I get that that suit made him sweat so much I recently saw this episode I’ve been watching them since I was a little boy and it still good to me brings back a lot of memories may you rest in peace friend
Fred had a fantastic face. Handsome, friendly, expressive - even made up, those traits shone through the layers. A sign of not just a fine actor, but also a beautiful soul.
Eddie's shielding the eyes of his doll from this horrifying spectacle at 0:22 was a good throw-away gag. I've always liked this episode. Gwynne was handsome, I contend.
Fred Gwynne was amazing. He used to visit neighbors, in Pomona, CA, driving a VW bug car...seeing his large frame unfold out of that tiny car, was a feat of legerdemain! _Really_ nice guy! The show used numerous tricks to make him appear _much_ taller/larger than he already was...huge lifts under his boots, lots of torso padding under the clothes, and on the sets, "forced perspective" by having him stand on risers when others weren't, and angling the camera to look up at him; sometimes Lilly bent her knees to appear shorter/more petite. They had fun doing that show; it was directly competing with Addams Family series. Both comedies, but Addams Family had darker overtones, a bit more adult. Munsters was definitely geared to kids...make it about "monsters", but not very scary.
Too bad the actor of lurch from the Adams family couldn't do Herman, or one of the tall actors from Star trek tng (who would have been 20 years younger when the Munsters was made). They wouldn't have to use tricks to make Herman look tall.
@@bairfamilyfarm1336 Dude, Fred Gwynne born to play Herman Munster, there was a shitload more to that character than being tall fer F-sake. Besides Fred was still 6'5" tall, and Ted Cassidy was only 4" taller at 6'9" that's not that big of a difference.
RIP Fred Gwynne❤️Such an amazing actor. My mother was lucky enough to see him in New York once. Edit to clarify: She didn't speak to him though, as she didn’t want to bother him.
One can't blame your mother for not wanting to bother him. I in public wouldn't want to say anything to a TV celebrity. One has to respect their privacy.

Great episode. Acting as Herman without the makeup. This episode should be shown in acting class as a tutorial how certain characters need that make up to fully be that character.
It's Officer Muldoon! ☺😜 Many younger viewers don't realize Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis acted together on "Car 54, Where Are You" so they were already familiar with each other when the "Munsters" began.
Always one my favorite actors, since his days in Car 54 Where are you? with Joe E. Ross, and fellow future Munster co star Al Lewis. We loved that as kids. One of his earliest TV roles, was in an episode of "Brennan", that was actually a pilot about the "mayor" of Greenwich Village. Quiet good, he was the bartender. Excellent singer and dramatic actor. I really miss him.
From what I read the writers put this episode together to give Fred Gwynne a break from having to apply all that really heavy make-up he used to play Herman. I saw a bio of Fred Gwynne recently and he was a very interesting and creative guy.
Fred Gwynne played Herman with child-like delight. An amusing thing was him being fatherly to Eddie, but seeing them react in child-like ways was fun and really showed Fred's acting chops!
When the camera pans up to give us a glimpse of the "new" Herman, the camera just keeps panning up! Geez...Fred Gwynne was built like a skyscraper!! So TALL.....and SO handsome!! Reminds me of an episode from Car 54 WAY. Fred's character Frances Muldoon grows another inch, from 6'6" to 6'7". Fred Gwynne did one "HELL" of a job in the movie "Pet Semetary". He was also great, along with The great Grampa Dr. Al Lewis in this and "Car 54, where are you?". Fred and Dr. Al created for The Munsters, the family pet dragon that was on the show. It lived up underneath the stairs that could raise up like a drawbridge. I forgot the pet's name.

Yeah, beat me to it. That's an actor's dream to go without heavy makeup for guys like Herman, Worf, Data, Spock.
But he did wear his Herman costume in some parts of the episode before & after he transformed.
