    As with all these early videos, I offer a lot of bad/incorrect information based on a misunderstanding of aviation technique and regulations. These videos are merely a documentation of the learning process, and shouldn’t be used as a reference for anything. Feel free to comment with questions, but talk to a flight instructor for legitimate advice.

    Actually I found it easier to fly in real life, because I could feel the airplane. Like a car game it is easier to drive in real life. I took a flight a couple weeks ago same as you, but was able to takeoff fly and land with no help. The instructor even asked me how many flight hours I had in already. I told him I have flown around 10-20 hours a week for 25 years, so over 20,000 hours in simulators and a little over 50 hours in real life but 90% of those were in a crop duster when I was 16-18, I am now 46. The greatest experience I have found in VR was a motion simulator it was the closest to real life, being able to feel the plane even with it's limited bank, in the VR headset it made the banks feel like more.

      Your motion sim is not really giving the real flying forces like real.. So if you think you "taught yourself" to fly that way you didnt, you learned wrong or you taught yourself to feel the airplane wrong.

    • @ComdrStew
      @ComdrStew 3 роки тому +1

      @@russellburnup1939 You're correct it is easier to fly IRL, because you can feel the plane. The motion simulator gets it close, but nothing is like the real thing. Same with a car motion sim. It is easier to drive a real car than a simulated car.

    Back when I was learning to fly, my CFII suggested I should practice my IFR through flight sim, and I will tell you that it helps a lot. This was 15 to 16 years ago. I may have to beef up my PC for Xplane and upgrade my Oculus from DK2

    • @FlightHours
      @FlightHours  5 років тому +5

      falloutpictures Awesome! Yeah, the sim should be especially useful for IFR. With the Oculus VR - being able to look around - the whole experience really transfers over even for VFR flying. It’s helped me learn to divide my attention and look for landmarks that I wouldn’t be able to see looking straight ahead. I just realized this teardrop-shaped field we use as a landmark in the pattern shows up in VR - so cool.

    You guys keep asking: “Did you really land it on your own on your first lesson?”
    The instructor lined up the approach and managed the power & flaps on the way down - that’s a huge part of flying & landing that I didn’t have to manage here. And the instructor kept his hands on the controls for safety, as mentioned. But yes, I had the flight controls, and the VR training transferred over - I’d learned through trial and error how not to balloon or strike the nose wheel (although the landing was pretty flat). I’ve flown with a few instructors now, and the young ones who grew up on flight sims agree that aspects of that practice transfer over.
    Also, this was my “first proper lesson,” but not my first flight. You’re required to take an initial “discovery flight” where you’re essentially just a passenger, but you might get to handle the controls at a safe altitude if your instructor feels comfortable (ua-cam.com/video/tv8JaRulCOA/v-deo.html). I was lucky enough to get some hands-on time and demonstrate that I could hold an altitude and descend at a stable rate - again, because of flight sim practice.
    It’s also worth noting that we had no traffic and unusually calm winds.

      Dave, thank you for the thank-you! A year after making this and 70hr into training, I’d say this analysis still holds true. Sim landings are perpetually on easy-mode, but learning to divide attention transfers over to real-world. I really like that I can pop into the sim and get familiar w a new airport before a flight, especially with X-Plane spoofing GPS location to ForeFlight on the iPad, very, very cool. X-Plane leaves a lot to be desired, I’ll be honest... I finally set up the OrthoXP real-world terrain plugin and it was an enormous disappointment, performance was garbage, and it looked terrible; I wiped and reinstalled the sim. I’ve also found that the plugin to view your iPad in VR taxes performance severely and creates stability issues, so I just lift my VR goggles to look down at the iPad.
      I‘m extremely excited for the new Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 too!

You’re going to be spending a lot of time together and you’re going to pay a lot of money, so it’s your choice who you train with. I’ve flown with 4 instructors and I’m incredibly lucky to have stumbled across a guy who I get along with and who really knows his stuff - if he takes a day off and I get paired w another instructor on the schedule I cancel. I’m coming up on 80hr (and $20k) put toward the real-life private pilot license so that’s been eating all my time and money. But after that it’s on to the instrument training phase and I’ll be back in the sim for that one.
      Hey, why don’t you make some videos of your sim performance? GeForce Experience is installed automatically, I think it’s ctrl+windowsKey by default to start recording... just check the settings about recording full screen and including mic. Very cool! I've got some major hours on Wii Sports but I'm still awful at table tennis (and even worse at golf & bowling). • @t1000v20
      @t1000v20 5 років тому

      @@FlightHours oh yes what was great about the table tennis was the physics, so flight and speed of the ball, the bounce, spin etc was so accurate that when I got on to a table after an hour or so just adjusting slightly to real world conditions, I was playing the shots just as I was in table tennis VR and I've never played real table tennis before. I also had Wii and concept may seem similar but isn't the same since you are still looking at a screen and the motion controls aren't that accurate so things like how you position yourself or actually handle the controller in game isn't 1:1 with real life. So I found VR table tennis to be seriously close to the real thing in the end.
      Would like to check out a flight sim. May give that a go soon.

      That's the point. VR is optically almost like reality, but it is much more important for Studentpilots to get to know the Plane movements and G-forces while flying. For many people these forces cause confusion and panic. Even a Level D motion simulator cannot simulate this. Conclusion: as soon as turbulences, shear winds, steep roll- / pitch angles or stalls appear, VR does nothing. I think it's even dangerous, because many people train extreme flight maneuvers in VR - and then are completely surprised and scared while experience this in reality!

      RocKiteman _ 2001 Well if you’ve already got the computer hardware and just need the yoke, pedals, and VR headset, definitely. If not, and you’ve already had enough training to solo, you’d have to decide if the setup (~$1800 now) is worth the same as 9hr of refresher training (~$200/hr). That’s a tough call. The upside is, if you have the space to leave it set up, you can practice as much as you want. I like that I can practice my weak areas as long as I want without stressing about the expense.

    • @FlightHours
      @FlightHours  4 роки тому

      VR graphics will always be far below what we’re used to for non-VR. After all, VR requires everything to be rendered twice, once for each eye. When FS2020 comes out, if they actually add VR support (so far they haven’t), the graphics quality will be far below what we’re seeing in the previews. It’s just a limitation of the technology. I wouldn’t make any conclusions based solely on screen recordings like this... adding the VR experience is absolutely wild, once you try it, you’ll be willing to sacrifice graphics quality for the immersive experience! A screen recording just doesn’t do it justice. In reality, the Oculus’ screen resolution is the bottleneck on quality, not the sim or the computer hardware. I’m more looking forward to better VR headsets than I am to more powerful graphics cards or sims.

    Great video. I think you might get more traffic to this video since I posted it in FB private pilot ground school study group. I am doing Sporty's online ground school right now. After watching your video, I immediately decided to get myself X-Plane 11 and ordered a honeycomb alpha yoke. I plan to use my ch pedals & x52 throttle with the sim to get the basics with information from the ground school. I understand that flight training IRL has no substitute. Based on your experience, what extra did you learn in IRL that you could have learned in VR?

    • @FlightHours
      @FlightHours  4 роки тому +1

      Man, I am thrilled to hear that my amateur video helped inform your flight training decisions. That was my mission from the outset of this channel, thanks so much for letting me know. I'm working through your paramotor vids and I'm a subscriber! Great stuff, keep at it. (I'm a big Tucker Gott fan and I hope to attend Aviator Paramotor someday! Tucker flies in my area - kinda suspect I've seen his crew flying at a local airport but unconfirmed. Where do you fly?)
      Much thanks for linking the vid! I didn't do the Sporty's ground school course, but I did use their test prep app to study, and it's fantastic. I did the entire 993 question base 1 1/2 times through, then just hammered out one practice test every day for about a month. I scored 97 on the written exam and I owe some of that success to the Sporty's test prep app.
      One element of the sim I really overlooked is the Garmin GPS. There aren't too many models, and they mostly work the same, so I should've spent more time learning how to operate the GPS in the sim where the training time is free. You can turn the GPS on in a real plane while on the ground, but you're running down the battery and the flight school doesn't charge for that time, so you don't really get that opportunity often.
      As for the strengths of the sim... If you get rudder pedals (you should), the sim will do an excellent job of teaching you to steer with your feet on the ground, which is very unnatural at first. Driving around the airport for the first time in real life was very easy for me, because I was already used to it. You'll learn that on takeoff, as you push the throttle up to max power, you need to smoothly apply more and more right rudder (right foot) and hold it there as you roll down the runway. This is an area where you'll get the, "Are you sure this is your first flight?" from your instructor. If you read a manual on the proper speeds and flap settings for approach to landing, you can rehearse those speeds and practice dividing your attention between the important instruments and looking out the side window to judge your relationship to the runway (this is where VR really shines, since you can't easily turn your head in a regular sim).

      Heyyy congratulations bro! Did you grease those landings? Where are you flying? I just ordered a Honeycomb yoke yesterday from Sporty's, hope to have it before Christmas... they're very well-reviewed and in high demand. (All the flight sim equipment is in short supply - I may actually be able to sell my Logitech yoke, used, after 2 1/2 years, for a profit.) So, yeah, absolutely you can calibrate the VR headsets while using a yoke & throttle, they don't get in the way at all. One isn't aware of the other. You'll have no problem groping around to feel where your controls are with the headset on either, and it's really immersive. I set up a folding chair on my right side, where the passenger seat is in VR, and keep my Oculus controller & iPad there when I'm not using them - they're easy to reach out and grab.

    Can a vr headset be connected to a laptop gamer?

    • @FlightHours
      @FlightHours  5 років тому +2

      Maybe. I wouldn’t recommend it for flight sims. VR has some major hardware requirements for smooth performance - especially for flight sim. You’ll want a GTX 1060 equivalent or greater, and even then, my GTX 1060 couldn’t handle loading the airliners - it would slow below 20fps and just crash after loading the MD82 or the 737, before takeoff. Even my 1080ti slows & crashes around New York City on medium-high settings. If you fly only the C172 or SF50, and turn # of world objects to minimums, and lower settings, it might run.
      Unfortunately you‘ll probably still come up short on plugs. You need 3 USB 3.0 ports (1 for each sensor & 1 for the headset) plus a full-size HDMI port for the headset. Don’t forget the other 2 USB 2.0 ports required for the yoke and pedals (1 each). You may be able to split the 2.0 ports but you can’t split the 3.0’s.
      I wish I had better news - the tech is just too new. You’re loading two versions of every environment simultaneously (one for each eye).
      That being said, I don’t know much about modern day gaming laptops. Haven’t shopped for one in a decade. Hope this helps!

      @FlightHours  5 років тому

      The GhastlyGamer Wow, where are you? Sounds like a deal! I’m told by a buddy that prices correlate w/ rent - the higher the rent in an area, the higher the cost of flying. At this airport (Manteo, NC) it was $200/hr w/ instructor for a C172. Up in NJ I’m traveling an hour west from the coast to find that, and even there, aircraft availability sometimes puts it to $240/hr for a Piper Turbo Arrow III. When you ad in tax and the cost of commuting to the airport, it's over $200/hr and can get close to 300.

    • @FlightHours
      @FlightHours  5 років тому

      The Cessna 150 at this airport was $170 + tax so @theghastlygamer has a point - but it seems that's the lower end, and definitely not what a prospective student should budget for. Not all flight schools have a 150, and it won't always be available... $200-300/hr is a safer estimate for anyone budgeting for flight school. Students should know the lesson can't always end at 1.0 hours either - if it gets busy you can burn an extra 0.1 to 0.2 hours taxiing and that's another $20-40 right there.

      I'm more interested in the real-world landmarks than object diversity... It does render obstacles on VFR charts (powerlines, towers) but what I'd really like to see are more accurate airport landmarks (hangar locations, accurate taxiways). I fly out of a small rural airport IRL and the taxiways, terrain, and runway slope are all wrong. So I do agree the autogen could use some work. I think there are a lot of user-submitted terrain packs - that's on my list of things to explore.

      Tower plus yoke, pedals, and VR headset totaled $1,680 - see description for cost breakdown. You can spend $2,500 on the tower if you prefer but I built this rig for $1,000 (thanks Microcenter!).

      It’s a cool and historic airport, hoping to return there this summer. Thanks for watching!
