Joe Simon's age is cited in several spots as 78 and in others as 85. His 1975 track Get Down, Get Down (Get on the Floor) Simon’s highest entry on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number eight. Simon was awarded a Grammy in 1970 for best male R&B vocal performance and this year, he was nominated as an inductee in the Rhythm and Blues Hall of Fame.
Etta James is my favorite female singer. I just love, love her voice. It sounds like gold. Otis and Etta are 2 of my favorites. I love a lot of them because they bring back so many good memories. Where I came from in the Soul/R&B genre on the 📻 Motown was King. Loved all of the major Motown Artists. Even seen Gladys Knight & Mr. Al Green when I was much younger. I remember hearing "Sitting on the dock of the Bay" & "Mustang Sally" and thinking this is a different sound than Motown...That deep dived me into the Stax/Volt-Atlantic labels. I REALLY LIKED Southern Soul. For a long time Otis Redding was my #1. Artist. Now up through about 2005 I was still keeping up with the modern music. Fast-forward to the Covid: I started deep diving into the old gospel. I knew of "Drowning in the Sea of Love." But my dive into Gospel music got me into Joe Simon. I like (to name a handful) The Dixie Hummingbirds, The Gospelaires, The Pilgrim Jubilees, Rev. Julius Cheeks,The 5 Blind Boys of Mississippi and Alabama, Mahalia Jackson, and Inez Andrews. Mister Soul Believe it or not, I just found out that he is a preacher and a bishop. He started that back in 1983. He still sounds great after all these years. And, he is a few people that is still around in the soul world. We lost a lot of blues people from death such as Denise LaSalle on 2018 on January 18. The list goes on and on. Well, we all have to go one day. I am glad that Joe is still around with us. I’m very proud that he is now a bishop and a preacher these days.
