I use X-Plane 11 for IFR practice - that is all. It took me a bit of time and effort to get a plane set up with a Garmin GTN650 and 2 G5s to simulate my real world cockpit. As cool as MSFS looks, I'm sticking with my current setup, and that serves my purpose well.
@@israelfreitas2000 i was trying to switch to a better sim from fsx and flightgear. i tested fs2020 with the 1 dollar game pass and the game wouldn't even download. i got x plane and have enjoyed it since. at least i only paid one dollar to try it out.
You are right. Since i bought FS2020 i never touched Xp11 again. It just takes so long to get started and the game is so bad optimised in OpenGL (Vulcan doesnt work)
01:52 - You know the scenery is darned realistic when you instantly recognize the site (Neuschwanstein castle) you've visited only once, over a quarter of a century ago.
I absolutely disagree with your final statement that the msfs is and should be a game.I think in next two years it will be the best flight sim on the market.
And the reason your statement is 100% correct is the amount of potential there is in this new platform. Its a completely re-written piece of modern software, with modern architecture, that has been future proofed for many years to come. DX12 hasn't even been implemented yet, so we have that to look forward too as well. The future is very bright.
Information is awesome to see, I disagree with the final statement though that MSFS should go down a good flying game route, I think the scenery generation for VFR, the weather engine and expansion to the add-on flight models for MSFS will expand the realism to never before seen levels of realism and I think that the space needs the competition between the sims that it lost for a good solid 10 years. It'll benefit enthusiast who will probably stick around longer anyways, and Xplane and other sims will only benefit from further competition in development of technologies.
I think Stef’s got a good point. I get requests from friends who started to fly in MSFS2020 (gamers mostly) that want to try it in real life now. I agree that MSFS2020 might get new blood into aviation, so yeah, keep the threshold low...
@@KPTKleist I think you have a point but I believe that MSFS doesn't have to play too hard that it actively curtails less to enthusiasts. I believe the microsoft flight sims in general always had a means to control realism and especially with this one there are sliders to dial things back, if they are able to improve the realistic ends I believe they'll be able to fine tune realism to entry level players. I believe that in general add-on development tends to curtail to the enthusiast base anyways too, so they should focus on bringing that realism in general stuff and fine tuning how they can reduce that realism through the methods that they already have so they can introduce new players and actively keep them in the ecosystem and give them a means to develop and raise those realism sliders and I believe by doing that they curtail to the hardcore and casual players actively bring in more hardcore players and the add-on market gains as well.
I don't think it has to be one or the other, they have pioneered this technology and it's better for everyone if they continue to push realism while having the things that are already present to help new comers cause if they stick to it they'll continue to stick to it and learn and seek more, and that will give studios like Laminar the market to potential get these bigger teams to implement the things MSFS has and we as consumers gain.
Another point. I fly from a field in England real life. The field is perfectly detailed on MFS20. It could be a great way of teaching students circuits, especially with non radio aircrafts.
I own X-Plane, FS2020, and have used P3D extensively but don't currently own it. When I teach pattern work to students, I use a multi monitor 3 wide 1 touchscreen below (Air Manager). When the student is abeam the numbers he/she/it/whatever can look directly down the wing on left or right monitor. Multi monitor is essential for VFR training. FS2020 does not do multi monitor, might take awhile or maybe FS2020 just won't go there due to performance issues and X-Box being single monitor system. I am psychic, so before you say it, VR does not work well for instructor/student training, which also require IOS instructor operating station. An IOS is not implemented in FS2020. Yes, single monitor VFR with several views saved is ...OK just not ideal for training. A multi monitor system is essential for RWS and RW pilots enhancing skills/procedures, staying current, or adding ratings. If you look closely at stock airports (as a RW pilot) you will notice that FS2020 STOCK airports are not built out. They have poor signage, bad taxiways, bad lighting. Yes, this will improve. There are numerous other reasons that I do not recommend FS2020 (YET) for RWS. Perhaps in a year or two.
5:00 Don't forget that XP11 doesn't have a default SR22 so the SR22 you're using in XP11 had everything working and is to a better quality than MSFS2020 default SR22 so the quality will improve when Carenado or whoever bring their addons to MSFS
Yeah, but you need to take a loan out to get the "default" SR22 in MSFS as it's only included in the "premium" edition. I opted for the deluxe and still they want me to pay another 85 bucks to upgrade from deluxe to premium. I'll wait until a 3rd party SR22 comes out.
the modding community will 100% figure out how to make MSFS as realistic as possible. The devs only need a few smaller changes to allow for that, so i think it's okay for them to go the flying game route and focus on missions and things like that. They definitely did their job by creating a platform, but as with every sim it's the community content that really brings it to life
I've got to say with owning P3D, XPlane and now MSFS. I am really enjoying MSFS a lot more. I think because it has gotten me to think about flight sim a little different. I was a little shocked however when I attempted some VOR navigation that it wasn't really put in correctly yet (this might be a lack of knowledge however, not a real-world pilot). From what I have heard from many other real-world pilots is that MSFS is spot on with flight dynamics. I was honestly somewhat disappointed with the SR22 however. But other aircraft it feels very well done. I love how clear and technologically advance MSFS is, and this has made it so much easier to do flights, especially group flights being able to follow a road on maps and it is in the simulator as well. At the moment the sim is more VFR GA, especially bush flying, and honestly, I am not complaining. But I am positive they will fix these issues, and 3rd party developers will start creating study level airliners and other GA planes again and this will become the sim of choice for most people.
I don't know what this guy is thinking a simulator that I was waiting for ten years now has finally come and he is talking about Xplane is more he needs to put it in a sack
For now... Yes i agree with your opinion.. But even so, as soon as those study level aircraft creeps to MSFS... The wind might change by a lot MSFS as of now still lacks study level aircraft (that i personally want to fly)... As soon as it starts rolling in.. ill give it beating to know how it performs
@@OnTheRailwayOfficial he was implying it as thats how the argument goes these days numbnuts. Xplane dweebs be making fake reddit accounts just to defend it when you can only fly a fucking handful of airports. Flight sim has them all.
I don’t know man. I hope MSFS2020 takes the more realistic path than arcade/games. It sure has a lot of potential without being potentially ruined by those not treating it as a sim.
Don't fooled by this youtubers attempt to convince you MFS won't become a serious sim platform. Have a look at this video for starters. ua-cam.com/video/8dTTK_zf7uA/v-deo.html
Please do not be misinformed. There are those who just can't switch since they've put hundreds into X-Plane 11 or others. But I don't blame them I would defend a simulator I have been using for a while and have invested in. I personally use MSFS2020 now for my VFR practice and IFR training when I can't fly IRL...
After taking forever to make up my mind, I eventually bought XPlane 11 last week. MSFS looks a lot better...but when you get down to it, XPlane is just, well, the better simulator.
I totally agree. X-plane was always about flight model and physics geekery. MS2020 is stunning eye-candy and definitely fun. I'm sticking with Xplane mainly due to physical simulator panel I've built and rewiring everything for different type of interface would set me back a couple of days of troubleshooting.
Stefan, as an avid Aviator, A&P, and Flight Sim Enthusiast, I really appreciate this video. I have flown mostly the Skyhawk but also the Archer II aircraft. I was confused because MSFS has been old reliable for me, as The first version I used was MSFS 5.0 where Meigs Field was the primary airport, however I also used XPLANE ever since the first version came out and I was confused on what to upgrade to next. Thank you so much for the useful tips and info buddy, and remember tailwinds to the sky.
I can’t wait to see EchoYankeeZulu back on the tarmac, and Milkshake being your copilot on long flights! Despite now playing MSFS 2020, have you opted to retain your loyalty to the X-PLANE gang or have you decided to move on? It is great to see that private pilots like yourself and many others are keeping well despite having to leave your beloved aircraft in the dust of the hanger. I quite enjoy your comedic approach to everything, turning the most serious of things into comedy gigs with Milkshake (she is very adorable)!
As someone who has flown X-plane since 1995, you cannot compare default aircraft in Microsoft Flight Simulator to payware aircraft in X-plane, it is just not fair. The Carenado SR22 is half the price of standard version of Mircosoft Flight Simulator and some premium add-on aircraft are as much as the Premium Deluxe version of Flight Simulator. ($110+). X-Plane has has numerous updates in X-plane 11, so give Flight Simulator 6-12 month and then compare.
I haven't owned X-Plane to compare but I would really like to try, as the biggest thing that's bugging me about MSFS is the aircraft handling at the extremes of the flight envelope. Most of them (except so far the Extra, which may have had "extra" time spent on it due to its purpose as a stunter) are impossible to provoke into a stall and even less a spin, most just glide nose-up well below their stall speed with the stick hard back. So, for practising necessary flight skills at the moment it's a non-starter.
Hy Stefan (X-Plane 11 with / without Addons?) Great Video, i really apreciate your detailed informations. Especially because i never flown in any X Plane or MS FS 2020. But did you compare Xplane 11 without any Addons in this Video? If no, which Addons did you use and whats the cost of those?
Hey, sorry I’m not Stef but I think I can help out a bit. In the video he is using the SR22 aircraft. In FS 2020 the SR22 comes with the premium deluxe version of the sim, the cost depends on where you live. In X-Plane 11 the SR22 is not included in the default simulator and has to be purchased with money. I don’t know how much it costs but I would imagine it’s around $20-$30. Because the SR22 in FS2020 is default the devs didn’t have a lot of time to work on it, so the SR22 in X-Plane is better but is made by deferent devs so it had more work done on it. I don’t know if he is using any other addons but I hope this helped!
There is an excellent freeware sr22 for x plane, however it does take a big hit on frames. Aside from the aircraft he used vanilla versions for both sims. And I can agree with his assessment. The flight model in msfs is good, but the planes feel more realistic in X-Plane. Microsoft has better scenery and weather. They both have their strengths and weaknesses and it’s a matter of what you’d prefer. Personally for me the aircraft are the star of a sim so I prefer X-Plane still but I’ve also really been enjoying msfs!
@@kalynstalinski8375 He did not use default vanilla! That is not true! He is comparing a single addon plane that costs you 55 usd and has obviously much more refined controls and handling to the default new sim version! That is not a fair comparison!
zombi111980 I did mention that the aircraft is an add on, however the scenery he used is vanilla x plane. And the default aircraft in X-Plane still handle more realistic than in msfs imho. Even with payware add ons, the core flight model of the sim is what makes the biggest difference. Also the fact that even in X-Plane’s default aircraft, the avionics actually work the way they should irl, and even the payware sr22 he’s using in this video, the g1000 is based on (and expanded upon) the X-Plane native g1000.
Brilliant video!! Personally, I think we'll see much improved functionality during the coming months/updates in FS2020. I think that, in time, with the updates (as well as the addons that are sure to come out to fix any issues that arise) we could see something really special. The graphics are amazing and VFR flying can be done practically anywhere, something that I haven't really found in any other sim (the realistic live weather in FS2020 also helps massively - I cannot stress this enough!!). I agree with you that the controls feel slightly 'bouncy', but I guess the sensitivity can be adjusted. However, for me, its not really a big issue. It kinda makes it more lively, unlike older sims where flying along can almost feel boring and feel the same all the time. There are definitely improvements to be done in FS2020, especially with the onboard systems as you say - but when that is sorted, for me, I will 100% be going with FS2020. Keep up the good work!
like I said this flight sim is new a has a lot of development coming and when the payware planes come Xplane is dead no other sim just can't touch this one
I very much disagree with your final statement please don’t speak for the whole flight simulator / aviation community I really want this sim to go down the path of being more realistic
Absolutely. I don't consider XP a game as I learn to start a plane cold, prepare the flight plan, maneuver through the airport, set controls, fly, deal with weather and land. A "game" is shooting people and playing soccer with cars. No comparison.
Absolutely, a realistic sim is much better. I love the feeling you get in msfs 2020 when you are flying along and things are smooth, but then you get close to a mountain side and the air turbulence kicks in same as going over the peaks. Icing, the fact that you really have to make calculating decisions to get out of a serious situation in a plane without de icing capabilities. That was a lot of fun.
@@4freebird69 man he is looking after his own interest... X plane . MSF2020 its hassle-free and more realistic, better design, better everything. X plane its like in beta level for a long time now so its growing but very slowly..
@@ze2004 Xplane to fly, MSFS to watch. The grapics are great but thats all MSFS has got. We all got preferences though so Im not gonna judge you for liking MSFS.
Sometimes I wonder if Stefan Drury is more British or Austrailian. He seems to feature relatively more UK locations more in his videos. For example, he featured London and Biggin Hill airport (3:54). However after all, Austrailia has strong historical links with Austrailia
Would have to agree with your conclusion Stef as things stand currently. But still really impressed with what MSFS has achieved and excited about the potential for those of us looking for realistic flight modelling and study level avionics. Hoping that once the SDK is finalised and third party developers like A2A, PMDG (maybe even Torquesim) get their hands on it, we might be spoilt for choice.
Thank you for this! I was introduced to aviation when my opa took me up in his Cessna 172g for my 5th birthday. I got fs95 in 8th grade, after opa and I crashed n3536l at 3w2 in ohio😜, and fs98 my sophomore year in high school. I loved both. But life progressed and shortly after my son died, I discovered x-plane mobile, and while the scenery was lacking, it was the flight model and systems depth, even in default planes, that really got me hooked, then I got a pc and the desktop version of X-Plane 11, and last year started my ppl training, before car trouble took a hit from my real world flying budget. Since then I’ve been getting the most out of X-Plane, and now msfs, and as brilliant as it is, for me the planes are the star of a flight simulator and that’s what keeps me coming back to X-Plane! I see the real world benefits of having both, and for me, rekindling my love of aviation and flying helped pull me out of a very dark depression as been the best therapy ever, thanks for your insight, and as always, keep the blue side up!
My last flight simming days were in 2011 with FSX, and I highly recommend incorporating Air Hauler. I became absolutely addicted to flying and cash grabbing the best paying jobs while sight seeing where ever you want to base your HQ. After 6 months of crazy flying I then had a middle ear infection which resulted in an operation which left me with vertigo. I couldn't work with a computer for months without wanting to throw up from Vertigo, caused when I scroll screens . . .lol, So flight simming got canned after work and my Air Hauler company went bankrupt !! Once I got over the vertigo I was planning to came back to the hobby with a bigger and better machine and flight sim harware, but life and health got in the way. So here I am 9 years later thinking I'll avenge my flying passion with X-plane this time around. P3d was maybe my other choice, but I think X-plane will win out as I want to fly 727's with Air Hauler once the company progresses !!
@@Bakus74 what are you on about. I have both and yes the graphics are much better on mfs but from a flying aspect (the reason why we buy these games) is far superior on Xplane. Mfs is more of a kids game to me.
Exactly, completely pointless video. Why don’t they just wait a couple years then compare??but ohhh nooo we just have to compare years and years of work on a flight sim with addons to completely fresh out the box vanilla sim.
Tom Chavez Ik and he even said we don’t need fs2020 to be a flight sim and he thinks that it should just be a game instead. He even said there’s already good flight sims out there like x plane 11 or p3d. Those flight sims are complete Garbo compared to fs2020, I’m not even being bias either fs2020 is miles ahead of x plane. And I think it’s about time that we move from a shitty looking flight sim and actually move to a sim with up to par graphics and technoligy with this new era of gaming.
Some people just have superiority complexes. They have mastered this 'true to life' x plane and they don't like it when the hordes are coming along treating the genre like a piece of fun and worse still thinking they can also fly a plane.
First of all...Nice Video :) . I fly X.plane 11 in VR every evening because of the realism ( Planes,Avionics ect. ) , with ORBX o Ortho scenery. MSFS is new and a lot of it doesn't work properly yet, but it's nice to look at and fun. But for me as a SIM pilot, X-plane is still number one. X-Plane in VR runs so smoothly at the highest settings , thanks Vulkan engine. just have to wait and see what the future will bring in SIM Flying.
I have been looking at getting back into flight sym for a while and was over excited about MSFS 2020 but could not decide if I should leave it for a year for the bugs to be ironed out. Watching your video has helped me decide.
I've been using X-Plane since 2013 and now I've started training IRL to be a pilot. I prefer MSFS2020 even though the systems aren't very accurate yet but I think we'll see a shift as third party developers come onboard.
@@sandro4362 I know you mean well but when you make these claims you should have some evidence to back it up. No simulator is the same as real world flying especially flight dynamics and as far as I'm aware nobody has crashed from doing everything else correctly but crashing cause thier real plane dynamics didn't match a simulator they were using.
I prefer xplane 11 because i like to fly commercial aircraft with the reasism of doing a cold startup, and programming the flight plan into the pc which i found difficult to understand in microsoft flight sim.
It’s a simple fact that everything in aviation is going to cost you. Having said that, the cost of owning both X-Plane and MS Flight Sim, isn’t that expensive in relative terms. (Compare that to hiring an SR-20 for an hour in the ‘real’ world). I don’t think it’s unreasonable for a pilot to have both and use whatever tool fits the mission objective at the time. But I also agree that MSFS is a great introduction to anyone with an interest in flying to build on their passion and progress from the virtual to real world aviation. And I think it’s a great tool for VFR flying, even if some of the rendered buildings are a bit odd!
Can’t really compare the cost of playing a game to flying in real life. It’s not the same experience. “Ok family instead of going to Disneyland, gather around the computer and I’ll fly us there on that!”
But which is better from standard so the minimum that x-plane comes with and the standard package in msfs2020? He is using a payware aircraft so its expected to be exact and real.
The prenium edition of msf 2020 costs more than xplane abd the torque sim sr22 as there's a freeware hold my beer s22 which has great physics and modeled systems too
I've been an fsx/p3d guy for years, since fs95. I'd spent a fortune making fsx as realistic as possible so when I bought xplane 11 because of the pretty lights it still didn't visually beat my p3d at the time so I shelved it. Having played fs2020 since release I've found the flight model a bit arcade overall so I thought I'd dust off xplane and see if I was missing out. An overloaded cesena 172 on xplane 11 will not fly whereas an overloaded 172 on fs2020 will handle nearly the same as if it was empty. The looks go to fs2020 hands down, but the feeling that can't be described or quantified in a video are a win for xplane all day long.
very fair comparison for the current state of both sims. As with all previous sims, they mature and get better over time. I have no doubt MSFS will improve over the next year and start to catch up to some of that realism side of things that xplane current wins on, and most likley overtake it. WIth regards to game vs sim, i think what asobo were aiming for was a good mix of both, having the realism for the die hard simmers and rl pilots wanting some practice. being able to set the difficulty of systems and effects allows it to accomplish both very well. Once more study level aircraft are released for MSFS, i think some of the things you would use xplane for now will be doable in MSFS. Hope you are well Stef, only a few weeks of lockdown to go mate! i cant wait to get outside too lol
I think I need both! I am planning on restart lessons in 2021 (because you know , 2020) of a 20 year hiatus. I got MSF 2020 as a training tool (and for fun) to help me relearn some of the basics.
Wait what? You are really comparing payware aircraft in xplane to default in MFS20? Are you serious? Look at the default planes in p3d and xplane and then come back! I cant believe this!
I have both Microsoft FS2020 and X-Plane 11 on my PC and find FS2020 does not always start all my Saitek Multi, Radio, Switch Panels and my single Multi instrument that I choose to use as an Altimeter plus my Yoke, Throttles and Rudder Pedals even after installing the New Logitech Microsoft Simulator Drivers Pack that I recommend you get, if you have any Saitek Gear, once installed it takes care of all Saitek equipment you might have. However after all that MSFS2020 does not always fire up correctly, it is full of silly little bugs to numerous to mention them all, but one annoying bug is the elevator not working in the outside view, but works from the inside view. If MSFS2020 does not start up fully working, then it don't get a second chance, I close it down and make the same planned flight in X-Plane 11 with all the highly detailed Orbx Scenery and airports it all run perfect every time, highly recommended and it don't require anywhere near the minimum requirement of 2GB RAM and 8 GB of HDD you need to run MSFS2020 .
Funny you mention that. Microsoft is working on an extensive flight model update that will be out soon. They released a video about it too some hours ago.
I totally agree with your review. I'm currently finalising my instrument training, the possibility to connect the iPad to XPlane (o connect foreflight for instance), and all the instruments functionality are miles away from MSFS. MSFS outside image are nicer, but under IFR you are not looking outside but at the instrument.
You can connect your tablets in mfs too... There are multiple already available options to do this. and some of them are free. Of course default aircraft are not as detailed as 60 usd + addon aircraft.. If you want to make a fair comparison you have to look at the default Aircraft in xplane too!
I’ve literally been using flight sim since the 80’s...yes I’m that old. When I flew for the first time, my instructor thought I was far ahead of most students at that point in training. I credit that to many years of using MSFS. It’s more than a game. It’s disappointing they didn’t add the realism of the avionics, and I saw in another video how the flight director doesn’t work properly; but I think those things are fixable. MSFS is a simulator first with some gaming elements. I would hate for them to simply call it a game and rest on their laurels. With the graphics and world rendering it has soooo much more to offer. This could really be the sim to rule them all...until until FS30 comes in the next 10 years...
@@Gamebreaker08 i ve been using FS since 2004, i m looking for a Simulator rather than a game, i will find out soon enough each one is better simulator, FS2020 or xplane11 i will let you know :)
This video was obviously done before the Working Title versions of the Garmin G1000 and GNS 530/430 in MSFS. I would love to see this video redone today, with X-Plane 12 and MSFS 40th Anniversary.
Haven't played MSFS2020. XP11 definitely does "feel" realistic comparing to flying real planes, granted it is a more mature product. I'd imagine MSFS2020 will get updated and refined with updates.
I agree. Let's first wait for some good quality study-level add-ons from PMDG, A2A, FlightSimLabs, a.o. , that use their own flight models, and fully functional cockpits, and then do this comparison again. MSFS is still in its infancy. The default planes are rough examples, graphics-wise of what is possible, but are not representative of what the sim is capable of. Asobo did not make very detailed flight models or in-depth simulation of systems, but they did focus on the important part and that is making a very good base/platform, on which third-party devs can make very detailed, specific content, be it a planes (e.g. PMDG), avionics (e.g. RealityXP), scenery (e.g. ORBX)
We'll just have to wait and see - I haven't played FS2020 yet so I cannot really compare XP11 vs FS2020. Can't wait to get it up and running on my system.
I WOULD always go FS2020 , as it is going to be supported to the highest level , and as time progress in a short time at that it will improve its models so quickly, either by community or by addons
I think the best might be MS doing the game part and third party developer focus on the simmer part as they can concentrate on study level aircraft for RL pilot practicing VFR,IFR. As a student pilot fly VFR the most, I am using FS2020 as a preflight tool to get familiar with flight plan
I definitely thought I was buying a sim, and I got more of a game, I hope in the future there will be more functionality with the IFR and GPS systems. Its just the graphics look so good!
Msfs 2020 at its current that is a full on sim. Just because some system are not fully implemented doesnt mean it is "only" a game. Even payware planes on X-Plane 11 offen have some missing buttons. The msfs X-Cub for example is basically fully functional apart from the G1000 not handling changes in the ifr flight plan well and stars and appraches activating when you just load them. Both things need to be fixed and are annoying, but not real dealbreakes, since in most cases you simply fly your planned route and just have to load stars and approaches a bit later then normally. According to Microsoft the G1000 issues are worked at right now so should soon be fixed. On the other hand I had trouble finding a small grass strip on the C152 yesterday because I was flying into the direction of the sun, which never made much of an impact on X-Plane for me. And on the X-Cub the fuel gauges in the rear are fully functional which is really nice. The default airplanes on Msfs blow anything any other sim has out of the water by far.
The system is in depth already which I can call it a sim. Not talking about airliners, but ga. Game would not implement a live weather, satellite imagery, real airport data, vector data etc. If this is your first sim then you can say that. If you owned fsx, p3d and xplane by default then you will appreciate msfs even more
FS2020 is a beautiful real world example of our world in the air. When you actually fly X-Plane, the difference is loads more realistic for some, and maybe not all. The flight model realism in X-Plane is what hooked me when I was flying FS2004 then FSX.
An excellent summary Stefan. For me, I use the sim as I was unable to complete my PPL training and missed that buzz. I will be running both as I simply adore the visuals. The flight dynamics have improved to a point where they are close to X-plane, enough to increase my heart rate on finals. Something which FSX could never do. I find the refinement of X-plane however will make Laminar's software my preferred choice, for the time being at least.
I've flown an aircraft (well two) in real life. One thing I really liked about XPlane was you could put in your design and see how it would fly. I had several designs I came up with myself. I also had some, like the Voyager, that I put in from design specs I found in an encyclopedia. My worst ever crash was on Mars. I went over 1.5KM just rolling across the landscape before my aircraft came to a halt. After I came to a halt, I set up another flight to see if
Personally I think, give it 3 more years for Microsoft to release some updates to fix issues. And third party developers to get involved and bring their products to the sim. I think then we might be looking at a possible overtake with XPlane. But at the moment, its more of a "Hey, look what we can do sim" rather than a study level sim. I've owned a flight simulator since 2004 with that being FS2004, then FSX and finally P3D which I still use as my main sim so I know how far flight sims have come, especially in the Microsoft world. And I have played on friends XPlanes to know the differences. I think we all should be thankful that our small community is getting the attention its been losing over the years and start looking forward to amazing things to come.
no, give it one year and Xplane is dead this flight sim has everything coming to it it also has a lot of development o the way so Xplane needs to build a new Xplane 12 or 13 to get ahead of die
@@holdensv2000 If I would be the manager of X-Plane I would switch my company goals and produce nice add-ons for the MSFS. A big market and lots to do :D
COMPLETELY disagree that mfs should be a flight game. Remember that x plane 11 was WAY worse when it just released. It took 5/6 years of updates and a crap ton off addons to make it as good as it is today. I think it's ignorant to say that mfs should be a game due to its current state. Imagine if they updated the flight physics to be accurate to real life. And when we have study level third party planes. COMBINED with the amazing weather engine and the graphics. How could you say no to that?
@@sandro4362 yes a bunch of nerds who are passionate about aviation. Asobo may have more funds, but that doesn't mean they're more knowledgeable about aviation. Some ppl on their team had to get their ppl to understand it more. So it actually makes more sense that x plane has better flying physics.
Only in XPlane for the first flight I had a WoW effect for feeling the aircraft. I try Microsoft... but will begin trying my DIY Motion Platform with VR in X Plane. Will see wether MSFS2020 will reach to X Plane. Grafics are great in MSFS, but I want flight feelings. If XPlane would look like MSFS and feel like XPlane. This would be it!
no way. MFS is it is made to catch casual players flying over their house, then leaving the game after 6 months. XPLANE is for those who study and are passionate about aviation. Just tried it, and after 2 years: 1) is full of bugs 2) The flight model is fake, facilitated ,is cheating
You show an aeroplane crashing into a building than bouncing off, and gives it a sarcastic thumbs up? Your difficulty setting are not as high as they should be for a real world pilot.
Person1: Microsoft flight simulator is better Person2: X-Plane 11 is better Me chilling on Roblox Pilot Training Flight Simulator: ‘HaHa F4-PhantomE go zoom’
I’m just starting flight lessons, no aviation background, which is better for someone just starting to get the “feel” of basics: takeoff, turning, navigating? My 172 lessons plane is equipped with a Garmin 1000, and multi axis flight auto pilot. Thanks. Mike
I agree with your assessment 100% xplane might not be as glamours as FS2020 but if you want a better flight learning experience xplane hands down is the way to go.
Hey there Stef, just finished watching your series on your outback trip. I had been tempted to get my pilot’s license the past couple of weeks, and after that I 100% want to pursue it. It would also be amazing to own a plane someday, travelling through the American southwest
Honestly I have known about Xplane but I was never too interested to try a flight sim until MSFS2020 came out. Really, I think a lot of people feel similar, and we can see from the previous shortages of various flight sim gear that a lot of people got into it. I do hope MS improves the instruments and flight systems and the whole realism aspect, because, while I do like "fun" flying, I also like the challenge/complexity of aviation and would love to perhaps one day get a PPL, therefore, the more accurate/realistic MSFS is the more I can learn about flying, or at least it feels like that. Heck, if one day I do not pass the medical for flying I would have to resort to simming only haha
Exactly my thoughts, I love XP11 so much. Being a pilot myself, XP11 is the most realistic by far in aerodynamics and procedures. I subscribed to MSFS to give it a chance as everyone was saying it was the most realistic thing ever and its really not. Yeah the graphics are stunning but the flying is horrible, it does not fly like an aircraft at all. As you said it is very bouncy and all for £60 you cannot press every button? XP is cheaper and it gives you amazing quality default aircraft with almost every button you can press. However in the long run XP is more expensive if you want to add more aircraft and scenery. But overall, XP11 is realistic and MSFS just wants to be a arcade flying game
Good point - no replay is a bit annoying especially when you're landing from the cockpit view but then want to review it externally. Also make creating UA-cam videos a lot harder!
Been on Xplane since v7 and whilst it's amazing quality and absolute plethora of addons, the light is slowly starting to die on it with 3rd party developers deciding their products are abandon ware or publicity of their change to MSFS. Xplane has always being worked on with a very small team with long goals.(full release Vulkan took 9 months and a few of the more expensive addons still aren't working. Microsoft and Asobo have created and amazing world. The bare cost you would have to put into xplane in addons after the fact to get it close to MSFS means Laminar Research need something ground breaking to round off 11.5 - 12. Microsoft runs better (once you have it working) the loading times are shorter and all round looks absolute candy-spec.
It's not dying yet at have you seen the Q400 XP coming out soon for xplane 11 it's incredible, the visual they managed to achieve are mind blowing, every system in the rl aircraft works and functions, real time circuit breakers none of that scripted crap, a custome made fms, real time fluid simulation, advanced icing simulation, alot more other things and an incredibly detailed photo real cabin. There's other devs working on fantastic aircraft I'd rather have quality over quantity, also eI think some devs just cba or put the effort or hardwork in so they went the easy route moved over to mfs only and make system light OK aircraft
MSFS is too bouncy in clouds? It's called turbulence! It does have a bit of a problem with excessive rudder control on take off, but that effect is exacerbated visually the more zoom you use. I just realised yesterday that I should always have been using max negative zoom to achieve a more realistic perspective; but using a smallish monitor it is difficult to properly see the tiny gauges etc. I reckon I would need to use a 4k or better 8 ft monitor! This effect is also apparent in small control inputs making the outside bounce around a lot So, it can be better to use elevator trim control instead of joystick inputs, although this is apparently contrary to real life best practice. Another aspect is that in the real world the human brain compensates for jerky movements, smoothing them out naturally, whereas in a Sim the images just move around erratically, like peop!e shooting a UA-cam video using a hand held camera without utilising correction software.
Some people might disagree with your final statement. However, I won't. This is why: 1) The whole MSFS franchise is based on getting new people into the "flight sim" community. Missions, challenges, and easier flight planners are a good way to satisfy newer simmers, but if you've flown with X-Plane, the newest MSFS installment feels like a major downgrade in terms of flight models and cockpit functions, for example. To put it another way around, MSFS is an entry-level simulator, more like a game. 2) Stunning graphics, realistic modeling of weather, and the ability to fly around your own house sure are nice but do they compensate for the fact that the planes overall are unrealistic? No. 3) X-Plane Pro has an FAA certificate. Its only major differences compared to the X-Plane 11 (home version) are the possible spherical or cylindrical projections of the game and the ability to drive separate GPS units. 4) Yes, if you fly with a simulator, that literally has an adjustable difficulty level, it's more like a game than an actual simulator.
It isn't a question worth posing as to whether it will be or should be a game or sim. It is barely a month old and based on the development plan and the speed at which mods are being developed who can say much of consequence about the future. X Planes most recent release is 4 years old. Let's see where the game and community take MSFS in 4 years. One thing is certain, if the player base is as big as it is likely to be in numbers then those writing the DLC will have far more incentive to produce for it. Microsoft have boldly included it in game pass and that basically rewards development studios based on the amount of time a user plays their game as a percentage each month so that the most popular games development studios get the most financial reward, driving quality up. I am pretty sure MSFS is going to therefore drive a lot of money back towards Asobo studios.
Great video! However I would like to disagree on several points. First of all you can't compare a default aircraft in MSFS to a payware add-on in X-plane. The default planes are not accurate, yes, but neither are they in X-plane. And then you cannot say MSFS is or should be a game, the techology behind it is far better than any other flight sim and we should just wait for third parties to produce quality aircrafts and sceneries. MSFS is truly the future of flight simulation.
Haofan SONG you can turn on FSX physics in FS2020, and see for yourself how different the flight model now is. Every sim has a different feel, that is the nature of the beast, and MSFS is the newer sim, unlike the mature X-Plane 11 (which was rough upon release). But the main point, MSFS is a vast improvement over FSX and you can test that yourself within the sim itself.
The difference between the realism of the default aircraft in X-Plane vs MSFS 2020 is huge. The default MSFS aircraft have a completely unrealistic rate of roll, heck the DA40NG in MSFS is listed and modeled as a 125 Ktas aircraft, in reality it's a 155 Ktas aircraft. The MSFS default aircraft have speeds and climb rates that differ greatly from those listed in the respective aircraft POH's. Not all of XPlane's default aircraft are completely accurate but many are very close, particularly the Cessna 172, the default training aircraft. They are all have far more accurate flight models than MSFS. That said I'd expect the MSFS aircraft models to improve over time. Some of their issues have to do with the general modeling of aerodynamics in the sim, which will eventually be fixed. So I don't think this situation will last forever, but right now MSFS is halfway between arcade type flying game and an actual simulator.
One thing I wasn’t happy about is that they said that the recommended specs were like an RX570 and people with 2080TIs are struggling. I have a GTX1660S and am pretty concerned about performance
NorCal Aviation - I’ve heard several people say things like this. Did Microsoft change the system requirements at some point? Because a couple months ago it was saying minimum is GTX 770, recommended is GTX 970, and optimal is RTX 2080. I have an RTX 2080 Super and it runs fine. People must be expecting at least 60fps at all times, but in flight simulation 30fps has always been acceptable.
Why not both Sims? If you already have the equipment, PC, and time to practice why not have both. I'm enjoying the MS flight sim for its graphics atm. But I know I'll go back to X-plane when I want to use more of the instruments and practice more procedural stuff.
I think there is absolutely a place for both - I enjoy playing in MSFS but using XPlane to actually test real world scenarios more closely. But this video was aimed at those who are unsure which of the two to get, or whether to move from XPlane to MSFS, a lot of people have been asking me that question this week.
I feel like the flightmodel in MSFS is actually more realistic, but most of our current joysticks and pedals just aren't up to the task. I mean, flying slowly, everything feels just as I know it from a Cup or 152. But the faster you go, the more the flight model feels like it fals short, when in reality the only thing falling short is our control setup. The faster you fly, the firmer your controls gets. Your movements get progressively smaller until, at a certain point, your not really moving anything anymore. You are more or less only applying pressure on the controls. You don't get this feeling with simple joysticks and rudders on PC. Infact, I don't even know if there is an option for that.
I was involved in a design competition once. Now, I was up against people who do aircraft design for a living, and I have no experience in that regard. Still, I had a lot of fun with it, and very much enjoyed learning from people who do that for a living. If you ever get that chance, I recommend it. Flying the different designs was so much fun, I can't even describe how fun it was. Others who flew my design said I did a good job. Mind you, I did not even place. Still, I had the only tandem wing in the competition. Yes it was unstable, but you could take off and fly it. One of the other guys told me he could never get his tandem wing off the ground. So, yeah, I guess? That being said, I would not trade that experience for anything. For all of those in the New Zealand 3 airport challenge, just know, I loved it.
Just wait for the incredible flyjsim Q400XP for xplane 11, other devs working on system indepth aircraft, yeah we may not have as many dedicated ultra realism forced devs but I prefer quality over quantity the attention detail is mind blowing, everything is simulatated, custom made and coded UN1 S fms, real time fluid / hydraulic simulation, real time circuit break simulton non of that not bad scripted stuff, other things, incredible visuals and an amazing cabin, I saw the pics and it blew my mind, also don't forget true life physics as close to the real aircraft as possible, including performance numbers, pressurisation, depressurision
Thanks Stefan. This is very helpful information, especially that you categorized the needs and flying experience of pilots who may use these two products. I’m just now looking into possibly using XPlane to help with instrument work.
said Bill Gates: "Why are you talking to me about it??" Bill Gates hasn't been involved in Microsoft operations for years. Aside from this, I think the comparison is fair but it is still very early days for MSFS2020. There are a lot of model and performance patches announced and in the pipeline so we will see FS2020 start to creep up to X-Plane's standard over the next year. Having said that, where MSFS has always shined is in the third-party aircraft which DO fly by the numbers and DO have full functionality (if you look at the stronger studios). Yes, I realise this isn't out of the box but historically Microsoft has never really provided the best aircraft although they do say that they are committed to continuously upgrading some of what they have to high-accuracy quality such as the A320. Time will tell.
How about you take a look at what xplane looks like in their basic airplanes without any payware addons then comment on how far superior Xplane is? I've spent many hours in Xplane but also way to much money on it. Now I'm looking towards MSFS and as soon as I'll get some study level A320/A350 or something I wont be looking back at Xplane ever.
Excellent 👌 Spot on perspective here. Personally sticking with Xplane for the sole reason I can't risk not being able to practice like I'm going to perform. My sim time for me is a dry run for real world flying and the system and flight modeling is just not there in MSFS. That being said it's still beautiful and I so welcome the many new virtual aviators to the hobby and aviation in general. You are most welcome and hope you enjoy and appreciate flying at all levels of enjoyment and complexity.
@@Smalltownflyer Oh dear, once PMDG, Aerosoft and some others 3rd party study level devs will realease stuff for MSFS, it's going to be SOOOOOOOOOOOOO good

I do agree with most of the strengths and weakness of each sim as you listed them, as they are now; but when MSFS has been around for as long as X-Plane is now I fully expect the MSFS weaknesses will have shrunk --- that is if Mr. Gates does not take your suggestion about abandoning simulation for pure gaming.
Sure, Xplane - which is in version 11 - has some better features than the brand new MSFS 2020. (Yes, I know there were earlier Microsoft versions before this, but this MSFS 2020 is basically a new software product.) Just give it some time. Even Xplane has updated their flight model over the years. Besides, A2A GA aircraft running on P3D is better than anything XPlane could throw at you.
I enjoy both. But still disappointed in the FS2020 flight model - does not feel right. Landing a C152 with a 20 knot crosswind should need more than a hint of effort on the rudder, but it almost floats in straight. Hopefully they can fix it.
Pretty much took the words out of my mouth in this one Stef. Great review! I'm a student pilot (almost finished actually!) and I find that I'm using both and exactly for the reasons you have described. I am a bit surprised to find many people seeming to like the flight models in MS2020. I find them over exaggerated so far (tried power off and power on stalls on the 152 and it did what you would expect but in an exaggerated "bouncy" way). I will say one thing about MS2020 though, other than the amazing graphics, the turbulence modelling is brilliant. I was flying along the coastline of Mexico and was getting mechanical and convective turbulence over the land but as soon as I scooted over the water it smoothed out. I fly for real in a coastal environment and that's just how it works. I normally have turbulence turned off in XP since it's so bad. Now, having said that, and I've said this before, but XP in VR is crazy realistic in terms of making you feel you are really flying. If and when MS2020 gets there it will pretty amazing.
Recently I have been doing a lot of research into getting my private pilots license. My primary mission is because I live in SD and my family is all back in upstate NY, I'd like to go home kinda whenever I want. Secondary mission is simply if I try it and love it then the country or possibly the world opens up for me. My question is will playing these games and learning/using those systems in the game help me later when it's time to actually use them in real life? I've kinda got my eyes on those bush planes too. Simple, rugged but can still get me anywhere with a little planning. I have only flown in a big plane to visit SD one time. Never flown in a small plane so I'm totally new to everything flight related. Which game would work best for learning the flight systems, the navigation, computer stuff?
I think this tells you everything you need to know about how this guy has following the MFS platform. The conclusions on the face of it are reasonable but I think as a UA-cam influancer he is going to anoy a load of people who opted for X-Plane as it was a sim and ignored MFS because it was an arcade game, like I said in my above comment an embarrising video.
But you are not comparing apples with apples. Xplane doesn’t even have a CIrrus to compare. You are comparing a 3rd party xplane addon to standard MSFS. That’s not a fair comparison.
Bruhhhhhh! U are comparing a payware aircraft to a default aircraft 😑😑. U did not compare the sim!! Judging from your previous vids I think you do not understand what a payware aircraft is. Payware aircrafts (the plane you used in Xplane in the comparison) are generally study level aircrafts thats why ur Xplane aircraft was so accurate. Wait for a year or so when payware aircrafts would be available for MSFS2020, then go on to compare those two sims in a fair fight 🤷♂️
As a non-pilot who understands some basic terms, my summary of this would be- if the inside of the plane is more important to you, XPlane is the way to go. If outside the plane is more important to you, MFS is the way to go.
What plane did you get with the 2 G5’s?
For now...

I absolutely disagree with your final statement that the msfs is and should be a game.I think in next two years it will be the best flight sim on the market.
And the reason your statement is 100% correct is the amount of potential there is in this new platform. @planeloverpilot no.
Maybe Stef forgot the /sarc disclaimer? 🤔
They can do both dude. It is meant to be the premier sim.
Perhaps in a year or two.
the plural of aircraft is aircraft not aircrafts.

You can download XP11 for free and try it out. Check their website. Input is disabled after 15 minutes in demo mode
Hy Stefan (X-Plane 11 with / without Addons?)
Great Video, i really apreciate your detailed informations.
X plane 11 can use real weather too.

Sometimes I wonder if Stefan Drury is more British or Austrailian. He seems to feature relatively more UK locations more in his videos. For example, he featured London and Biggin Hill airport (3:54). However after all, Austrailia has strong historical links with Austrailia
Grew up in the UK, moved to Australia 20 years ago. So I'm Braustralian, or an Austrish.
I see the real world benefits of having both, and for me, rekindling my love of aviation and flying helped pull me out of a very dark depression as been the best therapy ever, thanks for your insight, and as always, keep the blue side up!
hope to hear that flight sim is helping with your life
My last flight simming days were in 2011 with FSX, and I highly recommend incorporating Air Hauler.
Thank you, thank you! You've confirmed what I suspected. I don't care about graphics as much. I'm trying to learn.

Tom Chavez Ik and he even said we don’t need fs2020 to be a flight sim and he thinks that it should just be a game instead. And I think it’s about time that we move from a shitty looking flight sim and actually move to a sim with up to par graphics and technoligy with this new era of gaming.
AveryAvery 100% agree
AveryAvery yeah I noticed a lot of the hardcore xplanes are biased as well lol i say enjoy both but between you and me MFS2020 is miles ahead
Just get DCS it’s free and the graphics are to an extent probably better than MSFS
I've been using X-Plane since 2013 and now I've started training IRL to be a pilot. I prefer MSFS2020 even though the systems aren't very accurate yet but I think we'll see a shift as third party developers come onboard.
Sandro I’d love to hear more on how the “crap dynamics “ are going to get me killed. Maybe you should write a book on it.
Xplane needs to grow and grow fast you have to advance to get ahead
True but it is best to pick one and support the devs of that one to improve on the weak points.
9:05 Excited? Oh fure sure. Would it get more people wanting to learn to fly? Absolutely.... until they see the cost of flight school :/
That's like getting off a commercial flight you just safely landed in and yelling into the cockpit "nice game guys!" YEAH NO.
very fair comparison for the current state of both sims.
Such a great video, Stefan! Thanks so much for your honest and uplifting advice. :)
I cant believe this!
was that model he was showing payware??
There is a freeware sr22 in xplane that is almost the same as that
Also you have to buy the prenium version of msf 2020 to get the meh sr22, torque sim sr22 and xplane 11 is cheaper than get the prenium edition

Name one flight simulator that is as good as MSFS with out mods?

ORBX)
Plus, the devs commented they’ll update the flight model as it goes on.
Also, the flight model while not X-Plane, is leaps and bounds better than FSX.
Finally, I search for this so long thanks
I think the best might be MS doing the game part and third party developer focus on the simmer part as they can concentrate on study level aircraft for RL pilot practicing VFR,IFR. As a student pilot fly VFR the most, I am using FS2020 as a preflight tool to get familiar with flight plan
I definitely thought I was buying a sim, and I got more of a game, I hope in the future there will be more functionality with the IFR and GPS systems. Its just the graphics look so good!
It's all default, we have complete default game
If you owned fsx, p3d and xplane by default then you will appreciate msfs even more
this sim is new and has a lot of development coming so in a year Xplane will be dead if they don't build a new Xplane 12 or 13 just to catch up
@@holdensv2000 it won't be dead for a long time, a lot of people still use fsx

I want the G-1000 map to show "Track Up," not "North Up." I haven't found a way to change that in MSFS2020. My old Garmin GPS-90 did "track Up." :-)
Exactly my thoughts, I love XP11 so much.
But overall, XP11 is realistic and MSFS just wants to be a arcade flying game
xplane realistic 😂😂😂😂
MSFS is an actual simulator.
Nice video, I like FS2020 kinda more, but it still has cons. Like no replay and not all the buttons are interactive.
Good point - no replay is a bit annoying especially when you're landing from the cockpit view but then want to review it externally. Also make creating UA-cam videos a lot harder!
Exactly my thoughts Stef, spot on!
Thanks Marcel 👍
Excellent narration and production quality.
Both make me wanna be a pilot though and both have their good quality's
Not what l heard PMDG are doing the 737 for xplane
FS has 33 spots to fix for now, after that? will be shining in every way :)
This is why:
1) The whole MSFS franchise is based on getting new people into the "flight sim" community.
@Haofan SONG Cessna in Xplane is the realest I've ever felt outside of actually flying. I knew right away their flight model was spot on.
I'll never be a real pilot. I'm too old. So, give me EYE CANDY

If you get a forcefeed back yoke or joystick it can but Microsoft flight has not added in that feature yet.
Just wait for study level addons to come for FS2020
study level isnt a thing
A study level aircraft is nothing without study level physixs

@@kepyyy5766 agree , I'm also optimistic for its future.
@@Smalltownflyer Oh dear, once PMDG, Aerosoft and some others 3rd party study level devs will realease stuff for MSFS, it's going to be SOOOOOOOOOOOOO good
@@kepyyy5766 have you seen the Q400 xp coming out for xplane 11 soon incredibly detailed amazing graphics, everything 100% simulator, real fluid simulation and circuit breaker real-time function all fully operable, 1 to 1 flight physics matched to the real aircraft, advanced icing simulation, modeling, physics this just one aircraft example xp is nowhere dying out , it makes the majestic dash 8 look like crap and systems seem light in comparison
Xplane is dead in a year or two if they don't build a new Xplane 12 or 13 just to compete
I enjoy both. But still disappointed in the FS2020 flight model - does not feel right. Landing a C152 with a 20 knot crosswind should need more than a hint of effort on the rudder, but it almost floats in straight. Hopefully they can fix it.
As an instructor I agree that FS2020 is good for aviation. We are still in the honeymoon phase. Time will tell. Competition is good.
Where did you get the plane on your dresser that lights up?
Bill gates isn't involved with Microsoft anymore
I think this tells you everything you need to know about how this guy has following the MFS platform. The conclusions on the face of it are reasonable but I think as a UA-cam influancer he is going to anoy a load of people who opted for X-Plane as it was a sim and ignored MFS because it was an arcade game, like I said in my above comment an embarrising video.
David Jones totally agree with you man
And even if he was he would have nothing to do with game programming...
I heard Bill is having problems installing the flight sim on his computer and no one will help him.
@@GrumpSkull Haha, good one :D I think Uncle Bill has totally different problems atm, to save the real world that is simulated so well in MSFS2020
There's already a payware Cessna 182 for MSFS I think.

As a non-pilot who understands some basic terms, my summary of this would be- if the inside of the plane is more important to you, XPlane is the way to go. If outside the plane is more important to you, MFS is the way to go.
