  • Lets get excited about our guitar playing again!!! In todays guitar lesson I will teach you a simple way to unleash your guitar playing to its full potential! All pro guitar players use triad shapes. In this intermediate guitar lesson, I will teach you 3 great rock triad examples, Jessica / Allman Brothers, Up around the bend / Creedence Clearwater and You shook me all night long / ACDC. All of these classic rock tunes use the structure of triad shapes to create the solo riffs. As a beginner, we learned simple, open string chords. Those simple chord shapes are movable and we can use them to our advantage. Some of the most iconic guitar, licks and riffs use triads for the structure. We can improve our rhythm and lead guitar playing by starting to use triad shapes around the fretboard. Visualizing the fretboard this way gives us a lot of confidence when we play a guitar solo or riff. We can definitely level up our guitar playing almost instantly by using these triad shapes. Many of our blues rock guitar heroes use triads to visualize the fretboard. I will break down some iconic rock guitar riffs in this intermediate guitar lesson today. All of these licks and riffs use triad shapes. I hope you have fun adding this to your guitar playing. I use triad shapes in my guitar playing all the time. And I know once you start using the triad shapes, you will use them all the time also. You also will be able to improvise with confidence. With your lead and rhythm guitar playing.

Hi Rusty, I’m a late starter to guitar. In the last 2 years I have learned to play open chords and some barre chords, reasonably well. Advanced Rythm guitar beginner level, maybe early intermediate..
Since focussing more on Lead guitar, (RocknRoll/Blues), I can now move through the pentatonic major/minor positions, understand how CAGED system relates to the guitar neck, can find caged triads and notes over the fretboard, have developed a reasonable understanding of scales and music theory, and yet still struggle to make or play riffs that sound musical.
I have been struggling to make any real inroads, and getting a little frustrated at my lack of progress.
Around the 4 minute mark of watching your video on triads, I had a Ah Ha moment, grabbed my guitar and started playing D shaped triad riffs along the neck- brilliant. They sounded musical. So I thought why not use an A shape triad and yes, it worked too. Then E shaped triad, more success. I could see where these triad shapes fitted in CAGED but began to see the related pentatonic patterns associated with them at the same time. I started adding in other notes and varying their order. Wonder of wonders…. It’s sounding musical to my ears!
Yes I will need to practice this daily to get ‘fluency’, but I feel I have made some real progress after being stuck for so long.
I have subscribed to your channel now as there is much more to learn here. The slow play throughs for each riff are also a great help.
Sorry about the lengthy post, but your lesson really got me going!
    Thank you

Great concepts, Rusty........and solid concepts we should all be using in our solo improvisations!! That second part will take a bit more doing............ Jim C.

Hey Jim, always good to hear from you! The caged system is a good way to visualize these shapes, but I like to use just the three note triad shape. Locating those within the scales that we already know. Our guitar heroes definitely made music using these chord shapes. And it’s fun to look at how they did it. It’s a great learning tool! Hope you have a great rest of your week, Jim. Thanks.👍

Great lesson as always! Only made it to the explanation of Jessica before I had to comment. I know i repeat myself - you explain the concepts in a way that I, understand and can immediately start to use even though I am a beginning level player. Thank you again for sharing your experience knowledge and passion for those of us trying to make music! BEST AND PEACE

And then looking ahead to things that you need to work on. Sounds like you’re moving forward! I love playing and teaching guitar! I’m glad you are along for the ride Chuck! Talk to you soon buddy😎

Nice, Rusty! This is just what I'm currently practicing. Getting used to all kinds of triad shapes. Especially the ones on the DGB strings and playing songs only with these triads, exchanging them every few repetitions to get fluent in using them in general. This is perfect discussion material for Thursday. I'm looking forward to it! :)
    Cheers,
    Martin

Rusty ! this is one of my favorites! Gonna try these later and crank up the old strat!! Do you have any tips on how to speed up right hand movement? Left hand (fretboard) is coming along -I’d like to speed up the other hand without sounding sloppy. U rock!! Keep’em coming!

Hey Michael, thanks for checking out the video. And yes, crank up that old Stratocaster! The best way to speed up your hand. Movement is using a metronome. That way you know your progress and he will keep it locked into good timing. Thanks again let’s talk soon.😎

This one was very cool man! I've been playing (on and then way off again; stagnated and rusty, Rusty🤣) but this one makes me wanna play. I knew the songs all too well but I never thought Jessica for example could be so easy! Given there's a lot more to it than that but, it's a good jumping off point. Once I can get the portion that you shared, there's a good possibility I can figure out the rest...I think.
I knew the CCR and AC/DC as well but same thing. Never bothered or something. I'm in a nursing home for emphasema and I had a surgery on my back but, I bought a guitar and I've played from bed (a little tougher than I thought but, I can still do it (I'll spare you the details and no pity please ok ..I'm alright .
I don't have a roadie to set me up right now (nursing assistant) but maybe tomorrow I'll play after a long hiatus...I made sure when they were cleaning yesterday they left my guitar within reach ..tried to put it in the closet)
You seem to teach in way that's easy to understand and it's your choice of songs that I love... classic rock and roll; right up my alley man.
Thanks Rusty, I'm glad to have subscribed to your channel man ✌️❤️🙏

@@rustysguitar1 Hey thanks Rusty, I'll be praying for you as well 🙏. Continued good health or anything you're dealing with or may deal with (let's pray there's none of the latter) in the future. And Yes! These are the soundtracks of our lives.
I remember my first cassette version of Back in Black when I was just a kid with a boombox and a knock off Walkman. Straight through until now. So many albums; all those tunes!! Mixtapes and tunes taped from the radio! I recall so vividly hearing Dream On in the back of a teenagers car and staying up until I'd taped a perfect copy! Vinyl 🤣! The shows! I saw Rush at 11 and so many more in my teens but yup! I've always been most passionate about music and guitar and I'm looking forward to seeing more of your lessons. You keep it simple enough and still so much information; easily retained information...I'll be watching and learning what I need and if I happen to know it already, I've always got time enough. Seeing your passion for the instrument creates a passion in me.
I wonder why I've never heard of ya' but what's important is I have now right? Thanks for sharing your knowledge and thanks for the prayers Rusty. Means a lot man✌️❤️🎸🎶🙏

Fabulous lesson, Rusty, thank you! A great way to escape from the pentatonic "box." Not that there's anything wrong at all with pentatonic riffs - in fact when they are combined and interspersed with these triad chord shapes, it makes solos and fills sound really fresh..On John Mayall and the Bluesbreakers' version of the song, "All Your Love," Eric Clapton plays pretty much an entire solo using arpeggiated minor triads and chord shapes. It's epic. See: ua-cam.com/video/rUUEtCBhn_Q/v-deo.html (at the one minute 20 second mark). But giving credit where credit is due, it was Otis Rush who originally came up with this solo on his original recording of the tune, which he wrote and recorded in 1958. See ua-cam.com/video/PohKCrwxrgA/v-deo.html (at the one minute 10 second mark). Clapton realized how great Rush's solo was and reproduced it on the Bluesbreakers' version. But like with Jessica, it just shows how triads can be milked to tremendous advantage.
