I just want to thank you. I'm a musician, and I really admire Roadtrip's former members' singing abilities.
To be fair I was never a fan of boybands either. Back when I was a teenager, I used to cringe very hard when some other girls my age did quizzes like "Who'd be the better boyfriend for you in One Direction ?" or put "Baby" on repeat over and over while openly drooling over a poster of Justin Bieber. Like, I too, like everyone else, did cringy teenager stuff, it just was not THAT kind of cringy stuff.
And fangirls/fanboys can be so obnoxious. Fanfictions (especially romance or porn) written by 14-year-olds about real people has to be one of the worst things ever invented. I know they're exploring things, and trying their best to be creative, but just...no.
But yes, the first time I listened to Roadtrip, I was not looking at them being "boyband members" and doing strange things with their hands. I was not looking at them at all in fact. I was listening to cover after cover of "Someone you loved" and I clicked on theirs by chance. I listened to them as artists, not a boyband. And I shivered from head to toe ! And dropped the plate I was holding lol, it broke a little in the sink.
I don't actually like some of the songs that were composed for them/that they composed back in the band that much (I mean, they're very good compared to the pop songs that are aired on the radio, but not that good either). Like you pointed out, many of the lyrics written by boybands sell an image of Prince Charming as a dream for teenagers to chase vainly (and so they're quite shallow). Music wise, some of the songs (with again notable exceptions) were not that memorable either (though now that they really compose songs for themselves, the results are pretty great).
In the covers that they did though ? Their creativity and most of all their talent as singers really shone through - yes I find them wonderful.
So even if you roasted them (and many of your jokes were really hilarious), I'm just glad you could see past the nefarious boyband etiquette as well.
