While sea snakes are poisonous, so far only two people have died from them, that we know. My girl friend never lets me walk it tall grass in the Philippines. She has put the fear of the cobra in me for sure. Great advise about the door sweeps and foam. And like all things in the Philippines, finding a place that carries them is the challenge. I find it odd that thresholds aren’t a thing there and gave-up looking, as sweeps are so easy to install and can be carried in your suitcase for the hotel doors as they hug the door very tight and barely need a screw to stay attached. I was woken-up by a large cockroach on my leg one night and when I turned on the light, the damn thing flew. Didn’t think I could scream like a little girl, turns out I was wrong. And all the guys I was diving with kidded me for days.

During the wet season in Algerias Tazmalt region we had the scorpions all over the hotel room. Over 20 years in Africa and never seen anyone bitten by a snake. In South America we had tarantulas in the fire wood. In the Caribean i got dengue twice. In the South Pacific, especially on Guadalcanal, we had malaria. So, after over 30 years in Africa,South Pacific,South Africa and Asia I am still alive. Here in Phils we sometimes see a cobra in our garden, but very rarely. She is no treath to anyone.
I think people who worry about everything should rent a place next to a hospital with direct access to the emergency room.
People have to stop worrying. What is really killing people is junk food, being fat, eating processed food, pops and worrying.
What else is there to worry about? Meteorites? Flying soucers?

I have studies alot of white papers, and my team are yet to find any evidence or clinical trials that showed any benefits to vaccinations...! In fact, the clinical trials showed that unvaccinated people had superior immunity to testing of the subject matters listed on the white papers, do NOT take mine or anyones word for it, look them all up yourselves! - Now that I know the truth, detox is all I am focused on, and being careful here!
By the way, The black Caterpillars with the white spikes are NASTY here!, itches like hell and will take up to 4 weeks to heal! Use Castor Oil also with any itchy bites or stings, it is anti-parasitic and penetrates deep into the skin and cleans out any infection etc... For many other remedies like that, look up Barbara O'Niels video's as her stuff nails it!
Be careful, trust yourself and be diligent with your study into actual facts, do not believe everyone in white coats! Because money talks BS in many cases!

Another thing you have to worry about is rabies there. We had a dog that got it. … And, in a place like Quezon City, big rat problem. I have friends there and I avoid staying at their house. … We had cobras near our house in Antipolo but I never knew you could die that fast. Now you got me freaked out because I plan on building a tiny house out in the countryside when I get back. (We already got the land)

    Another good one Steve.
I'm going into my third year here and I've lived in 5 different Provinces.
I haven't seen a snake here yet. I know that they are here, but I haven't seen one.
    I haven't seen a spider here either.
Mosquitoes are not as bad here as the mosquitoes in North Central Ohio in July and August. I get bitten a lot less than I did in the U.S. but the ones here do carry more diseases than in the U.S. My 28 year old wife has only know one person that has gotten dengue fever in her lifetime. But that person did die from it.
Ants are the biggest problem that I have. I have to keep all food stuff in either the fridge or containers with tight fitting lids.
I rented a house in Southern Leyte that was infested with cock roaches. None of the other places that I have lived have had cock roaches. The cock roaches here are big and they fly. Once in a while one will fly into my apartment and I chase it until I kill it.
I actually had a giant bat fly into my head while out walking one evening. It nearly knocked my out and I had a lump on my head.
Steve's advice on the door sweeps is a good one. I don't have one on my apartment door and leave the door open at night. I don't see insects, other than ants in my apartment.
I do have a couple of small tan colored lizards that have shared my apartment for the last two years. They don't seem to bother anything and maybe that's why I don't see any insects?

Most places you'd get bit are 1 or maybe even 2 hours from the next hospital. And there, you'd have to wait for antivenom to be delivered from Manila or Cebu. Could take a day or two or worst and a few hours at best, if the copter is functional, ready and not busy otherwise. Don't get bit. Stay on trails.

But the Philippine Cobra doesn't need to bite you. It spits venom. There is also the dahumpalay, which is found in the rice fields. It is venomous. Kulambo (mosquito net) is good because it keeps mosquitoes from buzzing in your ear. Yucky big spiders, especially the ones that look like wood. Eeeeew!!!!! Geckos are okay, I leave them be. I remember playing with them. They were nice. Then the hantik (big red ants). Small ones are just annoying. The big rats are also scary. Our dachshunds used to catch and kill them. Toads are dangerous to our dachshunds, though.

I haven't found any official statistics on how many expats leave. Steve had an article that said 1/3 go back home, but the article didn't site any sources for that number.
I found an article that the author guesstimated that 50% return home, but this was his guess.
Of the two dozen or so expats that I have met in San Carlos City, none have went home in the two years that I have know them.
So I haven't been able to find any data on the true number that return home. I'm still searching for that information.

Philippine cobra has much stronger venom than king cobra but it doesn't have much. The king cobra has weaker venom but more quantity. I've run into a few cobras over the years and the solution is to stand completely still so after a while it slinks away. Since we and the neighbors started clearing the undergrowth, we have hardly had any snakes in the village.

Certainly the spiders and bugs enjoy 12 months of warmth, and are bigger due to it ! I remember freaking out when I saw one of their humongous cockroaches enter under the kitchen door there....AHHHH! - You need a mother in law living with your family there, as she has no hesitation or fear to take care of this problem ! The thing was the size of a small mouse, pretty big for a cockroach, it ran straight for under the fridge. My mother in law made a quick execution of the thing, thank God for Mother-in-laws talents! - Including cooking dinners!
The geckos; yea, they are fast and amazing ! They even run upside down across the ceiling ! When I first saw them, my impulse was to kill them, but the family said. " they are good and to leave them alone, because they clean the bugs in the house away by eating them". They also chase each other around your house, on the walls and ceilings and can be entertaining. Try to touch them, and they run really fast and the odd thing I found that amazed me is they chirp just like birds!
Snakes: I did not see any, but it amazes me how some Filipinos just walk through tall grass with no hesitation. I hesitate, and keep my eyes peeled to the ground for and potential encounters! I saw some really big spiders that are creepy, but mainly in trees, and one giant one in the hydro wires with a giant cobweb out in front of my in-laws house. Your making me reminisce about how much more fun it was to be in the Philippines.

Hey Steve, enjoy you channel. My biggest apprehension at living in the Philippines is the second most dangerous creature - the giant neighbor to your west and the large influx of their countrymen into these islands and waters recently. I hate to even bring it up to such a peaceful life, a life I would like to join, but when Jaws is swimming around your little boat it’s concerning. Other Vloggers have also mentioned it and it makes me worry about you guys. Am I being unreasonably concerned? I hope so. I’m sure there are US diplomatic factors going on behind the scenes w PI, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. Other than that, the mosquitos, jellies and snakes seem manageable. What do you think?

This is good information Steve. The King Cobra (which is really not a true Cobra but a species all it's own) will avoid people if at all possible, although the female can be aggressive if a person gets too close to her nest while she's watching her eggs. The venom isn't as potent as the Philippine Cobra, but the pure volume is much higher. The king also prefers other snakes as it's main diet, including other venomous snakes such as the Philippine, and Samar Cobra and pretty much anything else that slithers.
I've heard of a couple of Cobra deaths in the Philippines this year and I'm sure there have been many more. Hospitals not carrying the antivenom has resulted in a awful lot of deaths in the Philippines, and I think the big problem there is the cost per vial. Even if the Hospitals had it on hand, how many Filipinos would afford it as it sometimes takes multiple vials to save someone?
If a person has a snake problem they probably have a rodent problem as that's what the snakes for the most part prefer to feed on.
The only exception is the King which prefers and feeds mainly on other snakes. There is a good Facebook group with lots of info and I believe it's called Snakes of the Philippines. It's very informative, and probably a good group for anyone living or visiting the Phil.

Coral snakes have the strongest venom and i think they get their name from their colour red black and yellow bands ..Some have no venom but look the same Remember. Red on yellow kills the fellow....luckily they have small mouths and are timid

While in the woods here and if you hear a hissing sound stay away right away for it is a cobra snake hissing its way looking for prey for food.

I think her family lived on bohol. there was another YT vlogger (american with filipina wife) who lived in bohol and found either a king cobra or philipine cobra in their back yard). plus someone put a comment on here that they are on bohol. I think I now have no desire to live on bohol.

Gecko in the house? Nope, no thanks.
That's the last thing i want to hear in my house in the middle of the night.
Especially during a blackout when it's dead quiet otherwise.

You won't hear them, gheckos are real quiet, and they eat bugs, spiders and flies etc.

I was on a small island in northern Samar in a small resort.I had woke up very early like 5 am and went outside on the balcony to smoke,i felt something on my arm and by the time i looked i got bitten and saw a little black spider the size of a penny ,it climb my arm at the speed of light and bitten me a second times before i wipe it out...
So i got two red swollen spots on my arm the size of a quail eggs with two punctures point on thems.

They always try to tell you what they think you want to hear but all will be revealed if you ever boots on the ground in the PH. Propaganda can never superceed actuality and all expats amd travelers find that out at thier own pace

The king cobra is not aggressive will usually avoid people. It will only strike as a last resort. It's actually a chill snake. The smaller spitting cobra and Philippines cobra ate aggressive and are quick to bite.
