Two of several stages of my life of different careers. Med cruising to Venice in the 1960s working on P&O ships. And working for Olivetti in the 1970s and 80s on two continents.
Nicely done Peter 👍. Very well produced and executed, (that's the young photographer of the year award finally paying off 😂🤣😂). Not my usual type of watching subject... but it could be a bit of a catalyst for "looking closer" at things around us and appreciating design with fresh eyes.... or even... a makers eye 😁. Keep up the great vids 😁👍.
Intelligent, informed and informative. As I watched I mused on your future media trajectory! It's a Palinesque travelogue with an element of Clark's 'Civilisation', or a Schama history narrative. A good watch!
Having just spent most of Christmas eve clearing the house up for the invasion of relatives, this was quite a tonic. I wish we'd known about it when we visited. Really enjoyable, thanks, Peter. (the relatives include our small grandchildren so actually it's lovely, but tiring all the same!).
Thanks for this tour of the Olivetti shop in Piazza San Marco. I've walked hundreds of times by this shop and always been puzzled by this place. I didn't know of the Carlo Scarpa's design either! Of Carlo Scarpa's I was only aware of the wooden bridge by the Biblioteca Querini, a rather peculiar bridge that some may say is unsafe as it has no bannisters (not sure if it's the correct word)
Thanks Alberto! I didn’t know that was a Scarpa bridge! I think on a bridge they’re called ‘railings’ from the handrail down to the deck, but I knew exactly what you meant, and I’m no expert on bridges! I was so pleased that the Negozio survived the recent flood - I checked with them before making the video, and they told me the pumps worked perfectly! 👍👍
Thank you Peter for such an interesting and researched vlog. Looking forward to your next one. I guess many would miss it just as you have done in past years. Clearly beautifully restored.
That’s really nice place and a great introduction to it. Very good videography, too, considering you’re *just* a paying member of the public having to deal with other paying members of the public getting in the way of your shot.
Those Italians sure do walk funny at 6:42! 😂 Fancy old buildings do look pretty, but as you say, they do get a bit boring once you've seen them enough times! But there's something about 50s design that's just timeless, take the Eames Lounge chair for instance, 63 years later and it still looks modern! I think perhaps it's to do with the simplicity, everything is functional and pared back, no designs for design's sake!
Agree about the late 50s design - though the whole ‘21st century modern’ thing is a bit of a throwback to that aesthetic, so I wonder if it isn’t just the thing of the moment, and in a few years time we’ll be all about ‘70s brutalism?? Maybe not! 😂👍👍
I worked in an office years ago with a rather large breasted typist of about 25. A couple of guys came in one day and they were joshing her. One said "Ann's a Rolls Royce of a woman" and the other said "Yes, and she's got the headlights full on!" 🤣😂

Beautiful. Old tech is so cool. We are standing on the shoulders of giants. Thanks for sharing, Peter. Scott
Wow Peter, that commentary and videography was every bit as polished as the building. A joy to watch, thanks
Haha, thanks Tim! 👍

My Mum had an Olivetti portable, it was gorgeous, as is this Negozio, thank you Peter.
Thanks Hugh! 👍

Haha, thank you! That's pretty good company to be keeping - I can but hope, lol! 👍👍😆
Quality production sir ! 👏🏻👍🏼
Thank you! 👍
If ITV ever bring back ‘wish you were here’ you should use this as your application video Peter 😀
Thanks Leo! 😆👍
Thanks Peter, it's nice to get a perspective of Italy you don't get from the TV, looking forward to more ME.
Thanks Steve! 👍👍
You are clearly very knowledgeable on this subject! Enjoyed it.. Thanks

Thanks Simon! Yeah, it’s lovely to have visitors - especially when you know they’ll be leaving! 😂👍👍

That's a wee gem. I have to say, I approve of your pronunciation of mezzanine.
Thank you! It is a lovely space. 👍👍
Nicely done Peter, informative, interesting and very fluent.
Thanks and have a relaxing Christmas.
Thanks David. You too! 👍👍

Cheers Rob. Yes, they’ve done a lovely job on the renovation 👍👍
This was amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Really enjoyed this. Interesting and well balanced. Thank you
Cheers Nico. 👍

Thanks Frank! Yes, I tried to pick a quiet time - when at first turned up they were doing a guided tour, has to wait for it to finish and come back! 👍
Interesting! Great video, thoroughly enjoyed it
Cheers Keith! Happy Christmas to you & Madame, too! 👍👍
And “out of nothing” you feed my olivetish. Loving it!

Curious little spot.
Strange place to have it, but very welcome amongst all the tourist traps 👍
@@amakerseye8073 I can see that.
5:00 No computers? Olivetti used to make personal computer, before IBM I think. Based on the 8086 CPU.
Can anyone else hear the typewriters and adding machines saying "We're home! We're home!"?
