that in the DeLorean episode more.
Also I doubt any of these ladies watch Scotty!

E39 is said to be the most reliable beemer ever produced. I'm not sure about that, but it's definitely overengineered and still very mechanical. Older ones (E34, E30) are not far behind, if at all. The E60, E65, F and G series models are a different story, but a well maintained example doesn't have to be a pain in the butt. The thing with these cars is that their owners tend to beat the living cr*p out of them, contrary to your usual Lexus owner. Killmer is not saying bollocks but it's not the full story.
One of the best cars of all time. BMW or not. Just goes to show how judgemental some people can be about brands. Judge the model, not the brand.
A lot for enthusiasts definitely put this car in the top lists of sedans ever built.
But part of this experiment was to discover what non enthusiasts associate with certain brands/cars, whether bad or good.
It’s my dream car, they don’t make them like this anymore.

@@RetroCarsForever Thanks. I actually own a 2004 Cadillac CTS with 3.6 V6 mated to the 5 speed Auto. I couldn’t find a CTS-V so I settled on this one. I get comments from family and friends on it and I did hear a few girls from my college mention I had a “really pretty car”. People do stare at the front end because of the chrome front grille, similar to the one on the CRS-V from the same generation.

I did steer away from minivans as for THIS test, I was looking for single guys/gals that didn't have kids (to my knowledge anyways).
Just to keep the test more even/scientific...I didn't want a woman to give a minivan a bad score, just because they might now WANT a man who has kids already, if that makes sense. Just added another variable to the experiment that I was trying to lock down.

I’d say the two cars are pretty even. The performance numbers of the day back that up.
@@RetroCarsForever I'm not talking numbers, I'm talking handling agressive driving through turns. Handling, weight and driveability means more than power. You can have a ton of power, but if you can't put it down on the asphalt, then what's it really worth?
Another good video man. I still don't understand how a Wrangler got better score than a C4. Civic is kinda ok. İt's a modern new sedan. And it's looks ok. (I still believe C4 is better) And M5 is ok too. İt's a nice car. But a Wrangler? Seriously?
And ı still believe you should add a Tank (or any vehicle with tracks) too.
I totally get why they liked the Wrangler so much. Unassuming yet rugged, outdoorsy, etc-

I'm pretty annoyed that those women think that a basic bitch BMW owner who buys a new BMW is the same kind of person as an enthusiast BMW owner. An enthusiast owner is a completely different kind of owner, they fix those annoying BMW issues themselves and tend to be a bit more humble because no matter what the brand says, at the end of the day, it's a shitbox they have to fix.
Totally get that, and I have found that most enthusiasts are much more responsible.
@@RetroCarsForever True, I personally own a S2000 and I was cross shopping a 986 Boxsters before I got my S2000 and I find it ridiculous to think that if I chose the Porsche, all of a sudden I'd be some "rich" jerk in a Porsche while in my S2000 I'm a boy racer in a fancy Honda. I'm the same guy!
I wish more people recognized the difference between a used and new buyers and what a car is BEYOND what the manufacturer badge is because within models like even Civics, a Civic Type R and a Civic DX are totally different animals with totally different types of owners.

@@RetroCarsForever True, but I find that when it comes to cars and computers and other things people use daily, people think they know a lot more about the subject than they actually do and treat those who are in that niche as such, it's pretty frustrating.

@@RetroCarsForever just an observation, most corvettes I see at the track doing laps are c5 and up. And all corvettes gens can be seen at the drag strip.
@@_nitedrive the e39 m5 is still regarded one of the best all motor v8 manual super sedans. No modern electronics assistance. Just pure driving experience. Also see them at the track sometimes too doing laps.

I was honestly surprised by the general positivity towards manuals, as these are all NON car enthusiast women.
Only simps care about what girls think about there car. But nonetheless I still would love an E39 M5.
Jesus why is this “series” still going? I don’t care what a woman thinks of my car. Why should I? I bought it for my reasons, not to impress them. Anyone who tries to impress a woman with their car or worries what they’ll think of it is a cuke.
Creator here...Honestly, this WAS gonna be one giant video, as I figured this would be a fun idea to do while we're all stuck in quarantine.
But the women had such insightful/funny/thoughtful responses that I realized this would be better served as a 10 part series.
As it turns out many people enjoy this series, if nothing else for pure curiosity sake. I agree, people should buy cars that make THEM happy.
But it is interesting to hear from actual single women what they are thinking about, what cars say about certain people, and all that...ESPECIALLY as they're non-enthusiasts.
