Well... You like this movie as do I. Have you ever seen The Fall (2006) by Tarsem Singh? Best hidden gem especially because it is so hard to find. I think it's getting a rerelease this year. I don't obviously know you, but I recommend highly to find it and watch it. Won't say a word as to go in blind is the best way to watch it. If you do... Please find this convo and lmk your thoughts.
Michel Gondry is by far my favourite music video director in the 90s-2000s (when MTV and music videos were a thing) and he has perfected those dreamy perspective shots using no CGI, only physical props, check videos of Bjork, Chemical Brothers, Daft Punk. Amazing and unique, as is this movie. A true artist!
I bought this film the first day that the DVD was on sale, that is how much I adored this film. Loved that you caught the whole missing journal pages so quickly. Somebody probably said this, but her hair colour reflects the 'seasons' of their relationship ... Green Spring, Red Summer, Orange Autumn, Blue winter...
I love this movie and love that you reacted to it. It is, at its core, a break-up movie. By using nonlinear storytelling and a genre story device (ability to erase specific memories), we are able to see how important every moment is in life (as we live a linear existence) and even when painful - how they define, shape and mold our next memories. I don't know if Clem and Joel are meant for each other, but like many break-ups - many try again because there was a flicker of 'meant to be' in the good parts of the relationship. They will try again, and they will see if they can make it work knowing some of the issues that caused problems the 1st time. How we get here in this movie is why it is so good.
This is a great one. Really blew me away when I saw it in the theaters, I think. I love when comedians get to that stage where they want to not be funny and stretch into dramatic roles. Sometimes it doesn't work, but sometimes it can be really great. Jim Carrey had already been on that path, a little bit, but this was a new plateau for him. Prior to this, he did a biopic of Andy Kaufman called "Man On The Moon" which was good, but because it was Andy Kaufman, it wasn't exactly playing it straight. There's even a really good documentary about how method he went to be Andy, and if you don't know Andy, it's kind of debatable which one of the two of them were more out of their minds. You have to see to know what I'm talking about. Another one to check out on a lesser but similar note is Will Ferrell in "Stranger Than Fiction". Which isn't quite on this level, a little more light hearted, and comedic in a really sweet way, but still a really good flick, and Will Ferrell is very good while playing it very straight. There's even a couple moments where the story would've allowed for him to be a little more like you'd normally expect of him, but he doesn't go for it.
Stranger than Fiction is phenomenal. I already recommended one... Maybe you haven't seen it. The Fall (by Tarsem Singh) 2006. Hard to find but worth the watch.
Great reaction! I saw it in the theater, when it was released and loved it and have seen it a couple of times since. But, you picked up on small details, subtleties, and nuances I missed and I felt more of an emotional connection to the film watching it with you, than I did alone. Thanks, Coby! p.s.: I thought Beck’s cover of “Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime” to close the film perfectly captured the mood and it’s been a favorite of mine ever since.
This is one of my favorite movies. You may have already realized this, but Clementine didn't change her name; Tangerine was just a nickname Joel gave her and she gave her doll the same name as herself. I'm impressed with how quickly you figured out that the beginning was actually Joel and Clem meeting for the second time; I didn't pick up on that until Joel was describing how they first met to Dr. Mierzwiak. Some people don't get it until the end. I'm not the most optimistic person, but I choose to believe Joel and Clementine made their relationship work the second time around.
Omg a first date?! That must have been a really interesting conversation afterwards! You'll learn a lot about a person in 20 minutes of talking this film heading into a new situation!
BINGO. My favorite guilty pleasure is reaction videos, precisely because it’s as close to seeing it again for the first time you can possibly get! It’s the best.
Pretty much a perfect movie. With Coby working out the timeline so early, this became an interesting test of how the movie works if you spot the “twist.” And it does (just like Sixth Sense does). There’s something really profound in this film about the value of relationships that don’t work, and whether patterns in relationships are inevitable or can be re-set. It’s a beautiful film.
29:02 - He is fighting the erasure of his own memory because he has changed his mind during the actual procedure. This makes the work of the technicians more difficult. He also seems to be trying to alter his own memories. It is like being in a lucid dream and trying either to alter the events in the dream, or else fighting to wake up out of it. The Elijah Wood character is one slimy worm indeed.
I would classify this as a (dark) romantic/dramatic comedy. It’s impossible to put into a single traditional genre. A very unique and entertaining film.
One of the most beautiful films ever made, and a superlative reaction -- perceptive and sensitive. Thank you. People disagree over whether Joel and Clementine's revivified relationship will work. I think I prefer the more melancholy interpretation: that they both willingly enter the relationship knowing that it's doomed, because they've learned that, on balance, the good memories are more important than the bad ones.
I got to direct Tom Wilkinson in a series of English language training videos back in the day. Always glad to see him get some live, even posthumously!
That's first reaction from Coby that i remember seeing her eyes watering. I think this is a sign of romantic soul. The story is beautiful, even if ugly in all the negatives they found in their relationship. The thing that they were still drawn to each other no matter what.
Devastatingly, visceral movie that makes most anyone who watches it mine their own personal timelines of highs and lows with exes...quite an artistic achievement. Beck's cover of Everybody's Got to Learn Sometime is perfection. ❤Coby's reactions. Cheers!
When I met my now ex we went to see this movie in the theatre - it was one of our first dates. We were like a carbon copy of Joel and Clementine - then around a month after we saw the movie we flew out to NYC and took the LIRR out to Montauk. We were together until 2016; one of the big arguments we had paralleled the one they're having in the movie talking about children - I was working a lot, and he insisted I wouldn't be spending any time with a child if we had one, so, no kids. Then when we split up I was so angry that I told my ex that if this memory erasing procedure existed I would have had him erased. Now years later I realized that I don't want to lose those memories; while we had a few bad times, nearly everything else was positive - and fun.
❤ I absolutely love watching movies with you Coby Connell, I love watching how genuinely loving and good hearted of a person you are, I mean your reactions to these movies are so SWEET and REAL (even when it’s something so innocent like that little boy 👦🏼reuniting with his mother in Close Encounters of the 3rd kind) watching you get so genuinely-emotionally invested in these movies makes my hart absolutely melt 🫠 honestly it’s been 6 or 7 years since I’ve had someone I can actually enjoy watching movies with in my life, to the point that I feel incredibly sad for myself that I have that in my life vicariously through your content and that I not only watch but REwatch some of the same movies that I love with you OVER AND OVER again… I am So jealous of any person that gets to spend even a few moments with you …you must be an incredibly beautiful person to love and be loved by… hopefully one day I’ll find someone like you to fill that empty void in my heart. 💔… (it feels stupid for me to think it and even more for admitting it because I don’t know anything about you well, except what you put out there, but I have zero doubt in my mind and heart that you would be the type of woman that I would fall head over heels and do anything for… you’re not only incredibly sweet, loving, caring, compassionate, beautiful, amazingly, sexy, smart, and genuine, but you are also without a doubt in my mind…A true gift. 🥰🫶🫦💋 and no matter how many channels you have ☺️ I’ll do my best to follow you cause I’m 💯% ENCHANTED ✨by you Colby Connell. 🌹
I ADORE this film. I saw it in the theater when it first came out and I had no idea what it was about… and was just floored. The director had done some amazing music videos and was so creative. Just amazing performances, direction, effects, story. Since you love this one, here’s some other films are that just as indelible: “PLEASANTVILLE,” (starts out a comedy and turns into something much, much more), “STRANGER THAN FICTION,” (another brilliant film that went totally under the radar. Great cast, story, acting, etc), “AMELIE” (magical French film that is so beautiful and romantic and fun)… If you see any of these films, you will never forget them. LOVED your take on this one, so I’m sure you’ll adore these. Cheers!
This is my favorite film of all time and out of ALL of the reaction videos I have watched for it and ALL of the people I’ve shown it to for the first time in my real life, I am pretty certain you caught on to the beginning being the second meeting faster than anyone I have ever seen. Bravo, my friend. You are very smart, genuine and intuitive and I really appreciated and respected your commentary throughout. You more than earned a subscription from me and I look forward to following your channel from here on out.
I'm impressed you cracked the timeline mystery so early in the movie. Myself I barely got it at the end. But it's one of my favourite movies. Though in the original script the movie ended with Joel and Clementine entering an infinite loop of breaking up, erasing memories and reuniting. Thankfully they thought better of it. The way it ends now is actually somewhat hopeful. Sure, they lost their memories of their previous life together, but they surely will remember the day they heard each other's tapes. And how in spite of all that they still were so drawn to each other. It strongly hints at love and attraction being about more than concrete memories you can mechanically erase. Which - until we finally understand the human brain fully - is a fascinating idea.
The cinematography for this movie is amazing. They were able to do so many effects in camera (forced perspective, set changes, etc.). And I really recommend looking up the IMDB trivia for this movie!
48:15 Joel: You said "so go" with such disdain ya know? Clementine: Oh, I'm sorry... It's so easy to get your feelings hurt in a relationship. It's hard to properly communicate and be "on" all the time.
So many people think that Jim Carrey is very funny. I have always thought he’s a much better dramatic actor. He is so underrated when he does serious film films.
I enjoy your reactions, they're very authentic. I like how it all came to a head in the hallway, and she said how things would be, how they would just go through the same cycle, and he said, "ok."
Charlie Kaufman is a bona fide genius. A reviewer once said this is the most realistic depiction of a relationship in film. I must agree. But the footage of them frolicking in the snow at the end plays in a loop three times. What are we too make of that? They can't repeat their original actions, since Mary has destroyed Lacuna. Now you only get one more chance. . . . If one has the guts, I highly recommend Kaufman's other films, especially his magnum opus "Synecdoche New York" (2008). After watching it, one of the New York film critics spent the rest of the night alone in a bar getting drunk. Brilliant work, but strong coffee.
You were my favorite on Popcorn Roulette and now you're watching one of my all time favorite movies. You go, girl. You're right about this one. You can erase the memories, but not the feelings. Even crazy science fantasy can't take that away. My head canon says they got a second chance and they make it work this time, and maybe understand themselves a little better at the same time. Maybe I'm just a romantic. Keep the content coming.🙂

This is BY FAR Jim Carrey's best dramatic performance... And that's INCLUDING Man on the Moon... The absolutely INCREDIBLE documentary about the life of Andy Kaufman!! I just LOVE how the entire theme of this film is "fated love"... That even if you delete your memory of someone, there will still be a piece of you that remembers... Like at the end of the movie... When Joel and Clementine accept each others faults, understand that NOTHING will EVER be PERFECT... But they're willing to try again!! I imagine it doesn't matter how many times they have their memory wiped, THEY'LL ALWAYS END UP TOGETHER!!!
I see this movie as a puzzle, but all the pieces of the puzzle got dropped on the floor. There is no box to see what the image is supposed to be, so you don't know the final picture until the very end. The image is slowly assembled, out of order chronologically, before your eyes as the enigma is slowly revealed. I've watched a lot of reactors react to this movie, but you certainly picked up on the "beginning is the ending" twist and the Montauk beach connection quickly. Insightful!
This and American Beauty are both movies that very much defined or solidified who I am as a person when it comes to endings. I see so many people struggle with it, while I don't even struggle with death, and I know that is because of stories like this. Also, just to not come off as a psychopath, I had tears in my eyes reading the last pages of Anna Karenina because stories like this also show how easy it is to find meaning and how beautiful and terrifying it can be. I think that is why there was tears in the end.
Such an emotionally heartfelt reaction, not to mention the nuanced and thorough analysis! You've locked in another subscriber and I am looking forward to more of your reactions! Thank you
I could tell some stories about how this movie shaped my choices, maybe tricked me (with my help) into making mistakes, and ended up telling me how to embrace those choices and live my life properly. We do not lead perfect lives, and we should never forget those lives. Ever.
Both of them were amazing in this! The script was amazing. I watch this movie once every few years. It's one of those movies that surprises you just how good it is. Great reaction.
Probably my favorite movie of all time, for so many reasons. A bit of constructive criticism on a technical matter -- I assume the sound is distorted to avoid getting dinged for copyright infringment, but I think it may be overdone here. I couldn't make out half the dialogue. Anyway, wonderful movie choices so far and I wish you continued success.
32:39 "This would have been an awesome movie to make." Oh no no nooooooo. The behind the scenes of how intense Jim got trying to prepare almost literally broke him. It's gut-wrenching to see some of those clips of him going off the deep end, pouring himself fully into the part. Also, there's a couple of deleted scenes that completely change the context of the Joel character and would have made it a completely different movie. If ever you want to know the power of selective editing a film, watch those deleted scenes.
I first saw this movie as my marriage was ending and the divorce was in progress. It was such a cathartic experience and an affirmation that all of our memories and experiences make us who we are. Even though there was no going back to that relationship, it helped me to take forward with me the positive memories. We didn’t get the Joel/Clemenitine “let’s give it another chance” moment, but we both went forward without a tinge of regret of our time together. That matters to me, and to her, to this day. I will always treasure this film for that.
The writer has simply created one original theme that even Shakespeare never delved into, and I'm sure this fascinates and intrigues all psycho-analysts. Freud would have been blown away by seeing this played out in a story. We can now call Charlie Kaufman a genius.
Ooh nice, never seen _anyone_ "get it" that fast, I certainly didn't (saw this in the cinema and you could kinda feel the ripple as the audience hit a critical mass of penny dropping :). Such a wonderful movie. Painful and funny and beautiful. An _actual_ love story. Almost certainly top ten for me (I don't really _have_ "a top ten" but i'm pretty sure this is in it :). And a low-key _amazing_ cast. (when you were talking about the stars I thought "What about the Plough/Big Dipper, doesn't _everyone_ - at least in the Anglosphere - know it ??" then I remembered you're an Aussie and it's a northern constellation. Unlike Orion, depending on the season :)
I can literally remember being bathed in the sink, and also when I was 4 and too old to be bathed in the sink and I was upset about that. Very relatable.
I don’t know if any line in any scene better summarizes regret in love than “I wish I had stayed, I wish I had done a lot of things. I wish… I wish I’d stayed” This is consistently in my top 2 films ever, only joined recently at the top by “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”, which I consider a sister film in a lot of ways
The irony in scene pn the frozen river is that Kate was actually the one terrified while filming. She was scared to fall through the ice but was assured it wasn't going to happen. Theres a lot of fun facts about the movie.
I live on a narrowboat. During lockdown I started threading plastic bottle tops onto a string (I have 3 young grandchildren so that’s legit). A mate asked for a progress check, so I draped Lydia over a guitar and took a photo. When he requested a further update I re-staged the photo and got the reply “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”
that was wonderful, you picked up a lot of things on the first time. if you really want a kaufman film unchained then hopefully somebody pops in Synecdoche, New York, a movie about mortality. somebody gave him the keys to the car and wow is that movie dense. eternal sunshine is one my favorite films. the poem which is in a throwaway scene is exactly what the movie is about. is it better not to feel pain or to make new memories with both sorrow and joy? great channel, keep on making great content.
Truly one of the greatest films about love and relationships. How many films deal with the crap that develops between two people in a committed relationship and how the people decide to stay together even though they know that they're never going to escape their crap? It's a very mature treatment. Very poignant ending.
There's loads I love, it's my favourite film, but the bit I love most is Joel in the hallway, pleading for Clem to stay. Except it's all been erased. He has no big speech to make, no happier times to invoke, nothing to remind her of. Just. Wait.

It is a wonderful movie. The acting is so good; all of the actors are 100% believable in their roles. The music, the musical cues, the cinematography, direction and editing are all amazing.
Thank you!
You just watched a lot of people's favorite film.
Yup.
One of my favorite movies, and even more special to watch it with Coby's brilliant and insightful commentary!
Wisdom of the Coby: "You never fully get wiped." Amen, sister.
Agreed.
That's why I don't even bother with toilet paper anymore. Water only 💪🏻💩
"Man on the Moon", "The Truman Show" and "Eternal Sunshine" are his top 3 films.
This is one of my favorite movies!
Im glad I found your new channel. I saw this movie in theaters on a first date. Its a really heavy movie to see on a first date.
Omg a first date?! That must have been a really interesting conversation afterwards! You'll learn a lot about a person in 20 minutes of talking this film heading into a new situation!
I love reaction videos from my favorite movies, or showing friends, it’s the closest you can come to seeing it for the first time.
Girl, you figured it out real quick, I was pleasantly surprised at the end
i haven't seen this in so long. thanks for reacting to it. great thoughts and comments. i really think you'd like VANILLA SKY. it has a similar feel.
Cheers!
This film is partially why Charlie Kaufman is my favorite screenwriter. He’s got a great understanding of human behavior and interaction
Great story. I feel connected too. I've also taken the LIRR to Montauk in winter (before I saw the movie). Been on those same platforms.
Yes, this is the most beloved dramatic Jim Carrey movie next to Truman Show
I'm impressed you cracked the timeline mystery so early in the movie.
48:15
Joel: You said "so go" with such disdain ya know?
Clementine: Oh, I'm sorry...
It's so easy to get your feelings hurt in a relationship. It's hard to properly communicate and be "on" all the time.
Gotta say I am really impressed that you figured out the chronology of the movie that early (at 14:40)
14:38 - That is exactly it. You got it.
The initial spark is still there.
Your interpretation of this movie is excellent!
So many people think that Jim Carrey is very funny. I have always thought he’s a much better dramatic actor. He is so underrated when he does serious film films.
Man on the moon is a favorite
I enjoy your reactions, they're very authentic.
I like how it all came to a head in the hallway, and she said how things would be, how they would just go through the same cycle, and he said, "ok."
Good old Charlie Kaufman!
It's nice to see Cobles watching one of my favourite movies.
Wow you caught on to the timeline way quicker than I did!
Super thoughtful and intuitive reaction to a beautiful movie. Thanks for making it happen. Looking forward to many more.
Great reaction, Coby. Loved it.
I _relate_ to this movie soooo much.
My ex was also 'Naomi'.* Sadly no clementines, tangerines, satsumas ..or peaches have since popped into my consciousness : (
*...and she was a farkin' 'orrible see you next Tuesday. Glad to be rid of _those_ memories that's for sure.
Insightful!
Wonderful reaction Coby. Such a sweet movie.
Ever.
I loved the depiction of relation to people and the memories they trigger. We are a nexus of so many interactions.
Can you please check out the move Adaptation after this, its fantastic. Nicholas Cage plays Charlie Kaufman, the writer of this movie.
Amazing how you picked up on the chronology in real time - the pages from the diary, the orange hair, when they met. Amazing
you can watch this phenomenal movie over and over, and every time you'll take away something new.
I really enjoyed your genuine reaction to this underrated movie
Both of them were amazing in this! The script was amazing. I watch this movie once every few years. It's one of those movies that surprises you just how good it is. Great reaction.
All right! I have seen over 2000 films in my life. This is #29. So obviously love this film. Can’t wait to hear Coby take on this great film
pretty low
You know, you can erase memories but you can’t erase how you grow from someone. I feel like their second time around will be even better.
Hi Coby hope you are having an great and awesome day ❤
Probably my favorite movie of all time, for so many reasons.
2nd favorite movie of all time.
Woo hoo here we go
I first saw this movie as my marriage was ending and the divorce was in progress.
A masterpiece.
My friend, you have struck gold. Total hidden gem. One of my favs, if not my number one
The writer has simply created one original theme that even Shakespeare never delved into, and I'm sure this fascinates and intrigues all psycho-analysts. Freud would have been blown away by seeing this played out in a story. We can now call Charlie Kaufman a genius.
Hello Coby. This will be fun.
This is a masterpiece movie. The way they presented memories and how our mind works was incredible.
With the audio so low, subtitles would have been nice
Probably copyright issues and did you not notice the entire movie was mirrored, you wouldn't have been able to read the subs anyway.
Looking forward to this one Coby. You should add Sling Blade and Run Lola Run to your list.
I don’t know if any line in any scene better summarizes regret in love than
“I wish I had stayed, I wish I had done a lot of things. I wish… I wish I’d stayed”
This is consistently in my top 2 films ever, only joined recently at the top by “Everything, Everywhere, All at Once”, which I consider a sister film in a lot of ways
The irony in scene pn the frozen river is that Kate was actually the one terrified while filming. She was scared to fall through the ice but was assured it wasn't going to happen. Theres a lot of fun facts about the movie.
the eternal sunshine of Coby's aura
I love this movie so much
I live on a narrowboat.
One of my top 5 movies ever
that was wonderful, you picked up a lot of things on the first time. if you really want a kaufman film unchained then hopefully somebody pops in Synecdoche, New York, a movie about mortality. somebody gave him the keys to the car and wow is that movie dense. eternal sunshine is one my favorite films. the poem which is in a throwaway scene is exactly what the movie is about. is it better not to feel pain or to make new memories with both sorrow and joy? great channel, keep on making great content.
Even as I've evolved as a person, this movie has been consistently in my top 10, if not the top 5, movies I've seen.
Just. Wait.
Great reaction, what this film does is it shows you the honest heartbreak from a guys perspective and sometimes a relationship is worth fighting for.
Wow you picked up on a lot of things the first time. Things that took me a while to get lol My favorite movie nonetheless 🙂 Great review Coby!!
What a great laugh.
I wish I was as happy as Coby.
