The E39 M5 is buttery smooth
E39 will always be my favourite
Always loved the E39 M, but in a way the E90 M3 made the E39 M5 somewhat obsolete (at least for me). The M3 was also a V8 with 4 doors, but lighter, faster and higher revving. Although I do understand the differences in that the E39 is more comfortable and is a larger car. Interesting how that turned out. I used to own a E39 528i and loved it as well.
Both the E90 M3 and E39 M5 perform similarly, yet you overlooked aesthetics. The E90 M3 ranks among the most hideous M cars ever produced, while the E39 is universally celebrated as one of the most visually appealing.
Yep, that is indeed very subjective. Somehow I just don't find the E39 as one of the best looking M cars and would argue the opposite in that the E90 (facelift) looks better. That being said, I know where the owners are coming from and I'd love to own either one or even better both! Unfortunately, with the pricing only going up, I think one would have to prioritize and pick only 1, which for me (and possibly others) would be the E90 M3. Honestly it would even be other M models first, like my E46. That's the great and yet a sad thing about M models, they are all great and you want but yet can't have them all.
Oh and yeah that being said, the first pre-facelifted E90 that came out was plain ugly back in the day from the back. Good point!
@@VidNibs”ranks among the most hideous M cars ever produced” get ya eyes checked bro
@@VidNibsthe e9x m3 looks way better than any M5 of any generation IMO
My E39 M5 226k miles and still going. My best pick would be a E34 touring with s62
The E60 is the most exciting when you drive it and theyre not nearly as 'unreliable' as the internet comment sections say - 90% of people that comment on the E60 V10 have never driven one - get one while theyre still not ridiculous money
E39 are a dream from 528 530 540 and M5 this set the standard of feel for M5s for the following 18 years of M5. The stability of the frame to the feel of drifting , for the weight amounts to the power amounts you'll focus and out it really means nothing ... Now drive a 3950lb E39 M5 and then get in a 4500 gen 1 charger . And the charger feels like is 7000 lbs lol ... BMW 4 life E39 is a classic.ive owned 3 and own 2 currently, I regret selling one of my manuals
Great video and I really appreciate the relaxed feel of your presentation. I love all classic BMW's. I've owned quite a few over the years and I keep coming back for more. I have the E39 M5 and it is such a refined car for its time.
E39 has such a special place in my heart. I had the pleasure to put about 100k on one over a 5 year period. Easily the best DD and all around car I’ve ever owned.
It’s a Jack of all trades. Good at everything. And such a good looking solid feeling machine.
I miss that era of BMW.
Always wanted to experience e28 ownership. Not sure it makes sense at current pricing anymore.
Nothing better than an e39m5 other than one with the Dinan s2 package…which I happen to have. I have many toys but this is still my daily driver. Love her
Never gonna be in a position to drive any of these but the E28 has always been my favorite. The E39 is a very close second. Great that you smooshed their drive tests together in a single video.
7:25-8:00 “..the m5 isn’t supposed to be a lightweight nimble sports car; that’s what the m3 is for..”
thank u 🙏

the e28 and e39 have actually been by two favorite m5's of all time. Both properly sized too. Of course, as far as the e28, the euro spec e28 m5 has the better exterior styling and m88/3 motor, but from what I gather, the s38 is no slouch and still has great character, and at least BMW gave us the ITB's too, unlike with the US e36 m3 vs euro e36 m3. I love the e28 for all the same reasons that zygrene mentions in the video. I'd even have the non-m euro spec 528i or 535i (for the higher output motors and the euro bumpers) just for that chassis and steering feel. The e39 I feel is the greatest M5 of all time, especially for that superb s62. No turbos here, just the pure, characterful responsive performance that can only come from an n/a V8 on ITB's. And BMW absolutely nailed the styling of the e39 hands down. Even the interiors wore a high quality, modern look and feel, yet still remained somehow faithful to that traditional simple and sporty analogue styling of classic bmw interiors. The M5, in particular, was just sublime in its exterior (and interior) styling with its subtle aggression (all the way down to those fantastic shadow chrome split spoke wheels), the kind of elegant, cool and restrained look BMW should have stuck with, where the performance spoke for itself and the cars didn't need to shout, "look at me!" With that said, the F90 m5 CS has my attention. @waveslicer303 I agree with your rankings and evaluation.
I think the M5 is even more difficult to compare than the M3 with how different they all are. The E28 M5 really was a lightweight "sports" sedan with racecar heritage (in the original M88) that is playful and fun. With each generation the M5 got a bigger engine (until the switch to turbocharging) and became more refined. Everyone raves about the E39 M5, and for good reason. It's probably objectively the best car of the bunch. But I think that the E39 M5 is maybe even too perfect of car (sounds ridiculous I know). I get more "theater" from driving the E28, if that makes sense. The E34 is also good because it has a more powerful version of the US-spec E28 motor, but you can feel the added weight in comparison to the E28 even with the added power. Plus, the E34's steering falls victim to that typical 90s dead center steering feel. Even though the E60 M5 is not my favorite, I love BMW for even putting a V10 in a sedan. To me though that car is all motor, and that isn't enough to make up for all its other faults. The F10 is objectively the worse car and the F90 to me is the modern E39: a perfectly refined and fast ass as hell experience.
My personal rankings:
1. E28 M5
2. E39 M5
3. E34 M5
4. F90 M5
5. E60 M5
6. F10 M5
Did you drive them all, I had a e39 m5 and f10 m5 and the f10 was better in every single way, steering suspension engine interior I can go on, stop looking over the f10 it's a great machine
Yeah I've driven every generation of M3 and M5. To me the F10 M5 is more of a numb German muscle car than a precision handling machine - which is probably why I didn't like it. It's objectively a fast car. Always wants to go sideways. I didn't like the steering feel at all and felt underbraked from factory unless you got the carbons. To me it lacks the theater and emotion that its predecessors had and just felt it was more AMG (or Hellcat) than M. Just my 2 cents.@@intelligentcarreviews8592
I bet the F10 will come out as the underdog to being one of the favorites... possibly. It wasn't a very loved gen but I think it aged ok.
The interiors do not age well on any F chassis BMW.
@@Stephen-re4oy possibly but I have an E46 and an F11 and I wouldn't necessarily say that one aged better than the other...
Counting the number of smiles, laughs and woohoos to see which is the best 😛
Nice work. Looking forward to the E34 and E60. Those are my two favourites. E39 is great but has always had a slight vibe of successful organised crime operative to me. Have a feeling that a really sorted E34 is probably the best driver's car, but I have only driven E39 and F10 variants. E60 Touring would probably be my overall pick. That V10 plus a slightly more neutral image.
Successful organized crime operative is SO accurate 😂
Interesting fact is that the non M E39 had a rack and pinion and probably better steering feel
Yep, and that was only for the non V8s due to the space constraints
What M series you doing next?
I would love if u could review a 944 turbo one day
Patiently waiting for an offer!
No e34 test drive?
1:38 nice e46 there 😁
Yup, he reviewed that M3 in this video:

E39 M5 what a car!
E28 bitutiful. E28, e34 and d39 Nice.
LoL. What a video. Greetings from Greece.
If you could make the V10 car reliable then it would be the best by a mile. As it stands there can only be one, e39.
not drive by wire... its electronic
also thanks for saying that the e39 M5 doesnt have to live up to the M3s because thats not what its made for! everyone seems to judge the M5s against the M3 but after all the M5 was made as a sporty luxury family car that could go 250 on the autobahn comfortably, and also go relatively fast on track.
That's what drive by wire is, an electronic throttle body controlled by a pedal with a potentiometer attached to it, which can also be manipulated by the computer for traction control.
Its drive by wire in the sense that they are electronic wires, not cables.
@@serge933 thanks for clearing that up, english isnt my first language so to me drive by wire would logically mean an actual wire 😅 but i suppose a wire could also be a electrical wire so yeah that ones on me
Tough to judge without ensuring all parts are fresh and new.
True, but we make do with what we can get. Nearly impossible to get apples to apples examples of all these cars.
Best e34 l6 ....
nice video, so no hate here, but e28 is not 3500lbs
Top 1. E28 with 286hp 2ond. E34 3.6 315hp 3.8 340hp 3ond. E39.. then im done!
E39 best M5!
E60 M5 once all mechanical issues are sorted.
2nd e39. 3 f90. 4 f10.
E39 is beautiful and powerful. It's a bit lazy, heavy and poor steering tho and overall feel.
The e46 m3 is ugly as shiite by comparison
let me guess
1. E39
2. E34 / E60
4. all the others
