  • The 1960’s was simply the most exciting decade in music history known to man. The eruption of talent after the discovery of the Mersey Sound, spearheaded of course by the Fab Four, changed the world.
    Here is 25 minutes of all the hits from January 1960 to the end of the decade. And the video reflects on what was known as the British invasion, and how the US replied via Motown, the Beach Boys, the Byrds and the Monkees.

    This was our mental health treatment. You could laugh and cry all your emotions out over the weekend and still a bit rugged on Monday morning you were up for work. My four sisters and I always had Jim traves song guilty on if one of us had a breakup. My mother was so sick of hearing it. She would have paid someone to Marry us. The young ones should listen to this music. I am sure it would help. As we matured I went classic. One sister was Elvis mad and the other two were in the fringe with the new stuff.

    Thank you for this. I started at puberty and made it through high school, and remembered almost every song. There were very few that didn't make it to Canada. It was great to see The Kinks, The Searchers, Tremeloes, and The Walker Brothers. And Manfred Mann. What a great journey that took me 10 years to live, and 20+ minutes to relive. ♥

      Hi Dave thanks for your comment. I use the data from the Official Charts Company. They compiled their information from the New Musical Express chart from 1952 to 1960, the Record Retailer chart from 1960 to 1969, and the Official UK Singles Chart from 1969 onwards. This is the same data which Wikipedia, Guinness book of hit singles etc use to compile their charts. "Please Please Me", "The Price Of Love" and "19th Nervous Breakdown" all got to number 2 on these charts. Thanks for your comment. 👍

    Just to put the record straight, "Please Please Me" was No.1 in N.M.E. - therefore also Radio Luxembourg (2 wks.) ; Melody Maker - so also Daily Mirror and others (2 wks.), B.B.C.'s Pick Of The Pops (3 wks.), also Disc (2 wks.), Pop Weekly (2 wks.) as well as E.M.I.'s own chart and of course Mersey Beat. So a big thumbs down to the "official" chart compiled by Record Retailer.
    As for Herb Alpert, there was one special magic week in 1968 when Alan Freeman announced, Number Five Tom Jones "Help Yourself", Four Aretha Franklin "I Say A Little Prayer. No three, no two, three at Joint Number One this week. (They being the Bee Gees, the Beach Boys and Herb Alpert.)

    We could argue for another decade or three about which chart was the "correct" one. They all were at the time. It was only the authors of the Guinness Books who distorted the truth, pretending to be the Authority on the subject. "Please Please Me" was the Beatles' first Number One. It got awarded a silver disc for 250,000 sales in April 1963. Doesn't that knock all the arguments on the head?

    I've always maintained that "the day the music died" was the day Sugar Sugar reached number 1. This excellent video bears this out - that garbage, followed by Rolf Harris, and then the 60s ended! From then on record companies aimed their single releases at 11 year olds, who by then were their best customers.

As for "I Can't Let Go" this got to Number 2 on the "Official Chart Company" chart in February 1966. Thanks for your comment. 👍

    • @Vinyl_Dave
      @Vinyl_Dave 6 днів тому +1

      The so-called "official chart" is complete nonsense. Back in the day the B.B.C. made up an official chart based on a combination of all the main music papers. Anyone who was there at the time would only listen to the B.B.C.'s Alan Freeman on "Pick of the Pops" and watch Top Of The Pops. The official chart of Record Retailer was only chosen because it contained 50 discs as opposed to the N.M.E.'s 30. The R.R. chart is generally agreed to be the least reliable of all for the '60s.

    • @Vinyl_Dave
      @Vinyl_Dave 6 днів тому +1

      In 1972 the N.M.E. published their 20 years of No.1s. I tried to collect the whole lot throughout the '70s. Also in 1972 the B.B.C. paper Radio Times published a top 100 of the decade. It included that Kenny Ball record. Tony Blackburn played the 100 over a week that Easter. I relived the dream on our local radio a couple of years ago. The Beatles had five of the top six. Ken Dodd was at no.3 with Tears. No.100 was Crying In The Chapel. No.99 was Paperback Writer. You may find that chart on Google, given those clues.
      Thanks for writing your thoughts.

  • @Vinyl_Dave

    Anyone older than 20 would know how to spell Sandie Shaw. "The Next Time" is listed in the Guinness Book ahead of "Bachelor Boy". There were a couple of other double A-sides, two by Elvis for example. "Je t'Aime" was never played on "Top Of The Pops" as a No.1 obviously because it was banned by the B.B.C. Bobbie Gentry was No.1 instead. Stuff the stupid "official" chart (puke).
