    He deserves much more respect and attention than what he gets

    The crazy thing is that Woody Harrelson was 24 when he was cast as Woody Boyd and now he is a year younger than Nicholas Colasanto when he died.

    This is one of my favourite Coach gags.
    Completely missing the point of a gag, but in doing so he totally finds awe and respect for someone for something they don't deserve. Like he's being so... slow here. But he just loves this man so much and is so impressed by the fact that he played baseball 'blind' that it's sweet.

    The season was still in the middle of filming when Colasanto died but he had been too ill to work for a while before he passed. This was actually filmed much earlier in 1984 and was picked up off the cutting room floor so they could give him a proper sendoff in the season finale rather than have the character just disappear.

    The thing is, this was not even a scene that was supposed to be used. It was something cut from an episode, and put as a bumper 3 weeks after Nick died.

    • @miroslavtomic7038
      @miroslavtomic7038 3 роки тому

      Carla is obviously not pregnant in this scene, even though she was pregnant at that stage of the series, just like Rhea Perlman was in real life. This scene was obviously filmed alot earlier.

  • @gregoriah.blackacre2613
    @gregoriah.blackacre2613 9 років тому +29

    Colasanto hadn't appeared in the two previous episodes and this, I suppose, was the show's way of saying goodbye. He had been looking more and more frail during the course of the season, so I could never figure out why he looked healthier in this clip. Jonah Falcon has probably supplied the answer. Colasanto was also an accomplished director - check out his credits on IMDB. It was a great loss for the show when he died, but they lucked out when they cast Woody Harrelson.

      Colasanto instructed Danson that he was the leader of the bar, and should act like it, before a single scene was shot. He was directing even when James Burrows was the director of episodes.

  • @miroslavtomic7038
    @miroslavtomic7038 3 роки тому +9

    This was Coach's final scene that was aired, but it is totally not the last scene he filmed. It is actually an leftover scene from an earlier episode that was cut. One small detail gives this away - you can very obviously see that Carla was not pregnant in this scene, even though she was (like Rhea Pearlman was in real life) pregnant at the time of the filming of the episode where they put this scene into. Technically, this was Coach's final on-screen appearance, but it was obviously not the final scene he ever filmed.

    I hate how the cast and crew, besides John Ratzenberger, weren't allowed to take a few days out of filming to fly to Rhode Island for Colasanto's funeral. Coach was a great man to work with and have as a friend, I'm sure. You can thank NBC for the strong-arm arrangement. I wish they had all agreed to walking out.

      I remember the week following his passing they played the Episode "The Coach's Daughter" from very early Season One. Before the opening clip Ted Danson made the comment "This episode of Cheers is dedicated to the life of Nicolas Colasanto" ...and that was pretty much all the recognition he received. Although Woody Harrelson stepped in and performed very well it hurt a bit without Colasanto's brilliant timing and facial expressions.

    • @lonewolfattack8071

      They had to film episodes out of order that season because they were hiding Shelley being an 8-months-along blimp. So the Europe trip shows were shot while they were still able to pretend she wasn't pregnant. Because of that, they had one show in the can with Colasanto in it (not counting this originally-cut scene that was rescued off the cutting room floor to honor him) that hadn't run yet. It was either throw it out, or do what they did and pretend he was somewhere else until the season was over. He was honored on the show in little ways, maybe not in "8 Simple Rules" "OH MY GOD I CAN'T BELIEVE JOHN IS DEAD!! LORD, TAKE ME INSTEAD!!!!!" ways. NBC were certainly cretins with regards to the whole situation -- though they did at least have the decency to pull the first-run episode scheduled for that week, one of the ones he couldn't be in, and replace it with a repeat that he was Emmy-nominated for. They were duly punished with the one-two death punch on two other hit series (Selma Diamond, "Night Court", Dolph Sweet, "Gimme a Break!").

    This episode honored the memory of Nicholas Colasanto but it wasn't his last filmed scene. It's actually the last televised episode with the Coach in it. It's comprised of a much earlier in the year filmed scene which hadn't been previously televised showing him obviously in much better health. The episode "Cheerio Cheers" is the actual last filming of the actor playing Coach. Nicholas Colasanto sadly died just two days after this episode was filmed. He was a great actor and director

      NBC wouldn't allow the rest of the cast to attend the funeral as it would mean a delay in filming schedule. Therefore, they only allowed Ratzenberger to attend, while the rest of the cast and the crew paid their tributes privately on the set on the day of the funeral.

      +Jonah Falcon But when it was finally acknowledged in the Season 4 premiere, it was pretty much just, "Coach? Oh, he passed away." That was pretty much the extent of it. No big send-off for the character or anything like that (as we got for Phil Hartman on _NewsRadio_ or Mr. Hooper on _Sesame Street_ , for example).
