    I just finished a 2 week trip to Mahayag, in Zamboanga Del Sur. I asked my GF, and her Father about snakes. They said there are no snakes around there. I am sure they are there, they are just used to it. There were many rice patties and coconut/palm tree farms there. Very beautiful country. Quiet at night. My first visit there. All my previous visits were to suburbs and major cities. Concrete and hollow block cities. Useful advice, thank you.

    Great info, most important is to remove food source via food chain. Bird seed =mice=snake.
    The PH has some of the most venomous snakes in the world.
    These are not your native Copperhead snakes in the US.
    Thanks for posting.

    Round some places they got dogs that will track a snake. If they have them around there I would definitely get it to go through your friends house , him having a child

    Or, you can live near the city that doesn't have that much vegetation where they like. I hate snakes with a passion. Strange because as a boy I use to chase garden snakes and water moccasins. Wasn't until I moved from Boston to California where rattle snakes are everywhere. I was working on my computer and looked out my window to see a huge king snake staring at me while it was poised on a bench under the window. Freaked out was not even close to describing it. Since then, I choose to live the city life and in the Philippines, I can't think of a better way not to indulge with snakes. Good luck to those who venture in the wild. Hahaha

    Good subject Steve. Not only is the antivenom rare with not many places having any but the price for one vial is astronomical and I've heard of some cases where it took 25 - 30 vials to save the person.
    A vloggers I follow in Mindanao asked about the availability at their local hospital and was told the nearest antivenom was in Davao about 2 hours away and that doctor said in his 7 years in that hospital that every snake bite victim that came in had died.

    • @marcrichard7251
      @marcrichard7251 Рік тому +5

      Tim some do survive but anti venom is only in the large city private hospital’s like in Cebu and Manila….my girlfriend’s brother- in- law was bitten by a small snake and almost. Dumaguete had no anti venom he was in a coma but he got lucky because I paid for a private hospital cost me $1,600 US dollars.

    • @timsretirementjourney8323
      @timsretirementjourney8323 Рік тому

      @@marcrichard7251 lucky it was a small snake (quite possibly one with weaker venom). Glad he was able to survive.
      There are so many species of venomous snakes here. We hear mostly about Cobras but the Pit Vipers and some of the lesser thought about can be really bad too.

    When the tile to your video popped up on my phone I thought you were going to talk about venomous female snakes..hehe.. I am in my late 60s and I know a thing or two about female venomous snakes from experience.. I am also living and was born and raised in south Louisiana living on the bayou for over 25 years until I got flooded out in 2016.. I know a thing or two about alligators and snakes so I will feel at home in the Philippines and I guess I will just miss the alligators..hehe.. the bayou actually ran through my backyard and my new girlfriend started feeding the alligators and I did not know anything about it.. I came outside one morning and two alligators was laying up by my concrete slab where I parked my car.. they were about 6 or 7 ft long.. I went to the house and got a shotgun and shot in the air and shot around them because I did not feel like killing one and cleaning it.. my girlfriend came running out and said what are you doing, i said I'm running the alligators back in the bayou.. she said I have been feeding them every day up in the yard.. I said are you crazy, I said quit feeding them because they do not know the difference in what you are feeding them and you because you are food to them also.. after she quit feeding them they quit coming but I had to keep a sharp eye out especially when I walked outside at night.. I wish you would take a trip in the jungle and do some video because I've never seen anybody in the Philippines actually go into the jungle and film The wildlife.. maybe you could take a Filipino guide along with you and I think it would make a great video.. I know you are a Boston city boy so maybe that's something I should do after I arrive because I have experiences with swamps and alligators and snakes.. I always enjoy your videos..thanks.. hello from south Louisiana and I will be there in the Philippines in a couple of
    months👍👍👌😎🤗🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊🐊😱😱🤠

    Great info Steve! I will also add to personally check in the area you will be living, the hospitals if they stock anti-venom. At least you will know your options if you get bit. I can only speak for Bali and there is only one anti-venom that will be effective (for the spitting cobra) available for the six venomous snakes on the island. With that said, antidote has a short shelf life. Another reason to have excellent health insurance folks!

I've never felt so weak and shaky. Today, a friend of ours from the States, a Philippino doctor stopped by and he gave me an antibiotic for the bowels. Lemon grass is a VERY useful deterrent against both snakes and spiders. They absolutely hate it!! I don't want either around me when I'm there so planting that stuff will be priority number 1 for me. But even venomous snakes hate to he around us and 9 times out of 10 will just slither away. To them we giants so yeah I would prolly slither away as well were the shoe on the other foot. Also from what I've learned over the years (with the exception of only a couple of more aggressive breeds) snakes only attack when they feel cornered or threatened. One things for sure I will have at the very least a Rattan stick with me at all times for such encounters whether it be snakes 🐍 stray dogs 🐕 or even the human variety of snakes lol
    Not considered a weapon so the PNP should not have a problem with it hopefully.
    Good talk Steve 👍

    It’s mainly the same advice for mice/rats…… since they eat rodents…… no food and no water and you will have less snakes. So dont leave food out, dont leave water out, if you have pets dont leave food/water out for them. Feed them at a specific time then remove the food after a half hour if they dont eat it. Second, get rid of the excess crap they can hide in. They like dark safe places so if you have excess “crap” piled up in your home either box it up and storage it or get rid of it. Third, chickens are a problem since you leave food and water out for them plus the chicks and eggs are food for them too. So chickens attrcat snakes. That being said adult chickens, dogs, and cats may also help defend you from snakes since they are enemies. But you may lose your pet or livestock to a snake attack too which can be emotional. Last, snakes do not like noise. Learn to “walk heavy” since they feel the vibration in the ground and you are less likely to surprise the snakes. If they know you are coming they are likely to want to hide and not attack sicne they are not surprised. You arnt food but the snakes are scared of us since we are big and they attack in self defense. So be a little noisy so they will back off on their own.

    Wow !.. you just touched on one of my pet peeves.. ( no pun intended)… I have a great aversion to snakes 🐍 and have been known to chop them up with my machete 😅… a very poisonous snake once got aboard my sailboat in Guatemala up a Jung river ( Rio Dulce) and I had to chop it in two ( it slithered overboard or I would have chopped it more! ) I worried mostly about my dog aboard because he slept on the deck topside…. I awoke by the screams of my girlfriend telling me to grab the machete quickly!.. ( what a hell of a way to wake up )….. and I have a half a dozen other snake stories from my travels throughout the tropics…. I asked my girlfriend in the Philippines about snakes in her area ( Bayawan city) but she doesn’t seem to know that much about it … anyhow, what I told her is that if we’re going to live out of the town in the nearby mountains then I definitely want to get some chickens and other fouls for our property area ( Guinea hens , chickens, pea cock etc) because they’re vigilant and spot snakes well and then peck them or kill them… I may even decide to get a couple of pet mongoose to be inside the house 😂…. Great information brother!

    Glad you Mention Grass. Snakes Love Hiding in Tall Grass and Weeds. If you Ren't, I Suggest Talking to your Land Lord to Allow you to Remove Almost All Grass. Instead, Use Low Growing Ground Cover. It has Many Benefits. 1) Snakes are Less Likely To be Found in it, as it's Very Short
    2) It's Quite Drought Resistant so if you went for a Period of Time Without Rain( not Typical in the Philippines) just Saying, It'll hold up well.
    3) Never Needs Cutting so you save on Gas, Time, Mower Repairs , Etc.
    4) Can Contain Flowers that Attract Butterflies and other Nature. Helps With Ground Run Off.
    Anyway the Gravel, Thanks , I didn't think About this ,But Makes Perfect Sense Since it's Rough on their Bellies.
    Peppermint is Good at Keeping many Smaller Creatures Away.
