I changed the title back and forth. I'm just keeping the original for right now. I'm trying to find the most accurate title for what I'm presenting, which I find a bit tough since I'm still working on my second video. I have a lot to say and I it was very eye opening for me to travel to a developing country for the first time. I've lived in two very wealthy G7 countries my entire life, so I guess I could say I had some "culture shock" getting a brief glimpse into the lives of those who weren't as fortunate as my family. Probably my biggest takeaway is that I think there are so many things that I take for granted while living in Canada and Japan. Like we complain about our corrupt government, and I think we should always push our politicians to do better, but I think we may not realize how well our governments run. Infrastructure, safety, a clean environment; these are examples of things the average person doesn't worry about, allowing us to focus on higher level wants. I wish I could have taken my kids along with me so that they could realize how lucky they have it. But I also feel guilty for saying that, because it sounds so condescending. Since my trip, I've been contemplating on what I could do to help people in situations less fortunate than my own. I honestly feel a bit helpless, since I think what's most needed is some big infrastructure projects that I could never help with like sanitation and transportation. For example, I was thinking about doing some more Kiva loans, but in the big picture, what will be the effect of helping someone fix up their Jeepney be? I have no doubt it'd be good on an individual level, but I feel like the real solution to transportation issues around Metro Manila requires government involvement. I'm not saying the government has to control the whole space, but someone needs to have a better plan and be able to arrange for the financing needed to transform the current situation. However, having read several news stories and studies, I also know it's just not that easy. The agency in charge not only doesn't have the funds, but they also face strong opposition from anyone who could be hurt from changing the status quo. The poor family relying on the tiny income they get from driving a Jeepney doesn't want to see anything happen that jeopardizes their family's well being. I'll say one thing though, which was the heartwarming part of the trip: the families. It was really nice to see how close the families were and how supportive they were of each other. The sacrifices being made, whether it's a parent who goes off working overseas to support the family, or the older sister that's now paying for the education of her younger siblings. Or even just the small things, like the father and daughter showing me their gardens or another father and daughter shopping together. I could really feel the closeness. And they were close, because in both instances they lived a minute away from their parents. If there's one stereotype that I think is true, it's that Filipinos are really quite friendly and hospitable. I have a feeling that despite wanting my next video to be in the 20-30 minute range, I might just make it longer so that I can take the time to really get through all the stories I heard and what my whole thought process was. That was my first time trying to tell a few stories from another country, so I'm still learning how to best make videos about my experiences. All the best, Greg
Very informative and genuine observations. Thank you for featuring the Philippines on your channel.

@@sempergunnze6398 lmao what? Are you saying that a glimpse of life in Manila is not the same as a glimpse of life in the Philippines? Hahahaha. You're funny.
I’m a Filipino and I’ve been to different countries before. You know what I realized? That Filipinos deserve better. We have the most beautiful sceneries, abundant natural resources, and most hardworking people. But since politicians don’t care about the citizens, good governance is rare. Can’t expect people from poverty to be disciplined and to follow all the rules when there are people in power who can’t even do their jobs.
The government is killing the beauty of this country. If only we can replace our leader with leader with Japanese or nordic values just for one year, our economy will boom exponentially. We have so much to offer. But the government just dont care. Politicians are greedy!
To be honest we have some similar aspects as japan. One thing is that our roads our both small, and our cities are both densely populated, and we are both down to earth (kinda).
This is one of the most accurate videos about the Philippines that I have ever seen. I love how you're showing the good and bad sides of my country, since most videos are all about our tourist spots and our beaches and not the ones that actual ordinary Filipinos live by.
I'm from South Africa and I'm writing a book, one of my characters is Filipino and I was wondering if you wouldn't mind helping me out? I want to accurately represent him, so it would be awesome if you were to reply :).
That is some brutally honest portrayal of the Philippines. Both the good and the bad. I wish my countrymen would really stop littering. Awesome videos Sir!
Joseph Narvaez 😂😂😂. My parents taught me to be always thankful and always appreciate all the things ( big or small) that were given to me. He could have just said, “Thank you for all the tons and tons of gifts that I’ve received.” I appreciate the thoughts and the time. Instead of I got too many gifts, I had to give it away to the guards ( paraphrasing). Naintindihan mo na?
Joseph Narvaez 😳🙄👎 different kind of thinking?. Culture or background?. Wow! What a lame excuse! Can’t think of a language which doesn’t have a word “ Thank You”. Did this vlogger say thank you for the gifts? I don’t remember ( hope I’m wrong) . I remember him saying thank you to the people that helped him “ you know who you are” 😂😂😂.
I shouldn't have watched this. Now I want to get back to the Philippines. I'm a whitey and native of Southern California and fell in love with the Philippines years ago. I go every chance I get. It's refreshing to see that there are a few Filipinos in the comments section who are happy that this video shows the side of the Philippines that are very rarely shown in other UA-cam videos. But still there are those who only want you to see the good side of Philippines. I believe that's what those "It's better in the provinces" comments are. There's already a million videos on Boracay, Palawan, Cebu already. Just go to them if you don't want foreigners seeing the other side. Also, there is still poverty in the provinces. Poverty must have been a by-gone issue if only corrupt leaders are not elected. Filipinos have long been fully developed if not these leaders putting premium on politicking and blame-throwing and not on development research and innovation. The security helps a lot with at least the visibility. And they can be really helpful when you have a concern. I think it dramatically heighened back in 2000 when terrorists targeted several locations in the city, a train station, buses, airport, a plaza, etc. Everyone was scared to go out after that. The gov and business sec then started to place several armed securities in their establishments so to "assure" people they're doing their best. They were very thorough before. You can't even bring items like liquids with you when riding trains, they'll have you open sealed packages before the x-rays. But then laxed a few years later. But the security guards just sticked and became a norm throughout the country. It helps negate some threat, i mean if i was a bomber, I'd think twice before entering an establishment with an armed guard vs batoned guards i guess. The roosters are basically your racoons or squirrels but used to cockfighting and as food. 😆 Malling is popular because they provide air-conditioning. We don't like the heat and sweat, and getting sunburnt. The suki system always works in these public markets. They're basically someone who you frequently buy from, in return they'll give discounts, the best cuts and special offers.

I can’t believe how similar the Philippines is with Indonesian culture. Filipino culture is Asian, our cuisine- like most Asian countries rice is the staple food , languages, folklore, way of life, and people are majority genetically Asian. Language is the most basic and most important element in a culture. The Languages of the Philippines are all Austronesian languages and a close cousin of both Malay varieties in Malaysia, Brunei and Indonesia. Spanish loan words make up only a small proportion and many have been converted into Filipino versions. Hispanic influences are Christianity, surnames, etc Even “Filipino Catholicism” is actually “Folk catholicsm “ a combination of the religion the Spanish brought and the local animist and traditional beliefs.. many traditions from indigenous Philippine folk religions have been integrated into the local practice of Catholicism and Islam, resulting in "Folk Catholicism. The conservative traditionalist superstitious culture are all products of an Asian culture. Consider it like Britain's relationship to India. A lot of people have made this vlog a mess by commenting how he wasn’t grateful with the way he was treated, but you all need to consider, this is a 25-minute video only showing a few minutes of his entire journey here in the Philippines. He might have said thank you behind the camera. He might have said nice things to those he encountered. He might have, all behind the camera. So saying things negative about him shows more about your character tbh. I’ve been watching his channel for years now, and knowing how he takes careful insight about his topics, he knows how to appreciate and learn from his videos.
This is a very detailed, unbiased and informative style of vlogging/documentary, thumbs up for the great video. You really researched very well, just wow 👌✔️✨ Felt like I'm taking my Philipine history subject + Social science which is really enjoyable 💕
but he exposes to the world what Filipinos should not be proud of, this is usually the work of people from rich countries. To find something wrong in poor countries and disguise it as "informational"
Raphael Datul i don’t have problem with what he showed,it’s there so it’s true. I took offense to the way he presented his vlog as if Philippines is the only country that got problems. He compared it to Japan and Canada which are first word countries. He’s an ignorant fool who didn’t bother to do a little research. Oh well, I think its his first time to travel abroad. I hope he dont go to italy or those bambinos would have a feast with this ignorant condescending fool.
@@juandelacuz9456 Hi, thanks for the reply. The problem is, there is nothing in Philippine poverty that the world doesn't already know, fact of the matter, exaggerated at times. Although the Philippines is dirty, impoverished and still developing and has decades to go, the people are amazing and so friendly and polite and respectful and I never feel uncomfortable or threatened when I'm there. Just because it looks nasty and bad doesn't mean it is, the people make a country not its government or appearance

But nothing ever happen to me l am a tall guy 6,2 f ,typical Scandinavian looking l road the train in Manila many times and l went on a jeepney all alone also . okay we also did Grab like him in this video mostly because my wife wanted this l did taxi alone no problem at all. we also went to my wife home town in Dipolo in Mindanao and everybody warn me about this also, but nothing happen to me at all and l really love the people there so friendly. If you behave like a normal person then you will not have any problem in the Philippines. l might say that l do not drink alcohol at all and l normally do not stay out so late maybe that is it but if you get into problem it is mostly your own fault and that can happen everywhere in the world. l recommend the Philippines to everybody 10 times better then Thailand
As a foreigner in the Philippines, the one thing I couldn’t get over is how long things take. Everybody works like it is their first day. We barely made our flight and we got to the airport four hours early.
All the best,
Greg

I’m a Filipino and I’ve been to different countries before. You know what I realized? That Filipinos deserve better. We have the most beautiful sceneries, abundant natural resources, and most hardworking people. But since politicians don’t care about the citizens, good governance is rare. Can’t expect people from poverty to be disciplined and to follow all the rules when there are people in power who can’t even do their jobs.

To be honest we have some similar aspects as japan. One thing is that our roads our both small, and our cities are both densely populated, and we are both down to earth (kinda).

Grew up and born in Tondo. Passed Tondo church daily on my walk from Sande back and forth to Divisoria to take the jeep to Quiapo to attend school. Did enjoyed my first 24 years there. Ate at carinderia near the old FEU. You would not appreciate Tondo unless you grew up there. Still missed the old days. Unfortunately I was denied re-entry back to Philippines by the government due to my Taiwan visa at that time(never been to Taiwan). It looks like I am destined to grow old in USA. I have been inside the Tondo Church a lot of times when it was abandoned and not yet renovated.
Haha amen

Filipinos in the Philippines should watch this video to learn more about the country and society.
Eye-witness documentaries are enough. They're far, far more eye-opening than this.

I spend 1-2 months there per year . I love it and even as American I feel at home. Honestly I feel more at home there than I do here. I spent my first Christmas there in 2018 , and went back in September 2019. I'll be going back again soon . The best thing is I always stay a full month each time and I deeply enjoy it !
Thank you for loving our country! On the other hand, we are planning to go to the US this year. We have been to Canada before and really enjoyed it there (just like you, I felt at home there, I dont know why). Hope that your country will be welcoming as well to us!
@@kewl800i the odd thing about America is that nobody will know you're a tourist .. unless you tell someone you'll be just as American and treated American as the rest of us . We have so many different races and cultures here that you'd literally have to tell someone you're a tourist . You'll definitely enjoy it here but you better have some money and I mean alot of it especially if you're converting PHP to USD. I love the Phillipines and I'll be going back soon.
Same here a month is enough, in the US I felt completely at home and not many people asked where I came from. I am originally from the Netherlands, but in the US I was not treated as a tourist like I am in the Philippines.
@@robertwood3172 Now that you mentioned it, that reminds me of an incident in Canada - waiters are asking me how was the food we were eating. I said that it was "larger" than what is usually served in the Phils. That was only the moment our waiters said "so you're tourists??" Haha.
As to money, we got that covered. I am more worried with the issuance of visa - I heard/read online that people get denied despite the fact that they have enough money and reason to go back to their home country. Oh well, we'll just wait and see how it goes.
@@kewl800i and that's exactly how it is. I'm honestly glad it's that way it makes things alot more comfortable for a person who's in a foreign country.. when I go to the Phillipines I honestly feel like the way a celebrity would especially since the women there are use to older white men ... I'm actually 31 6ft 3 and attractive so needless to say it was overwhelming the first trip the second trip I adapted very well and actually knew what to expect. I have a Filipina (the only one I visit ) that I go and have a great time with and it's also good because she knows the native language which helps me out alot when I'm out in the mix . I hope you have a great time here just know that some stuff will be alot cheaper and some stuff will be crazy priced.. as I've noticed a TV here for instance is really cheap while the same TV in the Philippines can go up to 5 or maybe even 10 times the price.
Thanks for sharing unique perspective of your travels to the Philippines, can't wait for your follow up video.

Thanks for the honesty! I hope Filipinos would learn to live in the modern ways and stop littering and take care of their environment.
That’s gonna take thousands of years. Too many lazy individuals there. Everything is tomorrow or later. Though, they have one of the best caring culture towards the elders/sick people. and most of the times they’re happy even if they don’t have much to show for. They just to practice one child policy in that country for the next 30 years to slow down the process of overpopulation. And, they need to impose proper taxation so the the country can be prosperous . And those tax should watch closely and utilize to improve structural old building and modernize the living condition there.
It took the West several legislations to teach that to their folk. And kings liked their rules followed. That's why the American republic sometimes doesn't look as great as in the postcards. I mean, "american littering" is just two keywords away. You can replace the "american" keyword with others too.

I am from Vietnam. I want to visit the Phillipines for around 3 weeks to explore the country
I hope you'll have fun!
Go to Cebu not Manila. It's still a city but with connection to the nature and rural areas.
Good luck. You need to have loads of patience.
Visit Los Banos in Town in Laguna Province, around 2 hours bus from Pasay City in Metro Manila area. Lots of Vietnamese students here studying about agriculture and related fields in University of the Philippines Los Banos branch. I think we even have one or two Vietnamese restaurants run by some of those who fled during Vietnam war and resettled here.
You will need more than 3 weeks just to get through the traffic
I want to go to the Philippines now. As a Latino man, I think I would feel very much at home there. A lot of this reminded me of my own home country. And I think the Filipino girls are extremely cute! OMG! 🌹 those apartment cemeteries made me sad though. It’s a terrible thing when there is such poverty and there’s so little space that you can’t bury your loved ones in the ground and go visit them without climbing like that. It must be very hard on an old person who loses their lifelong spouse to go visit them. 😔
The Philippines is relatively similar to Latin American countries but just located in Asia. You hear people speaking local languages and also English. Every 4th word you hear in the local language is a word of Spanish origin. The Catholic churches would also make you feel home and the food is a mix of Asian and Hispanic cuisines too.
@@itsmeferny funny story about my first encounter with Filipino food. I had heard stories about how they like to eat a lot of internal organs. Not my thing. So, I was a little hesitant to try the food. I finally got up the nerve and I ordered some thing that said it was lechon kawali. I don’t know what the second word means but, the first word is a Spanish word for suckling pig which is a really tender meat and very delicious. So I got that. I was already for something new and strange and exotic. What arrived on my plate was very like something we call chicharrones where I come from which is pork skin and pork meat fried in its own fat. It’s one of my favorite things ever but it’s really bad for you. Anyway, they were amazing and delicious but it wasn’t strange. It was mixed feeling. I was hoping for a new experience but found something very familiar that I really liked. My cousins laughed at me when I told them what it was like to eat Filipino food. Now, they want to try it.
Problem solved. Cremation for me !

To those Filipinos who say that the video only shows Manila and not the whole of the Philippines have to remember that people residing and working in Manila are from the provinces. If you feel embarrassed because of some negative but true realities shown in the videos, you should ask yourself why there are still who go to Manila despite of what has been shown in the videos.
Exactly.

This was one of the most authentic videos I have ever seen of the beautiful Philippines and best of all I could watch it without the jumping, bumping sickening motion . You must have a very good camera that cancels out the motions.. I lived there for 18 years and it was the best time of my live.
Malling is popular because they provide air-conditioning. We don't like the heat and sweat, and getting sunburnt.
The suki system always works in these public markets. They're basically someone who you frequently buy from, in return they'll give discounts, the best cuts and special offers.
I've lived in Manila, Philippines most of my life. This video accurately depicts the poor / difficult life in Manila. Would recommend another video to show the city's other facets.

Here's a factual note about the PNR you just rode. The PNR is the oldest train line in Southeast Asia, built in 1885.
the country could have had network stretching Luzon but it was left to rot sad to say.
Correction po not the oldest train line or railway in Southeast Asia.
“ On 7 June 1864, Governor General Baron Sloet van den Beele initiated the first railway line in Indonesia on Kemijen village, Semarang, Central Java. It began operations on 10 August 1867 in Central Java and connected the first built Semarang station to Tanggung for 25 kilometers.”

There are just numerous bubbles of resistance and self-preservation that prevented a complete takeover unlike most of Latin America. Filipino cuisine bears undeniable similarities to the cooking styles of its neighbouring countries,
