Where did our kite beach go? Nowhere to fly after the storm.

  • My 2,003rd kite video. Only one kite on display this time, and it wasn't on the beach, as our usual flying spot has virtually disappeared - just temporarily, we hope. With luck, the beach will return to normal before long.
    Anyone wanting to check out all my "How to..." videos on various aspects of kite-flying can now find them all easily on my Playlist at / jimskitesnz .

      I hope so too, Christian. I haven't done much flying in recent weeks, but it's winter so I suppose I shouldn't complain.

      I hope so, Andrew, but the weather generally has been most unfavourable for flying in recent months and we've flown far less than in previous years.

    Jim, it mirrors the conditions at Morro Bay last winter. Afterward, there was a change in the contour of the beach below the waterline. Rocks and boulders either washed up or were exposed by scouring of the sand. Tarballs got on shoes, beach mats etc. Later, there was a pestilence of ladybird beetles that rode the debris from streams to the sea and to the beach. The local government did nothing to clean the beach before the kite festival. A citizen took the initiative and spearheaded the scraping of the debris a day before the event. Take my advice, Jim. Be cautious about returning to your usual pattern of beach flying. If you go onto the sands and twist your leg or back, things will not be the same for you for quite a while. I know.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for the advice, Glenn. Certainly we can't rely on the council to clean it all up, but with luck nature will be kind and put things back where she had them before. It may take a while, but I haven't seen the conditions at low tide yet to know just how much the beach contour has changed.

    Impressive storm!! Mother natures full fury....i did notice that you are lucky to have many tie downs in different forms...our beaches are wide and full sand to the dunes so have to use bags... Hope conditions improve....take care

      Yes, we have a lot of anchors, including all these new ones. Our council very rarely does any clean-up on the beach. I haven't had to use sand anchors for many years, which is good as people used to let their dogs pee on them (we have some terrible dog-owners here who don't think it necessary to control their animals).

      I always try to pick suitable music, but it's not easy to find something suitable and copyright-free. Most of UA-cam's free audio library is rubbish, unfortunately, although there are a few good items among the dross.

    Jim; during our Winter here when we have the King Tides, our beach & waves looks the same as yours. We have the high tides that come up to the grass and flood the beach parking lots with debris & impassable roads. But we are lucky. NO SAND LEAVES THE BEACH. However; up the coast the waves do take out the sand. The sand ends up down here near the top of the Peninsula. 10 years ago, the street that ran along the ocean is NOW 10 streets in. We now have 10 more streets with homes on them. At Ocean Park; you might not see the ocean for long being blocked by houses. And up the coast; the homes & streets are being washed away.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Рік тому

      Nature is never static, for sure. I hope that "new land" on which people have built more homes doesn't disappear on you one day. Here we are being warned that people living near the coast may have to move as sea levels rise.

    • @longbeachpeninsulawaphotos
      @longbeachpeninsulawaphotos Рік тому

      If you look at the map the Long Beach Peninsula sticks out from the Washington Coast. Our weather is strange here. I can look out of my windows to the West and it is raining and the roads are wet. I walk out my front door on the East; the it is not raining & the road is dry.

    Dramatic video, due to our fragile local coastline millions have been spent recharging the beaches to hopefully reduce erosion and risk of flooding ongoing battle though, hope your flying sight is usable again soon Jim

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Рік тому

      Nothing is spent on combatting erosion here, Colin, except planting a bit of marram grass on the dunes to try to stabilise them. They talk of "managed retreat" from the coast as being preferable to making any effort to keep the sea at bay. My dad used to work on the sea defences in Sussex, and was appalled when he came here to see that such things don't exist.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Рік тому

      This happened five days before the full moon, which happens today (Monday here in NZ). I think all of the high tides for a while will be right up the beach, but with luck we'll get some decent flying weather sometime when it's low tide. We've not had a lot of rain here in Christchurch, but the North Island has certainly suffered a lot this year.

    Oh man. That is sad to see. I am sure it will take some time to get cleaned up. At least you still have beach. Our here is still 1/2 under water due to high water levels. That’s why I don’t fly down there any longer. Too small and too crowded.

      @JimNicholls  Рік тому

      There's very little of our beach at the moment, Ken, and it's only flyable at low tide, but I'm sure it will eventually build up again. Nature does whatever it wants, so we just have to accept it, I guess.

    That was a whopper of a storm. Always interesting to see what washes up, but dont turn your back on those waves. Any word from nearby beaches that might have been unwilling recipients of all that sand? Perhaps theyd be eager to give it back to you.

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Рік тому

      It would be good to have the sand back, for sure, but it will return once the conditions are right. In the meantime, we'll just fly at low tide on the few occasions when the weather lets us fly at all.

  • @82496125
    @82496125 Рік тому

    With all your beach experience, how fast will it reform? Maybe dramatic, swift changes due to storm are easier to notice than slow steps that return to a steady state..

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Рік тому +1

      Unless the council decides to shift them, many of the big logs will be there semi-permanently. My biggest concern is that we seem to have lost a lot of sand off the beach, which means that until it builds up again the sea will come right in with every high tide and we'll only be able to fly when the tide is out.

    Does this happen often? Do you have an alternate flying site?

    • @JimNicholls
      @JimNicholls  Рік тому

      It's happened before, Gary, and will happen again, but fortunately not too often. The beach is where we fly 99% of the time, as there are few open spaces here without trees around them, and those there are consist mostly of sports fields where we can't fly, of course, when they're in use. The beach will be fine to fly on shortly, especially when the tide is out, so no big problem.

    • @JimNicholls

      Into The Wind lost the factory they had used for 30 years in China, and have had to hunt around for replacements, as no one factory seemed able to take on all their production at the right standard and at a reasonable price. Some of their kites are back in production now, and others will apparently follow (some of them this year), but I don't know if the UltraFoils will be included. ITW would probably tell you if you inquire. You can get them custom made by the designer, Ray Merry, if you contact him on his website at Cobra Kites. Prices will be quite a bit higher, though, but you have a choice of colors.
